A strikingly original new swatch book for Mondi’s BIO TOP 3®, designed with the needs of creative industries in mind, is now available in Europe. A well-known brand in its 28th year on the market, BIO TOP 3® is already widely recognised as a premium uncoated off-white paper with a best-in-class environmental profile. The new swatch book, with the theme ‘by Nature’, shows off the quality and versatility of the BIO TOP 3® portfolio while highlighting its pure and authentic appeal.

‘It’s not a shade, it’s an attitude’ is the tagline of BIO TOP 3® -- and the new swatch book has plenty of attitude. The offset printed book provides beautiful examples of colour printing and blind embossing in a section entitled ‘inspired by Nature’. Another section called ‘versatile by Nature’, which is stitched to the cover of the swatch book, clearly explains the versatile applications and benefits of BIO TOP 3® in areas such as corporate communication, book printing, packaging and others.

Jutta Wacht, Art Director at the Austrian creative agency Say Say Say, Inc., which designed the swatch book, explained the two-part concept: “BIO TOP 3®’s versatility and its natural shade inspired us to create a multidimensional swatch book that consists of a practical part showing the versatility of applications in a visual approachable way, and an emotional part – a detachable book – featuring the most fascinating landscapes on earth and its sublime colour shades that pay tribute to BIO TOP 3®’s natural shade.”

In touch with the needs of eco-conscious designers and printers

Professional designers, printers and publishers who seek an authentic, natural, sustainable look and feel for their projects will find what they need in the BIO TOP 3® portfolio. Mondi offers BIO TOP 3® next in folio and reels for professionals in digital, preprint and offset printing; BIO TOP 3® high-speed inkjet in reels for full colour high-speed inkjet applications with special surface treatment for dye and pigment ink; BIO TOP 3® extra for all sustainable office printing needs; and matching BIO TOP 3® envelopes.

The swatch book was printed in Austria by Holzhausen Druck GmbH. Hannes Fauland Jr., Customer Service at Holzhausen, was impressed by the paper’s printability and results: “The BIO TOP 3® book turned out to be exceptionally beautiful. The paper is really outstanding to print on – we used normal offset printing. I had left a sample of the swatch book in a meeting room and a regular customer of mine looked through it. He has already decided to use BIO TOP 3® for his next book.”

Luděk Lorenc, Chief Technical Officer at the Czech printing house PB tisk, also believes in the paper’s advantages: “We used BIO TOP 3® next for printing the book Kmeny, as this paper fully met requirements given by the publisher. BIO TOP 3® next was the ideal choice for this project due to its natural shade, high bulk and trouble-free runnability. Based on our good experience with this paper, we have decided to include BIO TOP 3® next in our sample book of materials for book printing.”

Sustainable. Every day.

In addition to its unique off-white shade and high bulk, BIO TOP 3® also has an impeccable environmental profile that will appeal to those seeking credibility and authenticity in communication. It is totally chlorine free (TCF) bleached and made without optical brightening agents (OBAs) to retain its natural off-white shade and pleasant uncoated feel. The paper is produced exclusively at the ISO 14001 certified Mondi Neusiedler mill in Austria from FSC™ certified resources. BIO TOP 3® is part of Mondi’s Green Range and carries the EU Ecolabel as well as the Austrian Ecolabel and is available with a CO2 neutral option.

BIO TOP 3® is a premium uncoated off-white paper that is inspired by nature and conveys a natural, sustainable attitude in whatever printed materials it is used for.

Customers impressed by new Mondi portfolio of high-end design papers

PERGRAPHICA® is Mondi’s portfolio of premium uncoated fine papers designed for the exacting needs of the creative and commercial print industries. Since its launch last year, numerous graphic designers, printers and publishers have made the switch to PERGRAPHICA® design papers – and are delighted by the results.

Known as ‘Paper for Perfectionists’, PERGRAPHICA® fulfils the most demanding requirements for sophisticated and elegant printed documents while meeting top sustainability standards. The portfolio provides excellent printability on a choice of textures, shades and weights. It is available in two textures (Rough and Smooth), three shades (High White, Classic and Natural) and six grammages between 90 and 300 g/m2. Customers in many European countries can purchase PERGRAPHICA® through local distribution companies.

Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, said, “We are pleased by PERGRAHICA®’s quick success on the market and the wonderful feedback we’ve received from customers. It shows how well this portfolio suits the needs of the creative industries. With its look and feel, PERGRAPHICA® reflects emotions that bring your story to life.”

More customer focused than you expect. Every day.

PERGRAPHICA® is FSC® certified, making it the logical choice of paper for the Forest Stewardship Council Germany’s 2016 magazine. Dr Uwe Sayer, Managing Director of FSC Germany, stated, “As an international certification organisation, we make sure to use paper that bears our certification and further fulfils high environmental standards. With PERGRAPHICA® paper we could give our FSC magazine a distinctly higher value, which was immediately accessible to each reader and about which we have received numerous positive reader comments.”

The Lokay printing house was responsible for printing the 2016 FSC Germany magazine. They used PERGRAPHICA® Natural Smooth in 300 g/qm for the cover and 150 g/qm for the inside pages. It was a positive experience, reported Thomas Fleckenstein of Druckerei Lokay: “The large format colour images and full colour images came out very well despite the open, natural surfaces. The paper dried very quickly and could be handled after a short time. Thanks to an above average bulk of 1.3, the magazine achieved very high-value haptics – so our customer was impressed by more than just the visual effect.”

The Italian print magazine Digitalic has chosen PERGRAPHICA® for the cover production. Francesco Marino, Digitalic’s founder and director, most appreciates the freedom that it allows for different printing technologies. He commented, “PERGRAPHICA® gives us the freedom to do almost anything. Our magazine covers use different printing processes, and PERGRAPHICA® maintains its qualities unchanged even after very different finishes. The creative level is a great advantage for us, as we can envisage anything for our covers and produce it, knowing that the paper will best realise our vision.”

The Austrian magazine PRINT & PUBLISHING used PERGRAPHICA® for its Summer 2016 edition. They chose to print on High White Smooth for the cover and Classic Rough for the inside pages. Michael Seidl, Managing Editor of the magazine, considered the outcome a success: “We could not be more impressed by the haptics, the satiny surfaces and the unbelievably high quality of the photo reproduction. We’ve also had positive feedback from our readers and advertising customers. The printing house and printers we used for the project likewise spoke positively about the papers’ printability.”

Since its launch, PERGRAPHICA® has won the admiration of many Russian designers and printers, who spoke of their positive experiences at the business breakfast event in October, organized by Double V and Mondi (A full report from the event can be found on the Facebook page of Russian distribution company Double V.). Demonstrating that the applications of PERGRAPHICA® are limitless, is the project of the designer Marina Adamova, who designed the photo sets for Avon’s advertising campaign in Russia. She found that unprinted PERGRAPHICA® makes the perfect backdrop for product photo shoots. She cited two reasons: its strength and flexibility make it perfect for cutting and folding by hand, and only this paper produces the correct shadows. Her Avon winter set images can be viewed at http://www.talamaskanka.com/avon-winter-set

The world-famous Bolshoi Theatre of Russia is another satisfied customer of PERGRAPHICA® Yury Tikhonov, Director of the Bolshoi Theatre printing house, said, “The paper we have chosen for the Bolshoi programmes reflects how we interact with the audience. Here, PERGRAPHICA® is a unique paper. It does not only share emotions, visualise images and promote creativity and inspiration, but enhances the status and highlights the best traditions of the theatre as well. The paper proves perfect in printing, aside from its splendid performance. This is truly the paper for perfectionists! With PERGRAPHICA® we never doubt the result.”

Local distribution partners add to customer convenience

Mondi uses a network of distribution partners to sell PERGRAPHICA® in certain European markets. Customers can obtain samples and place orders through their local paper merchant. In many European countries clients can obtain samples and purchase PERGRAPHICA® through local distribution companies. In central and eastern Europe, it is sold through Europapier. It is available in Germany from Paper Union, in Italy from Burgo Distribuzione, and in Russia from Double V.

Innovative and flexible qualities

Mondi left no stone unturned in developing PERGRAHPICA® as a premium design paper. To ensure optimal colour reproduction, Mondi worked with X-rite, the industrial leader in colour management systems and has developed specific ICC profiles and CxF files for the PERGRAPHICA® range.

