We look forward to exhibiting at Drupa and showcasing our wide-ranging innovative paper solutions developed to meet the exacting needs of professional printers and the latest printing technologies.”

Sustainable. Every day.

Sustainability is one of the key drivers of Mondi’s business and will be a key topic for Drupa. All Mondi uncoated fine paper branded products are part of Mondi’s Green Range, meaning that they are FSC® or PEFC™ certified, 100% recycled or totally chlorine free bleached (TCF). Mondi continually invests in making its mills and production plants as energy efficient and sustainable as possible. For Mondi, sustainability makes good business sense - every day.

Mondi house at Drupa – innovations in touch with the emotions of paper

Mondi’s booth will show visitors both the technical and the emotional sides of the paper world. On the one hand, Mondi demonstrates its commitment to innovative paper solutions for the latest professional printing technologies with the Océ ColorStream 3000 Z high-speed digital inkjet printing press provided by Canon and the Mcor ARKe 3D printer. On the other hand, paper also conveys an emotional element through its shades and how it feels to the touch. One of the highlights of the booth is the Mondi ‘paper house’ reflecting Mondi’s one-stop paper manufacturer approach. In this house, visitors can feel at home, be well taken care of, discover the creative environment of an art gallery and personally experience a variety of paper haptics.

Innovative. Every day

“We are strongly committed to continuously developing our portfolio serving our customers’ needs. At the same time, we adapt our papers to the technology developments in the professional printing industry,” explains Johannes Klumpp. “Mondi and the Neusiedler mill are well known for innovative, high-quality papers produced in a sustainable way. Our clear dedication to quality leadership is demonstrated in one of our latest innovations in our premium hybrid segment.”

Under the slogan ‘one quality – one mill – one look’, Mondi Neusiedler sets a new quality reference guaranteeing hybrid offset, preprint and laser printing. Professional printers, creative agencies and end users will benefit from consistent print quality and one shade from 50 – 400 g/m² with DNS® premium, MAESTRO® extra and IQ premium.

Professional printing paper campaign ‘We have the perfect pape® for you’

At Drupa, Mondi will showcase its complete range of professional printing paper and board. The new Pro Paper campaign ‘We have the perfect pape® for you’ reflects Mondi’s approach to act as one-stop paper manufacturer for the professional printing industry. The Pro Paper portfolio encompasses all of Mondi’s paper optimised for the needs of professional printers with different printing technologies. Some of the most recent additions to Mondi’s portfolio for professional printers include:

  • NEUJET®, Mondi’s newest high-speed inkjet paper. The full NEUJET® portfolio will be presented at Drupa. It represents Mondi’s next generation of high-speed inkjet papers optimised for medium to heavy colour, direct mail, graphic arts and book printing applications. The portfolio is offered in two quality levels, standard and premium, and two surface finishes, matte and silk, closing the gap to coated offset printing.
  • PERGRAPHICA® design papers. PERGRAPHICA® is called ‘Paper for Perfectionists’ because it fulfils the most demanding requirements for sophisticated and elegant printed documents. Graphic designers, advertising agencies and fine book publishers are just a few of the creative industries that will appreciate PERGRAPHICA®’s variety of options: two textures (Rough and Smooth), three shades (High White, Classic and Natural) and six grammages between 90 and 300 g/m2. It is produced in Austria and FSC®and EU Ecolabel certified. PERGRAPHICA® is sold exclusively through Mondi’s long-term distribution partners Europapier (Austria and CEE), Papierunion/Inapa Group (Germany), Burgo Distribuzione (Italy), and Double V (Russia).

Live print demonstrations on Mondi paper

Visitors to Drupa can see Mondi paper in action on various printing equipment – both at the Mondi booth and at the booths of printing equipment manufacturers with which Mondi works closely. Mondi’s own booth will feature demonstrations on an Océ ColorStream 3000 Z high-speed digital inkjet printing press provided by Canon and featuring Hunkeler finishing equipment. Visitors can take with them print-outs on a variety of Mondi uncoated fine papers specifically tailored for high-speed inkjet printing. For example, NEUJET® as well as high-speed inkjet optimised DNS® and recycled paper NAUTILUS® will be demonstrated on the Canon printing press at the Mondi booth.

Throughout the Drupa fair grounds, several partner companies will be using Mondi papers in their live printing demonstrations: Canon (hall 8a booth B50), Domino (hall 5, booth A23), FujiFilm (hall 1, booth B19 and hall 8b, booth A25), Hewlett Packard (hall 17), Komori (hall 15, booth D4), Konica Minolta (hall 8b, booth A65), RISO (hall 5, booth C20), Screen (hall 8a, booth C11), Xanté (hall 5, booth D03), Xeikon (hall 8a, booth B20), and Xerox (hall 8b, booth A62).

