UPM in Uruguay

UPM’s operations in Uruguay include the Fray Bentos pulp mill, the forestry and wood sourcing company UPM Forestal Oriental which has two nurseries, as well as the UPM Foundation, which in cooperation with local organisations contributes to education, entrepreneurship and improving the quality of life through projects focusing on the rural areas where the company operates.

The Fray Bentos pulp mill started operations in 2007 and it is still one of the world’s most modern and efficient pulp mills. Its annual production capacity is 1.3 million tonnes of chemical eucalyptus pulp. Besides pulp, the Fray Bentos mill is a significant biomass based energy producer - its electricity production accounting for 10% of Uruguay’s total energy production. The mill’s wood raw material comes from sustainably managed local plantations.

UPM Forestal Oriental owns about 230,000 hectares of land, of which about 60% is planted with eucalyptus. The rest of the land is protected or is used for forestry-related infrastructure, cattle grazing and other non-plantation operations. All of UPM's forest plantations are certified to FSC® and PEFCTM  standards. About 70% of the Fray Bentos mill’s fibre wood comes from the plantations managed by UPM Forestal Oriental and the rest is supplied by the company’s long term partners.

In Uruguay, UPM has 550 direct employees and employs indirectly around 3,400 people. The value chain of UPM’s Uruguay operations creates altogether 6,400 jobs and its contribution to Uruguay’s GDP is approximately 1.3%.

UPM sells the real estate and machinery at Aureskoski further processing mill in Parkano, Finland, to Tammiwood Ltd. The parties have  agreed not to disclose the sales price. UPM operations at Aureskoski mill ceased in December 2012. UPM produced interior wood panels at the mill.

Tammiwood’s major shareholder is Tammiston Puu Ltd., a Finnish company specialised in manufacturing garden products. Four employees working at Aureskoski mill will transfer to Tammiwood as permanent employees.

“The sale of Aureskoski site has a positive effect on the economic life in the area. We think that the new owner has a good opportunity to further develop the site,” says Aki Temmes, Director, Business Control, UPM Timber.

“Aureskoski mill complements our production network and enables wider product range. We aim to start production at the mill by the next autumn,” estimates Markku Heinonen, Managing Director, Tammiwood Ltd.

UPM will permanently close down the paper machine 3 at UPM Rauma mill in Finland and  the paper machine 4 at Ettringen mill in Germany by the end of the April 2013. The number of employees is reduced by 87 in UPM Rauma mill and by 150 in UPM Ettringen mill.

The employee negotiations concerning the closing plans were concluded in March. UPM has also concluded the employee negotitations with the employee representatives concerning streamlining the Paper Business Group and global functions in Finland.  Employee negotiations in global functions continue in several countries following local schedules and processes. The selling processes of UPM Docelles paper mill and UPM Aigrefeuille further prosessing mill in France continue.

In the Finnish employee negotiations the argumentation of personnel reductions, schedule and change support for the redundants were discussed.

“The employee reductions are inevitable under the circumstances. UPM will support former employees through re-employment and retraining in many ways,“ says Jyrki Ovaska, President of the UPM Paper Business Group.

Employee reductions are a result of UPM’s need to permanently reduce paper capacity in Europe  by a further 580,000 tonnes. Current business environment also makes evident the need for streamlining of the Paper Business Group and UPM’s global functions to remain cost competitive in the new business scale. UPM announced its plans on January 17, 2013.

The continuing challenges in European economy have significantly impacted the consumption of  paper, exacerbating the effect of structural changes in paper end-uses and resulting in further decline in the demand of graphic papers in Europe. High costs and significant overcapacity continue to challenge the industry operators in Europe.

UPM has announced cooperation for release liner recovery with the French subsidiary of Aliplast, an Italian company specializing in the collection and treatment of recovered plastic films. This partnership expands Aliplast’s recycling services to polypropylene (PP) and paper-based release liners through UPM Raflatac’s RafCycle® waste management concept. Aliplast now collects, sorts and distributes all types of release liner to different recycling processes, avoiding landfill or incineration.

Large collection bags are installed by Aliplast for use by self-adhesive label end-users like drinks bottlers and companies from the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Aliplast collects the bags regularly and directs them to its two sorting centres near Strasbourg and Lyon. After sorting, the waste is transported to its final place of re-use.

Polypropylene liners, including UPM Raflatac’s ProLiner PP30, are re-used as raw material in the manufacture of wood-plastic composite products at the UPM ProFi® factory in Bruchsal, Germany. Other wrapping films are recycled into various packaging products by Aliplast Italy.

Aliplast also collects paper-based release liners for fibre re-use. The recovered paper liners are re-pulped and de-siliconized, and the pulp is used for papermaking at UPM’s paper mills.

Through the partnership with Aliplast, UPM Raflatac has extended the reach of its RafCycle concept to even more label end-users. This unique service provides a sustainable solution for recycling paper and film release liners, reducing the environmental impact and bringing down waste management costs. By giving release liner a second life, UPM is making yet another advance in the sustainable management of the labelstock lifecycle.

