The Board of Directors of Nordic Paper has decided to invest approximately SEK 850 m at the Bäckhammar mill. The investment will further improve sustainability performance and strengthen the competitiveness of the plant. An important component of the investment is a new wood room providing for both strategic flexibility in raw material sourcing and efficiency gains in the production. The emissions of dust to air will be reduced by more than two thirds through an installation of a new electrostatic filter. The investments are expected to add about SEK 100 m annually to Nordic Paper EBITDA. Further, the investments set the foundation for future growth in production output.

nordicpaper logoThe investments of today’s decision are approved under the current, existing, production permit. A new production permit was granted for the Bäckhammar mill on 31 January 2023. The new production permit was appealed by a third party and has as of today not gained legal force.

- Bäckhammar is a highly competitive production unit. It is also one of the most climate efficient production plants in the global kraft paper industry. With these investments, we further strengthen the competitiveness of the plant at the same time as we improve our environmental performance. The investment decision has been made considering our strong balance sheet and opportunities for organic growth in Bäckhammar in the future, says Nordic Paper CEO Anita Sjölander.

The investments will be carried out 2023-2025 and will be financed through existing credit facilities. The main cash flow effect from these investments will occur in 2024 and 2025 with more than SEK 300 m each year. There will also be a cash flow effect in 2023 most of which in Q4, as well as a minor effect in 2026. The additional EBITDA of about SEK 100 m from the investments will have full effect from 2026.

At Bäckhammar, Nordic Paper manufactures unbleached kraft papers of different qualities primarily for packaging end-uses. The raw material is pulpwood from sustainably managed forests in mid-Sweden as well as sawmill chips. Products made from paper from Bäckhammar include for example sacks for flour, carrier bags and bread pouches. The main market is in Europe but the papers are shipped all over the world.

Nordic Paper has adopted new targets for reduction of its climate impact. The total emissions of fossil greenhouse gases from Nordic Paper activities, including indirect emissions from purchased goods and services, are to be reduced by 50% to 2030 compared with 2020. In addition, the direct emissions from the company’s own activity and from purchased energy are to be reduced by at least 50% for the same period of time.

Nordic Paper manufactures specialised kraft papers and natural greaseproof papers for use primarily in the food sector. The papers are produced from locally sourced renewable raw materials from sustainably managed forests. Many of the products of the company are supporting a more sustainable society as they replace products made of other materials such as fossil based plastics. The activity of Nordic Paper has climate impact from its own operations, from purchased energy and from other purchased goods and services. After a thorough work carried out over the past decade, the direct emissions from own operations have been reduced so that these emissions are significantly smaller than the indirect climate impact from purchased energy and from other purchased goods and services.

The new climate targets are results of a review of the sustainability strategy carried out by the company. The review also resulted in an updating of the focus areas for the Nordic Paper sustainability work. The updated focus areas are to secure a safe work environment, to reduce climate impact and to deliver products supporting sustainability.

"Sustainability performance and high ambitions within the sustainability area are important parts of our operations and a business driver of increasing importance for us. Our new climate targets signal that we, through our products, contribute to a change to a more sustainable society", says Anita Sjölander, Nordic Paper CEO.

"We have made improvements over the past decade in our operations where we have reduced the use of fossil fuels and also reviewed the use of for example chemicals with high climate impact. A good example over the past year is the focused work carried out at our plant in Säffle to reduce its climate impact. We see that there is potential to do more and we look forward to this work, says Christian Persson", COO of Nordic Paper.

The new targets are applied as of today.

Nordic Paper is world leading within natural greaseproof papers used in different food applications, for example as baking papers, for baking cups or for food containers. The paper has natural barrier properties achieved without the addition of fluorochemicals, so called PFAS. To further develop these natural barriers and to expand the markets for natural greaseproof papers, Nordic Paper has entered into a two-year cooperation with Centre Technique du Papier, CTP, in France.

2022 07 15 111853Nordic Paper produces and develops natural greaseproof papers for the food industry without addition of fluorochemicals. Barrier properties are important characteristics for these paper grades in order that the grease of the packaged foodstuff does not go through the paper. The initiated cooperation project with CTP focuses on exploring and developing further improved natural grease barriers without addition of fluorochemicals.

  • Our papers are equipped with good and natural barriers for many application areas, but we are eager to push the limits and to increase the grease resistance even further of our products, says Henrik Kjellgren, product manager Natural Greaseproof.

CTP is a leading research institute for the paper industry with a specific competence in treatment of fiber surfaces and in barrier properties. Several laboratory tests will be conducted in the project which is expected to result in valuable information for the continued development work of Nordic Paper regarding further improved barriers. The ambition is to expand the market for greaseproof papers so that the customers of Nordic Paper would be able to produce packaging solutions for food that is currently packaged in plastic or aluminum-based solutions.

