Voith has launched two new forming fabrics, designed for manufacturing demanding board and packaging papers and also graphic grades. As the names of the MultiForm IR and MultiForm IC suggest, these forming fabrics are part of Voith’s I-Series. All products in this series are based on a unique SSB concept. The special feature of the fabrics in the I-Series is their warp ratio of 3:2.

2015 07 22 114319

The new forming fabrics were specifically developed for positions that put high demands on dimensional stability and dewatering performance. The unique warp principle of both MultiForm forming fabrics combines a fine paper side with an extremely stable machine side. This allows an increase in paper quality and a longer service life for the fabric. Further benefits are the good runnability of the fabrics at high speeds and their positive impact on resource consumption.

Voith’s I-Series has already been used to produce around 14 million metric tons of paper worldwide. The I-Series forming fabrics are being used in a wide range of applications from fine paper through to demanding packaging papers and are suitable for all kinds of former types.

voith logo 2013Voith filed a patent infringement suit in Italy before the First Instance Court in Rome against Toscotec S.p.A. In its complaint, Voith alleges that a Tissue Machine with shoe press technology type Ahead 2.0S. version Shoepress produced by Toscotec S.p.A. in Italy and delivered to a paper mill in Portugal infringes Voith’s European Patent No EP 0 926 296 in Italy. The Voith Patent EP´296 protects Voith´s shoe press technology NipcoFlex TTM in combination with suction turning roll for Tissue machines.

Toscotec reacted to Voith´s infringement law suit by requesting the nullification of the Voith EP´296 patent as well as filing a request for ascertainment of non-infringement. In this respect it has to be noted that the validity of Voith´s EP´296 patent has already been unsuccessfully challenged before the European Patent Office in a previous opposition filed by another competitor.

voith logo 2013Voith has successfully completed the modernization of the paper machine PM 6 at BillerudKorsnäs AB in Gruvön, Sweden. As part of the rebuild project, the press section and parts of the dryer section have been modernized. BillerudKorsnäs manufactures on the PM 6 fluting for packaging paper from virgin fibers.

In the press section the existing roll press was taken out of the second position and installed in the first press position. Now a new NipcoFlex shoe press is being used as the second press. The NipcoFlex package delivered to BillerudKorsnäs is the first one which can achieve lineloads of up to 1,700 kN/m. This is only possible through an optimal combination of roll, shoe, press sleeve and press felt, which were all developed by Voith. Through the extremely high press pulse maximum dewatering is achieved with the highest paper quality. The closed web run through the press reduces sheet breaks and increases the runnability of the paper machine. Dryness and speed of the paper machine are increased simultaneously. In addition, the cantilevering structure in the shoe press position of the new press allows the use of endless felts.

For the conditioning of the press felt a ProLub cleaning system has been installed for the first time in a paper machine for packaging papers. ProLub cleans continuously the felt across the entire working width. The dryer section has been reduced by two dryers, resulting in further energy savings.

Also part of the scope of supply were MultiFlex machine clothings in the press and dryer section and an OnQ ModuleSteam steam box that ensures a uniform CD moisture profile and a higher dryness.

BillerudKorsnäs AB, headquartered in Solna, Sweden, emerged in 2012 from the merger of Billerud and Korsnäs and is one of the leading manufacturers of packaging paper made from virgin fibers.

voith logo 2013The new PM 5 for light-weight packaging paper at Modern Karton went into operation on time in Corlu, Turkey, in the middle of 2015. The entire process technology – from the stock preparation to the winder, including automation – was delivered by Voith and is characterized by low fresh water and energy consumption.

Decisive for the choice of supplier were Voith's references in the field of light-weight packaging paper and good experience in working with Voith. Ahmet Eren, managing director of Modern Karton, confirmed: "The comprehensive technological experience of Voith and the sustainability concept of the system convinced us. With this project we can build on our position in the market."

PM 5 is designed for a production speed of 1,500 m/min and has a wire width of 8,180 mm. It produces around 400,000 metric tons of packaging paper annually with a basis weight of 70 to 160 g/m². "We offer paper manufacturers in this growing market segment convincing, attractive solutions. Our system concept is perfectly adapted to the requirements of this market and our customers benefit from resource- and cost-effective, high-quality machines," said Andreas Endters, member of the Voith Paper Board of Management.

The modern stock preparation system comprises two lines and is specially designed for the high percentage of rejects in Turkish waste paper. Also the consumption of resources of the paper machine is as low as currently possible thanks to the technology supplied by Voith. For example, due to the installation of the innovative FlowJec dosing system in the approach flow system of PM 5, it is possible to exactly coordinate the use of chemicals. In addition, the OnV EnergyProfiler software localizes and visualizes all the energy consumption during paper production. Added to this are the automation, rolls and first clothing for the machine as well as all additional services and auxiliary packages. Voith has conducted extensive training for new staff and provides additional technology support. Modern Karton itself has set up a power plant on the mill premises to utilize the residual materials from the production process and to generate energy.

