UFP_SP_CC_INDIGO_90_2375Today, global paper manufacturer Mondi launched Color Copy indigo and DNS® indigo after working closely with HP over the last year to develop the two uncoated indigo papers for Mondi’s growing digital paper portfolio. Within the field of professional digital printing technology, HP’s Indigo digital presses are quickly gaining prominence among the digital presses on the market.

Color Copy indigo and DNS® indigo received HP’s 3-star certification, which is the highest performance rating for HP Indigo digital presses and indicates the best performance in terms of runnability, fixing and blanket compatibility.

“Indigo technology is optimal for professional printers. During the paper production process a special primer is applied to the paper so HP’s ElectroInk will later adhere properly. This has another major advantage over papers that must be pre-primed at the printer’s – Color Copy indigo and DNS® indigo have an unlimited shelf life. Meaning that you will still achieve exceptional print results on an Indigo machine even if your paper is in storage for a few years,” explains Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

The special primer guarantees 100% ElectroInk adhesion. The layer of the ElectroInk is also much thinner in comparison to other digital inks, which leaves the natural haptics of the paper intact – much like the offset lithographic process.

Characteristic of digital printing technology, HP’s Indigo presses facilitate flexibility in print applications. A smooth, premium paper that delivers high-quality full-colour print results, HP recommended Color Copy indigo particularly for photo books. Color Copy indigo still exhibits the brilliant colours, sharp print-outs and smooth feel of Classic Color Copy, making it a good choice for any graphic-based application.

The high whiteness level of DNS® indigo makes it a distinctive paper well-suited for high contrast text, graphics and colour printing on HP Indigo presses. Because of the contrasts achievable with DNS® indigo, it is recommended for high impact communication such as point of sale material, corporate stationery, company reports and brochures.

Visitors at this year’s Hunkeler Innovation Days had the opportunity to see and feel the qualities of DNS® indigo and Color Copy indigo. Both papers are part of Mondi’s Green Range and are FSC certified. Mondi’s complete digital printing portfolio consists of papers that are also part of Mondi’s Green Range of eco-friendly papers. All Green Range papers are FSC certified, bleached without chlorine, or 100% recycled. Please visit www.mondigroup.com/indigorange for more information on DNS® indigo and Color Copy indigo.

Visitors gained insight into upcoming developments in Mondi’s digital and environmental paper portfolios and areas for paper converting.

ufp_image_dns_2133With Mojito and Cuba Libre scented cocktail menus and food trays made from Mondi paper, this year Mondi enticed visitors to see, feel and smell their entire paper portfolio and myriad applications at Paperworld 2011. Mondi gave visitors plenty to explore with the launch of its 30% recycled paper NAUTILUS® ReFresh TRIOTEC and a preview of Color Copy indigo and DNS indigo, new digital papers ready to hit the market later this month. The continuing development of Mondi’s green and digital printing paper portfolios is a clear priority for the global paper manufacturer.

“We are acutely aware of the markets trends and are in tune with our customers’ current and future needs. We also take our commitment to the environment seriously. Our Green Range line of TCF, FSC certified or 100% recycled papers continues to expand as does our digital printing portfolio and the number of digital papers that bear the Green Range logo,” explains Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

Using TRIOTEC® sandwich technology developed at the Mondi Neusiedler mill in Austria, the outer layers of NAUTILUS® ReFresh TRIOTEC consist of TCF (totally chlorine free) virgin fibre, while the inner layer is made from 30% recycled fibre. Like NAUTILUS® ReFresh TRIOTEC, DNS® indigo and Color Copy indigo are also Green Range papers that belong to Mondi´s digital portfolio. Both HP 3-star approved premium papers, DNS® indigo and Color Copy indigo appeal to professional printers who use HP Indigo digital presses. The 3-star approval is the highest performance rating for HP Indigo digital presses and indicates the best performance in terms of runnability, fixing and blanket compatibility. During the production process of these papers a special primer is applied to ensure perfect adhesion of HP’s ElectroInk.

Customers not only explored the various paper qualities Mondi offers, but also the diverse applications possible with current printing and converting technologies. Paperworld visitors were the first to peruseUFP_Image_2367 Mondi’s new sample book and the communication potential of selecting a paper that reflects a specific corporate identity and marketing message. The sample book compiles BIO TOP 3®, Color Copy,

DNS® premium, IQ Color, NAUTILUS® Universal, NAUTILUS® SuperWhite, and Japanpost (with Molette watermark) for advertising and marketing material, pamphlets, menus, invitations, and complete stationery sets printed on digital and offset technologies.

“The sample book is a good tool for customers to see and feel examples of the print results possible for a diverse assortment of papers and grammages and communications material,” says Mr. Klumpp. “It has been interesting to see visitors examining pamphlets and envelopes made from BIO TOP 3® and then minutes later see them discover that our food trays are also made out of BIO TOP 3®.”

Mondi wins three of the 2010 PPI Awards

Mondi wins at the 2010 PPI Awards gala on November 16, 2010 in Brussels, Belgium.

