To demonstrate how paperboard can boost brand appeal, Metsä Board has launched a new set of packaging samples. The samples demonstrate the various finishing effects and how the paperboard surface can enhance them and create impressive visual and tactile effects. The samples have been designed to inspire end-users in sectors such as food, beautycare, pharmaceuticals, luxury packaging and graphic applications. The samples are produced using the enhanced Metsä Board folding boxboard portfolio.

Printing grey drop shadow requires high smoothness. Unprinted inner box and two colour printed tray (black/copper)The organic cosmetics sample has an uncoated surface with a multilayer embossing that give a special touch and feel. White and gold hot foil stamping adds a luxurious finish to the packaging. The chocolate sample also uses a multilayer embossing with a metallic appearance added to the CMYK printing on silver PE laminate in the text area.

The most demanding sample is the headset packaging that combines various effects requiring many features from the paperboard. The cover of the box is first hot-foiled, then printed with white and CMYK, and finally a multilayer embossing were added to give touch and feel. On the front of the packaging there are tone changes made with grey drop shadows which require a high level of smoothness from the board. On the side of the box there is a silver hot-foil in the background with CMYK printing combining micro-embossing, a multilayer embossing and a debossing. Keeping a rich black colour and small white text on the back of the packaging requires excellent printing properties from the board.

The samples display the desire for natural and organic packaging in the market and show how luxury finishing such as multilayer embossing, micro embossing, glossy varnishes, hot foil stamping, spot pantones and even holographic can really add the WOW factor to everyday items. “The samples have been designed taking into consideration what the market is looking for such as the increased use of uncoated boards, especially in cosmetics, with a surface that is highly receptive to special effects and finishing. Sustainability remains an important issue and our boards are lightweighted to give bulk and stiffness with the use of less raw materials,” says Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, Metsä Board.

The huge amount of plastic used in packaging is a global concern, in part because global plastic waste input into the oceans annually amounts to almost nine million tonnes. The Better with Less – Design Challenge is looking for innovative, sustainable and recyclable packaging solutions for everyday goods.

The Better with Less – Design Challenge was first launched by Metsä Board in 2017–2018, with great success – over 300 packaging designs from 38 countries were submitted. The  winning design found a truly innovative, environmentally friendly paperboard alternative to plastic bubble wrap.

A world-class jury of renowned packaging design experts includes: Alissa Demorest, Chief Editor of luxury packaging magazine Formes de Luxe; Andrew Gibbs, Founder, CEO & Chief Editor of The Dieline; Charles Ng, Founder & Chief Brand Consultant of MCL Group Hong Kong / China; Clark Goolsby, Chief Creative Officer of Chase Design Group; and Stefan Junge, Professor in Packaging Technology at Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin. The chairman, and member of the competition jury, is Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, EMEA and APAC at Metsä Board.

“We need to challenge the packaging world with new solutions – new ways of thinking and new innovations. This competition is all about lessening environmental impact without compromising brand experiences. We aim to help advance innovative and sustainable packaging design throughout the world,” states the competition’s chairman and member of the jury, Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, EMEA and APAC at Metsä Board.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, has just published its sustainability targets for 2030. One of the company’s targets is to achieve fossil free mills by 2030 with zero fossil CO2 emissions.  This ambitious target includes both emissions from the company’s own energy production (scope 1) as well as purchased energy (scope 2). Currently, 82% of the energy used at Metsä Board mills is fossil free.

In addition, Metsä Board is aiming for a 30% reduction in water use per product tonne and a minimum of a 10% energy efficiency improvement by 2030 compared to the 2018 level. These will also play an important role in reaching the fossil free mills target.

“The new targets demonstrate our commitment to mitigate climate change supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Naturally, this requires investment. Our recently announced plan to renew the Metsä Board Husum pulp mill would be a substantial step to take us towards our target of 100% fossil free production,” says Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.

The main raw material in Metsä Board’s paperboard production is renewable and 100% traceable wood sourced from sustainably managed Northern European forests. Metsä Board’s target is to reach a minimum of 90% share of certified wood out of all sourced wood raw material by 2030. In 2018, the company’s share of certified wood raw material was 79%.

Metsä Board is part of Metsä Group that is already a significant carbon sink as its operations already result in more carbon being bound than being emitted. Metsä Board’s sustainability targets are based on the strategic sustainability 2030 objectives of Metsä Group. Metsä Board and its associated company Metsä Fibre, both part of Metsä Group, will launch pre-engineering phases for three major investments. All three investments will further develop the competitiveness of pulp and energy production for both companies, and move them towards fossil-free production.

Development of Metsä Board Husum mill in Sweden

2014 01 30 083551Metsä Board has carried out a prefeasibility study on renewing the Husum pulp mill in phases. In the first phase, the existing two old recovery boilers would be replaced with one new recovery boiler, and the old turbines replaced with one new turbine. Metsä Board will launch a pre-engineering phase for the investment in recovery boiler, which includes, among other things, the necessary regulatory processes, the technical design and a competitive tender for the main equipment. The timing of the final investment decision depends on the duration of the regulatory processes. The investment decision is expected to be made in the fourth quarter of 2019, at the earliest. The capacity of the planned recovery boiler would correspond to an annual production of up to 750,000 tonnes of pulp, in accordance with the current environmental permit. If realized, the size of the investment would be approximately EUR 300 million, divided between years 2019-2022. The recovery boiler would be in operation roughly two years after the final investment decision.

