“As green as it gets”: Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper re-launches the Green Range to celebrate new achievements in sustainable paper making

greenrangelogo forestwaterMondi Uncoated Fine Paper (UFP) re-launched its Green Range with a new slogan that reflects the international paper manufacturer’s latest achievements and goals in sustainable paper making. Since 2006, the Green Range stands for Mondi-branded papers with a high environmental profile. It is also recognised as a channel to communicate Mondi’s efforts and initiatives in sustainable paper production and environmental issues central to the paper industry.

“Our new slogan, ‘As Green as it gets,’ references the expansion of the Green Range. All Mondi-branded papers now meet Green Range criteria and are FSC® or PEFC™ certified, or Totally Chlorine Free bleached (TCF), or 100% recycled. ‘As Green as it gets’ is also about Mondi’s unending drive and commitment to continually improve the eco-efficiency of our mills and papers,” explained Johannes Klumpp Marketing and Sales Director for Uncoated Fine Paper.

Responsible management of forests, reduced water and energy usage, fewer emissions to air and water, and less waste to landfill are essential elements in Mondi’s continuous journey towards sustainable development in paper production. To emphasize the eco-conscious production behind Mondi paper, the new campaign showcases tangrami paper landscapes inhabited by bees, birds and other animals, which instinctively gravitate toward the seemingly natural flora.

In addition to the key Green Range criteria, Mondi’s papers are accredited by many renowned international organizations. All UFP Image 2367Mondi-branded papers produced in the company’s UFP mills in Austria and Slovakia are EU Ecolabel certified, a label which signifies environmental excellence for products and services that meet high environmental standards throughout their life-cycle. Moreover, products such as 100% recycled NAUTILUS® classic and the BIO TOP 3® brand are certified with the Blue Angel and Austrian Environmental Label respectively.

To reduce Mondi’s effects on climate change the company’s principle is first to optimise processes, reduce emissions and then offset. The company is able to calculate the total carbon footprint of each product, at each stage of the supply chain, to determine the effect of its Greenhouse Gas-reducing activities at every stage. Carbon emissions from Mondi material operations were reduced by 26% since 2004 and 4.3 million CO2e tonnes were avoided as a result of carbon sequestration at its South African plantations and through the sale of green electricity, heat and fuels; using recovered paper; and substituting natural gas with biogas.

logo dns performanceOn a product level, Mondi UFP participates in the emissions reductions programme Run of River in order to offer customers 100% recycled NAUTILUS® SuperWhite and DNS® high-speed inkjet with a CO2 neutral option as well as the fully CO2 neutral Color Copy. The Run of River hydropower project results in an average annual CO2 reduction of approximately 230,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents.

To increase awareness about environmental issues related to the pulp and paper industry and the environmental labels found on Mondi papers, the company regularly hosts Green Events and developed an online learning tool called the Green Modules (www.mondigroup.com/greenmodules), which is now available in German, English and Italian.  For every person who reads the Green Modules, Mondi donates 1 euro to the NGO OroVerde’s reforestation project “Guatemala – Tree for Tree”. 1 euro equals 1 tree planted. If you answer the Green Module Quiz correctly, Mondi will donate 10 Euros to the project.

Minerals Technologies Inc., has announced  that it has signed a commercial agreement with Mondi S.A., a division  of the Mondi Group, to provide Fulfill(TM) E-325, a new, high-filler technology, at the paper company's Merebank paper mill in Durban, South Africa. This is the second commercial agreement with an affiliate of the Mondi Group; the first was with their paper mill at Ruzomberok, Slovakia, which was signed in July.

Unique High-Filler Technology Provides Significant Cost Savings in Reduced Fiber Consumption by Increasing PCC Filler Usage

Minerals Technologies now has 10 agreements with paper mills that have adopted the Fulfill(TM) E-325 technology that the company introduced in late 2010. These agreements confirm the commercial progress of the Fulfill(TM) brand, a portfolio of high-filler technologies that offers papermakers a variety of efficient, flexible solutions that decreases dependency on natural fiber and reduces costs. The Fulfill(TM) E-325 series allows papermakers to increase loading levels of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), which replaces higher cost pulp, and increases PCC usage without compromising product quality or performance.

