Controlling all key processes at the greenfield mill is a showcase of Metso’s global manufacturing and project management capabilities and marks the company as a leading automation partner for pulp and paper makers.

Suzano Maranhão in Brazil, one of the world’s most modern pulp mills owned by Suzano Papel e Celulose S.A., in Imperatriz, Maranhão, Brazil, has run its processes successfully with Metso’s process automation and valve technologies since its startup in late December 2013.

The greenfield pulp mill controls all its key processes with Metso’s integrated automation controls, including wood handling, cooking plant and fiber line, pulp drying and baling, evaporation, power boiler, recovery boiler, causticizing and lime kiln.

Metso’s technologies at Suzano include Metso DNA distributed control system, valves, a quality control system, analyzers, advanced process controls, an operator training simulator, profilers, a web runnability monitoring system, condition monitoring systems, and bale quality management.

“I had no previous experience with Metso’s distributed control system, but now can say that Metso is a great supplier for capital-intensive projects like Suzano Maranhão,’’ says Vitor Wuo, Suzano’s Project Coordinator.

“The system has met our expectations thanks to its user-friendly interface and easy operation. The advanced diagnostics and trend features allow faster decision-making for our operational team,” adds Volnei Hilbert, Industrial Manager at Suzano Maranhão.

Metso’s operator training simulator is used in the local school that Suzano is building in the area. The simulator will have important role in training the local work force for the new pulp mill.

The mill produces 1.5 million tons of bleached eucalyptus market pulp per year. Key technology was supplied by Valmet.

Professional project management in a key role

The project was a real showcase of Metso’s manufacturing and project management capabilities. For example, the distributed control system was engineered in India, Brazil and Finland and manufactured in Finland and in Brazil. Out of the over 1,300 automated valves, the main part was supplied from Metso’s valve factory in China, whereas large valves with special materials were manufactured in Finland.

DCS system hardware and software testing took place at Metso’s Sorocaba office. To meet the customer’s expectations, seamless and continuous communication for smooth cooperation was mandatory among all the supplier locations and continents.

The location of the pulp mill in northeastern Brazil set some extra challenges for the project.

“The arrival port in Brazil lacked modern container handling equipment, which required additional arrangements to get the containers to the quay and onto road trucks that transported them 700 kilometers to the construction site. Due to the rainy season, the roads were nearly in impassable condition in some places,” recalls Project Manager Tuomo Marjomaa, Automation, Metso. Despite the challenging circumstances, the construction phase proceeded as scheduled.

Metso has launched polyurethane roll covers for tissue machine press and suction press rolls. The new PressHusky and VacuHusky roll covers are designed especially for Yankee press applications widely used in dry crepe tissue production. As an option, a Metso iRoll online nip profile measuring system can be applied with these new roll covers.

New polyurethane material enables enhanced tissue quality and control of dewatering efficiency

Some tissue grades are sensitive when it comes to bulkiness and thickness so lower nip pressures are preferred in pressing. Traditionally, this has been a limitation in the use of polyurethane roll covers in Yankee press applications. However, the new polyurethane material of PressHusky and VacuHusky covers offers several hardness alternatives and more options for cover topography, which results in maximized dewatering and the desired tissue quality with high bulkiness and thickness.

PressHusky and VacuHusky covers also provide lowered operating costs due to the reduced need for regrinding. Their low rolling resistance creates energy savings thanks to reduced roll drive power. In addition, solid press rolls with a PressHusky cover can be operated cost-efficiently without internal water cooling.

Online roll profile measurement with intelligent roll

Nip profile monitoring and control has been quite a challenge in a nip formed between a roll and a Yankee dryer. Reliable information on nip profile errors or skewness problems can only be gained when measurements are taken at operating speed with the desired steam pressure inside the Yankee dryer. Metso’s iRoll measurement technology can be utilized with these new polyurethane roll covers, providing accurate nip pressure profile data for efficient nip control.

Measuring moisture more accurately at power plants, for example, can determine the true heat value of incoming biofuel better. This helps evaluate its true energy content and value to optimize boiler operation for enhanced productivity. With the new Metso MR Moisture Analyzer, it is possible to accurately measure the water content of virtually any bulk material.

