Cepi, the European association representing the paper industry, has announced a new alliance called 4evergreen. The aim of the alliance is to boost the contribution of fibre-based packaging in a circular and sustainable economy that minimises climate and environmental impact.

The alliance will increase awareness about the benefits of fibre-based packaging materials, advocate for EU legislation supporting product design for recyclability and call for the development of optimised collection systems and appropriate recycling infrastructures.

sappi logoThe rise of environmental awareness and consumer concerns, as well as the increase of packaging focused regulation, such as the Single Use Plastics Directive, have helped companies to accelerate the development of alternative packaging materials including fibre-based packaging with a view to helping consumers make more climate-friendly choices.

4evergreen was created as a forum to engage and connect industry members from across the fibre-based packaging value chain, from paper and board producers to packaging converters, brand-owners and retailers, technology and material suppliers, waste sorters and collectors.

The 4evergreen alliance is important because it was born from an initiative of consumer product industry leaders who recognize the huge potential of fibre-based packaging in a circular economy” said Susanne Oste, VP Innovation and Sustainability at Sappi.  “Their customers want sustainable packaging and fibre-based products provide the most climate-friendly solution available.

Sappi is proud to play a part in this industry alliance.  We have been investing heavily for more than 10 years in cutting edge research into real solutions for the problems that confront our customers.  A recent success is the launch of the only fully recyclable confectionary  wrapper on the market today.”

Valmet will deliver key technology for upgrading the SCA Obbola mill’s pulp production in Sweden. Valmet’s delivery includes a new fossil free lime kiln and upgrade of the existing fiberline. The pulp production upgrades will happen in stages. The upgraded fiberline will start up in June 2021 and the new lime kiln is scheduled to start up during the last quarter of 2021.

The order is included in Valmet’s orders received of the fourth quarter 2019. The value of the order will not be disclosed. A project of this size and scope is typically valued at around EUR 50 million.

Valmet’s delivery is part of SCA’s major investment to increase the annual production of kraftliner in Obbola mill from the current 450,000 tonnes to 725,000 tonnes per year. The total investment amounts to SEK 7.5 billion (about EUR 700 million) over a five-year period.

“With the investment in Obbola mill, we can meet the increased demand for sustainable packaging. We selected Valmet to deliver new technology for our pulp mill upgrade as we have had good experiences of Valmet technology at both our Obbola mill and other SCA mills,” tells Per Stand, Project Director from SCA.

“This order strengthens our cooperation with SCA. Delivering fossil fuel free lime kiln solution is very much aligned with the strategies of both our companies. SCA valued our technical leadership in lime kilns as well as robust and reliable solutions both for the lime kiln and fiberline,” says Bertel Karlstedt, Pulp and Energy Business Line President, Valmet

Technical details about Valmet’s delivery

The new lime kiln system delivered by Valmet replaces two old oil fueled lime kilns and will have a daily capacity of 220 tonnes burned lime. The solution includes OptiDisc Lime Mud Filter, Flash Dryer for lime mud drying, high efficiency Rotary Cooler and a full Wood Powder Firing System for the lime kiln, including storage and grinding of wood pellets. This solution makes the lime kiln 100 percent fossil free. SCA also operates a wood powder fired lime kiln delivered by Valmet at its Munksund mill.

The fiberline upgrade includes a new hot stock refining after the digester using Conflo refiners. The brown stock washing will be improved by adding a new TwinRoll press as last washing stage before the storage towers for the paper machine. As a result of the fiber line upgrade the daily capacity will increase from today’s 850 air dry tons to 1,100 air dry tons. The capacity increase is done with improved washing with the same water consumption.

Climate change is a global crisis that demands urgent action and requires every actor in society to play his/her part in responding to the crisis. Industries have both a duty and an opportunity to become more sustainable, more efficient and more innovative.

“With the help of the new European Green Deal, we can reduce our impact on climate change while increasing production in Europe. Our industry has a strategic interest in being at the forefront of the decarbonisation efforts for 2050” said Ignazio Capuano, incoming Cepi Chairman and CEO of Burgo group taking over from Karl-Henrik Sundström, CEO of Stora Enso, during Cepi’s annual conference, Paper and Beyond, today in Brussels.

2018 10 18 102805In this spirit, the CEOs representing the European paper industry outlined their plans to reach a climate-neutral Europe by 2050 in a declaration which was officially handed over to Clara De La Torre, Deputy Director-General of DG CLIMA and Timo Pesonen, Director-General of DG GROW, present along with other European Commission representatives.