X-Rite Pantone colour management master classes

In collaboration with X-Rite Pantone, Mondi will offer seminars on colour management before and during the Drupa fair. On 10 May, customers can take part in a Mondi webinar called ‘Colour Management in Practice’.

During the Drupa fair, Mondi and X-Rite Pantone, global leader in colour science and technology, will co-host several colour management master classes at the Mondi booth. X-Rite Pantone will present the theoretical part of the master class, which was developed in collaboration with Mondi and is based on ICC (International Colour Consortium) profiles customised to the company’s papers. Mondi colour experts will be on site for the live demonstrations – showing in particular the specific complexity when printing full colour with high-speed inkjet technology.

Mondi now also provides ICC profiles for different printing technologies and specifically for the Mondi paper portfolio. This is to ensure consistent colour performance on any Mondi paper and with any printing technology, making it even easier for professional printers to attain perfect print results quickly and efficiently.

Industry partnership in 3D printing completes Mondi’s offer

In addition, Mondi has partnered with Mcor, an innovative manufacturer of the world’s most affordable, full-colour, safe and eco-friendly 3D printers, on the development of paper optimised for Mcor 3D printers. Mcor recently launched the Mcor ARKe, the world’s first, full-colour, desktop 3D printer and at Drupa Mondi will feature the Mcor ARKe printing full colour paper 3D models. Mcor ARKe uniquely employs the global-standard ICC colour map to provide the industry’s most accurate, photorealistic colour 3D printing and was named Best of Innovation Awards Honoree in the 3D Printing Product category at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2016.

Visit the Mondi booth at Drupa from 31 May to 10 June in hall 4, booth C21. Mondi’s team of paper experts looks forward to welcoming you and showing how Mondi offers more than you expect for professional printing. Every day.

wwf logo pandaUsing wood more efficiently to meet projected demand for wood-based products in Europe should be at the heart of the European Commission’s bioenergy strategy and circular economy, according to a new report.

The report, Mapping Study on Cascading Use of Wood Products[1], commissioned by WWF and global packaging and paper group Mondi, looks at how regulation either hinders or promotes what is known as ‘cascading use’ of wood – prioritising value adding non-fuel uses so wood is burned for energy only after it has been used, re-used and recycled as a material first wherever possible.

“Demand for wood-based materials and energy is projected to increase threefold worldwide between 2010 and 2050. We urgently need to innovate and make more products from fewer resources to help reduce pressure on our forests”, says Emmanuelle Neyroumande, Manager: Forest Product Consumption & Footprint at WWF International.

“Cascading use of wood is the smart way to use a natural resource – putting it to good use before it is reused, recycled and finally burnt for energy. Taking wood straight from the forest and burning it just doesn’t make sense if it can be used for other products first”, says Peter Oswald, CEO Mondi Europe and International.

The report's findings suggest the need for: a broadly accepted definition of cascading use among policymakers, researchers and industry; EU policy guidance that incentivises effective cascading use; as well as better integration and implementation of existing bio-energy and waste policies.

At a national level, the analysis found that countries such as Finland and Germany had practices that promote cascading wood use and recycling; and that while others like Spain had advanced policies in place, these were challenged by poor integration with other policies.

It also revealed that the need for cascading use was felt more acutely in countries with relative scarcity of wood resources, such as Germany, and more weakly in countries with a relative abundance, such as Poland.  In Germany, where 50% of the wood resource (recycled or virgin) is used for bioenergy, increasing demand could only be satisfied by imports, more cascading use or the expansion of the forest area from which wood can be harvested.

We urge the European Commission to take the report’s recommendations into account for the sustainable bioenergy policy up to 2030 and as they take forward activities related to the circular economy. We believe the Commission needs to provide guidance to the Member States on how best to integrate cascading use of wood into relevant national policies.

The European Commission consultation on a sustainable post-2020 bioenergy strategy is now open until 10 May 2016.

WWF has published a position paper, which states that “Cascading use of biomass as well as combined heat and power production need to be incentivised where appropriate" (WWF 2012). Mondi has a similar position, aligned to the one of CEPI, which is to “Place the cascading use principle at the core of its climate and energy policy, with a view to ensure the most efficient use of the available biomass, in particular to contribute to the EU growth and jobs objectives”.

Full range of recycled papers with extensive certification at Drupa 2016
New “Yes, we plant” Green Range campaign for office papers

Mondi is expanding its portfolio of recycled papers with NAUTILUS® ProCycle, a bright white 100% recycled paper with Blue Angel and EU Ecolabel certification. As a special extra, the NAUTILUS® range offers ColorLok technology for more intense inkjet colours and faster drying ink. “The expanded NAUTILUS® portfolio offers customers a full range of recycled papers and certifications to satisfy everyone’s needs”, stated Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, Europe & International. “Market demand for bright white recycled paper with Blue Angel environmental certification has been rising for some time, and our new NAUTILUS® ProCycle paper meets this customer need. Our customers are our priority – each and every day,” continued Mr Klumpp.

