Wet and mild weather in the fall and early winter has led to a shortage of pulpwood in late 2017 and early 2018.

billkorlogoThe root cause of the shortage of pulp wood is the unusually wet and mild start of the winter. Normal winters the ground freezes which allows for efficient forestry. At present, forestry machines cannot be used in the forests in certain areas. In addition, the possibility of driving on the forest road network is limited in some areas, which also reduces the flow of wood. The situation is the same in the Nordic countries, western Russia and the three Baltic states.

BillerudKorsnäs has taken measures to minimize the effects of the lack of pulpwood and follows the situation on a daily basis. The measures taken are mainly mix changes in production and redistribution of flows to optimize the use of wood.

"We have the opportunity to change the product mix in our production to optimize wood usage. This is something we look over every day but what we now do from the perspective of economizing wood, especially short fiber. To the plant in Gävle we have also imported eucalyptus chips from South America, something that has been evaluated to be used in this type of situations that historically happens every 5-10 years, "says Uno Brinnen, Senior Vice President Forestry, BillerudKorsnäs.

The financial impact on Q4 2017 results is minor and it is difficult to assess the extent of the lack of pulpwood and how long the situation will last but given current assessments the estimated negative impact on earnings in Q1 2018 is approximately SEK 80-100 million.

Valmet has introduced a predictive tool for detecting recovery boiler leaks - Valmet Recovery Boiler Leak Detector. This innovative diagnostics application with advanced analytics enables boiler owners to detect even the smallest tube leaks in an unprecedented way, resulting in significantly improved boiler safety and reduced damage risks.

valmet logoTypically, distributed control systems (DCS) have only relatively primitive tools for recovery boiler leak detection. These include simple differentials between the feedwater and the steam, or alarms for low drum level and high furnace pressure that are activated only in the case of very large and sudden leaks. With these traditional tools, it is virtually impossible to notice a minor leak in the boiler furnace. A small undetected leak may grow, rupture a tube and lead to severe damages or even to a major smelt-water explosion.

"Valmet Recovery Boiler Leak Detector now takes leak detection a major step forward by combining advanced mass and chemical balance calculations. This makes it an invaluable diagnostics tool for detecting leaks at their early stages," says Timo Laurila, Business Manager, Recovery Analyzers and Advanced Process Controls, Valmet.

Currently, the leak detection solution is used by several pulp mills, and the results gained with it have been very positive.

Technical information about Valmet Recovery Boiler Leak Detector

Valmet Recovery Boiler Leak Detector typically recognizes a 0.25-0.50% difference between the feedwater and the steam in the feedwater flow. Additionally, the application features an advanced chemical balance calculation, which enables higher accuracy and identification of critical leaks and separation from non-critical leaks. The balance is typically calculated using phosphate as a tracer.

Alarm levels can be set low enough so that a leak can be diagnosed before a tube is ruptured. As boiler load swings are taken into account, there are no unnecessary alarms due to changes in load.

Leak rate monitoring and alarms can be tested safely during normal operation by using a blowout line for leak simulation. Operator instructions and training for boiler leak detection and management are included in the delivery scope.

Valmet Recovery Boiler Leak Detector is part of the Valmet Recovery Boiler Optimizer product portfolio and can be implemented on any DCS.

Responding to today’s report (Friday 5 January 2018) from the Environmental Audit Committee following its ‘Disposable Packaging: Coffee Cups and Plastic Bottles’ inquiry, the Paper Cup Alliance (PCA) has welcomed the recognition of industry efforts to increase recycling but cautioned against measures that hurt consumers and harm the high street economy.

Speaking on behalf of the PCA, Mike Turner said:

“Paper cups are the most sustainable and safe solution for drinks on-the-go. Consumers want to do the right thing and we’re taking steps to support that through new infrastructure and country-wide initiatives.

270 DCEE0016“The paper cups we manufacture in the UK are sustainably sourced, responsibly produced, recyclable and, through a number of facilities, are being recycled. We are committed to increasing recycling rates. Over 4,000 new recycling points were created in 2017 and a new country-wide initiative is launching during January increasing options for consumers to recycle. Taxing the morning coffee run will not address the issue of litter but it will hurt consumers and impact already struggling high streets. No packaging type is totally recycled and a ban on paper cups would hit manufacturing jobs and damage a growing service industry which makes a major contribution to UK Plc.”

New research carried out in December 2017 has shown that, while coffee sales are cushioning local retailers from a tough climate, this life-line is threatened by a potential latte levy. The consumer survey showed that 75% of Britons would visit, on average, two other shops when they popped out for a coffee and spend around £15. However, indications are that introducing a tax on coffee cups will significantly deter shoppers, with over one third saying it would negatively affect how often they visited their local high street.

