International technology Group ANDRITZ has signed a letter of intent with Metsä Fibre to deliver key production technologies for a new bio-product pulp mill with an annual capacity of 1.3 million tons of pulp in Äänekoski, Finland. The order value for ANDRITZ is over 100 million euros. Start-up of the planned mill is scheduled for August 2017.

2015-02-13 101330

ANDRITZ’s scope of supplies includes:

  • A complete wood processing plant with three debarking and chipping lines, three stacker-reclaimer chip handling systems, and bark handling. Each debarking line can process both softwood and hardwood, is designed for world record capacities (pine/spruce/birch: 470/350/270 m3 solid-over-bark per hour), and includes a de-icing conveyor, a debarking drum (5 x 48 meter), and the world’s biggest horizontally fed HHQ chipper, ensuring high capacity without compromising the chip quality.
  • A softwood and hardwood fiberline comprising a chip feeding system, a two-vessel continuous cooking plant, a new evaporation system for liquor extraction, and seven DD (Drum Displacer) washers for brownstock washing and bleaching. The softwood capacity of this line will be the highest in the world by far (3,900 tons per day).
  • The world’s most energy-efficient black liquor evaporation plant with the highest capacity in Europe (1,650 tons/hour). The plant will have seven stages and concentrate black liquor to the very high dry solids content of 85% for efficient combustion in the recovery boiler. In addition, ANDRITZ will also deliver chloride removal systems to enhance the chemical recovery process and to produce liquid methanol, which will be used as a biofuel source.
  • A recausticizing plant, which will be the largest in Europe (white liquor production of 16,000 m3/day), with two centrifuges for dregs, slaker-classifier, white liquor disc filter, and lime mud disc filter.

The new mill will be a next-generation bio-product pulp mill which can convert wood raw material into bio-materials and bio-energy in addition to high-quality pulp. It will not use any fossil-based fuels as all of the energy required will be generated from wood. The erection of the new mill is the largest investment in the Finnish forest industry ever.

ANDRITZ will convert the digester to its Downflow Lo-Solids cooking technology and add a TurboFeed chip pumping system to improve the feed to the digester as well as a vapor reboiler to further reduce odorous emissions. In the brownstock washing area, ANDRITZ will deliver a pressure diffuser washer.

This upgrade is a follow-up order to the recovery boiler that was delivered by ANDRITZ and started up successfully in the Frantschach mill in 2013. Mondi’s investment will help to improve the use of resources and further increase the mill’s energy efficiency and competitiveness.

andThe PrimeLineST tissue machine started up by international technology Group ANDRITZ at C&S Paper Yunfu, China, at the beginning of 2014 achieved a production speed of 1,800 m/min, thus setting a world record for a tissue machine with steam-heated hood.

At the same time, the second tissue machine with steel Yankee supplied by ANDRITZ to C&S Paper Yunfu was started up successfully, with a design speed of 1,900 m/min and a width of 5.56 m.

The ANDRITZ PrimeLineST tissue machines were designed particularly to further reduce drying costs. The entire drying process uses steam only, and the high-precision steel Yankee – combined with a steam-heated hood – allows high output and runability as well as significant cost savings by operating with the comparatively cheap steam. Thanks to the steel Yankee and the fully integrated heat recovery system, the steam consumption is also well below the amount required by similar machines.

andIn the third quarter of 2014, international technology Group ANDRITZ showed solid business development in an unchanged challenging economic environment:

  • Sales amounted to 1,463.5 MEUR in the third quarter of 2014 and were thus below the level of the previous yearʼs reference period (Q3 2013: 1,534.5 MEUR); the decline of 4.6% is mainly due to a project-related drop in sales in the PULP & PAPER and the METALS business areas. In the first three quarters of 2014, sales of the Group amounted to 4,122.9 MEUR and thus practically reached last year's reference figure (-0.5% versus Q1-Q3 2013: 4,144.6 MEUR).
  • The order intake in the third quarter of 2014 amounted to 1,591.5 MEUR, which is 4.3% higher than the very good level in the third quarter of 2013 (1,525.3 MEUR). This positive development is attributable to the METALS business area, where several larger orders were secured in the metalforming (Schuler) and aluminum sectors. In the first three quarters of 2014, the order intake of the Group saw very favorable development: At 4,571.6 MEUR, order intake was 12.8% higher than in the previous year's reference period (Q1-Q3 2013: 4,051.3 MEUR) – with the Schuler Group contributing 916.3 MEUR (Q1-Q3 2013: 657.8 MEUR); however, Schuler was only included in the last year's reference period from March 1, 2013 (date of first-time consolidation). Excluding Schuler, the Group’s order intake would have increased by 7.7%.
  • As of September 30, 2014, the order backlog amounted to 7,702.2 MEUR – an increase of 4.2% compared to the end of 2013 (December 31, 2013: 7,388.5 MEUR).
  • In the third quarter of 2014, the EBITA amounted to 101.0 MEUR and was thus 44.1% higher than the low level of the previous year's reference period (Q3 2013: 70.1 MEUR), which was impacted negatively by additional costs in the PULP & PAPER and the SEPARATION business areas. The Group's EBITA margin also increased substantially to 6.9% (Q3 2013: 4.6%). In the first three quarters of 2014, the EBITA amounted to 234.4 MEUR (+40.4% versus Q1-Q3 2013: 167.0 MEUR) and the EBITA margin was 5.7% (Q1-Q3 2013: 4.0%).
  • The net income of the Group in the first three quarters of 2014 amounted to 123.6 MEUR and was thus significantly higher than the previous yearʼs reference value (Q1-Q3 2013: 78.8 MEUR).

On the basis of this business development, the current order backlog, and the sales contribution by the Schuler Group, which was not included in the accounts for the full twelve months in 2013, ANDRITZ expects a slight rise in sales in the 2014 business year compared to the previous year. A significant improvement is expected in the net income compared to the low level of 2013.