"We are very pleased that this fine papermaker has adopted our new FulFill(TM) technology at another of its major papermaking facilities, which will allow them to produce quality paper at lower cost," said Joseph C. Muscari, chairman and chief executive officer of Minerals Technologies. "The 10 commercial agreements we now have with papermakers around the world reaffirms the revitalization of our new product pipeline and of our commitment to advance our technology leadership throughout our global satellite network."

The Mondi Group's key operations are located in central Europe, Russia and South Africa. The company employees 23,400 people across 28 countries worldwide. The Mondi Merebank Mill in Durban, South Africa, produces a range of office papers including the premium South African brand, Mondi Rotatrim. Minerals Technologies has operated a satellite at the Merebank mill since October 1997.

PCC is a specialty pigment for filling and coating high-quality paper. By substituting Minerals Technologies' PCC for more expensive wood fiber, customers are able to produce brighter, higher quality paper at lower cost. In 1986, Minerals Technologies originated the satellite concept for making and delivering PCC on-site at paper mills and the concept was a major factor in revolutionizing papermaking in North America. Today, the company has 56 satellite plants in operation or under construction around the world and continues to lead the industry with consistent quality and technical innovation.

Mondi, the global paper and packaging manufacturer, was one of 1,850 exhibitors at drupa 2012. Despite the decrease in attendance from drupa 2008 (drupa reported 315,500 visitors – a decrease of 75,000), Johannes Klumpp, Marketing and Sales Director for Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper, contends that drupa 2012 lacked none of the innovation and dynamism that is now synonymous with the printing and paper trade fair. “There were a lot of exciting new developments at this year’s drupa and a sense that the industry is gaining momentum in terms of new digital and hybrid printing technologies,” said Klumpp.

A Mondi highlight at drupa was the official signing of the HP Indigo Preferred Media Partner Cooperation Agreement for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). “We are very pleased that Mondi has become UFP Image_DNS_Indigo_2378part of HP Indigo’s Preferred Partner programme and we look forward to working more closely together to meet our mutual customer’s growing demand for high quality media needs.” said Edna Mannheim, Director Worldwide Supplies and Media.

She added, “Marketing collaborations, training activities for customers, and a focus on growth in the digital printing industry are key initiatives our companies will be driving forward.  Additionally, Mondi’s participation in Dscoop exhibits the type of leadership and participation we look for in media partners, and will enable their continued influence and support for HP Indigo customers.”

In addition to HP, Mondi sponsored 16 other OEMs and machine manufacturers with professional printing paper amounting to 100 tonnes. “Print technology is evolving quickly and we feel such collaborations are integral in fostering new market developments,” said Klumpp. “Landa’s Nanographic Printing™ presses were a major focus at drupa and we were very pleased that Landa used our NAUTILUS® SuperWhite on the B2 sheetfed Landa S7 Nanographic Printing Press.”

While providing an excellent opportunity to build upon existing relationships with leading OEMs, according to Johannes Klumpp, the lower attendance rates for drupa 2012 did not diminish sales opportunities. In fact, drupa’s recently published post-fair statistics suggest an increase in top management and decision makers at this year’s drupa. “We gained a high number of leads from across the globe and met a number of new contacts from India, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America,” said Klumpp.

btop3In a “Raceink” themed area at the Mondi booth, the company held hourly high-speed inkjet printing demonstrations on an Océ ColorStream 3500 high-speed inkjet system with a cutting line provided by Hunkeler. Particularly interesting for visitors looking for brand new high-speed inkjet printing papers, Mondi also previewed its 100% recycled NAUTILUS® high-speed inkjet and Totally Chlorine Free bleached (TCF) BIO TOP 3® high-speed inkjet – both papers scheduled for market launch early this summer.

Mondi’s professional printing portfolio foregrounds paper classifications (haptics, optics and environmental accreditations) and printing technology to facilitate easy navigation between brand characteristics and application suitability. The company’s steady product growth last year brought the launch of 3-star HP certified Color Copy indigo and DNS® indigo as well as DNS® high-speed inkjet and the hybrid printing papers DNS® performance and BIO TOP 3® next.

These latest innovations are part of Mondi’s ongoing developments to provide sustainably produced papers that meet the demands of the growing digital printing market. Moreover, as of 2012 all Mondi branded papers meet eco-conscious Green Range criteria and are FSC® or PEFC™ certified or 100% recycled or Totally Chlorine Free bleached (TCF).