As a hybrid printing paper, PERGRAPHICA® works well with all printing technologies. It delivers consistent, high-quality results for both offset and digital printing, as well as excellent haptics thanks to its above-average bulk. It is also well-suited to a variety of post-print processing such as cellophaning, embossing, creasing, die-cutting and more. PERGRAPHICA® is available in standard folio formats 64x90 cm SG/LG, 72x102 cm SG/LG and other folio formats upon request.

Sustainable. Every day.

PERGRAPHICA® is a Mondi Green Range product – one of many that support customers in going green. It is FSC® certified for responsible forestry, bears the EU’s Ecolabel and is produced exclusively in an ISO 14001-certified mill. It is also the only design paper brand included in the WWF’s ‘Check Your Paper’ resource for third-party audited, environmentally friendly pulp and paper products (checkyourpaper.panda.org).

Launched last year, PERGRAPHICA® is Mondi’s portfolio of premium uncoated fine papers designed for the exacting needs of the creative and commercial print industries. Since then, it has won the admiration of many in the graphic design and printing industries across Europe. To celebrate the success of this new portfolio, Mondi sponsored awards in two print & design competitions: the Joseph Binder Award and the Golden Pixel Award.

The Joseph Binder Award is an international competition focused on graphic design and illustration. More than 300 graphic designers and illustrators from 27 countries entered their projects for the 2016 awards, which were presented on 10 November at an awards ceremony in Vienna. (More information and pictures from the event can be found on the Joseph Binder Award Facebook page.)

As sponsor of the award category for ‘Editorial Design Books’, Mondi presented the trophy to gold award winner Konstantin Eremenko of Eremenko Visual Communication agency. He won for a fascinating book project called ‘Rediscovering’, a visual interpretation of the periodic table of the elements in the chronological order of their discovery. Mr Eremenko commented, “My challenge as a graphic designer was to find a new way of visually explaining epistemological knowledge. The haptic effect was quite important for the combination of paper texture and multi-layered silkscreen printing.”

The Golden Pixel Award recognises progressive and innovative printing projects in Austria. In 2016 Mondi sponsored the category for ‘(Multi)sensory Projects’ and presented the award at the ceremony in November. The winning project was the HoHo brochure, produced by printing house Ferdinand Berger and Sons for their client Kerbler Holding. Commenting on the paper choice, Mario Vucic of Ferdinand Berger and Sons said, “It is not only the haptics of the paper – the visual and olfactory effects should also have an immediate impact. Only then are all elements joined through the symbiosis of the material and the print craftsmanship to produce a virtual work of art.”

Caroline Palfy, project leader for the HoHo brochure at Kerbler Holding, was pleased with the award-winning result: “The haptic experience – from the cover to the last page – is simply magnificent!”

About the Environmental Paper Company Index

The Environmental Paper Company Index which evaluates a company´s overall performance started in its current form in 2010. The Index credits transparency and improvements over time – data are kept confidential and are published in aggregated form only. Companies receive benchmarking report cards comparing their performance on each parameter to the average of other comparable participants. Participation today covers 15% of the world paper and 15% of the world´s pulp production. It has increased from 5 participants in 2010, to 15 (in 19 product categories) in 2011, 25 participants (in 40 product categories) in 2013 and 31 participants (in 52 product categories) in 2015 with the following regional spread: (participants by region/headquarter locations: 14 Europe, 8 North America, 6 South/Central America, 2 Asia, 1 Africa).

WWF´s Check your Paper Method reduces the complexity of evaluating a paper’s footprint by using relatively few, but carefully selected, environmental indicators.

The international packaging and paper group Mondi has launched a new photo contest called “Think colorful with Mondi’s Color Copy”.  The main prize, a trip to Iceland for two persons to see the Northern Lights, reflects Color Copy’s central theme “Our inspiration: nature’s brilliant colors”. “Color Copy’s inimitable performance in full color reproduction is simply one-of-a-kind, as is its status being one of the only CO2 neutral color laser papers on the market. This combination of outstanding colors and commitment to nature is perfectly mirrored in our top prize, explains Johannes Klumpp, Marketing & Sales Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper. “When you think of nature’s brilliant colors, what better inspiration is there than to see the aurora borealis, nature’s own light show dancing across the sky? The only difference is that while sightings of the Northern Lights can never be guaranteed, your satisfaction with Color Copy is 100% guaranteed, every day,” concludes Klumpp.