The way forward finds its foundations in the very solid basis of our existing achievements. We have guaranteed the sustainability of our raw materials, improved the performance of our processes and proven the climate friendliness of our products.

Sustainable raw materials: our raw material is wood pulp, which is intrinsically renewable if coming from properly managed forest sources; this is why we have helped create a number of programmes for the certified sustainability of forests across Europe such as PEFC (Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). We have expanded sustainable forest management practices in Europe and globally.

Decarbonised processes: we have delivered a successful decarbonisation of our operations of 27% from 2005 to date. Our sector is investing at a rate of more than €5 billion per year to decarbonise, with a commitment to making our production processes more efficient and decreasing our overall carbon footprint thanks to new technologies and collaboration with our partners. A step change is ultimately needed and supported by breakthrough technologies and solutions. We are committed to searching for them.

Climate-friendly products: world champions in recycling, we have worked with local authorities to improve separate collection of paper and board to boost the use of recycled fibres in new products. We now plan to push our model even further in a final goal of providing innovative sustainable solutions for a range of new sectors, for example textile, through new bio-based products.

To turn this ambition into reality, we call upon European policymakers to support our efforts by setting an appropriate legislative framework, namely:

  • Improved market access for recyclable and bio-based products, through a coherent product policy and clear framework conditions for the new bioeconomy-related products
  • More support for the sustainable management of forests and recycling schemes: forest-based raw materials should be made more easily available and accessible.
  • A coherent, stable and predictable regulatory framework, with clear milestones for a cost-competitive energy transition, to promote and reward decarbonisation investments and guarantee access to clean energy.

Our final goal is to empower consumers, who will get a larger choice of climate-friendly products that are easily available and affordable.

Stora Enso’s Sustainability Report 2018 was chosen as the best in Finland in a competition organised by an independent group of expert organisations.

Stora Enso’s Sustainability Report won Finland’s best sustainability report of the year award. The report was particularly recognised for strong external assurance and describing risks and opportunities. The report was, amongst other things, also praised for the description of the Group’s strategy contributing to a low carbon future.

stora new1“We are proud that our efforts in transparent reporting have been acknowledged. Our report reflects our sustained focus on topics that ensure a positive contribution to society and address our long-term opportunities and challenges,” says Noel Morrin, EVP Sustainability at Stora Enso.

“A good report must be highly informative and coherent, but also easy to use and continuously developed. As a sustainability driven company, we value this recognition highly,” says Ulrika Lilja, EVP Communications at Stora Enso.

The Stora Enso Annual Report 2018 consists of Strategy, Financials, Sustainability, and Governance. All parts of the Annual Report are available at storaenso.com/annualreport.

The annual sustainability report review has been organised since 1996. This year it was carried out in co-operation with Aalto University, Climate Leadership Coalition, Finland's Sustainable Investment Forum (Finsif), Hanken, Nasdaq, The Finnish Association of Auditors, The Association for Environmental Management, the Ministry of the Environment, and the corporate responsibility network FIBS. This year, a total of 47 sustainability reports from different organisations were evaluated.

Part of the bioeconomy, Stora Enso is a leading global provider of renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wooden constructions and paper. Papierfabrik August Koehler SE has engaged Voith to comprehensively modernize the PM 5 paper machine at its main paper mill in Oberkirch. This vote of confidence in Voith is further evidence of the long-standing successful business relationship between the two companies.

  • SpeedSizer AT improves competitiveness and increases flexibility
  • Fewer downtimes and web breaks
  • Contactless high-performance qDryPro Compact dryer increases efficiency
  • Upgrade to pave the way for future speed increase and second expansion phase

Voith worked with Koehler to develop a customized concept for the PM 5 that improves competitiveness and increases flexibility. Downtimes and web breaks will be reduced and efficiency increased. The upgrade with high-tech components will allow paper coated on both sides to be produced in a larger operating window in future. The paper machine is also being prepared for a speed increase in a possible second expansion phase.

To achieve these ambitious project goals and improve the customer’s competitiveness, Voith’s upgrade incorporates the applicator unit SpeedSizer AT, which is ideal for fast running paper machines, the energy efficient, contactless high-performance dryer qDryPro Compact, and the PrevoSystem for short and reliable threading. For the pulpers in the press and reeling section, new pulping units are to be installed for even more effective pulping of the broke.