Metso has developed the Metso MR Moisture Analyzer that features fast and reliable moisture measurement with a large sample volume. In power generation, fuel moisture is the main property measured. Oven drying has been the conventional standard for measuring moisture in biofuels. However, it requires both resources and time to provide accurate results. The new Metso MR Moisture Analyzer enables power producers to reach fast and reliable moisture measurement with less effort and costs.

metso m a

With the new moisture analyzer, it is possible to accurately measure the water content of virtually any bulk material, such as wood-based samples (whole-tree chips, forest residue chips, peat), annual fibers (straw, grains, willow), minerals, foodstuffs and sludge.

Easy to use, low maintenance need

The Metso MR Moisture Analyzer is easy to use: Just insert a sample into the container provided and follow the instructions on a touch-screen user interface. Since there are no wearing parts, the need for maintenance is low. The device is connected to the distributed control system or other plant systems via Ethernet Modbus.

To further increase measurement efficiency, the analyzer can be part of a complete Metso fuel management solution. By integrating it with Metso DNA Fuel Data Manager, fuel management from gate to boiler can be efficiently covered. The Metso DNA Fuel Data Manager monitoring and reporting tool offers complete control and management of fuel deliveries, energy and quality.

New: magnetic resonance technology adopted

The new Metso MR Moisture Analyzer measures the moisture content in less than two minutes. Samples no longer need to be taken to the laboratory, since the device measures them in field conditions thanks to its plug-and-play functionality. The measuring accuracy is extremely high: +/-1 moisture percentage within a 10-90% range.

The device has easy calibration with tap water instead of material-specific calibration. The unit handles large sample volumes up to 0.8 liters, which means that the same sample mass can be measured according to the European standard.

The analyzer measures the water content by measuring hydrogen atoms from free water molecules with magnetic resonance (MR) technology. This modern technology is widely used in the medical segment for magnetic imaging and chemical analysis MR spectroscopy. Metso has now innovatively adopted it to measure moisture of almost any bulky material. It is possible to measure virtually any sample containing water, regardless of the material quality or particle size.

Metso: Get inspired by tissue

Tissue paper can be attractive for many reasons depending on your needs and who you are. In an “emergency” situation you don’t even want to think about being without it. No way! An iPad may be good for many reasons or uses but it can never replace a roll of tissue paper.

But last week, attending the Tissue World exhibition in Barcelona, Spain I realized that tissue paper can be most valuable for other reasons.

tiss 1

I happened to meet there a guy who is collecting tissue hankies. In his collection, he has handkerchiefs from all over the world and from most companies, and some of the samples are really old. Last time he counted them there were more than 12.000 different packages of various brands. The collection is so amazing that the organizers of Tissue World sponsored his booth.

Creative use of tissue

In the opposite part of the exhibition hall I found another exhibitor who has developed a new creative way of utilizing tissue.

tiss 2

In the booth they exposed the most fascinating and beautiful dresses; made of tissue paper. One more attractive than the other with embroideries and other fantastic decorations.

tiss 3The most valuable I suppose was the one made of 500 Euro bills. Who wouldn’t want to own that? But on the other hand I hope they were fake 500 Euro bills or otherwise there will not be much left of the dress when the exhibition closes!

There might be one small disadvantage with these dresses though. You have to stay indoors.

Imagine what would happen if you went out wearing a dress made of tissue paper and it started to rain…

What is best in tissue?

However, most of the people were at Tissue World Barcelona exhibition to learn about new developments and the latest in tissue technology. They wanted to meet the supplier who can provide a machine that produces the best tissue paper with highest softness and bulk and of course to the lowest price!?

Most of the big machine suppliers were exhibiting in Barcelona (except the Italians who boycotted the event this year for various reasons). All tissue machine suppliers provided paper samples.

tiss 4

We are of course stating that our Advantage NTT paper is the best in the market and we are also offering paper rolls to potential customers. But one thing is for sure. Our competitors do not provide as attractive packages as we do. In fact they don’t have any packages at all.

Maybe Metso’s toilet paper gift box will be the next collector's item?