UPM wins Sustainable Biofuels Award in Rotterdam

UPM has received the Sustainability Award 2013 for Breakthrough Innovation in Technology in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The award which recognises the innovation that is taking place in the development of truly sustainable and renewable fuels is presented by the World Biofuels Markets Congress & Exhibition.

UPM Biofuels received the Sustainable Biofuels Award due to its success in developing an innovative production process for an advanced renewable diesel, UPM BioVerno.  So even before it goes live, UPM’s renewable diesel production process has won a major international prize.

The award was judged by an elite panel of independent industry experts. According to reasoning, UPM was the winner of the Breakthrough Innovation in Technology Award because of the UPM BioVerno product characteristics corresponding to traditional fuel with the greenhouse gas emissions being reduced by up to 80%.

Event Director Claire Poole commented: “The Sustainable Biofuels Awards recognise the tremendous innovation that is taking place in the development of truly sustainable and renewable fuels, and the key success factor of this novel drop-in fuel is sustainability.  The feedstock is wood-based, non-food origin with no indirect land use change. A truly sustainable achievement.”

“During the last few years we have made progress with remarkable R&D work and important investments for developing wood-based biofuels. UPM aims to become a major player in advanced biofuels so this recognition confirms that we have managed to make significant progress in this field,” says Petri Kukkonen, Vice President of UPM Biofuels Business.

Driving lower emissions with UPM BioVerno

UPM BioVerno is a high quality transport fuel that works well in modern vehicles and is fully compatible with existing fuel distribution systems. UPM BioVerno has been tested for its properties, functionality, and emissions in various laboratories including VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) and FEV (Forschungsgesellschaft für Energietechnik und Verbrennungsmotoren GmbH) in Germany.

Furthermore, UPM BioVerno decreases greenhouse gas emissions significantly. The greenhouse gas reduction of approximately 80% is calculated for the whole lifecycle taking into account all energy used in the plant and utilities used in production.

UPM BioVerno is produced from crude tall oil (CTO), which is a residue from the chemical pulping process. The main phases of the process are pretreatment of crude tall oil, hydrotreatment, recycle gas purification, and fractionation. Converting CTO to biofuel is an innovative way to use that residue without changing the main process, which is pulp production. This method makes additional use of an existing UPM residue, and also avoids any raw materials that could be used for food production.

“Coming from the forest industry we benefit from our profound experience in forest biomass and extensive resources that can be used effectively for developing biofuels business and executing large scale biofuel projects,” says Heikki Vappula, President of the Energy and Pulp Business Group in UPM.

Currently, UPM is building a hydrogenation biorefinery on its Kaukas paper and pulp mill site in Lappeenranta, Finland. The biorefinery will produce 100,000 tonnes of renewable diesel for transport, equating to 120 million litres annually. The investment of EUR 150 million is the first industrial scale investment in this field globally. Site construction will be completed in 2014.

The World Biofuels Markets Congress & Exhibition 2013 is Europe's largest congress and exhibition focused on biofuels. The annual Sustainable Biofuels Awards were yesterday presented to winners at a special ceremony during the annual World Biofuels Markets in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

upm logo2UPM has been awarded the EU Ecolabel Communication Award 2012 in the Producer/Retailer category. UPM Paper is the largest producer of newsprint, graphic and copying papers with the EU Ecolabel. Third-party ecolabels prove the environmental quality of products and support customers in their choices.

"With so many different environmental labels currently existing, producers and consumers know that having the EU Ecolabel is the best way to prove throughout Europe that their products have excellent environmental performance", says Michele Galatola, EU Ecolabel Coordinator, DG Environment, European Commission.

The EU Ecolabel Communication Award recognises holders of the EU Ecolabel that have shown outstanding achievement in increasing public awareness and knowledge of the EU Ecolabel through promotional campaigns. The jury is composed of the European Commission, representatives of several Competent Bodies, as well as the press and a representative of an NGO.

“Our consistent work with e.g. resource efficiency has made it possible to meet the EU Ecolabel requirements. With the EU Ecolabel we have been able to further promote paper and print as a sustainable solution and communications platform. By increasing public awareness and knowledge of EU Ecolabel through different communications and promotional campaigns we can support our customers’ daily work, says Thomas Ehrnrooth, Vice President, Marketing, UPM Paper.

UPM offers EU Ecolabelled paper products from 16 paper mills in Austria, Finland, France, Germany and the UK. In 2012, UPM became the first company to produce newsprint with the EU Ecolabel.

“We want to encourage our customers to start to utilize EU Ecolabel in their own products. UPM cooperates with Printing house Lönnberg who applied for the EU Ecolabel for their printed products - now UPM’s Annual Report 2012 is one of the first printed products with EU Ecolabel”, comments Thomas Ehrnrooth.

The EU Ecolabel is the European Union's official indication of the most environmentally responsible products. It is the most recognised environmental label.
