Voith has brought to market a new screen element for the screw press. SplitScreen is the first screen element consisting of a supporting structure and a screen plate, enabling maintenance and inspection time to be significantly reduced compared with conventional cylindrical screen baskets. In addition, investment costs over the lifetime of the screw press are much lower than for conventional screen elements.

SplitScreen comprises a split supporting body with two removable screen plates instead of one cylindrical basket. This design enables direct access to the individual screw press components without having to dismantle it completely. Whereas with previous technologies the entire press screw including screen baskets had to be lifted out using an indoor crane to get to the cylindrical screen elements, SplitScreen allows the top half of the SplitScreen to be disconnected after lifting the hood to check the condition of the plate. If the screen plate, which is a wearing part, does actually need to be replaced the lower half can also simply be turned to the top. This then gives easy access to exchange the upper and lower screen plates. At the same time this makes the press screw accessible for inspection.

VP SplitScreen 14

With SplitScreen, the time necessary for replacing a screen element is only three to four hours instead of the average 24 to 48 hours that were previously needed. Moreover, procurement costs can be cut up to 40 percent per year after first installation, as in the event of wear only the screen plate and not the entire SplitScreen has to be changed. The large, open design of the screen area also helps improve the dewatering efficiency of the screw press.

SplitScreen is a standard feature of Voith's new InfiltraScrewpress. All conventional screen elements of Voith’s Thune screw press as well as screw presses from other manufacturers can be converted to SplitScreen.

The new screen element has already been successfully installed more than a dozen times worldwide and has also been retrofitted to conventional screw presses six times to date. The product is proving effective in the field and customers that have installed SplitScreen are very satisfied with its performance.

Voith BlueLine machines successful in operation

2015 04 01 093133In the paper industry there is a demand for innovations that reduce operating costs and help conserve resources in the production process. Voith developed its BlueLine range to meet both these requirements. Strong sales in the two years following the market launch of this product range confirm that this approach is appreciated in the industry.

In the meantime, more than 40 IntegraGuard headbox screens have been sold. The machine head geometry was flow-optimized to keep the flow velocity through the screen consistent and low, which prevents strings and deposits. Thanks to the new improved head piece of the screen, the energy requirement of IntegraGuard could be reduced and pulsation minimized. As a result, energy efficiency and paper quality are improved.

The most successful machine in the BlueLine range to date is the IntensaMaXX pulper detrashing machine, which has now had over 50 installations. This rugged machine has an asymmetric housing that prevents tail formation and stringing, so that even stock containing a lot of contamination does not cause problems in operation. In the IntensaMaXX, the reject is discharged in a downwards direction, ensuring reliable removal of all contaminants. IntensaMaXX can be used in all LC and HC pulping systems for recovered paper. Another advantage of the IntensaMaXX is its low energy consumption.

A suction roll with a SolarFlow polyurethane cover from Voith has had its first maintenance after almost four years. The manufacturer of fine paper that owns the roll has called the running time of exactly 1,438 days between two grinding intervals a potential record-breaker. Suction rolls with other covers would often only manage a quarter of this running time.

2015 02 20 101834

“We only achieved such a remarkable long running time between two grinding intervals thanks to high performance roll covers combined with regular and comprehensive service,” adds Jochen Honold, Global Product Manager Mechanical Roll Service.

The suction roll was completely dismantled at the Voith Service Center in Ravensburg. This is a standardized procedure that ensures that the causes of signs of wear are discovered and can be rectified. “We perform a weak point analysis for each roll that we get for service. This means that we can save our customers future repairs,” says Alexander Reutlinger, Head of the Voith Service Center in Ravensburg.

The SolarFlow polyurethane roll cover allows a maximized void volume, which is maintained over a long installation period due to its unique material properties. This enables stable nip conditions, therefore fast machine speeds with a high dry content and at the same time low energy consumption.

voith logo 2013Brigl & Bergmeister GmbH in Niklasdorf, Austria, contracted with Voith for the delivery of a SpeedSizer applicator unit and a contactless dryer for the Niklasdorf PM 3. The startup of the rebuild is planned for summer 2015. The contract is the first step in a multi-stage development plan, with the goal of improving the quality and speed of the production line.

Because a broad range of wet-strength label papers are produced on the PM 3, there are a variety of demands on the applicator unit. The large number of different coating colors requires a high degree of flexibility in order to achieve excellent paper characteristics. SpeedSizer allows the targeted adjustment of the technical parameters to the individual specifications.

Along with the SpeedSizer, the delivery also includes a new CB-Turn for non-contact web turning, before it is dried using a space-saving combination of infrared heaters and downstream air hood. The high-performance, contactless dryer qDry Pro is especially energy-saving, because the air hood is heated exclusively from the hot exhaust air of the infrared heater.

The signing of the contract in mid-November capped off extensive and detailed project work, where the complete process was run on Voith pilot machines, consisting of SpeedSizer applicator unit, offline coating machine, and supercalender.

Brigl & Bergmeister chose Voith as a partner for this project, because Voith has many years of experience and the corresponding major expertise for specialty paper machines. Another factor is that the SpeedSizer applicator unit is one of the proven components in the Voith portfolio.

The Brigl & Bergmeister Group is part of the Roxcel Group, based in Vienna, and one of the leading manufacturers of label papers and flexible packaging papers.
