SealView technology captures the development of wear on every single seal strip and can be used with conventional and Voith HydroSeal seal strip designs. Its functional principle is based on a non-electric solution, which ensures maximum reliability in the adverse suction roll environment.

Seal strips in suction rolls delimit the individual vacuum zones and are subjected to constant wear as they are pressed against the rotating suction roll shell. At the moment, it is not possible to determine the current state of wear after its final assembly or while the roll is in operation. The right time for a roll change has therefore generally been determined based on empirical values. When operating parameters change, for example due to a failure of individual lubrication nozzles, an unexpected vacuum failure might occur which negatively influences the planned runtime of the roll.

With SealView, this risk is now a thing of the past. The new technology can be built into the suction roll – independently of roll design and brand – during a roll service at one of Voith’s service centers. After changing the rolls, Voith personnel will do the initial commissioning and training at the paper machine.

No unscheduled machine downtimes and sufficient time to plan replacement part procurement
The system alerts the operator when the seal strip has reached half of its service life. When it gets to a safety margin before the maximum wear level, an alarm is triggered. Via a visual representation on a monitor, the system informs the operator about the actual wear condition and the probable remaining service life of the seal strip, alerting the operator in good time to the necessity for a roll change. Moreover, the associated notifications are sent by email and are therefore available to personnel on their smartphones.

After receiving this information, the operator has sufficient time to systematically plan the disassembly of the roll and coordinate further action for a roll service and the procurement of replacement parts with the Voith service department. “A further advantage of the new SealView technology is that it is no longer necessary to keep an expensive set of seal strips inventory in the warehouse for emergencies. This helps customers to reduce working capital, a topic which plays a more and more important role in our industry,” explains Jochen Honold, Global Product Manager Mechanical Roll Service, Voith Paper.

Longer suction roll service life and maximum reliability
The system reveals its full potential, particularly in the case of runtime extensions over and beyond the usual lifetime. Because the seal strip wear is displayed, the operator can rely on the system over extended periods of use without worrying about an unscheduled downtime.

Voith has decades of experience in the maintenance of rolls in general and suction rolls in particular. Based on the information currently available, particularly important components need to actively communicate with the operating and maintenance system to achieve maximum reliability. Employee volunteers from Domtar’s Bennettsville paper mill and Tatum converting facility helped transform the Community Kitchen of Bennettsville with construction and installation of new picnic tables, benches, shade sails and storage bins.

Domtar Logo 0 0Domtar Corporation has just announced that it joined forces with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) in a conservation project to revitalize the Community Kitchen of Bennettsville. More than 80 employees from our Bennettsville, S.C. paper mill and Tatum, S.C. converting facility transformed the Community Kitchen’s courtyard through construction and installation of new picnic tables, porch swings, benches, shade sails and storage bins. The volunteers also created planters with native flowers and bushes, installed solar lighting, as well as sleeping benches and mats for the homeless. Domtar makes a wide variety of everyday products from sustainable wood fiber, and it is one of the world’s largest producers of uncoated freesheet paper, as well as an innovator in absorbent technology. The company’s Bennettsville paper mill employs 348 people and the Tatum converting facility employs 33 people in the community.

Pulpmills in Brazil had some of the lowest wood fiber costs in the world in the 2Q/19, according to the WRQ. Over the past three years Eucalyptus pulplog prices have fallen while the global Hardwood Fiber Price Index (HFPI) has trended upward to reach its highest level in four years.

Lower operating rates at the major pulp mills in Brazil and healthy inventory levels of wood fiber took pressure off prices of Eucalyptus pulplogs in the 2Q/19. Eucalyptus pulplog prices have been on a roller-coaster ride ever since the Wood Resource Quarterly began tracking wood fiber prices in Brazil in 1988, mostly due to fluctuations in the exchange rates and changes in the fiber demand/supply balance.

Following a 15-year period from 1988 to 2003 when prices fluctuated between US$20-50/odmt, prices took off and trended upward for almost eight years to reach an all-time- high in the 3Q/11. From 2011 to 2015, prices fell substantially to reach an 11-year low in the 4Q/15, which was followed by a period with slightly higher prices. In the 2Q/19, the average price reached its lowest level in over three years as the value of the US dollar strengthened.

It is interesting to compare the price developments for Eucalyptus in US dollar and Brazilian Real terms, as the exchange rate between the two currencies has fluctuated quite substantially over the years. Pulplog prices in Brazilian Real terms have generally trended upward over the past 15 years and reached a 25-year high in early 2019 when the average price was 50% higher than in 2005 (see chart). During the same period, prices in US dollar terms doubled before taking a plunge to 2005 levels. Pulpmills in Brazil now have some of the lowest wood fiber costs in the world.

For the past eight years, the Eucalyptus pulplog prices in Brazil have consistently been lower than the global Hardwood Fiber Price Index (HFPI), a weighted average of delivered wood fiber prices for 15 key hardwood pulp-producing regions of the world. The discrepancy between the average Brazilian pulplog prices and the HFPI actually reached a 15-year record in the 2Q/19 when Brazil’s price fell to 70% of the HFPI price index. Wood fiber costs as a percentage of market pulp prices have been at record lows over the past year, leading to healthy profit margins for the industry.

