–An OpreX Asset Management and Integrity family solution that helps to prevent equipment degradation and improves the efficiency of plant maintenance–

Yokogawa Electric Corporation has announced that it has developed a cavitation detection system and has been available since January 31st. By detecting cavitation, quantifying information, and displaying the data in real time, this system provides an early indication of conditions that can result in a degradation in pump performance. By detecting problems early, before damage occurs which can cause an increase in both vibration and noise levels, this solution improves the efficiency of plant maintenance.

Development Background

Cavitation in fluids can cause damage to pumps. To minimise this damage, it is necessary to detect cavitation at an early stage and take corrective measures such as adjusting the flow rate. One issue, however, is that there has been no way to quantify cavitation. In addition, since cavitation occurs inside equipment, it is impossible to visually check whether this is occurring. Cavitation is usually detected by field personnel who rely on experience gained on the job to detect changes in vibration and noise levels that are caused by excessive cavitation. However, even highly experienced plant personnel and specialists can miss these early signs, and such problems may go undetected until the inevitable increase in vibration and noise occurs.

2019 02 20 093503

In its analysis of this problem, Yokogawa has focused on the principle that there is a direct relationship between differential pressure and cavitation, and has created a condition monitoring solution that involves the quantification of cavitation based on pressure data.

Product Features

  1. Real-time detection

The system that Yokogawa has developed consists of a STARDOMTM FCN-500 network-based control system, a Yokogawa cavitation detection logic program, and a highly accurate (±0.075%) DPharp EJX110A differential pressure transmitter, and relies on the FOUNDATIONTM Fieldbus industrial digital communication standard to link these components. At 100 ms intervals, the DPharp transmitter measures the pressure inside the target equipment, and this data is transmitted via the fieldbus network to the STARDOM FCN-500 system for processing in real time by the logic program. This system is therefore able to detect cavitation issues early on, allowing field personnel to take quick remedial action by, for example, reducing the flow rate to a level that suppresses cavitation without interfering with production line operations.

  1. Troubleshooting

Valves, pumps, and other types of plant equipment can all experience problems such as cavitation which are caused by anything from the opening/closing of a valve, a change in viscosity level or some other physical property of a liquid, or a change in the external environment. Field personnel have traditionally relied on their own experiences and the use of analytical tools to find out what is causing these problems. Thanks to the development of this new system, field personnel will now have a tool that will help them troubleshoot problems with greater efficiency by identifying and quantifying cavitation in plant equipment.

Major Target Markets

Oil, petrochemicals, chemicals, iron and steel, pulp and paper, water supply and wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals, food, etc.

Major Applications

Maintenance of plant facilities such as pumps that tend to deteriorate due to cavitation.

Development Background

FieldMate runs on PCs and is used to configure, adjust, and manage devices in plants. With its support of a variety of digital communication standards, FieldMate can connect to and manage many different manufacturers’ devices. This is a popular software tool that has been installed on more than 10,000 systems since 2006, and Yokogawa has steadily updated it with new functions that truly make it an all-in-one maintenance solution.

The functions added in Release 3.03 make it significantly easier to adjust, check, and calibrate devices, facilitate the sharing of maintenance information by field and office personnel, and allow the connection to devices and instruments that use non-standard communication protocols.

Enhancements

  1. New functions that makes it easier to calibrate differential pressure/pressure transmitters which requires the use of the CA700 pressure calibrator from Yokogawa Meters & Instruments Corporation

Field devices must be periodically calibrated to maintain their accuracy. Differential pressure/pressure transmitters are widely used in plants, and their calibration requires skilled maintenance personnel. To calibrate a transmitter, a field engineer must apply pressure using a hand pump, measure that pressure with a pressure calibrator and a transmitter, and manually record the reading produced by the transmitter. This same procedure must be repeated at various standard pressure levels. Release 3.03 has a new function that clearly displays in real time the pressure calibrator and transmitter readings acquired from the pressure calibrator, and a new function that automatically records calibration data. With these functions, even inexperienced maintenance personnel can easily calibrate these devices.

  1. Enhanced visualization of historical data needed to identify device deterioration

This latest FieldMate release comes with a new function that displays previous measurements on a graph, which is useful, for example, in identifying changes over time in the adjustments needed to eliminate an offset from the zero point. Used together with a function that displays a list of diagnostic data, this can help personnel identify field devices and other types of equipment that are in need of maintenance. Previously, such assessments required a good deal of experience in analyzing measurement data. Thanks to the improved visualization of data with this new function, even inexperienced maintenance workers can accurately make these assessments.

