Metsä Board's Kyro mill will be 150 years old this year, 2020. The wood grinding plant along the Kyröskoski rapids was started up in 1870. Since then, the Kyro mill has manufactured market wood pulp, groundwood, sawn timber, various papers and paperboard for international markets. Today, it is a modern and efficient mill that produces high-quality folding boxboard for Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group.

“Kyro people are proud of their mill. Our staff have always lived with changes and challenging times have been overcome by working together. People commit themselves to the mill for a long time, with families often having several generations involved. This has positively influenced the kind of mill Kyro is today,” says Petri Huiko, VP and mill manager of Metsä Board Kyro.

“Continued development is key to the success, efficiency and production quality of our paperboards and we are proud to continue to develop Kyro as generations before us have done,” added Petri.

Last year, Metsä Board Kyro began manufacturing a new plastic free eco-barrier board for food and food service packaging and introduced artificial intelligence (AI) to its quality control. In addition, the mill’s board machine finishing area is presently being modernised. The rebuild includes a new reeler, a winder and the renewal of the reel broke handling system. The investment value is EUR 20 million and the new machinery is scheduled to start during the autumn of 2021.

Eero Aarnio, an artist worldwide famous for furniture designs, such as the iconic Ball Chair, has designed an eco-playhouse made with corrugated board. Aarnio has always been interested in different materials and the opportunities they create. Corrugated board has a particular fascination for him due to its light weight and environmental credentials.

Thanks to its design and the lightweight board construction the playhouse can be conveniently moved from place to place. The playhouse can be set up indoors or outdoors, if the weather permits. It can also be folded up for easy storage. “During this exceptional period people have spent more time at home with their families. Assembling a playhouse is a nice thing to do together and gives enjoyment to the whole family,” commented Eero Aarnio. “In the past, my own children have built huts out of empty corrugated boxes,” Aarnio recalls.

The sustainable white kraftliner materials provided for the production of the playhouse are made by Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group. Metsä Board’s white kraftliners were used for the surfaces: MetsäBoard Pro WKL 160 g/m2 was chosen for the outside due to its smooth printing surface and MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright 160 g/m2 for the inner surface. The used kraftliner type is B-flute.

“Screen printing technology gives the liner surface a uniform, beautiful colour tone. MetsäBoard Pro WKL provides fast drying of the printed ink. Thanks to its high printability and excellent production efficiency, it was an ideal material for this project,” comments Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director EMEA and APAC Metsä Board.

The playhouse has been produced by two Finnish company Futupack and Capertum.

Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium lightweight paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is glad to announce that its paperboards have now achieved DIN CERTCO certificates in industrial compostability complying with DIN EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 standards. In addition, Metsä Board’s eco-barrier paperboard MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB also holds a home compostability certificate. As one of the leading companies, Metsä Board provides certification across its product line helping customers choose packaging materials that comply with their requirements.

“In order to enhance circular economy our main target is that our paperboards are recycled after use. But recycling is not always possible – the paperboard may be contaminated due to its contents and cannot be recycled. In this instance compostability is the next best alternative,” says Helena Moring-Vepsäläinen, Product Safety Manager at Metsä Board.

2020 07 27 112636

DIN EN 13432 standard refers to ‘Requirements for Packaging Recoverable through Composting and Biodegradation’. ASTM D 6400 certification covers the ‘Standard Specification for Labelling of Plastics Designed to be Aerobically Composted in Municipal or Industrial Facilities. The certified paperboards include all Metsä Board grades without a PE coating.

Metsä Board’s paperboards, folding boxboards and white kraftliners, are all made of pure fresh fibres sourced from sustainably managed Northern European forests. They are safe for direct food contact and free from fluorochemicals. Metsä Board paperboards are lightweight and strong, contributing to a reduction of the carbon footprint throughout the whole chain.

Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, has started a rapids fishery restoration project together with WWF Finland and the local Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. Construction work at Mämmenkoski, located in Äänekoski in Central Finland, began in early May and will take a month to complete.

2020 05 19 075720

The aim of the restoration is to make it possible for fish to naturally migrate from Lake Kuhnamo to Lake Ala-Keitele. In addition, it is hoped that it will re-establish the possibility of natural fry production of lake trout in the rapids. The restoration project will open two existing dams to remove obstacles from the fish migration route. The riverbed will be restored into a natural migration route and spawning areas will be formed to enable natural fry production of the trout. The project has been developed in cooperation with the local fishery community.

US-based Association of International Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL) presented its 2020 Product of the Year award to Hazen Paper Company for an Arctic Blue Gin package featuring images of flaming Northern Lights. Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, designed the package structure, the original graphics and the embossing. The impressive package uses the lightweight and strong MetsäBoard Pro FBB Bright folding boxboard 350 g/m2.

“Producing a highly challenging holographic package requires a lot from the material. Smoothness and stiffness are needed to get the large hologram surface adhered to the paperboard without any flaw. Here the Metsä Board team was able to deliver,” says John Hazen, president of Hazen Paper Company. “The paperboard has a very uniform smooth surface, scores and folds exceptionally well, and has economic and environmental superiority. It is an optimal paperboard for transfer metallising and ideal for a high-end graphic arts application, with both beauty and brawn.”

An attractive gift item requires an equally impressive package. Together with its partner network Metsä Board’s packaging design team helped to create an appealing package for a luxury golf ball gift set featuring the universally loved Moomin characters - Metsä Board is a leading European producer of fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group.

