In recent months, successful start-ups have already been realized with XcelLine paper machines, for example with the installation of two packaging paper machines, Zoucheng PM31 and PM32, for Sun Paper. Just a few hours after start-up the PM31 was producing several hundred tons of marketable paper. Since then it has been running smoothly and stably at a high production level. One month later the PM32 was also successfully commissioned.

One example of a successful XcelLine tissue machine is the Cheng Loong TM16 in Taiwan. It is particularly energy-efficient, as the Yankee dryer hood is heated with steam instead of gas, while the combination with the NipcoFlex T shoe press reduces running costs. With an operating speed of 2,001 m/min the TM 16 is regarded as the world's fastest tissue machine with steam-heated Yankee dryer hood.

The PM 2 of Parenco in Renkum, Netherlands, was successfully started up just 14 months after contract signing. After a short optimization phase the customer signed the official take-over document. This rebuild increases the mill's capacity by approximately 385,000 metric tons annually.

voith logo 2013“We are very pleased that the take- over has been signed. In the next months, we will proof that Parenco has arrived as a new supplier in the packaging paper industry” says Geert Wassens, CEO of Parenco. The conversion from newsprint to packaging paper grades will help to position Parenco as a highly competitive supplier in the packaging paper market, and broadens its paper making activities. Since 2012, Parenco is an independent company under the ownership of H2. Beside the converted PM 2, Parenco operates also the PM 1 in Renkum, which produces magazine paper (SCB) for the European market.

Just after start-up the rebuilt PM 2 already proved that the produced paper quality reaches the market demands on all points.

With a wire width of 8.4 m the paper machine was equipped with a new two-layer MasterJet Pro M2 headbox, a DuoFormer D II, a DuoCentri NipcoFlex press, a SpeedFlow sizing unit and a new CombiDuoRun after dryer section. The PM 2 produces Testliner and Fluting in a basis weight range of 70-160 g/m².

Voith did not only rebuild the paper machine itself: Within the Process Line Package scope, Voith as general contractor also adjusted and rebuilt all adjacent processes and utilities. This also included a new OCC stock preparation and the Wet End Process. Based on the results of a pre-engineering, the scope of supply also covered all necessary adaptions on the steam, water and power supply as well as civil works.

Sun Paper, one of the leading paper makers in China, recently successfully started up its new testliner paper machines with an annual capacity of 800,000 metric tons at its location in Zoucheng. The main paper machine, the right-hand machine PM31 and the left-hand machine PM32 are both provided by Voith. The PM31 has successfully started up, marking a milestone in China’s papermaking sector, as it is the first time that two different packaging paper machines have ever been installed in a common production hall.

2016 08 16 164923

With support from Voith, the project enables Sun Paper to achieve high production efficiency, significant cost savings and efficient fiber utilization along the manufacturing process.

With a production width of 6,660 mm and an operating speed of 1,200 m/min, the PM31 produces testliner in the basis weight range of 110 to 250 g/m2. It adopts the cutting edge technology of the three layer MasterJet headbox, the Tandem NipcoFlex shoe press and the SpeedSizer as well as the hard nip calender. The installation of the PM31 started in October 2015 and it became operational on July 10, 2016, an impressive achievement in the domestic papermaking industry.

With a relentless effort and close cooperation of the special taskforces from Voith and Sun Paper, the PM31 achieved paper on reel earlier than Sun Paper had anticipated. In addition, it took only 12 hours from stock on wire to paper on reel. And it only took one day to produce saleable paper. Moreover, the PM31 is running quite smoothly and stable after startup.

PeakElement, the elastomer component developed by Voith and available for all Voith press felt designs, improves the efficiency of machines for all paper grades. The new material reduces startup time and energy consumption.

  • Shorter startup time
  • Energy savings
  • Improved machine efficiency

The elastomer component is integrated into the felt structure and ensures that the felt achieves the optimum saturation in the nip as quickly as possible. This is necessary to obtain the ideal hydraulic pressure in the press nip and enable appropriate dewatering. As press felts with PeakElement technology compress up to 15 % more than standard felts, the functional saturation is achieved within a much shorter period. As a result, the startup time for the paper machine is noticeably reduced and the actual production speed is reached sooner.

2016 07 08 072743

The rebound capacity of the press felt is also crucial for performance over the entire service life. The elastomer component prevents a lasting deformation of the material – even after over two million revolutions. This means that the flow of water is guaranteed and the machine efficiency is continuously maintained.

PeakElement technology has already proven effective in numerous paper machines producing all grades of paper. Along with the shorter startup times and lower energy consumption, paper manufacturers have also opted to switch to PeakElement technology because of the higher production volume it offers.
