Sonoco (NYSE:SON), one of the largest diversified packaging companies, has awarded a bronze-level Sonoco Sustainability Star Award to its Sonoco Recycling facility in Savannah, Ga., for successful and exemplary efforts to reduce its waste to landfill and implement sustainability-oriented processes.

logo bluAdministered by Sonoco Recycling, the Sonoco Sustainability Star Awards program is comprised of three tiers. Gold awards recognize facilities that have achieved 99 percent landfill diversion; silver awards honor facilities achieving 95 percent landfill diversion; and bronze awards distinguish facilities that have made significant waste reduction achievements, such as drastically reducing their waste streams or implementing a new composting system.

Starting last summer, staff at the Sonoco Recycling facility in Savannah took a hard look at its business operations, in terms of both cost and sustainability. Working together, the team realized that by diverting dry waste material from their normal waste streams and taking it to a waste-to-energy service provider every month, they could save money and lessen their environmental impact. Now, only wet or bulky waste goes in the Dumpster, and all other waste is converted to energy via hauling trips that are often combined with normal hauling operations to optimize freight cost and lessen the facility’s carbon footprint.

“This process change is a first for a Sonoco Recycling location,” said Mike Pope, general manager and president, Sonoco Recycling. “The plant is doing a great job capturing a large amount of waste for recovery in waste-to-energy programming, and their improvements have positive implications for both sustainability and cost savings.”

A recycling leader with locations and expertise worldwide, Sonoco Recycling annually collects more than 3 million tons of old corrugated containers, various grades of paper, metals and plastics. In addition, the Company has experts who provide secure, reliable and innovative recycling solutions to residential and commercial customers. Currently, Sonoco Recycling operates four material recovery facilities (MRFs) serving more than 125 communities in which curbside-collected residential as well as commercial materials are processed. The Company also operates recycling programs, which identify waste reduction opportunities that reduce operating expenses for many of the largest consumer product companies in the United States.

logo bluSonoco (NYSE:SON), one of the largest global diversified packaging companies, has expanded its fiber certification program into Brazil and Mexico, as of mid-February 2016. Although most of the raw material used in our mills is 100 percent recycled fiber, this certification also requires that Sonoco select suppliers of virgin fiber and virgin fiber components that avoid trading or sourcing raw material that is: a) illegally harvested, b) harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights and c) harvested where global conservation priorities are threatened.

“Fiber certification is a demonstration of Sonoco’s commitment to recycling, healthy forests and responsible resource management,” said Laura Rowell, global sustainable packaging manager.

In Brazil, Sonoco’s paper mill in Londrina and rigid paper converting operation in Araras were both chain-of-custody certified to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC).  In Mexico, its Atizapan paper mill and Mexico City rigid paper converting operation were also chain-of-custody certified to the FSC and PEFC, plus the North American-based Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

These operations join the company’s 12 previously certified paper mills and four previously certified converting operations located in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

As the leader in high-quality, innovative, value-creating packaging solutions that “Satisfy the Customer,” Sonoco is prepared to help its global brand customers meet their sustainability goals related to deforestation and responsible sourcing. Product to be Demoed at Pack Expo 2015 in Las Vegas

Sonoco (NYSE:SON), one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, has expanded its line of FlatStack® paperboard tier sheets to include FlatStack® Ultralight™, a value-priced alternative to lightweight gypsum and paperboard sheets.

“The new Ultralight option offers our customers exceptional performance for a great price,” said Michael Krawson, account manager for sheets. “Plus, it comes straight from our paper mills, meaning we can assure consistency in quality and security of supply.”

With the introduction of Sonoco’s Ultralight grade, Sonoco now produces sheets in the caliper range of 10 to 50pt. Sonoco’s wide range in caliper offering, coupled with in-house design and testing capabilities, enables the Company to create custom solutions to meet customers’ unique manufacturing requirements (including integration with automated equipment), saving them time and money.

The Ultralight option supplements Sonoco’s original FlatStack® paperboard tier sheet. Made from 100 percent recycled fibers and completely recyclable, the original FlatStack paperboard sheets are a cost-effective solution that protects products on pallets during shipping, storage and retail display. Compared to typical corrugated tier sheets, FlatStack sheets offer a minimum 5 percent reduction in weight and generally garner a minimum of 15 percent cost savings across the supply chain. They also offer five times the amount of sheets per unit storage, and more than twice as many sheets shipped per truckload.

To learn more about FlatStack Ultralight and Sonoco’s original FlatStack tier sheets, visit www.sonoco.com/flatstack, or visit Booth S-5984 at the upcoming Pack Expo 2015 tradeshow in Las Vegas, Sept. 28-30.

Sonoco Achieves 5-Year Sustainability Targets

Substantially Lowers CO2, Water Usage While Improving Plant Waste Reduction, Establishes New 2020 Improvement Goals

sonoco logo 2014Sonoco (NYSE:SON), one of the largest diversified global packaging companies, has released its Corporate Responsibility Report for 2014-2015 and reported that it achieved its five-year global sustainability targets, including significant reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), water usage and development of landfill-free operations.

“Five years ago, we established goals to change our economic, environmental and social performance in aspects that were material to Sonoco and its stakeholders,” said Sonoco President and CEO Jack Sanders. “Our process of change, which is providing us better opportunities to grow through new products, new markets, new customers, new services and new ways of thinking, also has created an environment that allows us to better harness the power of our portfolio and our people to optimize our sustainability performance.  As a result, we made significant progress to not just meet, but exceed, our challenging sustainability goals.”

