Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of Metsä Group, has had its emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative as being consistent with the levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The targets, covering greenhouse gas emissions from Metsä Board’s operations (Scopes 1 and 2), are in line with reductions required to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Metsä Board has committed to reduce by 100% its absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030 from a 2016 base year. Scope 1 covers greenhouse gas emissions caused by the company’s own production and Scope 2 refers to purchased energy.

Metsä Board’s target for reducing the emissions from its value chain (Scope 3) also meet the SBTi’s criteria for ambitious value chain goals and are thus in line with current best practices. Metsä Board commits that 70% of its non-fibre suppliers and downstream transportation suppliers by spend will set science based targets by 2024.

“Last year we announced our new, ambitious sustainability targets for 2030. One of these is to achieve fossil free mills by 2030 with zero fossil CO2 emissions. Now we are making the next big commitment to do our share in reducing the consequences of climate change,” says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.

The Science Based Targets initiative defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ goals. Science-based targets are emission reduction targets set in line with the latest climate science requirements needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Kultasuklaa is a Finnish family enterprise, that has been making hand-finished chocolates at its factory in Finland since 1990. The company had one important wish for its new luxury ‘It’s all about love’ praline box: it had to have less plastic. In order to achieve its objective Kultasuklaa collaborated with Metsä Board, the leading European producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards and part of the Metsä Group.

The new eco-barrier paperboard MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB was selected for the package due to it being plastic-free and providing suitable grease and moisture resistance. The paperboard is safe for direct food contact and provides high brightness, as well as a smooth surface with excellent printability. As the paperboard is plastic-free, it does not require plastic separation and can be easily recycled.

2020 01 20 115236

The packaging was designed to reflect the pure and fresh paperboard. Its surface provides a pleasant touch and feel through the use of a soft touch varnish and hot foil. “The packaging does justice, not only to cocoa as a raw material, but also to the pralines which are pulled out from the side of the heart-shaped packaging; this reinforces the product as a luxury gift and creates a feeling of pleasure and high quality. The new design and use of the eco-barrier board has also achieved our objective of reducing the plastic content whilst protecting the delicate nature of the pralines inside,” said chocolate entrepreneur and owner of Kultasuklaa, Juri Kaskela.

The four-praline box has an innovative structure: the external packaging is made from a single piece of paperboard, which forms a heart. The pralines are protected by the eco-barrier paperboard on the packaging’s inner surface. The grid that keeps the pralines in place and separate is made from a single piece of eco-barrier paperboard. “By working in partnership with Kultasuklaa on this exquisite project, we have created a new functional heart-shaped box design that is eye-catching, but also protects the contents and reduces the plastic content,” said Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, EMEA and APAC at Metsä Board. The packaging was converted by Prem and Cadpack in Finland.

Valmet and Metsä Board have signed an agreement for the supply of key technology for the planned renewal of the Husum pulp mill in Sweden. The supply covers a new recovery boiler and an upgrade of the existing evaporator with a new super concentrator. The contract is conditional for Metsä Board making the final investment decision after receiving the environmental permit, which is estimated for the second quarter of 2020, at the earliest.

The order is included in Valmet's orders received of the fourth quarter 2019. The value of the order will not be disclosed. An order with this scope of supply is usually valued in the range of EUR 100-150 million. The equipment is scheduled to be in operation by the end of 2021.

“The planned investment in the recovery boiler will reduce the energy costs of the mill, improve the reliability of production and decrease the duration of the annual maintenance shutdown. Own electricity generation, entirely based on renewable biomass, will double and increase the self-sufficiency in electricity of the integrate to over 80 percent. The investment would be a substantial step to take us towards our target of 100% fossil free mills. Valmet was chosen to deliver the recovery boiler and enhancement to the evaporation plant due to the good experiences we have had with them during the years,” says Ari Kiviranta, Senior Vice President, Development, Metsä Board Oyj.

“We have good references for recovery boiler and evaporation technology as well as for our project execution capabilities with our latest similar projects. We were able to meet Metsä Board’s need of better energy efficiency and reliability with our high-power recovery boiler and super concentrator technologies as well as supporting Industrial Internet solutions,” says Jussi Mäntyniemi, Vice President, Recovery Business unit, Valmet.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, announced on 26 April 2019 that it will launch a pre-engineering for the first phase of the renewal of its Husum pulp mill in Sweden. The first phase of the renewal consists of a new recovery boiler and a new turbine. Pulp production will remain on a level permitted in the current environmental permit. On 27 August 2019, the company announced that the competent authority in Sweden, Länsstyrelsen, had decided that the planned new recovery boiler will require an amendment to the environmental permit. At the same time, the company estimated that the final investment decision on the first phase of the renewal can be made in the second quarter of 2020, at the earliest.

2014 01 30 083551The company aims to minimize the delay in the start-up of the new recovery boiler and turbine due to the environmental permit process. This is to enable the introduction of new cleaner and more energy efficient technology as quickly as possible, and to minimize the production interruption risk related to the old recovery boilers. To reduce the delay, the company has selected the main equipment suppliers and will make certain financial commitments for the implementation phase of the project already at the end of 2019 and early 2020, although no final investment decision will be made prior to receiving the environmental permit. The total value of the commitments will be a maximum of EUR 100 million. The total value of the investment is estimated at approximately EUR 320 million. The amount includes financial commitments made prior to the investment decision.

The investment increases renewable electricity generation and reduces oil consumption

The new recovery boiler and turbine are expected to increase the Husum pulp mill's electricity generation by about 330 gigawatt-hours per year, resulting in cost savings at current electricity prices of approximately EUR 12 million per year. In addition, the investment would reduce the amount of purchased oil. The investment would enable to extend the interval between planned maintenance shutdowns and reduce the duration of the shutdowns in the integrated mill, which would slightly increase the annual pulp and board production. The annual maintenance investments and expenses would also be lower. Through the improvements listed above combined, the investment is expected to generate an annual cash flow improvement of approximately EUR 35 million, of which approximately EUR 30 million is EBITDA improvement and EUR 5 million is reduced maintenance investments. The impact on operating profit is expected to be positive despite increasing depreciation. The company's financing costs are expected to increase by approximately EUR 2 million per year from the start-up of the recovery boiler and turbine.

The company expects to record an impairment loss of approximately EUR 19 million on the assets of the Husum pulp mill in its 2019 financial statements.

Consumers and brands around the world are looking for more sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging, with easy recyclability being key. To meet these needs Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, is introducing a new plastic-free eco-barrier paperboard that can be recycled in paper or paperboard waste streams according to local recycling schemes.

New MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB has a medium barrier against moisture and grease, which makes it especially suitable for food and food service packaging. Furthermore, since the eco-barrier board is plastic-free, it does not require a plastic separation process making it easy and cost-efficient to recycle.

“Packaging is a necessity – for food distribution and safety – as well as avoiding food waste. Paperboard packaging made from renewable materials is a sustainable choice, and with further development of the barrier properties of the paperboard we are now able to cater for a greater number of applications. Our new plastic-free eco-barrier paperboard provides many interesting opportunities for food and food service packaging as well as other end uses where barrier properties are needed,” says Katja Tuomola, Business Development Director, Metsä Board.

MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is made of pure fresh fibres sourced from sustainably managed Northern European forests. It is safe for direct food contact and is free from optical brighteners (OBA free) and fluorochemicals. It is available both with PEFC™ or with FSC© certification. As well as being easy to recycle, MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is lightweight, contributing to the reduction of carbon footprint throughout the whole chain.