The Turkish company Modern Karton is part of the Eren group and is one of the largest manufacturers of board and packaging paper in Europe. At its Corlu location, 120 km west of Istanbul, 630,000 tons of packaging paper were produced annually on two machines prior to the startup of PM 5, both for the domestic market as well as for the export market. With the new machine the production will reach 1.2 Mio tons, which represents approx. 50% of Turkey’s total production capacity. Modern Karton has now further expanded its leading position in the market of packaging paper producers in Turkey.

Steel cylinders for the dryer section

EvoDry a winner at WEIG-Karton

2015 07 09 091141

Compared with cast iron cylinders, steel cylinders offer impressive features like higher thermal conductivity and greater material strength. These and other benefits mean that it makes good sense to install steel cylinders when upgrading dryer sections. Recently, WEIG-Karton also opted to install EvoDry steel cylinders at its plant in Mayen, Germany.

2015 07 09 091230Because EvoDry steel cylinders for the dryer section have high material strength they can have a thinner wall thickness than comparable cast iron cylinders. The temperature distribution in EvoDry drying cylinders is very even, which ensures optimum paper quality. The head and shell of EvoDry cylinders are welded to one another, so that larger sheet widths can be passed over the drying cylinder. The high material strength and low wall thickness of the steel cylinder result in higher thermal conductivity, improving heat transfer by 7 – 10 %. Thanks to this high efficiency, production can be stepped up or investment cost minimized when using EvoDry, as fewer drying cylinders need to be installed.

On two machines in Mayen, WEIG-Karton produces recycling board for the folding boxboard industry and plasterboard for the plasterboard industry. Total annual production is 630,000 metric tons of board. In 2014 the company decided to rebuild the dryer section of its BM 6 plasterboard machine. Voith won the order to convert the dryer section and installed a total of 31 EvoDry steel cylinders. The board manufacturer opted in favor of steel cylinders to achieve the maximum possible drying efficiency. As well as supplying the cylinders, Voith was also responsible for assembly and commissioning.

The rebuild of the dryer section was a smooth and fast process. After just 19 days, WEIG-Karton could resume production of plasterboard on its BM 6. “We are absolutely delighted that the rebuild was accomplished so quickly and smoothly,” says Henning Dippel, Operations Manager BM 6, adding: “We are equally pleased about our decision to install the EvoDry steel cylinders. We have been able to save space and yet achieve better runability and energy efficiency than before.” Shortly after startup of the EvoDry steel cylinders the guaranteed CD moisture profile values have already been achieved.

EvoDry drying cylinders can be used for the production of all paper grades. Optimum results are achieved with paper grades that are dried at high temperature, for example board and packaging papers.

With the HydroSeal product, Voith has successfully participated in the Environmental Technology Award in Category 3 - Technologies for Emission Reduction, Treatment and Separation. The company came second.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy of Baden-Württemberg has been awarding the Environmental Technology Award since 2009. It is awarded every two years for excellent and innovative products in environmental technology. The prize money amounts to 100,000 euros and is spread over four categories ("Energy Efficiency", "Material Efficiency", "Technologies for Emission Reduction, Treatment and Separation" and "Measurement and Control Technology") and a special prize of the jury. Participation is open to companies with head offices or branches in Baden-Württemberg. The award recognizes products that make a significant contribution to resource efficiency and environmental protection and are nearing launch onto the market or that will be on the market in not more than two years. This year's awards ceremony by Environment Minister Franz Untersteller took place on 7 July 2015, in the Römerkastell (Roman Fort) in Stuttgart.

2015 07 09 090654

"We see our ranking as a special award for our commitment to the development of innovative environmental technology." The HydroSeal product is a new sealing strip system with integrated lubricating water supply for suction rolls in a paper machine. TheWall is a new disperser filling from Voith that was developed to ensure an improved fiber treatment during a long service life. The design of TheWall is innovative and unique. It is made of an especially strong material and used by tissue, newsprint and magazine paper manufacturers as well as board and packaging paper producers. It can be integrated into all current Voith dispersers and in selected dispersers of other manufacturers.

VP TheWall 14

TheWall features three impressive innovations. Firstly, on the inner circle, the rotor vanes of TheWall ensure that the stock can be feeded uniformly to the distributing teeth. The new design also has a continuous functional barrier between the individual working edges of the filling. This prevents the stock from passing by untreated (short circuit flow) and gives the fine rows of teeth more stability. Another new feature is that the operating gap is adjustable in a wide range without impairing the efficiency of the disperser. Thus the energy input can be kept constant over the entire service life of the filling. At the same time, TheWall uses less energy than conventional disperser fillings while offering the same technological results.

Around 25 test installations are now successfully operating in various paper mills, with several customers ordering TheWall even before completion of the test phase. They will use them as their standard equipment.