Aki Kuivaniemi, Managing Director of the end client Golf Coat explained “We wanted the packaging to be both appealing and luxurious, and also as sustainable as possible. It is important that we take the environment into consideration in everything we do from the product to its packaging.”

“Our aim was to create a packaging that both protects its contents and also displays the products inside as well as possible. We also considered the unboxing experience and that it conveys the feeling of luxury,” said Ilkka Harju, Metsä Board’s Packaging Services Director EMEA and APAC.

The box material is an all-white N-flute corrugated board, produced from MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright. It is lightweight but strong and recyclable. The package is composed of the same white kraftliner for all layers with gold foil on the lid, which gives an exclusive feel when touching the package. The Moomin characters are printed on the packaging sleeve which is made from MetsäBoard Natural FBB folding boxboard. The packaging was manufactured by Finnish Cadpack that also participated in the design process.

Metsä Board is delighted to announce the winner of its international packaging design competition the Better with Less – Design Challenge. ‘Expandable Eco Street Food Ware’ is a smart and ecological solution that addresses the growing demand for street food packaging and to find an alternative to the use of plastic. This year sustainability, and the dual role of packaging, played an especially strong role among the participating designs.

The winner is a highly adaptable plastic-free packaging solution that can provide a simple and trendy alternative to plastic and styrofoam containers which are typically used to serve fast food. The paperboard container is 10 inches in diameter when laid flat and can be folded up to eight different ways ranging from a cone to a plate. The simple design therefore has many applications and can accommodate many types of food.

Besides saving material, the design minimises the space occupied by the container during storage as well as in disposal and recycling. The Expandable Eco Street Food Ware was designed by Christine Gamboa, a Senior Art Director, and Gaudy Danao III, an Associate Creative Director, both from the Philippines. Christine and Gaudy will receive the main prize of 7,000 euros.

2020 03 16 213426

“The winning design is a simple, smart and practical solution offering high variability with minimal material use – reflecting “Better with Less” at its best. It provides a good user experience and is truly environmentally friendly and economical.  Made of a plastic-free barrier board it is easily recyclable, compostable and biodegradable,” says the competition’s chairman, and the member of the jury, Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director at Metsä Board.

The winner of the second prize, 2,000 euros, is ‘Bruk’, a sustainable beverage carton that can be easily recycled with reduced plastic content, designed by Eric Smith from the United States. The third prize, 1,000 euros, went to ‘Razor’ that replaces standard plastic packaging by a minimalist paper box that covers only the razor heads while leaving the handles uncovered. The design was created by Magdalena Schmitz, Sarah Redlich, Mikayla Just and Alejandro Don Flores, all students in product design at the Münster School of Design.

“In the winning designs sustainability and circular economy aspects were well considered and innovatively implemented, and the competition between the top three was very tight. There were many inspiring solutions reflecting a shift in consumer trends from plastic towards more sustainable packaging materials. In some designs, the packaging had a dual role, becoming a part of the product when using it, which further strengthens the circularity of packaging,” says Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director at Metsä Board.

Metsä Board also offered an additional prize of an internship for one student at its new upcoming Paperboard and Packaging Excellence Centre in Finland. ‘Reload’ that allows the storage and sorting of full and empty batteries in the same package won the judges over in the student category. The package is designed by Hamzeh Za’balawi, Franziska Prior, Marcel Diederich and Oliver Ricker. In addition, an honorary mention went to Jasper Chou’s Project FF that is a sustainable glueless container for French fries and ketchup.

The international packaging design competition Better with Less – Design Challenge 2019–2020 was organised by Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group. The competition was arranged to challenge designers to create more environmentally friendly solutions for some of the most frequently used consumer packaging. As many as 146 entrants from 28 countries joined with their ideas. The jury included packaging design influencers from around the world.

Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, is one of the founding members of the recently established European Paper Packaging Alliance (EPPA). EPPA is a food and food service packaging association whose aim is to promote food safety, circular solutions, and lower carbon emissions as well as call for evidence-based policy making. The members represent leading raw material manufacturers and food & food service packaging producers.

2020 03 10 081333

"I believe that EPPA has a really good and important message to tell. Fibre-based food service packaging has a significant role in terms of food hygiene, public health and consumer safety. It is made of a renewable raw material – wood fibre. It is recyclable and also recycles well; in Europe paper and board packaging recycling rates are over 80%. That is circular economy at its best,” says Risto Auero, Sales Director, Metsä Board Food Service Boards.

Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, has designed the Arctic Blue Gin package with an impressive holographic design inspired by the Northern Lights. Arctic Brands Group, the Finland-based spirit company, tasked Metsä Board to design the dramatic package using MetsäBoard Pro FBB Bright lightweight folding boxboard.

2020 03 06 144453

Metsä Board designed the package structure, the original graphics, and the embossing. The Northern Lights image was created by printing on top of Envirofoil®, a plastic-free, holographic metallization effect designed by the paper converter, Hazen. It uses 1% of the aluminium of traditional foil laminates– making it economical and environmentally friendly.

“We wanted to convey an image of a clean, crisp winter’s night highlighted by the flaming exotic Northern Lights,” says Mark Beamesderfer, Packaging Services Director Americas, Metsä Board. “Producing such highly challenging print requires a lot from the material. Smoothness and stiffness is required, so the paperboard properties had to offer a uniform smooth surface, crease and fold exceptionally well, and provide economic and environmental superiority.”