Voith PM 5 August Koehler SE Oberkirch, Germany.Voith PM 5 August Koehler SE Oberkirch, Germany.

“The main reasons for upgrading our PM 5 are to increase efficiency, improve flexibility to allow a wider range of paper grades, and reduce costs.”, says Hartmut Felsch, Mill and Division Director Oberkirch at August Koehler SE.

SpeedSizer AT: Optimum film application at all times
SpeedSizer AT enables uniform, flawless application of sizing and coating films and improves paper qualities, penetration and surface coverage. The carbon fiber support beam is dimensionally stable regardless of external temperature fluctuations. It maintains maximum straightness and allows uniform film application over the entire operating period. The doctor rod holder used will be the patented modular system SpeedRod M, in which doctor rod, doctor bed, pressure hose and clamp hose are integrated in one component. Any type and diameter of doctor rod can be selected without necessitating laborious machine adjustments. Because individual components can be replaced, malfunctions can be fixed quickly and easily, downtimes reduced and production losses minimized. The SpeedSizer AT has already proven effective in more than 300 customer installations.

qDryPro Compact: Energy efficient, contactless high-performance drying
The qDryPro Compact is a high-performance dryer for paper and board grades with single or double-sided coating. There is usually very little space available for paper machine upgrades. This is why the air system of the qDryPro Compact was designed to be especially space-saving. The air circulation fan is integrated into the dryer. The combination of infrared and hot air drying is extremely energy efficient, because it uses only the waste heat from the infrared heaters to heat the air hood.

PrevoSystem: Reliable and short threading processes
Voith’s scope of supply also features the Prevo threading and cutting system including the PrevoThread C vacuum threading belt and a PrevoCut DTC double tail cutter. Because an inefficient threading process can stop production for up to an hour for every web break and restart, Voith developed the fully automated PrevoSystem, which ensures reliable threading processes and short threading times. It reduces production losses after every web break and increases productivity. 1,000 Prevo solutions installed worldwide testify to its benefits.

Intelligent Pulp Solution by Stora Enso

Unlock the hidden value – achieve full traceability across the pulp supply chain.

Stora Enso produces yearly over 9 million tons of pulp in different grades and more than 2 million tons of that is sold globally. Based on our long history in the pulp business, we see a lot of hidden value in the pulp value chain. The lack of visibility and unit level traceability inhibits companies to realize the full value of the pulp.

With Stora Enso’ s complete solution for the pulp industry, our clients can achieve full traceability across the value chain, unlocking value for producers, transporters, warehouse operators and consumers.

We offer a turn-key solution with everything from RFID tags and reading equipment to software and services. Read more about our solutions to see what they can do for your business.

Turn-Key solution by Stora Enso

Pulp Solution overview

Our solution starts and ends with our unique pulp industry-specific tag, ECO Bale. ECO Bale is a paper-based, repulpable, and fully water-soluble RFID tag with superior performance in the pulp supply chain.

ECO Bale is designed and optimized for tagging pulp bales and complies with the special requirements of the pulping process. Applied to the pulp bale, ECO Bale enables end-to-end traceability until the tagged bale enters the papermaking process and dissolves.

To efficiently apply ECO Bale to the pulp bale, we have developed the Stora Enso Pulp Industry Hammer System, consisting of the Hammer Central Unit, an off-the-shelf industrial-grade label applicator and RFID accessories. The Hammer system has been designed and built to maximize system uptime. All selected components are suitable for industrial environments with no compromises.

The Hammer System, in operation, will do (1) quality control of the tag (2) automated removal of under-performing tags (3) tag encoding (4) encoding data transmission to the selected database (5) tag encoding verification by integrated RFID reader and (6) tag application to the bale unit.

2019 11 22 111345

To read the RFID tagged Bale units at different points in the pulp value chain, Stora Enso offers pre-designed and tested Sonar reading systems for clamp trucks, gate reading points and much more. At every reading point, the data is captured by our Bridge Middleware for use in production and supply chain applications. The captured data may be fed via the Bridge Edge Server to our customers’ systems and/or to the Bridge Cloud.

Stora Enso provides tailored and secure Bridge Cloud portals for monitoring and tracking the pulp supply chain from manufacturers to consumers.

For all hardware and software components of the solution, we offer installation, integration and maintenance services, ensuring an industry-grade, turn-key solution for our customers.