The company’s commitment is underpinned by close collaborations with NGOs such as WWF International, Silver Taiga in Russia and Wessa in South Africa. Mondi is looking back at a highly successful Drupa 2016 where the company showcased its innovative offer as the one-stop paper manufacturer for the professional printing industry. Among Mondi’s many highlights were a paper house illustrating the comprehensive paper solutions Mondi offers featuring a paper art gallery, live print runs of the new high-speed inkjet paper NEUJET® and a cutting-edge 3D printer using BIO TOP 3®.

Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper presented its wide range of professional paper solutions at the Drupa fair in Düsseldorf, Germany from 31 May to 10 June. As a one-stop paper manufacturer, Mondi offers sustainable paper solutions for all printing technologies and needs.

Johannes Klumpp, marketing & sales director Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, explains, “We have had a very successful Drupa! On the one hand, we have proudly exhibited our professional print portfolio and have had interesting discussions with around 1400 customers. On the other hand, we have learned more about trends in printing technologies with our OEM partners.”

A house made of paper

Klumpp points out that “One of the highlights of the booth at Drupa was the Mondi ‘paper house’ reflecting Mondi’s one-stop paper manufacturer approach.” In this house, visitors could feel at home, be well taken care of, discover the creative environment of an art gallery and personally experience a variety of paper haptics. The house consisted of panels covered with natural-shaded BIO TOP 3® next and the high-white DNS® premium as well as an attractive grey shade of Mondi’s tinted paper. In the upstairs area Mondi’s customers could withdraw from the hectic rush of the trade show routine – much like in a living room. On the ground floor a dedicated art gallery opened up a whole new world for visitors who could admire different art objects reflecting the duality of the whole booth between the rational and the emotional world. Furthermore, visitors were invited to experience the different shades and haptics of Mondi papers with touchpads on the house. “All of these details combined the approach that people are in touch with Mondi products every day and that our paper can do much more than one would expect,” adds Klumpp.

Sustainable. Every day.

A tree made of wood and paper reflected Mondi’s clear sustainability commitment. For Mondi, sustainability makes good business sense hence is one of its key drivers and was also a key topic for Drupa. All Mondi uncoated fine paper branded products are part of Mondi’s Green Range, meaning that they are FSC® or PEFC™ certified, 100% recycled or totally chlorine free bleached (TCF). Mondi continually invests in making its mills and production plants as energy efficient and sustainable as possible. Customers have the best paper solutions combined with proven, environmentally sound production – every day.

NEUJET® – bringing high-speed inkjet paper to a new level

The NEUJET® portfolio was presented at Drupa with live print runs on an Océ ColorStream 3700 Z high-speed digital inkjet printing press by Canon. NEUJET® represents Mondi’s next generation of high-speed inkjet papers and visitors were especially impressed by the smooth surface and vivid colours on NEUJET® silk. The portfolio is optimised for medium to heavy colour direct mails, graphic arts and book printing applications. NEUJET® is offered in two quality levels, standard and premium, and two surface finishes, matte and silk, closing the gap to coated offset printing.

PERGRAPHICA® design papers attract attention

PERGRAPHICA® - Mondi’s design paper range called ‘Paper for Perfectionists’ - caught a lot of attention at Drupa. Customers could assure themselves that it fulfils the most demanding requirements for sophisticated and elegant printed documents. The printed samples and attractive marketing materials for PERGRAPHICA® showed the variety of options: two textures (Rough and Smooth), three shades (High White, Classic and Natural) and six grammages between 90 and 300 g/m2. Produced in Austria and FSC® and EU Ecolabel certified, it is sold through a network of long-term distribution partners Europapier (Austria and CEE), Papierunion/Inapa Group (Germany), Burgo Distribuzione (Italy), and Double V (Russia).