  1. New external interfaces

A new external interface is now available on a special order basis which facilitates connections to host systems, including those that rely on the Cloud. This allows users to easily share FieldMate-generated maintenance reports with their colleagues in the field and back at the office.

In addition, while FieldMate supports all the major communication protocols used by field devices, some plants still rely on field devices and other types of equipment that use unique, non-standard communication protocols. A new external interface is now available that enables FieldMate to connect to, and handle, data from devices that use such non-standard protocols.

Major Target Markets

Process industries such as oil, petrochemicals, chemicals, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, foods, and iron and steel.

Applications

The configuration, adjustment, and troubleshooting of transmitters, analyzers, and other types of field devices in plants, and the management of information on these devices.

FieldMate

FieldMate is a PC-based device configuration tool with an intuitive, user-friendly interface that is used to perform initial setup, routine maintenance, and device replacement. It supports all major industry-standard communication protocols such as FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus, BRAIN, and HART®, as well as the FDT/DTM open software execution framework. Field Device Tool (FDT) is a standard communications interface that links control systems with field devices such as pressure transmitters and flowmeters. It was developed and is promoted by the FDT Group, a non-profit organization. Device Type Manager (DTM) is an FDT-based device driver that is provided by device and control system vendors.

In addition, support for the ISA100.11a field wireless communications standard enables the configuration and adjustment of any vendor's network-capable field devices, regardless of which communications protocol is used. With the aim of helping its customers improve their maintenance efficiency, Yokogawa has continued to improve this product.

–First plant-wide implementation of software-defined networking (SDN) technology in Japan–

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that its subsidiary, Yokogawa Solution Service Corporation, has completed the installation of a software-defined networking (SDN) solution at four paper plants in Japan that are operated by group companies of Oji Holdings Corporation (the Oji Group). This is the first-ever plant-wide implementation in Japan (based on a March 2017 Yokogawa market survey) of SDN, a software-based technology that enables the creation of virtual network environments. As part of this undertaking, Yokogawa assessed the company’s IT infrastructure, including its existing networks, and designed and deployed SDN-based networks at these facilities.

2017 04 10 144728With conventional plant networks, network devices (i.e., routers, firewalls) must be installed and configured for each individual application, location, and facility. The software-based SDN technology enables flexible implementation of virtual networks for each individual application, linking network devices using the same physical network. This facilitates the integrated management, implementation, and reconfiguration of networks. Also, this helps to reduce the required number of network devices and the amount of wiring that needs to be performed, saving both operating and management costs. Furthermore, the visualisation of network status leads to enhanced security. Problems can be easily identified, and network operators can remotely shut down specific segments of the plant network in the event of an emergency.

Yokogawa won this order because the customer highly valued its solid track record in delivering production control systems, wealth of production site knowledge, and experience in providing solutions that lead to enhanced productivity, safety, and product quality.

For this project, Yokogawa chose to use a proven SDN network device solution, NEC Corporation’s UNIVERGE PF series of controllers and switches. While minimising impact on plant operations is usually difficult when replacing IT infrastructure, Yokogawa was able to do this by leveraging its abundant experience and knowledge of production sites. At each of this customer’s plants, Yokogawa assessed their IT infrastructure, including existing networks, and based on this assessment then designed and deployed its SDN technology solution.

Yokogawa is also providing on a trial basis a security management service that monitors the status and health of the networks throughout these plants. While enabling timely preventive measures that help to maintain the health of the networks in these plants, this service also ensures that prompt actions can be taken in the event of an emergency.

In plants around the world, there is an increasing need to improve productivity, safety, and maintenance efficiency, and this is being achieved through the introduction of Industrial IoT (IIoT) technology. Networks help to create new value by connecting various types of devices, but it is essential to be able to flexibly change their configuration, quickly respond to surges in data volume, and ensure more secure operations. For the optimal implementation of IIoT technology, attention is now increasingly turning to the use of SDN technology in plant IT infrastructure. This also will help company IT departments manage the IT infrastructure at their plants in a more integrated manner.

Capitalising on its production site know-how, Yokogawa will continue in its endeavors to introduce SDN and other cutting-edge technologies that will enable the realisation of smarter plant IT infrastructure.