At the end of May 2019, international technology Group ANDRITZ started up the PM3 paper machine for speciality papers supplied to Zellstoff Pöls AG (part of the Heinzel Group), Austria, for the production of bleached kraft paper grades. This start-up took place two weeks before the date scheduled.

The ANDRITZ PrimeLine MG plant produces environmentally friendly MG paper for flexible packaging and release applications at the Pöls location.

With an annual capacity of 100,000 t, a design speed of 1,400 m/min. and a working width of 5.4 m, PM3 is setting a new benchmark in the production of these paper grades. The unique machine design enables the production of grades with low basis weight and highest strength with good printability and smoothness levels.

In terms of production and final product quality, PM3 exceeded all expectations right away in the first four weeks after start-up. The design capacity was achieved in stable operation within three months, and the majority of paper grades with basis weights between 22 and 52 g/m² were produced successfully.

The heart of the PrimeLine MG paper machine is the PrimeDry MG Steel Yankee, which is the largest of its kind worldwide with a diameter of 24 feet (7.315 m). ANDRITZ is thus breaking its own world record for size, established in 2013 when PM2 was started up successfully in Pöls with a 22-foot Yankee.

ANDRITZ supplied all process technologies, including the stock preparation line and approach flow system. One of the key components is the new ANDRITZ Vertical Screw Thickener (VST), which dewaters the pulp efficiently from a consistency at inlet of 3% to between 25 and 30% at the outlet.

Jürgen Rieger, Production Manager at Zellstoff Pöls AG, confirms, “We were very impressed with start-up and the first few months in operation that followed, just as we were with start-up of PM2 by ANDRITZ in 2013. Commencing operations ahead of schedule with a plant of this complexity is really exceptional.” Siegfried Gruber, overall Project Manager for PM3 adds: “Collaboration with the team from ANDRITZ was excellent, and this was also reflected in the outstanding PM3 start-up curve.”

Besides full responsibility for the technology, the ANDRITZ scope of supply also included the automation equipment, all process pumps, an extensive range of services, and the entire basic and detail engineering.

The Eldorado Brasil pulp mill in Três Lagoas, Brazil, set an outstanding production record of 5,576 ADmt/d on September 21, 2019, with ANDRITZ technologies. In addition, production has been running for the past 200 consecutive days without a sheet break on the MS2 line.

The mill was started up successfully at the end of 2012 and has achieved several production records since then. GAW technologies GmbH in Graz / Austria was commissioned by Papierfabrik Palm with the supply of a chemical preparation and supply system for the new paper mill in Aalen / Germany.

The new paper machine PM5 will double the capacity of the plant and replace three existing paper machines. It will produce lightweight and high-quality fluting and testliner grades from recycled fiber. The plant will be commissioned in 2021 and will have an annual capacity of 750,000 tons.

The GAW scope of delivery includes systems for powder unloading, powder storage in a silo tank farm and the dosing of various liquid chemicals. Three core areas of the paper mill are operated separately: sewage treatment plant, stock preparation and the paper production itself. The order value was not disclosed. The overall PM5 project is quite extensive and Palm is investing a total of 500 million euros at the location.

The centerpiece of PM 1 in Ust-Ilimsk is a XcelLine of the latest generation. With a wire width of 10,300 millimeters, the Ilim Group plans to produce up to 2,150 tons of kraftliner per day with basis weights between 80 and 175 grams per square meter. This will make the new machine the most powerful of its kind in the world. The production speed of 1,200 meters per minute also represents a top performance.

OnCare.Health and OnCare.Asset as well as OnEfficiency.Strength are among Voith’s Papermaking 4.0 digitalization technologies that ensure consistently high product quality and reliably efficient manufacturing. In Ust-Ilimsk, OnCare.Health monitors the current status of the system at all times, registers even the smallest malfunctions and their causes, alerts the papermaker and independently works out optimization measures. In combination with the intelligent maintenance management system OnCare.Asset, this enables a significant increase in machine availability.

In addition to the record-breaking XcelLine machine, two BlueLine stock preparation systems are also included – one for hardwood pulp, the other for softwood pulp. They ensure exact compliance with the composition of the pulp. Voith's technology thus sets the course for maximum product quality right from the start of the process.

The preassembled equipment will be erected directly at the construction site in Ust-Ilimsk. In addition to the XcelLine and the BlueLine, components supplied by Voith will include a FlowJec dosing system for additives, the former section with two Fourdrinier machines equipped with MasterJet Pro F, a ModuleJet II and DuoShake, EcoCal hard calender, the drying section with CombiDuoRun dryers and a Sirius reel with EcoChange and VariFlex Performance winder. The delivery of the 79-ton Nipco-P roll represents a particular challenge for the project.