3D print as highlight at Drupa and at the Mondi booth

Mondi has partnered with Mcor, an innovative manufacturer of the world’s most affordable, full-colour, safe and eco-friendly 3D printers, on the development of paper optimised for Mcor 3D printers. At Drupa Mondi featured the recently launched Mcor ARKe printing full colour paper 3D models – printing with Mondi’s BIO TOP 3® next. BIO TOP 3® next is an off-white uncoated hybrid printing paper ensuring high impact reproductions that catch attention. The paper is extremely versatile and meets the highest requirements: it combines an elegant look with an extensive environmental profile. Produced totally chlorine free (TCF), the paper retains a natural uncoated feel with an off-white shade and has been found to be optimally suited for Mcor 3D printers. Mcor ARKe uniquely employs the global-standard ICC colour map to provide the industry’s most accurate, photorealistic colour 3D. Dr Conor MacCormack, co-founder & CEO of Mcor concludes: “This year the Drupa show truly brought the 2D and 3D printing worlds together. 3D printing using Mondi’s BIO TOP3® next paper delivers high quality colour models at a low price and it is eco-friendly and safe.”

Customer focused innovation – every day

Another highlight of the professional print portfolio were the hybrid printing papers providing flexibility in the printing technology used and high print quality all at once. “We are strongly committed to continuously developing our portfolio serving our customers’ needs.  At the same time, we adapt our papers to the technology developments in the professional printing industry,” explains Johannes Klumpp. “Mondi and the Neusiedler mill are well known for innovative, high quality papers produced in a sustainable way. Our clear dedication to quality leadership is demonstrated in one of our latest innovations in our premium hybrid segment.” Under the slogan “one quality – one mill – one look”, Mondi Neusiedler sets a new quality reference guaranteeing hybrid offset, preprint and laser printing. Professional printers, creative agencies and end users will benefit from consistent print quality and one shade from 50 – 400 g/m² with DNS® premium, MAESTRO® extra and IQ premium.

Mondi Containerboard at RosUpack 2016 in Moscow

From 14 to 17 June 2016 Mondi Containerboard will be showcasing its highly functional virgin paper grades at RosUpack in Moscow, Russia, bringing along its latest improvements to the "Nordic Fibre Paper" ProVantage Komiwhite.

prvw 0 40376“Mondi Containerboard has been driving improvements in its Appearance portfolio recently. With the modernised paper machine PM21 at our Syktyvkar mill in Russia last year, we boosted the quality of the ProVantage Komiwhite grade. It is a first-class paper for strong, shelf-ready packaging solutions that seek to catch the eye with a bright and attractive appearance, and paves the way for enhanced branding,” says Florian Stockert, Sales Director Containerboard at Mondi Europe & International.

Customer focused. Every day – Get to know Mondi’s improved Appearance grade

ProVantage Komiwhite is an exclusive white top kraftliner benefitting from the strength of Nordic fibres. The enhanced quality is delivering a variety of advantages to corrugated box producers as regards strength, runnability, printability and overall appearance. “Alongside corrugators, end-users will also benefit from the properties associated with our latest ProVantage Komiwhite upgrade, including stronger box performance, lightweight packaging solutions, and enhanced branding options. This paper can make products more visible and set them apart from the competition. Final packaging performance depends not only on the packaging design, but also on the paper grades used during production. To achieve excellent performance, top-quality paper grades are essential,” comments Stockert.

Performance driven. Every day – Increasing speed and reducing material waste

Paper runnability on the corrugator is determined to a large extent by paper profiles and glue absorption. Good paper profiles and proper glue absorption not only allow higher production speeds, but also reduce material waste, thus bolstering corrugators’ profitability. “As a result of rebuilding PM21 we have improved paper profiles and modified the paper surface, allowing better glue absorption with our paper. Successful customer trials with our new white top kraftliner quality have demonstrated that the improved ProVantage Komiwhite offers several benefits to corrugating packaging businesses", as Pavel Kolegov, Technical Customer Service Mondi Containerboard, explains, “Thanks to thinner layers of glue, lower steam consumption, a reduced risk of washboard defects, and increased corrugator speed, faster production can now be achieved.”

Find out more about Mondi Containerboard’s ProVantage Komiwhite by visiting the Mondi booth (Pavilion 1, Hall 4, D103) at the RosUpack fair from 14 to 17 June. Mondi’s Containerboard team look forward to welcoming you and helping you discover new ideas for your packaging.

Visit the Mondi booth at Drupa from 31 May to 10 June in hall 4, booth C21. Mondi’s team of paper experts looks forward to welcoming you and showing how Mondi offers more than you expect for professional printing. Every day.