The cups we produce meet the most stringent health, safety and food hygiene regulations, keeping consumers safe. Cups made by PCA members use traceable wood fibre from certified sustainable forests. As a result of sustainable forestry practices, forests in Europe have doubled since the 1950s.  In Finland alone the forests are growing by 100million m3 a year meaning wood fibre for global paper cups is equivalent to only 4% of Finland’s annual production – around 15 days of tree growth in Finnish forests.

Whilst paper cups make up only 0.7% of total paper packaging waste and 0.1% of total household waste, we acknowledge that too few cups are being recycled and we are working hard across the industry to improve on this. In October 2017, organisations from across the paper cup supply chain signed an agreement with the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK) to accelerate UK recycling of paper cups. The cross-industry collaboration will work towards delivering a long-term, nationwide paper cup recycling solution. The programme includes:

  • From January 2018 all ACE UK bring banks will accept paper cups for recycling, delivering an additional 415 recycling points located in 105 local authorities across the UK.
  • Cups from these recycling points will be processed at ACE UK’s recycling facility in Halifax.
  • Drawing on its experience and existing relationships with local authorities, waste management organisations and recycling bodies, ACE UK will work to include cups in local authority kerbside collections. In addition to those which collect through bring banks, 66% of local authorities currently collect beverage cartons at kerbside, and it is hoped to achieve similar levels of coverage for cups.

ACE UK has been successfully running the beverage carton industry’s recycling programme for the last ten years driving significant increases in carton recycling as part of its role as the UK beverage carton industry trade body. During this time it has worked closely with local authorities and waste management companies so that today 92% of local authorities collect beverage cartons for recycling through either bring banks or kerbside collection.

About the PCA

The Paper Cup Alliance (PCA) is made up of the eight market-leading paper cup manufacturers in the UK today, employing over 1,700 people across the country. The group was formed in 2017 to coordinate industry efforts to address the issue of paper cup recycling. PCA members are working hard to increase recycling in the UK through a variety of initiatives and through supporting the right behaviours. It aims to better communicate the industry’s efforts on paper cup recycling to reassure stakeholders that the industry takes its environmental responsibilities seriously.

PCA members are part of Pack2Go, the European Association for convenience food packaging, but are specifically focused on the issue of paper cups in the UK.

Commissioned in 2011, Precision Energy Services, Inc. (PES) of Hayden, Idaho, supplied the first sludge-to-energy system to Atlantic Packaging’s 111 plant location. This system replaced a combustion technology that was unable to reliably burn the wet paper mill sludge.

Precision Energy Services designed and supplied a second recycled paper mill sludge-to-energy system for Atlantic Packaging in Ontario, Canada. This system is designed to process 100,000 tons per year of paper mill sludge that was previously being sent to local area landfills. The system eliminates the cost of sludge disposal as well as reduces the cost of fossil fuels by the offset generation of plant steam.

2018 01 04 081259

In 2016, PES received a design, supply, supervise and startup contract for a complete biomass energy system incorporating its Fluid Bed Combustion System. PES designed the system to supply the necessary energy in the form of hot gas to dry the 60 % + MC wet basis sludge to 40% MC wet basis with the majority of the energy produced from the sludge used to generate process steam. The combined energy is produced from a single PES system without the use of natural gas. Natural gas is only used for startup of the system to obtain the required temperature for sludge feeding.

Producing process steam from the sludge-waste residuals, or biomass, promotes the plant’s green energy independence and the company’s green recycling plan by reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills.

The PES system processes recycled paper mill sludge in an environmentally sustainable and economic manner.

2018 01 04 081336

PES designed the complete system and supplied all the system equipment including: the wet and dry sludge storage bins, the wet sludge feed system to the dryer, a single pass rotary drum dryer, the dry sludge collection and storage bin, the dry sludge fuel metering and conveyance system, the PES Fluidized Bed Combustion System with automatic ash cleaning system, a 35,000 PPH, 250 psig waste heat boiler specially designed by PES to allow removal of the high ash quantities generated from the fuel, the boiler economizer and air heater, gas cleaning system and ash collection and storage silo.

The majority of the system was designed by PES to fit into the plant’s existing infrastructure. This allows the majority of the equipment, including the boiler system, to be inside the existing building with only the dryer, baghouse and ash silo outside of the building. A small portion of the building roof was removed to install the boiler system, although the height of equipment required a penthouse to be installed over the boiler.