Sustainable paper – every day
2016 02 02 085816Blue Angel is one of the oldest, most prestigious environmental certification in Germany. Consumers can have confidence that certified products and services meet high environmental, health and performance standards. Products and services bearing the Blue Angel label must satisfy criteria that have been developed for each product group. “To satisfy the strict Blue Angel certification standards and our own high quality standards for recycled paper production, we looked for a reliable partner to supply us with recovered paper. After a thorough search, we found a competent partner we could work with over the long term”, explained Mr Klumpp. The use of high quality recovered paper allows Mondi to achieve a target whiteness of 140 CIE (ISO 100) with no optical brighteners, thereby satisfying the Blue Angel requirements. “This is an important step in our product development that allows us to meet customer needs as a leading producer offering a complete portfolio of recycled papers under the NAUTILUS® brand”, stated Mr Klumpp. “The paper provides a pleasing bright white with no tint”, he continued.

Mondi launches new Green Range campaign
Mondi launches a new campaign for its Green Range office paper under the motto “Yes, we plant!”. The campaign deals with the topics of sustainable forestry and responsible paper production, but maintains an easy-going attitude. The Green Range online game plays a central role, because it skilfully combines entertainment with information. Participants can win attractive prizes each month, such as a “fair phone” or “paper trophy”. Participation is even worthwhile without prizes, as Mondi donates one euro for each registered user to NGO OroVerde, which makes concrete, sustainable contributions to the protection of rainforests and biodiversity every day. “We would like to invite all of our customers and consumers to plant, play and win in our new online game. Learning about sustainability has never been so entertaining”, encouraged Johannes Klumpp.

Every player in the Green Range online game also plants trees

Mondi Green 173Mondi launches a new campaign for its Green Range office paper under the motto “Yes, we plant!”. The campaign deals with the topics of sustainable forestry and responsible paper production, but maintains an easy-going attitude. The Green Range online game plays a central role, because it skilfully combines entertainment with information. Players can win attractive prizes each month, such as a “fair phone” or “paper trophy”. The “fair phone” uses conflict-free minerals, is produced under safe working conditions and workers are fairly paid. It also has a longer life-cycle than the normal telephone, thereby reducing waste. Participating is even worthwhile without prizes, as Mondi donates one euro for each registered user to NGO OroVerde, which makes concrete, sustainable contributions to the protection of rainforests and biodiversity every day. A tree is planted for each player in the online game – a concrete contribution that every individual can make. “We would like to invite all of our customers and consumers to plant, play and win in our new online game. What is Mondi Green Range?

Green Range is Mondi’s umbrella trademark for sustainable paper and packaging solutions. All Mondi uncoated fine papers belong to the Green Range. They are produced from FSC® or PEFC™ certified wood from sustainably managed forests or 100% recycled paper, or are produced totally chlorine free (TCF). This is how consumers can make a contribution – every day.

New laboratory in Graz, Austria, to research fibre swelling and its impact on paper characteristics

A project supported by Mondi, the new “Christian Doppler (CD) Laboratory for Fibre Swelling and Paper Performance” was officially opened 11 January 2016. The laboratory headed by Ulrich Hirn was set up in cooperation with the Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) and the industry partners Océ Holding B.V (Netherlands), a leading producer of digital printing machinery, especially in the field of high-speed inkjet printing and Mondi, the international packaging and paper Group.

The team of the CD Laboratory will investigate swelling and de-swelling processes during paper production, printing and converting. Ulrich Hirn explains that, “in modern high-speed inkjet printing presses the fibre swelling is crucial: less swelling means faster drying but fibre swelling also has a positive impact on paper stability. Based on our investigations we will develop simulation models of the different processes. We aim to find solutions to further improve the paper, the printing including inks and equipment as well as the converting in close collaboration with our industrial partners”.

At the opening ceremony, Harald Kainz, Rector of TU Graz, and sponsoring partner representatives Leo Arpa from Mondi and Michael Pohlt from Océ pointed out the positive elements of this collaboration of science and industry. They specifically highlighted the development of meaningful results for the industry, the creation of a powerful network of expertise for solving industrial and scientific questions, and the development of a talent pool of young technicians and scientists available for the industry.