Targeted achievements highlighted in the Company’s Corporate Responsibility Report include:

  • Sonoco reduced normalized carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by nearly 24% over the past five years, with normalized emissions in 2014 dropping nearly 12% and direct emissions from Sonoco’s facilities reduced by 21%. Much of the emission reduction success was a result of the Company’s new biomass cogeneration system at its largest manufacturing complex in Hartsville, S.C., where CO2 emissions were reduced by 65% since 2009. The Company had set a goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 15% over the five-year period ending in 2014.
  • Normalized water usage decreased 40% over the past five years, due to Sonoco’s investment in a new water cooling and treatment system put in place at the Hartsville complex. Following the completion of the project, water consumption at the plant declined 35% in 2014 – equivalent to saving more than 10 million cubic meters of water.
  • Nearly 10% of the Company’s 336 global operating facilities achieved Sonoco Sustainability Star Awards by reaching landfill-free status of 95% waste diversion or higher. In addition, the Company’s Sonoco Recycling subsidiary implemented programs for 17 of its customers’ facilities to also reach landfill diversion goals.

In addition to reducing the Company’s impact on the environment, the Company reported continued improvement in employee safety, engagement and leadership development, including being ranked by AON Hewitt as one of the top 25 global companies for leaders six consecutive times.  Finally, the report provides a summary of the Company’s support of communities in which it operates, particularly through its support of education.

Using 2014 as the Company’s new baseline, Sonoco has made the following sustainability commitments through 2020:

  • Reducing normalized global energy usage by 1% annually, which should result in a further 1% reduction in GHG emissions (or reducing CO2 emissions by 5%).
  • Reduce normalized water usage by 5%.
  • Achieve landfill-free status at an additional 10% of the Company’s operations significantly diverting landfill wastes, while continuing to work with customers to also reduce their waste going to landfills.
  • Finally, continue to demonstrate improvement in employee safety, diversity and engagement.

1 Sonoco Location and 2 Partners Receive Gold Sonoco Sustainability Star Awards

sonoco logo 2014Sonoco (NYSE:SON), one of the largest diversified packaging companies, has granted its gold-level Sonoco Sustainability Star Award to three plants across the United States for their successful efforts to achieve landfill-free status.

The awards were granted to the following facilities:

  • American Packaging Corporation, Flexographic Printing and Laminating Division, Story City, Iowa
  • MillerCoors, Milwaukee, Wis.
  • Sonoco Global Plastics, Chatham, N.Y.

All three facilities achieved 99% landfill diversion.

American Packaging worked to achieve and maintain ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification, while also including employees across the organization in projects that increased efficiency, reduced waste, repurposed waste streams more effectively and lessened environmental impacts. The company has demonstrated a long commitment to sustainability, partnering with the Ames Resource Recovery Center for waste management since 1990.

MillerCoors eliminated 65 tons of waste that was previously sent to landfill each month from its Milwaukee brewery and corporate offices, logging its first landfill-free month at the brewery in December 2014. This marks the first MillerCoors campus to achieve complete landfill-free operations and the seventh of the company’s eight major breweries to reach this milestone.  The Milwaukee Brewery reduced waste by 19 percent over the past year. Residual waste that cannot be reused or recycled is sent to a waste-to-energy facility.

Sonoco Plastics’ Chatham location supplemented a longstanding waste-to-energy partnership with Covanta, with a long-term dedication to encourage recycling and reuse of waste materials via improved recycling programs and waste-oil capture programs. Proximity to the waste-to-energy facility, as well as a shipment system based on volume rather than a calendar schedule, help minimize the program’s carbon footprint.

Administered by Sonoco Recycling, the Company’s recycling business, the Sonoco Sustainability Star Awards program is comprised of three tiers:

  • Gold recognizes facilities that have achieved 99% landfill diversion;
  • Silver is awarded to facilities achieving 95% landfill diversion; and
  • Bronze recognizes facilities that have made significant waste reduction achievements, such as drastically reducing their waste streams or implementing a new composting system.

logo bluSonoco one of the largest diversified packaging companies, has named its Tulsa, Okla. Tubes and Cores plant a gold-level Sonoco Sustainability Star Award recipient for the plant's successful efforts to achieve landfill free status.

While recycling had been a plant priority for some time, its staff wanted to take it completely landfill free. In 2014, they identified an opportunity to divert non-recyclable coated tube scrap to a sourcing company and initiated a recovery program.

"In addition to recovering this coated tube scrap, which is difficult to manage, this program also reduced overall facility costs," said Lynn Ratliff, plant manager. "It was truly a win-win."

Sonoco one of the largest diversified packaging companies, has recognized U.S. Paper Mills Corp.'s facility in Menasha, Wis., with a Bronze Sustainability Star Award for the plant's successful efforts to achieve a 26 percent waste reduction.

logo bluThe plant achieved this significant waste reduction by recovering fiber from the waste streams in the pulping process and reducing moisture content in its waste stream by optimizing equipment. The fiber recovery component alone reduced waste by 50-60 tons per month.

"Our primary goal was to recover fiber from the waste streams in the pulping process, and it has paid off," said Troy Huebner, plant manager. "Overall, 58 percent of the plant's waste reduction is a direct result of material that is reconsumed back into processes, reducing the waste stream significantly. Our waste reduction strategy has streamlined operations, reduced waste and cut costs."