The PES system receives the incoming sludge and processes it through PES’ proprietary fluid bed technology, which completely combusts the sludge leaving only an ash that is white in color with no carbon residual. This ash is collected from 9 points throughout the boiler, economizer, air heater, multiclones and baghouse and is conveyed pneumatically to an ash silo. The ash system was designed and supplied by PES to have no rotary valves, which are a constant maintenance issue on biomass boilers. The sealed ash system conveys all of the fly ash to a sealed ash silo for unloading into sealed trailers. This feature ensures that the complete boiler system is sealed from the point the fuel is pneumatically conveyed into the fluid bed combustor, providing a clean plant environment.

2018 01 04 081351

The ash is held in the ash silo for pick up by a nearby cement plant where it is utilized as an admixture to the concrete manufactured by the plant. The beneficial utilization of the ash from the sludge is a major advantage to the plant as there is not a requirement for ash landfilling.

Specifically, the ash produced by the boiler system has very similar properties to Kaolin clay, a feedstock which accounts for approximately 40% of cement’s composition. The sludge ash can be added (substituted) at approximately 5% by weight, and actually, improves the final concrete performance. If the ash were to be used in a Ready-Mix plant, it could be used to directly substitute cement, but the sludge ash would require grinding to a consistent, fine particle size. PES has successfully designed and implemented ash-grinding equipment in other energy systems to increase the marketability of the ash.

Mike Oswald, President of Precision Energy Services, said: “We are excited to announce that our client’s second sludge-to-energy plant was completed in early 2017. Our client will see a sufficient reduction in the plant’s overall waste disposal cost as well as a major reduction of their energy cost by the savings obtained in burning the biomass fuel to produce steam, offsetting the use of natural gas.”

About Precision Energy Services: Precision Energy Services, Inc. is a biomass company that specializes in the design and supply of biomass energy systems. Our mission is to help our clients achieve their goal of being more environmentally sustainable and increase their energy independence through the use of wood waste, biomass and organic waste residuals that would otherwise be disposed of.

The first keynote speaker will be Maria Strömme, Professor of Nanotechnology at Uppsala University, who will envision innovative products of the future. The second keynote speech will be given by Ilkka Hämälä, the next President and CEO of Metsä Group. He will describe how the new bioproduct mill in Äänekoski integrates the traditional pulp industry with the manufacture of new bioproducts.

After these keynote speeches, which are intended for everyone, attendees can choose from a range of interesting themed conference programmes that will be held concurrently. The themes include breakthrough innovations in the industry, biorefinery development, changes in consumer behaviour and the opportunities ushered in by digitalisation. Researchers will present current research results and company representatives will tell about how innovations are harnessed in business operations.

Innovations yield high performance and productivity

One of the themed seminars will revolve around innovations: what are the big innovations that are revolutionising the industry and how are they utilised? Heiner Grussenmeyer, Director, Group R&D of Stora Enso, will present a research project seeking breakthrough technology for the manufacture of chemical pulp. Professor Tapani Vuorinen from Aalto University will tell about a new catalytic bleaching method that is currently under development and has the potential to yield substantial cost-savings.

- Domestic innovations improve the image of Finnish companies and their opportunities to thrive in international competition. Finland has long had a strong position in the development of pulp manufacturing technology. If it proves to be successful, catalytic bleaching can significantly reduce the capital and operating costs of the bleaching process through a manyfold increase in chemical reaction efficiency in bleaching. Pulp industry suppliers will also benefit from this development, enabling them to respond to the needs of their customers better, says Tapani Vuorinen, Professor of Wood Chemistry at Aalto University.

Another overarching theme related to innovations is the development of new biorefinery concepts. Professor Lew Cristopher from Lakehead University will analyse the opportunities companies can reap from switching over to new biorefinery concepts.  Olli Dahl, Professor of Environmental Technology within Process Industry at Aalto University, will assess the business opportunities of the new biorefinery planned for Kemijärvi, and Gisle Løhre Johansen, SVP, Business Development and R&D at the Norwegian company Borregaard will present the operations of a Norwegian mill operating under this principle.

Changes in customer behaviour and digitalisation

Digitalisation and its impacts on industry will comprise one of the seminar themes. Danish futurist Rolf Ask Clausen will analyse how digitalisation and technological development change the business models of companies. Petri Vasara from Pöyry’s BioFutures unit will evaluate how digitalisation impacts on companies in the forest industry. Real-life examples of companies illustrating this theme are found in the packaging industry and media.

Digitalisation and innovations will also be showcased at stands presenting the latest practical applications to customers. Pöyry’s stand will present the new business opportunities ushered in by digitalisation and new innovations over the entire value chain.