Vienna, November 19, 2010– Mondi, the global paper and packaging company accepted 3 awards at the 2010 PPI awards in categories for company, mill, and individual achievements:

·         The prize for the environmental strategy of the year in the company category for Mondi Group, Austria

·         The prize for the environmental strategy of the year in the mill category for Mondi SCP in Ruzomberok, Slovakia

·         The prize for the research achievement of the year for Andreas Kornherr from Mondi Uncoated Fine & Kraft Paper

Peter Oswald, CEO of Mondi Europe & International, says: “These awards mean a lot to Mondi. We have worked hard for this and it is gratifying to receive recognition for our efforts in so many areas.”

Environmental strategy of the year in the company category for Mondi

Mondi Group’s overall focus on sustainability is entrenched in the belief that industry should play an important role in the global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the world’s ecosystems. To help meet these challenges, the Group concentrates on a series of environmental commitments regarding carbon-based energy consumption; water consumption; emissions to air and water; waste generation and disposal and recycling of paper and board materials. The award acknowledges the comprehensive environmental improvement programme that spans a 5-year period and is supported by a number of efficiency projects. “We are very grateful to receive such a prestigious award” says Christian Ramaseder, Group Environmental Manager. “It is a testimony to having taken the right actions for reducing our environmental footprint and therefore becoming more resource efficient.”

Environmental strategy of the year in the mill category for Mondi SCP

With the mill’s instrumental IMPULS project, Mondi SCP has implemented further environmental production processes to protect and maintain the ecosystem and beauty of the area. By implementing best available technologies (BAT), Mondi SCP decreased emissions to air by an average of 94% and water by 66%. Fresh water consumption decreased due to waste water reuse made possible by the mill’s biological waste water treatment plant. The mill also achieved reductions in energy consumption, relying primarily on green energy from biogenic sources for production. “We have undertaken significant measures to protect the surrounding environment at Mondi SCP and by doing so we also have a positive effect on the environment globally, “says Roman Senecky, Managing Director at Mondi SCP. “We are pleased to have this acknowledged by winning the award.”

Research achievement of the year in the category for individual achievements

The prize for the research achievement of the year went to Andreas Kornherr of Mondi Uncoated Fine and Kraft Paper. Together with team members Paul Achatz and Gerhard Drexler, and in close cooperation with Prof. Georg Reischl from the University of Vienna’s Physics department, Kornherr was nominated for his Acoustic Dust Tester (ADT), a patented new method, which uses acoustic waves to impose defined mechanical stress on paper sheets to measure nano- and micro particle emissions. Kornherr comments, “It is very fulfilling to be part of a project that has a direct impact on subsequent processes within the paper industry.”

The PPI Awards are organised by RISI, one of the leading information providers about the global forest products industry. The awards aim at honoring leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments within the pulp and paper industry.

The EUR 545 million expansion and modernisation of the Syktyvkar mill in Russia began on July 1, 2008.

David Hathorn, Group CEO of Mondi, comments, “We are proud to announce the successful completion of the STEP project. The project serves as a prime example of Mondi’s strategic approach to invest in assets which will yield great benefits for our customers allowing us to better service the Russian domestic market and export markets in particular.”

The main targets of the investment were to replace obsolete technologies, enhance mill safety, employ additional environmental measures and increase the quality and competitiveness of Mondi’s products.

From left to right: Peter J. Oswald, CEO Mondi Europe & International; Peter Machacek, CEO Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper & Containerboard; Gerhard Kornfeld, Managing Director Mondi Syktyvkar; David Hathorn, Group CEO of Mondi; Reinhold Mitterlehner, Austrian minister of economy, family and youth; Vjacheslav Gaizer, Head of Komi Republic.Peter J. Oswald, CEO Mondi Europe & International, comments on the project’s success: “We are proud to be a part of the new economic rise of Russia and our contribution to Russia’s modernisation with state-of-the-art technology and diversification into value added products. We first presented this project to the Russian government on 6, April 2006. Today, four and a half years later, it has been successfully completed on schedule.”

The investment has enabled Mondi to increase its product quality and output for containerboard, uncoated woodfree and newsprint paper. The wood yard has the capacity to debark and chip four million cubic meters of soft and hardwood logs annually – an increase of 25% – with a projected fibre production of 900 thousand tonnes. Production of board, paper and market pulp is expected to increase by more than 20% to over a million tonnes per year.

Some of the most impressive upgrades are the installation of a new lime kiln with daily burnt lime production of up to 700 tonnes, a new recovery boiler that burns 3,560 tonnes of dry solids per day and a 100MW turbo generator. The mill has also been fitted with modern equipment of the highest possible environmental standards that will reduce daily water consumption by 40% to 206,000m³, trap 99.9% of dust and odorous gases arising from the burning process.Mondi Syktyvkar mill

“The investment is a notable industry achievement,” says Gerhard Kornfeld, Managing Director of Mondi Syktyvkar. “STEP has modernised and increased production in nearly all areas of the production chain. For example, the installation of modern equipment for the processes of chip reception, production and transportation has dramatically increased the mill output.”