The planned investment in the recovery boiler will reduce the energy costs of the mill, improve the reliability of production and decrease the duration of the annual maintenance shutdown. Own electricity generation, entirely based on renewable biomass, will double and increase the self-sufficiency in electricity of the integrate to over 80 per cent. In addition, the use of fossil oil in the integrate will reduce by approximately 5,000 tonnes per year.

The investment in the recovery boiler would enable the long-term development of the Husum integrated mill. In the second phase, during the 2020’s, the existing two fibre lines of the mill would be replaced by one new. During that period, potential investments to increase paperboard capacity can be based on a cost efficient long-term energy production solution.

Metsä Fibre’s bioproduct mill in Kemi, Finland

Metsä Board’s associated company Metsä Fibre, of which Metsä Board owns 24.9 per cent, will launch a pre-engineering phase for the construction of a bioproduct mill in Kemi, Finland. When realised, the size of the investment would be approximately EUR 1.5 billion and the annual pulp capacity of the mill approximately 1.5 million tonnes. In addition to pulp, the mill would produce several other bioproducts. The new bioproduct mill would replace the existing pulp mill in Kemi of approximately 0.6 million tonnes in annual capacity. The financing structure of the project will be specified during the pre-engineering phase. Metsä Board produces white kraftliner in Kemi. In connection with the construction of Metsä Fibre’s planned bioproduct mill, Metsä Board would make certain own investments in order to ensure the prerequisites for profitable kraftliner production in the long-term.

The final investment decision by Metsä Fibre is estimated to be made in the summer of 2020, at the earliest.

Metsä Fibre’s sawmill in Rauma, Finland

Metsä Fibre will launch a pre-engineering phase for the construction of a new pine sawmill with approximately 750,000 cubic meters of annual capacity in connection with Rauma pulp mill. The size of the investment would be approximately EUR 200 million and the sawmill line, when realised, would be the most modern and efficient in the world. The aim is to increase the utilisation of new technology and data of the sawmill to a clearly higher level compared to existing sawmills. The investment would enable Metsä Fibre to significantly increase the amount of products that store carbon dioxide for a long time.

The final decision on Metsä Fibre’s investment is estimated to be made in the beginning of 2020.

“Packaging of the future is all about creating better brand experiences with less environmental impact. It is important that we continuously develop new solutions to make packaging even more safe and sustainable. For example, improvements to our new High Yield Pulp have enabled us to further enhance our paperboards thus providing even further opportunities for brand owners to lightweight their packaging,” states Ari Kiviranta, SVP Development, Metsä Board.

The new, improved Metsä Board range now offers even stronger performance in highly demanding end-uses, such as food, beautycare, healthcare or luxury packaging and graphics applications. The range consists of five grades:

MetsäBoard Natural FBB - NEW is an uncoated, rigid OBA-free grade that provides an on-trend natural surface to provide authenticity to high end product packaging.

MetsäBoard Classic FBB remains unchanged offering the same superior stiffness and high yield as before.

MetsäBoard Pro FBB OBAfree - NEW presents an improved OBA-free grade with high natural brightness combined with excellent printability.

MetsäBoard Pro FBB Bright - NEW is a multipurpose board with high brightness on top and reverse, now offering further opportunities for lightweighting.

MetsäBoard Prime FBB Bright - NEW combines superb brightness, new bluish white shade and high stiffness offering sustainable luxury for high end packaging.

The new improved grades will be available for samples and trials from May.

Metsä Board is the pioneer and innovation leader in premium lightweight paperboards that enable reduced environmental impact compared to conventional grades. They use less raw materials, energy and water, as well as enabling lower transport weights and reduced waste, all of which results in a lower carbon footprint during the whole packaging life cycle.

The Helsinki Wholesale Market area launched, in October 2018, an innovation competition aimed at finding new ideas and solutions for the development of services and versatile entrepreneurship. From around 60 entries submitted, the best seven were chosen for a pilot phase. Metsä Board is delighted to announce that one of the selected entries is for its recyclable packaging concept targeted at restaurant takeaway services.

The Metsä Board’s project involves the whole packaging value chain, and these needs formed the basis for the packaging development. In addition, a consumer study was carried out at the beginning of the pilot stage. “The current takeaway packages used by restaurants either have functional challenges or consumers regard them as non-ecological. We also got feedback that current packaging does not fulfil the criteria of premium packaging,” says Leena Yliniemi, Technical Marketing Director from Metsä Board.

The piloted packaging concept is manufactured from Metsä Board’s paperboard which is suitable for direct food contact and is recyclable. Furthermore, the packaging can be easily personalised to the restaurant. The packages are designed and manufactured by a Finnish company, Cadpack Oy. Package Testing & Research Oy is responsible for coordinating the pilot as well as for the consumer study. The pilot project will continue until the end of May 2019.

The innovation competition, funded by the City of Helsinki and Business Finland, was organised to find new technological and other innovative solutions specifically for food and food production, and also packaging, circular economy and clean technologies. The competition jury consisted of members representing the City of Helsinki, the University of Helsinki and the business sector.
