Rottneros changes clothes after 47 years

Rottneros is now taking another step to meet the future. In conjunction with the Annual General Meeting on May 2 in Sunne, Värmland, the company’s new logo is presented. A symbol that clarifies the company’s focus on climate and environmentally smart products and equality.

”With our new graphic profile, we want to show the forward-looking Rottneros. Now we harvest the fruits of our investments in the facilities, focusing on efficiency and sustainability - both ecologically, socially and economically”, explains Lennart Eberleh, President and CEO of Rottneros AB.

2019 05 04 225725Rottneros was founded in 1887. Over the years, a number of logos have passed by. The existing one has been around for 47 years. In 2018, Rottneros had sales of SEK 2.3 billion with about 300 employees and the operating profit was record high of SEK 295 million.

Products that are smart for the planet

Rottneros has factories for high quality pulp in Rottneros, Värmland, and Vallvik, Hälsingland. Of sustainable and renewable forest raw materials, fibres are produced with specific properties that are demanded worldwide. The pulp is used, for example, for products such as air filters, transformers, tissue and cardboard.

The newcomer in the group is Rottneros Packaging, a newly-started factory in Sunne, which manufactures climate-smart packaging for primarily food. The packaging is made from pure forest raw material and replaces the traditional fossil-based plastic packaging.

”Much of our success depends on our ability to be innovative and develop in step with time. Our corporate culture is based on the fact that we respect everyone, are committed and are professionals. Rottneros can and wants to offer products that are smart for the planet. We also want to clarify this by renewing our logo”, explains Lennart Eberleh.

Rottneros is an independent producer of market pulp. The Group comprises the parent company Rottneros AB, listed on Nasdaq Stockholm, and its subsidiaries Rottneros Bruk AB and Vallviks Bruk AB with operations involving the production and sale of market pulp. The Group also includes Rottneros Packaging AB, which manufactures fibre trays, and the wood procurement company SIA Rottneros Baltic in Latvia. The Group has about 300 employees and had a turnover of approximately SEK 2.3 billion in the 2018 financial year.

Rottneros Packaging moved into new, suitable premises in 2018 and started manufacturing moulded fibre trays in early 2019.

The total investment in the new factory amounts to approximately SEK 45 million and mainly consists of a tailor-made system for preparing pulp and four machines for the manufacture of trays. The latest machine was purchased at the end of March and is put into operation by the end of 2019.

2017 10 20 073424After commissioning and trimming, the capacity in the factory will amount to 50-80 million trays per year, depending on the size of trays produced. The trays are primarily intended for food and as a replacement for disposable plastic articles, but also for electronic products and other components. The products can be manufactured with and without barrier, are made of renewable Swedish forest raw material, and are completely free of PFAS. The products are recyclable as paper packaging.

“It is a very exciting development that has occurred within Rottneros Packaging and based on the demand in the market, we see that the time is right for sustainable products. In parallel with the construction of the factory, we have strengthened the organisation and we are now staffed for production in three-shift and continued development of the business” says Nils Hauri, Chief Innovation Officer.

Michael Berggren leaves Rottneros Group

The Mill Director for Vallvik Mill, Michael Berggren, has decided to take up a position outside Rottneros and will therefore leave his position as Mill Director. Michael has six months' notice and will remain in full capacity during this period.

2017 04 26 094503“Vallvik Mill has, under Michael's management, developed rapidly and major efforts are being made to achieve the decided goals”, says Lennart Eberleh, President and CEO of Rottneros AB. “Vallvik Mill has today a strong and competent organisation and I feel confident that Vallvik Mill will continue to develop on its current path. We begin to see the result of a value-based leadership that in a structured and systematic way works towards improved productivity and higher capacity utilisation. I would like to thank Michael for his efforts for Vallvik Mill and Rottneros and wish him good luck in his continued career. It is rewarding to see Rottneros contribute to the personal development of its staff who are sought after by other companies.”