The STEP project also proved to be a model of industrial safety. Its safety record is the best ever achieved in the history of the Russian paper industry. At the peak of the project, around 2,000 employees were involved. In total, about 300 partners and mainly local contractors worked on the project.

Mondi launches its new digital printing paper brand DNS®: Digital Needs Specialists

Mondi expands its digital printing portfolio to include DNS®, the new paper brand that offers professional printers a single solution for multiple applications on all digital printing presses. DNS® premium kicks-off the brand-launch as the first paper on the market from the DNS® range.

Mondi launches DNS®as its new brand of uncoated fine papers. “DNS® was developed with the requirements of digital specialists in mind. We recognized that professional printers needed a single paper they could rely on in an industry that demands a lot of versatility,” explains Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper.

DNS® premium is the first product to stem from the DNS®brand. It is produced for use on digital production machines anddry toner machines such as iGen and Nexpress, as well as office laser printers, inkjet printers and copiers, making it a multifaceted product for use in both professional press rooms and offices.

“The launch of DNS® is an exciting milestone in the growth of our digital printing paper portfolio,” says Klumpp. “DNS® premium is also pre-print guaranteed and suitable for off-set printing, which is an attractive feature for professional printers, as having one paper on stock for every printing press is now a realistic option.”

DNS®premium has a high whiteness factor that shows excellent contrast for text and graphic printouts. Due to ColorLok® Technology, office inkjet printers with pigmented ink can also create impressive full colour brochures, presentations or other printed materials that demand high-impact colour saturation.

DNS® premium can be recognized by its purple wrapper with the digital motif of a hand operating a touch screen. “We will be adding more papers to the DNS® brand. Our customers have more to look forward to in the upcoming months,” says Klumpp.

Mondi has spearheaded a number of initiatives in response to the growing digital printing market. During the past year, Mondi introduced its ongoing series of Digital Specialist Forums, where professional printers and key customers familiar with professional and office printing environments convene to discuss current and upcoming trends in digital printing.

DNS®premium and the digital printing paper portfolio are developed and produced by Mondi Neusiedler, a mill renowned for its innovations, high quality paper production and environmental standards. DNS®premium is certified with the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) mark and the EU-Flower. It also belongs to Mondi’s Green Range. All Green Range papers are either FSC®-certified, bleached without chlorine (TCF) or 100% recycled.

The Green Range reflects Mondi’s commitment to responsible manufacturing practices, as all products are produced according to the leading environmental and social guidelines. Keeping a steady focus on sustainability, Mondi continually strives for the careful selection and responsible use of raw materials and for significant reductions in emissions to air, water and land. The leading environmental position was recently recognized by WWF – Mondi ranks as number one in the global paper company environmental index.

Color Copy announces its newly designed paper wrapper and CO2 neutral status. The new customer-friendly packaging incorporates a modernized design with more product and environmental information.

Vienna, August 24, 2010 – Color Copy, the professional digital colour laser paper from Mondi, will launch its re-designed environmentally friendly packaging in September 2010. Following the decision to switch from a transparent plastic wrapper to a paper one, Mondi also decided to make Color Copy a CO2 neutral product.

Customers will still recognize Color Copy by its playful cyan, magenta, and yellow design; however, the wrapper now clearly displays the paper’s environmental accreditations, grammage and format. Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Uncoated Fine Paper, explains the motivation for the design change: “The environment is a main concern for our customers and for Mondi. The new paper wrapper displays the FSC, Green Range, EU Ecolabel, and CO2 neutral logos directly on the front side, while further environmental information is detailed on the back of the ream. The switch to paper packaging means less plastic waste for our customers – and for the environment.”

As a fully CO2 neutral product, Color Copy offers customers an additional environmental advantage. Like every other industrial process, the production of Color Copy emits CO2. These emissions are neutralized through verified emission reduction programmes that Mondi invests in. By purchasing Color Copy the customer takes a more proactive role in reducing CO2 emissions and countering the deleterious effects of climate change.

The new easy-to-read wrapper provides product information on the backside, including key facts about Mondi’s Green Range, Color Copy’s FSC certification, the EU Ecolabel and a description about making Color Copy a CO2 neutral product. It also includes images of the entire Color Copy line, grammages and sizes.

“For the past two years, Color Copy has been a FOGRA benchmark leader in overall total print quality,” says Johannes Klumpp. “Color Copy was the first paper specifically developed for color laser printing and we are continually developing and adapting this product to meet the needs and values of our customers and the growing digital print industry.”

Color Copy is available in grammages from 90 to 350 gsm, and A4, A3, SRA3, A3+, folio formats, continuous web reels and Xeikon reels. Color Copy is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified and is part of Mondi’s Green Range family. All Green Range papers are FSC-certified, totally chlorine free (TCF) or 100% recycled.