  • One example of an application we are looking into is food trays for frozen lasagna where the packaging requires very good barrier properties as the food and its packaging undergoes heating, explains Henrik Kjellgren.

Nordic Paper is already today, with its greaseproof papers, able to offer more sustainable alternatives to packaging manufacturers currently using packaging solutions based on plastics or on materials with added fluorochemicals.

  • We can contribute to the ongoing phasing out of the use of PFAS and to reduce plastics consumption in society. It is important that we take further steps to develop us into neighboring application areas where our papers are currently not present to increase our contribution to a sustainable society, concludes Henrik Kjellgren.

Nordic Paper has achieved a significant improvement in environmental performance at its plant in Säffe, Sweden. The improvement is primarily a result of a restructuring work carried out during last year. Emissions of oxygen demanding substances to water from the plant have decreased by more than 90% during the first quarter 2022 compared to last year’s average and the consumption of fossil fuels at the plant has been reduced by about 70%.

2022 05 23 102310The Nordic Paper Säffle plant is one of the largest producers of natural greaseproof papers in the world. The paper is sold for use in food applications such as baking paper or baking cups. During last year, a restructuring work was carried out whereby the pulp production line at the plant was closed and the production capacity for speciality papers was increased by 10%.

- Last year’s restructuring was an important step in the long-term development of Nordic Paper and it explains much of the fantastic improvement in sustainability performance. But very important is also the everyday work we do to improve ourselves. Through continuous improvements, we strengthen our competitiveness and reinforce our position as a leading supplier of high quality greaseproof papers to our customers around the world, says Stefan Åbom, plant manager at Nordic Paper Säffle.

The improvement in sustainability performance is a competitive advantage as demand for solutions with low climate impact is growing. The achieved reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the Säffle plant is an important contribution to the Nordic Paper climate target for 2022 – to reduce emissions in scope 1 and 2 by 10% during the year. Fossil carbon dioxide emissions from the Säffle plant, scope 1, and from purchased energy, scope 2, amounted to about 1,500 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalents during the first quarter 2022.

Bäckhammar mill ready for start-up next week

Nordic Paper Bäckhammar mill is ready for start-up. The prognosis and working hypothesis are that the pulp production will start in the beginning of next week. As always, there will be a ramp up phase of the pulp production.

nordicpaper logoThe paper production will follow the pulp production. Because of the difficult situation it will take time before the production is running with full capacity and it may take time before we are in phase with our planned deliveries.

The Bäckhammar mill has been standing still due to a damaged floor drain that caused big problems. A mixture of water and soap leaked out to the recipient Visman creek during the start-up phase after the mill´s annual maintenance stop. Since the accident, the focus has been on restoring the water treatment in order to get the biodegrading of substances to work normally.

- Last week’s efforts have shown good results. The water in the Visman creek is now showing normal levels of oxygen and the mill is ready for start-up, says Marie Stenquist, director of Corporate Communications.

We are having a continuous dialogue with the local supervisory authority in this situation.

Nordic Paper has come to the conclusion that we are prepared for a safe start-up.

Smartly dressed in 100 percent Swedish paper

A dress completely made of paper from Swedish forests and Nordic Paper. The innovation project ‘Establish locally grown textiles in Sweden’ aims at enabling textile production of raw material from the pulp industry.

2017 10 17 072758

Wood becomes paper, which is turned into fabrics. By using knowledge and skills from classical Swedish industries, such as Nordic Paper, wood can be refined into locally produced textiles. This gives new business opportunities for the domestic industry in Sweden and creates opportunities for a more sustainable textile industry through a range of innovative solutions across branches.

In the provinces of Värmland, there are dense forests of spruce and pine trees. This Swedish forest raw material is processed and refined into paper by Nordic Papers. The unbleached and locally grown paper is then shipped to the textile cluster in the Sjuhärad region, where it is spun into threads at SKS Textile and then turned into fabrics via knitting machines at the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås. At the dyeing company Sjuhäradsbygdens Färgeri, the fabric is given a dark blue colour and is then turned into a flexible dress at Smart Textiles at the University of Borås.

This sounds almost like a fairy tale, but is actually a description of some of the results of the project ‘Establishing locally grown textiles in Sweden’ (Swedish: ENTIS) in BioInnovation, where a number of parties from the Swedish forestry, paper, and textile industry work together to achieve textile production of raw materials from the pulp industry.

“There are already textiles made of paper, but the unique thing about this project is that we have looked at the possibilities for recycling and challenge existing production and recycling techniques to achieve a circular flow. One of the greater challenges in the production of a paper fabric is to knit with the paper yarn instead of weaving with it, since paper is a relatively stiff material. It is also fun to see the collaboration of a project with parties from different branches, and I am also looking forward to see prototypes for interior purposes emerge in this project”, says Lena-Marie Jensen, team leader of ‘Design for recycling’ and project coordinator of the focus area Sustainable Textiles in Smart Textiles.