ColorCopy frog banner 520x130 sticker

Mondi’s Color Copy contest platform reports 340 photos uploaded and over 100,000 page views

The international packaging and paper Group Mondi announces the winners of their latest photo contest, which called on all participants to ‘Capture nature’s brilliant colours’ and upload their wildlife photos to the Color Copy online platform. Between September 1st and November 15th 340 photos were uploaded to the platform, which had over 100,000 page views during the promotion period. First prize – a photo safari for two to South Africa - goes to Gabriela Klocháňová from Slovakia with her picture of an imposing frog entitled ‘I am the BOSS‘.

“We were really pleased with the success of the Color Copy photo competition and how well it was received by our merchants as well as end-users. The statistics speak for themselves with more than 100,000 page views. It was truly an integrated marketing campaign! We used various means of communications: the power of printed materials together with social media channels and an online platform. All this keeps Color Copy top of mind when it comes to unrivalled colour reproduction and sustainable paper production,” explained Johannes Klumpp Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, Europe and International.

The top 10 photos were chosen via public voting on the platform and a professional jury evaluated the finalists on a number of specific criteria, such as sharpness, contrast, perspective and colour brilliance. The jury was made up of the Klaus Ranger (professional photographer), Michael Seidl (Print & Publishing), David Gamage (Earth Island Publishing) as well as Susan Brunner, (Color Copy campaign manager), and Johannes Klumpp from Mondi. All photos were scored on the agreed criteria by each juror and then the results were tallied, with ‘The BOSS’ clearly taking first place.

Second prize, a Canon EOS 700D camera, was awarded to Renata Brlicová of the Czech Republic with her photo ‘Colors of Summer’. Third place went to a photo from Poland called ‘Paseika’ taken by Ewa Rogucka, who has won GoPro action camera Hero4. A special jury prize of a €150 gift certificate was also awarded to another photo from Belgium entitled ‘The painted lady’ as it had long been ranked among the top ten, clearly a favourite in the public voting, and it impressed the jury with its strong colour brilliance.

To view the final top 10 and the special jury prize winning photo, please go to the contest platform at www.colorcopy.mondigroup.com. More information about the Color Copy portfolio and local dealers is available at www.mondigroup.com/colorcopy.

walkilogoIn May 2015, we announced that Mondi Group had approached Walki Group, in order to acquire two of Walki’s extrusion coatings sites: Pietarsaari in Finland and Wroclaw in Poland. The deal was subject to competition clearance. The commission raised concerns about the impact on the competition environment, and a considerable time was spent on discussing ways to alleviate these.

However, a workable solution suitable for all parties was not found and therefore Mondi has decided to withdraw the application from the Commission and terminate the acquisition agreement.

The Industrial Packaging business, including the Pietarsaari and Wroclaw sites, will remain an integral part of Walki’s strategy. Walki is committed to develop all of its sites in Finland, Poland, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Russia and China.

In central and eastern Europe, it is sold exclusively through Mondi’s long-term distribution partner Europapier. PERGRAPHICA® complements Mondi’s offering at the high end of its professional print portfolio. It is called ‘Paper for Perfectionists’ because it fulfils the most demanding requirements for sophisticated and elegant printed documents. Graphic designers, advertising agencies and fine book publishers are just a few of the creative industries that will appreciate PERGRAPHICA’s variety of options: two textures (Rough and Smooth), three shades (High White, Classic and Natural) and six grammages between 90 and 300 g/m2.

Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director, Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, says, “We are delighted to work with Europapier as we launch PERGRAPHICA® in central and eastern Europe. We aimed for perfection in developing these design papers and believe the resulting portfolio offers unlimited creative possibilities.”

Innovative. Every Day.

Mondi left no stone unturned in developing PERGRAHPICA® as a premium design paper. To ensure optimal colour reproduction, Mondi worked with X-rite, the industrial leader in colour management systems, to develop specific PERGRAPHICA® ICC profiles and CxF files. The new portfolio already even meets the soon-to-be-introduced ISO print standard ISO 12647-2:2013M1.

As a hybrid paper, PERGRAPHICA® works well with all printing technologies. It delivers consistent, high-quality results whether used for offset or digital printing. It is also well-suited to a variety of post-print processing such as cellophaning, embossing, creasing, die-cutting and more. PERGRAPHICA® is available in standard folio formats 64x90 cm SG/LG, 72x102 cm SG/LG and other folio formats upon request.

Sustainable. Every Day.

PERGRAPHICA® is a Mondi Green Range product – one of many that support customers in going green. It is FSC® certified for responsible forestry, bears the EU’s Ecolabel and is produced exclusively in an ISO 14001-certified mill. It is also the only design paper brand included in the WWF’s ‘Check Your Paper’ resource for third-party audited, environmentally friendly pulp and paper products (checkyourpaper.panda.org).

Johannes Klumpp adds, “The story of PERGRAHICA® begins at the crossroads of design and creativity. With its look and feel PERGRAPHICA® reflects emotions that bring your story to life.”
