The leading provider of high-quality paper, packaging and graphic arts supplies today announced the launch of its new identity: Ariva. Formerly Domtar Distribution Group, the rebranding under the name Ariva marks the beginning of a new era in the company's development as a leading provider of best-in-class solutions for the 21st century.

 

The Ariva name and brand replaces all of the company's legacy brands: RIS the paper house in the U.S. and Buntin Reid, JBR La Maison du Papier, and The Paper House in Canada.

Domtar starts new turbine generator

Domtar Corporation celebrated the start-up of its newly installed 50 megawatt bio-fueled steam turbine generator at its Marlboro (Bennettsville) mill in South Carolina today. Domtar invested approximately $40 million in 2010 to complete this project. Now fully operational, the new turbine has made the mill more energy efficient.

Domtar has entered into a 15-year agreement with Santee Cooper, South Carolina's state-owned electric company, for the purchase of up to 50 megawatts of green power. The renewable energy generated by the turbine would be enough to power roughly 31,000 South Carolina homes.

Domtar would like to recognize the State of South Carolina for the significant role it has played in the success of this project. To celebrate the start-up, Domtar organized a "breaker-throw" event at the mill this morning, which included the participation of several State dignitaries as well as Domtar executives.

Domtar has been long committed to sustainable business practices and has implemented energy efficiency programs at all of its facilities to help reduce the impact of its operations on the environment. Since 2002, Domtar's increased reliance on lower-emitting biomass as a fuel source has resulted in a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity. Domtar's self-generation of electricity is at approximately 67%, which represents a 26% increase since 2002. Domtar's use of renewable energy stands at approximately 74% of total energy use, which represents an 18% increase since 2002

Domtar Corporation has announced that it has extended the use of HP's patented ColorLok® Technology to all of its Domtar branded business papers to provide a higher quality printing experience compared to papers that do not have ColorLok Technology. This technology will now be more widely available to customers, allowing them to keep pace with advancements in printing technology found in digital printing systems.

"We are pleased to extend ColorLok Technology, a performance-based standard, to all Domtar branded business papers, and in so doing, providing our customers with high-quality, environmentally responsible paper products, in both virgin and recycled content options," said Karin Flemming, Domtar Marketing Manager, Business Papers.

Domtar first agreed to support the performance standards of ColorLok in early 2008 by incorporating the technology into its First Choice® line of business papers, a premium quality product with 98 brightness, and soon after with its Imageprint® brand multiuse papers. Now Domtar Copy®, Domtar EarthChoice® Office Paper, Husky® Copy and Recycled Husky® Copy, will be available with ColorLok Technology, providing customers with a 92 brightness alternative in both virgin and recycled content options.

Paper that uses the ColorLok logo must pass a precise set of standards for print quality, as well as physical and electrostatic standards for quality and reliability. Criteria for meeting the ColorLok performance standard includes improved image quality, dry time and consistency for printer performance. For inkjet printers, the benefits of ColorLok include bolder, sharper images and faster drying times. Domtar Corporation has announced the on-schedule start up of its new fluff pulp machine in Plymouth, North Carolina. The mill will have an annual production capacity of approximately 444,000 metric tons.

"This is another successful step in our strategic roadmap of pursuing growth opportunities that capitalize on our existing strengths and core competencies," said John D. Williams, President and Chief Executive Officer of Domtar. "The reconfiguration of the Plymouth mill to 100% fluff pulp production provides Domtar with a stronger presence in a growing global market and positions us as a leading fluff pulp manufacturer."

Mr. Williams also added, "The Plymouth mill is a competitive, world-class asset and I am confident that this will bring a renewed sense of purpose to its workforce and stability to the community. The Domtar-Plymouth mill's conversion to 100% fluff pulp production was previously announced in October 2009. Once running at full capacity, the mill will exclusively produce fluff pulp and operate two fiber lines and one fluff pulp machine.

Fluff pulp is bleached softwood cellulose fiber used worldwide in absorbent applications such as baby diapers, feminine hygiene and adult incontinence products.

The Domtar-Plymouth mill has a Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certificate from the Forest Stewardship CouncilTM (FSC®). Adhering to this standard ensures that the fiber procured by the Plymouth mill meets the strict criteria set by this certification system, as well as avoids using fiber from unacceptable sources. The Plymouth mill also has a Chain-of-Custody certificate from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest CertificationTM (PEFC). Domtar has been recognized globally by leading environmental groups for its commitment to responsible fiber sourcing.

Domtar Corporation has announced that it has sold its Woodland hardwood market pulp mill, hydro electric assets and related assets, located in Baileyville, Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, to International Grand Investment Corporation (IGIC). The purchase price is for an aggregate value of US$60 million plus net working capital of US$4 million. All customary closing conditions have been met.

"The sale of the Woodland mill is part of our strategy to reduce our exposure to hardwood pulp markets; the majority of our market pulp activities are in softwood and fluff pulp grades," said John D. Williams, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Woodland, an early adopter of FSC(R) certification as well as ISO 9000 and 14000, has been responsibly manufacturing quality pulp for several decades. We concluded that this transaction was in the best interest of the company, in terms of strategy, and for the mill as it continues the employment of its dedicated workforce."

Woodland was Domtar's only non-integrated hardwood market pulp mill. It has an annual production capacity of 395,000 metric tons and currently employs approximately 300 people.

International Grand Investment Corporation (IGIC) is a U.S.-based Delaware registered company that represents international, individual investors in pulp trade and imports. This is IGIC's second pulp mill acquisition in the United States this year. Domtar Corporation is launching its “Paper Because” campaign through advertisements that will appear in major U.S. and Canadian media outlets, including: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, Fast Company, Audubon, National Geographic and other consumer and trade publications. The campaign will also feature online banner ads and a series of short videos that will appear in a variety of online media.