Paper – a durable and locally grown raw material

The need for textile fibres grows as the population of the earth increases (UN: 9.2 billion in 2050) and the general standard of living is higher. As people settle in cities and afford to consume more, the needs for sophisticated textiles also increase. This is why one finding of this project is that we need to take care of the raw material we have and reuse it. But there is also a need to supply new sustainable raw material that could be part of a circular flow.

- As paper producer we are proud of being part of the project. This is in line with what we do every day, working for bioeconomy. It there is a possibility to make clothes out of our paper, we are thrilled since clothes is something that everyone needs every day. This is a new and exciting way of using our paper compared to the more tradtional  applications, such as sacks, bags and steel interleavingpaper, says Marie Stenquist, communication manager at Nordic Paper.

This project wants to highlight the importance of constantly investigating alternatives to cotton and synthetic fibres in order to get more resource efficient fibres, and how choices in the design process affect the product’s environmental performance. In order to solve the fibre needs of the future, we need a variety of solutions where paper could be one alternative to some products. Paper is also a bio-based material in our immediate surrounding and could be part of a closed cycle.

More information about the project: BioInnovation is one of Sweden’s strategic innovation programmes, which includes the project ‘Establishing locally grown textiles in Sweden’ (Swedish: ENTIS), led by Swerea IVF. Smart Textiles are responsible for the work package ‘Design for Recycling’, where the goal is to enable textile production of raw materials from the pulp industry. This will bring increased opportunities for Sweden to assume a strong position in the globally growing, bio-based economy with forests, fields, water, and waste as a basis. This could then create better conditions, both for sustainability and for the Swedish industry.

Nordic Paper goes pink

Nordic Paper usually has a blue logo. But during October we will be pink!
The reason? Simply that we care!
We have decided to support the Cancer Foundation and their campaign agains breast cancer that is ongoing all over the world, every year - Pink Ribbon.

By selling a ton of sheeted Greasproof paper through an action where the buyer can place their bids, Nordic Paper is supporting the campaign Pink Ribbon.
The selling amount for this ton will go directly to Cancer Foundation and their Pink Ribbon Campaign.

2016 09 27 184223

Once a week we will update our social media with the company name that has offered the highest bid. The auction will start 1th of October and end the last of October.

The sheeted paper is of course a Natural Greaseproof paper and the only difference between the ordinary paper that we usually sell and this auctioned paper is that this ton is delivered in pink boxes. And of course the fact that the selling amount is donated to Cancer Foundation and Pink Ribbon.

This means that the buyer also contributes to the cancer research!

Pink Ribbon campaign is held every year and the purpose is to finance cancer research , but also to support breast cancer pations, survivors and their families all over the world. It´s an internationally operationg charity organization aimed to create a global community for these purposes.

Nordic Paper is an international company that manufactures both Greaseproof paper and Kraft Paper. We are among the biggest manufacturers in the wold and we want to be a part of the amazing work that colors, not only Sweden, but hopefullly most of the world pink during a mont due to a good cause. Therefore we really hope that a lot of people and companies around us becomes a part of this!

- The design of the pink boxes is specially developed by a Swedish designer, Maria K Back at Whiter Shade, for this campaign and we really hope that there will be a lot of buyers that place their bids since we are sending the selling amount directly to the Pink Ribbon , says Marie Stenquist, Corporate Communications/PR manager at Nordic Paper.

Nordic Paper at Bäckhammar will shortly launch and new evaporation plant. In at press release the company describes this as a journey towards being one of the world's best Kraft paper manufacturers.

The plant will be inaugurated on Wednesday 22 June by the Mayor of Kristinehamn, Bjarne Olsson (S).

”When more and more can consumers react negatively towards plastic products and demand alternatives with smaller environmental footprints we also see increased demand for our products” says Jan Runo, leader of the Nordic Paper concern.

This gives Nordic paper great possibilities and is why we are now investing in our Kraft paper mill at Bäckhammar. The evaporation plant is the first step in the pulp mill´s chemical and energy recycling concept. It contributes to making the mill self sufficient where energy is concerned. The plant dries lute from the pulp boiler in five different stages. After that it can be used as fuel in the process. According to Lars Rosén, Produktion Director Kraft Paper, the medium term aim is to increase the yearly capacity of pulp from the current 195 000 tonnes to 230 000 tonnes and of paper from 120 000 tonnes to 160 000 tonnes. The next step will be to evaluate the capacity of the soda boiler before we can increase paper production capacity.