“It has been very developing and rewarding to have been responsible for the development of Vallvik Mill after major investments have been made”, says Michael Berggren. “It was no easy decision to now accept the assignment to become the mill manager for Aspa Bruk, part of Ahlström-Munksjö, but in the end I made the decision based on personal reasons. I am happy and proud of what we have achieved in Vallvik in the last few years and I will miss all the competent and happy colleagues.”

The recruitment of a new Mill Director for Vallvik Mill will begin immediately.

Preem and RenFuel are assessing, in collaboration with Rottneros, the construction of the world’s first lignin plant for biofuels, at the pulp mill in Vallvik, Söderhamn. The plant is expected to produce an annual volume of 25,000-30,000 tonnes of lignin, and will be completed in 2021.

2017 04 26 094503The collaboration between the companies means that Preem will be the first fuel manufacturer in Sweden to use lignin in its production. Via the company Lignolproduktion AB, which is jointly owned by Preem and RenFuel, the aim is to reach a total annual production capacity of 300,000-500,000 tonnes of lignin, based on the assumption that more plants similar to that in Vallvik are established in the future.

“Lignin can be refined to create both renewable diesel and renewable petrol, and used in all vehicles. Lignin, like tall oil, will help us phase out fossil fuels to an even greater extent. It is a valuable raw material in our renewable fuel efforts, and is based on by-products from the Swedish forestry industry. It is also available in large volumes,” says Petter Holland, Managing Director of Preem.

“RenFuel’s lignin oil, Lignol, has considerable climate benefits and is a key factor in achieving Sweden’s goal of the transport sector reducing its fossil emissions by 70 percent between 2010 and 2030. Lignol makes today’s petrol and diesel cars clean vehicles. All current vehicles can run on this type of fuel,” says Sven Löchen, Managing Director of RenFuel, who also considers there to be major export opportunities for this innovation, to countries that, like Sweden, have good access to well-established forestry production.

Deliveries of samples of lignin from Rottneros’s pulp mill in Vallvik are already being made to Renfuel’s pilot facility, which was established for the production of Lignol with the assistance of the Swedish Energy Agency. The Lignol oil is then taken to Preem’s refineries, where the raw material is processed to make biofuels.

“Rottneros is keen to contribute to strengthening Sweden's bioeconomy, in which the pulp industry is already a key element. In addition to contributing to the transport sector’s shift to become fossil free, the extraction of lignin also gives us the opportunity to increase our pulp production. This ensures that all parties benefit from the collaboration,” says Ragnar Lundberg, VP Technology at Rottneros.

In 2017, approximately 9,000,000 cubic metres of fuel were sold in Sweden, of which about 1,900,000 cubic metres were classified as biofuel, according to the Swedish Petroleum and Biofuels Institute (SPBI). About 15 percent of the biofuel was produced in Sweden, with the rest being imported from other countries.

As a next step in the capacity development of Rottneros Mill, Rottneros’ Board has granted further investments in the CTMP line. The investment, CTMP Step 2, increases capacity by approximately 18,000 tonnes per year and is expected to be operational in the fall of 2018. The investment follows the strategic development plan Agenda 500, where a first capacity-enhancing investment in the CTMP line was made in 2016. Within Agenda 500, Rottneros Mill has put into operation a bio mass boiler in the third quarter of 2017 that replaces an oil-based boiler and made the mill practically fossil-free. The expansion of the purification plant is an ongoing investment that is expected to be put into operation in 2018.

rott logoThe Rottneros Mill has a strong position as a supplier of high yield pulp. With increased capacity, we ensure that Rottneros can be a reliable supplier of CTMP and an attractive partner for our customers, says Lennart Eberleh, President and CEO of Rottneros AB.

The Vallvik Mill was granted a new environmental permit in 2016 which allows production of 255,000 tonnes of chemical pulp per year. The permit also includes increased requirements regarding sulfur emissions. In order to meet the requirements, the mill will invest in a weak gas collection system. Final negotiations with the potential suppliers will begin immediately.  The investment is expected to be put into operation in Q4 2018.

Agenda 500 includes both environmental and capacity investments. For Vallvik Mill, the investment in the weak gas collection system is another environmental investment to ensure the long-term sustainability of the mill, comments Lennart Eberleh, President and CEO of Rottneros.
