International technology Group ANDRITZ has concluded a cooperation agreement with recycling specialist Alucha, Spain, to supply new technologies and equipment for pyrolysis of rejects (waste) produced in the processing of liquid packaging board to make paper. Pyrolysis of rejects leads to reduced operating costs in industrial plants, for example in the pulp and paper industry, and makes substantial contributions towards protecting the environment.

By treating rejects from liquid packaging board, the fibers are recovered here and the residual fraction is separated into aluminum, gas, and oil by means of pyrolysis. While the recycled aluminum can be sold, the pyrolysis gas and oil can be used to generate heat or electricity, thus reducing the total operating costs and conserving natural resources.

Based on its extensive know-how in the reject treatment sector, ANDRITZ will act as supplier as well as sales and license partner under this cooperation agreement. Alucha is one of the leading developers worldwide of pyrolysis processes for industrial applications.

Based on the ANDRITZ “upgrade on-the-fly” concept, the complete process control system for the existing boiler, which has been operated as standby boiler since 1993 and is equipped with an S5 control system, was replaced within a very short time. Thanks to this concept and a comprehensive FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) together with the Hamburger Containerboard operating personnel, all four boilers in boiler house 3 were fired successfully five days before scheduled start-up, and high-quality steam was produced for the paper machine.

After successful upgrade of the entire PM3 and system upgrades of pulping lines 2, 3, and 4, as well as of the PM4 auxiliaries station by ANDRITZ AUTOMATION, start-up of the boiler was an important milestone for Hamburger Containerboard in bringing the mill’s entire process control system up to a uniform, modern standard. Hamburger Containerboard produces 445,000 tons of corrugated base board from 100% waste paper in Pitten.

The ANDRITZ semi-chemical pulping process is based on green liquor technology. Thanks to blow-line refining at low temperature in the medium consistency range followed by low-consistency refining, high-grade semi-chemical pulp is produced economically with low energy consumption. ANDRITZ fiber washing is tailored to the specific pulp quality, and it also enables high washing efficiency and low chemical consumption.

The order comprises a complete semi-chemical pulp fiberline including chip washing, chemical chip impregnation and digester feeding with an ANDRITZ MSD Impressafiner, a continuous digester, a medium-consistency ANDRITZ 1CP blow line refiner, brown stock washing with an ANDRITZ DD (Drum Displacer) washer, and low-consistency refining with TwinFlo refiners to optimize the pulp properties.

This is already the second order within a year that SCG Paper awarded to ANDRITZ (in 2013, ANDRITZ received an order to deliver a fiberline for used paper and board packaging as well as a reject handling plant). SCG Paper has facilities in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, producing approximately 1.9 million t/a packaging paper that is certified by international environmental standards.

andInternational technology Group ANDRITZ has presented its results for the first quarter of 2014. The key financial figures developed as follows:

  • Sales amounted to 1,219.5 million euros (MEUR) and were thus 4.8% higher th an the reference figure for the previous year (Q1 2013: 1,163.8 MEUR). This increase is due to the Schuler Group*; excluding Schuler, sales would have decreased by 8.9% mainly as a result of the project related low sales generation in several business areas.
  • The order intake, at 1,742.2 MEUR, saw a very favorable development, rising b y 35.2% compared to the first quarter of 2013 (Q1 2013: 1,288.3 MEUR). The Schuler Group contributed 319.8 MEUR; excluding Schuler, the order intake would have increased by 19.3%, with the PULP & PA PER business area noting a very good order intake.
  • The order backlog as of March 31, 2014 increased to 7,734.7 MEUR compared to the end of last year (December 31, 2013: 7,388.5 MEUR).
  • The EBITA amounted to 48.6 MEUR (Q1 2013: 14.2 MEUR). Earnings were th us considerably above the very low reference figure of the previous year, which was strongly negatively im pacted by high provisions booked for a pulp mill project in South America, but still failed to reach a satisfa ctory level, as did the EBITA margin at 4.0% (Q1 2013: 1.2%). This is attributable in parti ular to the p roject-related low sales generation and cost overruns on some projects in the PULP & PAPER, METAL S (excluding Schuler), and SEPARATION business areas.
  • Net income (excluding non-controlling interests), at 20.7 MEUR, was significantly above the very low reference figure for the previous year (Q1 2013: 4.1 MEUR).

On the basis of this business development, the order backlog, and the sales contribution by the Schuler Group, which was not included in the accounts for full twelve months in 2013, the ANDRITZ GROUP expects a slight rise in sales in the 2014 business year compared to the previous year. The net income is currently expected to show a significant improvement compared to the low level in 2013.

* First-time consolidation of Schuler: March 1, 2013; thus in Q1 2013 included for one month only
