“Unlocking the Potential” is the main theme of BillerudKorsnäs’ Capital Markets Webcast on 17 September 2018. During the webcast, BillerudKorsnäs will provide a strategy update including more insights into the Next Generation and Production Excellence programmes. The group’s long-term financial targets remain unchanged. In addition, new KPIs to measure the group’s progress over the next years will be presented.

BillerudKorsnäs estimates that global demand for sustainable packaging solutions will remain strong, with a growth rate in the packaging market of approximately 3% CAGR. Following a long period of large investments, driven principally by the new KM7 board machine, BillerudKorsnäs is ready to unlock its potential and strengthen its leading position.

billkorlogoNext Generation is close to completion and entails the construction of KM7 and renovations to the existing pulp mills. As well as adding new capacity, this will also contribute to more focused production facilities. The total investment for KM7 is expected to amount to SEK 7.6 billion, which is higher than the previous estimate due to increased costs for the civil and construction project as well as negative currency effects. The machine will be started in March-April 2019 and is expected to produce ~240 ktonnes in 2019 and 390 ktonnes in 2020. The group’s total capital expenditure is expected to amount to SEK 5.3 billion in 2018 and SEK 2.75 billion in 2019, and will level out at SEK 1.3 billion in 2020.

BillerudKorsnäs will continue to pursue its strategy for sustainable solutions and profitable growth, with focus on position, innovation, sustainability and effectiveness. To unlock its full potential over the next years, the group will follow an agenda of prioritised activities aimed at securing the successful ramp-up of KM7, safeguarding the wood supply, stabilising production, enhancing effectiveness, and accelerating innovation and solutions. BillerudKorsnäs has identified certain KPIs to monitor the progress of this work.

“Sustainable packaging has a bright future and BillerudKorsnäs is in a position to increase the pace of challenging the conventional with new solutions. I look forward to presenting our priorities for the next few years, with an agenda that reflects our strong potential”, says Petra Einarsson, BillerudKorsnäs President and CEO.

KM7 financial impact

- Expected total impact on EBITDA from KM7 ramp-up:

  • 2019 SEK -500 million
  • 2020 SEK -200 million

BillerudKorsnäs and Uppsala University are making paper batteries a reality, paving the way for energy storage in packaging materials.

BillerudKorsnäs and researchers at Uppsala University have together taken an important step towards the future’s paper batteries. Together they have taken basic research based on pure cellulose from algae and developed it to work with the same type of fibre that BillerudKorsnäs usually uses to manufacture packaging material. This development opens up for both inexpensive and eco-friendly batteries. The long-term aim is to enable large-scale production and the future use of paper batteries for applications in areas such as smart packaging.

testing of the materialtesting of the material

Technology for large-scale production processes
The development work is being carried out by one of Sweden’s foremost research teams under Maria Strömme, collaborating with BillerudKorsnäs, as a leading company in the development of sustainable packaging technology, in a completely new form.

“What’s special in this case is the model for collaboration between BillerudKorsnäs and Uppsala University that has resulted in technology adapted to large-scale production processes. We’re combining the deep theoretical expertise of the researchers with our understanding of innovation and production technology. By successfully creating a joint platform, we can focus our work on the future, on creating an advanced product that can still be produced in an effective way,” says Lars Sandberg, project manager for innovation at BillerudKorsnäs.

Smart, connected packaging
In the long term, the paper battery opens up possibilities for developing packaging that is both smart and more sustainable. Small paper batteries with sensors can in the future open up for packaging that can be traced through the entire transport chain. This includes, for example, packaging that measures temperature or position in real time and provides information on what is happening with an item during transport.

A paper battery entails many new ways of using packaging and can thus offer exciting opportunities for the packaging industry and BillerudKorsnäs customers that wish to establish systems that safeguard quality and delivery reliability. For example, a light sensor along with a BillerudKorsnäs paper battery could provide information on where in the transport chain a product disappeared from its packaging.

With electrodes based on cellulose from wood fibre, the ambition is that in the future, it will be possible to recycle batteries along with their boxes and make them into new boxes or paper batteries.

testing the paper battery potential and chargetesting the paper battery potential and charge

“The paper battery is a key piece of the puzzle in efforts to produce smart packaging that requires small, sustainable power sources. By enabling this type of sustainable packaging, the work on the paper battery is fully in line with BillerudKorsnäs’ vision of challenging conventional packaging for a sustainable future. Storing energy in paper instead of in lithium batteries, for example, allows for bio-based batteries that can form part of a circular system, which provides major sustainability benefits,” says Magnus Wikström, technical director at BillerudKorsnäs.

For the fourteenth consecutive year, BillerudKorsnäs organizes the international packaging design competition Packaging Impact Design Award (PIDA). Together with approximately 200 students from leading design universities in Sweden, Germany, France and England, the packaging phenomenon unboxing will be challenged.

Unboxing, the moment when a packaging is opened for the first time, is not only the consumer's first encounter with a product, but also increasingly critical for a brand's ability to make a first personal, and through social media, global impression. The possibility of differentiation through unboxing is the theme of the 2018 edition of BillerudKorsnäs design contest PIDA.

2018 04 17 094719

However, the brief to the contestants is more far-reaching than just embracing the first impression. It is about creating a sustainable, innovative and functional packaging concept with a unique unpacking experience that differs from the conventional solutions we see in stores and e-commerce today.

"During the fourteen years we have worked with PIDA, the competition has succeeded in becoming an international institution and one of the most important meeting places for new generation packaging designers and the established industry with brand owners, converters and design agencies. PIDA is a way for us to push forward the development of sustainable packaging design and this year we want to challenge conventional packaging solutions by bringing unboxing to a new level where it can reach its full potential in terms of creativity, sustainability and innovation,"says Lena Dahlberg Manager Carton Solution at BillerudKorsnäs.

Three competitions and new international "public award"
The competition brief was sent to the participants during January and the concept presentation/announcement of winners will occur at three separate events; in Stockholm on May 22 for Swedish and English students, in Paris on June 21 for French students and in Ludwigsburg on November 8 for German students. A novelty this year is the addition of an international award, the Peoples Choice Grand Final Award, where the public is invited to designate a total winner via Facebook. The nomination of the respective winners from England, France, Sweden and Germany starts after all regional competitions have been settled, and the entry that receives the most likes and shares is then named as the total winner of Peoples Choice Grand Final Award.

About PIDA
BillerudKorsnäs Packaging Impact Design Award (PIDA), has been organized annually since 2005 in collaboration with leading colleges and universities in France, Germany and Sweden. The goal
with the competition is to put the packaging at the center and show how significant packaging is for both the product and the environment. Every year, approximately 200 design students participate in the competition, which is an integral part of the education.
