poyThe World Bank Sanctions Board has issued a decision imposing a one (1) year sanction on Pöyry Finland Oy, a subsidiary company of Pöyry PLC. The decision means that Pöyry Finland Oy (including its subsidiary companies) cannot participate in World Bank Group financed projects for a period of one (1) year from 30 September 2015. Neither Pöyry PLC nor any other subsidiary companies of Pöyry PLC are affected by this sanction, and remain eligible to participate in World Bank Group financed projects.

The decision relates to a water sector project in Vietnam in 2008, where Pöyry Finland Oy (as successor to Pöyry Environment Oy) was found to have not complied with the Bank's administrative rules. No unlawful conduct by Pöyry Finland Oy or its employees has been identified in this connection.

"We are pleased that this long-running process with the World Bank is now concluded. The decision by the World Bank Sanctions Board is a consequence of conduct by former employees of Pöyry which occurred almost seven (7) years ago. We take all compliance matters extremely seriously and have brought forward significant improvements since that time. poyLLC Siberwood has awarded Pöyry with the 'Proekt', i.e. permitting engineering assignment for the construction of a new modern integrated pulp mill in the Krasnoyarskiy region in Russia.  'Proekt' is an official stage in the approval process of construction projects in Russia. The assignment shall be completed by April 2016.

The pulp mill will produce northern bleached softwood kraft pulp (NBSK), bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) and dissolving pulps. The overall capacity will be 900 000 t/year. The mill will be self-sufficient in heat and electrical power. Construction shall be completed by 2019. The Siberwood project has been evaluated as a priority project by the Administration of Krasnoyarsk Region. By using Best Available Technology (BAT) that meets International and Russian Environmental Regulations, the project will contribute to improved living standards for local citizens.

"Our purpose is to realize a greenfield pulp mill project which shall become globally significant and indeed the biggest in Russia. For production of about 1 million tons of finished products, the mill will consume around 5 million m3 of low-grade wood currently unutilized in the region. In this respect, the new pulp mill will provide sanitary effect to the region's forest cluster. In the future, the modern complex shall become a platform for development of satellite biotechnological production facilities", says Sergey Malkov, CEO of LLC Siberwood.

"Pöyry is delighted to participate in such a significant project. With our combination of world class expertise and deep local understanding, we are able to support this very interesting project", says Nicholas Oksanen, Pöyry's President, Industry Business Group.

poyFinnpulp Oy has awarded Pöyry with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) assignment for a planned pulp mill project in Kuopio, Finland. The assessment program includes Finnpulp Oy's plans on the various implementation alternatives for the mill project and a plan on the environmental impacts to be assessed. In addition to the construction and operation of the pulp mill itself, the assessment procedure will cover the essential auxiliary activities required by the mill such as road and rail connections and the power transmission network.

Finnpulp Oy is planning to realise the world's largest softwood pulp mill investment in Kuopio, Finland. The total amount of the investment is EUR 1.4 billion. The basis for all Finnpulp operations is to become the most efficient and modern producer of softwood pulp in the world. Producing market pulp, the mill is scheduled to start operation by the end of 2019.

The annual production capacity of this pulp mill, designed specifically to produce raw materials for the tissue and packaging board industries, is 1.2 million tons. In addition, it will produce bioelectricity and wood-based biochemicals such as tall oil and turpentine. It is estimated that the mill will use about 6.7 million cubic meters of wood raw material per year.

"It was easy and smooth to continue the EIA with Pöyry after the prefeasibility study of the pulp mill. At Pöyry the industrial and environmental knowledge is combined in a way that suits Finnpulp's requirements", says Timo Piilonen, Project Director of Finnpulp.

"The traditional pulp & paper industry is in transition towards a bio-based product business. As the world's leading pulp and paper engineering consultancy, we are proud to support our clients in this transition towards more sustainable solutions. Pöyry is honored to be able to support Finnpulp in the development of this remarkable project", says Nicholas Oksanen, President, Industry Business Group.

poyKotkamills has awarded Pöyry with the assignment for engineering consultancy, laser scanning, 3D modelling, detail engineering and site services for the folding boxboard machine project at their Kotka Mill in Finland. The assignment is a continuation of the pre-feasibility services performed by Pöyry and it covers the majority of the required engineering services related to the implementation of the project.

With a focus on environmental sustainability, this project responds to growing customer demand by introducing high-quality recyclable barrier board to the market. Unlike other generally used plastic-coated boards, the barrier board of Kotkamills can be recycled without any special measures. By converting the paper machine product to packaging boards, Kotkamills will secure its position as a globally significant manufacturer of forest industry products. Following the conversion into a board machine, Kotka Mill's capacity will be about 400,000 tonnes per year of folding boxboard.

The conversion work is planned to take place during the second quarter of 2016. The board machine is scheduled to start up by the end of June 2016.

"We are very pleased to be able to continue our productive co-operation with Pöyry, one of the few engineering companies who knows paper industry throughout and can fulfil the whole expertise portfolio needed in this kind of wide project with various innovative process parts", says Markku Hämäläinen, CEO of Kotkamills Oy.

"This project is a continuation of the co-operation between Kotkamills and Pöyry. Developing long term partnerships is a benefit for both; client and Pöyry. We are proud to be a part of this innovative project that emphasises balanced sustainability, which is at the heart of our business. This project further strengthens Pöyry's position as the world's leading pulp and paper engineering consultancy", says Nicholas Oksanen, President, Industry Business Group.
