In Russia, consumer demand for innovative, premium quality tissue products has risen dramatically, driven by tissue manufacturer Hayat Kimya’s leadership in innovation, product differentiation, and quality. As part of its strategic response to the increasing demand, Hayat Kimya is expanding its production in Turkey and Russia with the installation of multiple Perini Constellation™ S8 lines supported by Körber Business Area Tissue’s reliable customer care.

In addition to lines in Turkey, Kӧrber is supporting Hayat Kimya’s installation of Perini Constellation™ S8 lines in a new, 210.000-tonne capacity plant, set for completion by fall 2021 in Kaluga, Russia, just outside Moscow. Hayat Kimya’s investment in the new lines, including wrapping, bundling, and embossing equipment, will make the company the largest tissue manufacturer in Russia — and help catering for the increasing demand for premium tissue products in the Russian market.

2021 02 19 104702“There was a time when only low-end, one-ply and two-ply tissue products were available in many countries,” said Alessandro Granucci, Regional Sales Manager for the Körber Business Area Tissue. “Hayat Kimya introduced premium quality, better-rolled bathroom tissue in three, four, and even up to six plies, elevating consumer expectations while also meeting market demand for such high-quality tissue. Now, one or two-ply products are rarely, if ever, found in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Today’s consumers demand premium options, and Hayat Kimya is well-positioned to meet their expectations as well as to continue its leadership position in the market.”

This dramatic shift in consumer expectations can be catered for thanks to Kӧrber’s industry-leading portfolio that integrates tissue converting and packaging machinery, digital services, embossing technologies, unique supply chain solutions, and aftermarket support. Kӧrber’s reliable solutions and customer care support Hayat Kimya’s delivery of on-demand, premium-quality products in a fiercely competitive, global tissue industry facing complexities that include pulp price volatility, a scarcity of skilled operators, and growing demands for sustainability and overall operational efficiencies.

Hayat Kimya has relied on Kӧrbers best-in-class customer experience and expert collaboration since its establishment in 2003. As industry partner, Körber supported its continued growth into the largest tissue converter of Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

Hayat Kimya Global Tissue Production Director Lufti Aydin values the longstanding advantages of the Kӧrber partnership as highly as he does the technologies. “We strongly believe in Kӧrber equipment,” he said. “It’s truly the best technology available for optimizing production efficiency and achieving best quality”

Perini Constellation™ S8 lines’ proven advantages include enhanced product quality, simplified line operations and increased operational efficiencies. These benefits make them the right choice for Hayat Kimya — and have led to sales of more than 100 Perini Constellation™ S8 lines worldwide over the past five years. Perini Constellation™ S8 solutions offer the most uniform rewinding at all speeds and perfect rolls from the first to the last sheet. As a result, customer satisfaction for product quality is close to 100% and over 85% of global customers reported improved operational efficiencies of at least 10%.

Hayat Kimya’s partnership with Kӧrber is shaping future expectations. By accessing Kӧrber’s solutions, service, and ongoing customer support ecosystems, Hayat Kimya anticipates continued success in raising consumer quality expectations and increasing speed to market as it strengthens its tissue industry leadership.

Increased capacity adds opportunities to strengthen differentiation and sales, making greater quantities of unique, premium offerings — such as Hayat Kimya’s signature bi-sided tissue — readily available on the market as the manufacturer further extends its reach in Iran, Egypt, Nigeria, and Russia.

About Hayat Kimya

Hayat Kimya A.S. is part of the Hayat Group. The Hayat Group primarily operates in the home care, hygiene, and tissue categories for the consumer goods industry. Hayat has continued to invest significantly since their entrance into the tissue category and today the Group carries the distinction of being “The Largest Tissue Manufacturer of Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe” with 490,000 tonnes production capacity/year.

Last year the European Commission launched a major review process of the European Union's trade policy to help contribute to a resilient and sustainable EU economy after the coronavirus pandemic.

The review process looked at strengthening relationships with key trading partners, creating global trade opportunities for small EU businesses and reinforcing the contribution of trade policy to climate change, sustainable development and the digital transition. There is no strong Europe on the world scene without a strong industry, competitive at home and abroad in fair competition with other partners.

2020 02 21 105500This review came to an end today with the formal presentation of renewed trade policy presented by Executive Vice President, Valdis Dombrovskis.

The European Paper Industry welcomes the European Commission’s resolve to ensure that trade tools accompany and promote value chains that are circular, responsible and sustainable. Our products are made in Europe for Europeans with European renewable raw materials and technology, and their growing use reduces EU’s dependence on fossil energy sources from third countries. The European pulp and paper industry also contributes to EU’s autonomy. Our products are also widely traded with 22 % of our production being exported and therefore depend on foreign market access.

We also support the European Commission’s intention to address deforestation and forest degradation at global level. The European Paper Industry is committed to fighting against illegal logging and promotes sustainable forest management (SFM) as one of the solutions to preserve forest biodiversity while helping Europe in it’s ambition towards climate neutrality.

The European Paper Industry hopes that this new EU trade policy will improve market access via the conclusion of ambitious Free-Trade Agreements (FTAs), addressing unfair competition on the EU Single Market and abroad, and addressing level-playing field aspects as top priorities.

A strengthened focus on implementation and enforcement of trade agreements, a strong toolbox of instruments to address unfair practices and promote a level playing field will be crucial.

The pulp and paper industry requires a level playing field with third countries but also a regulatory framework that allows industry to stay and expand in Europe, here are our priority asks:

  • The EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement should be fully implemented, with a pragmatic approach to solve trade disruptions and facilitate supply chains functioning between the EU and the UK
  • With a strong Trade and Sustainable Development Chapter, the EU-Mercosur FTA should be ratified as soon as possible
  • At multilateral level, the negotiations for an Environmental Goods Agreement should be relaunched and ways to deal with industrial subsidies should become a priority
  • At bilateral level, the EU should explore options to include targeted provisions on trade in environmental goods and services, including tariff reductions and addressing non-tariff barriers and work with other countries to harmonise standards, labels and regulatory frameworks to facilitate the commercialisation of green products and services

We welcome the higher climate ambition embedded in this trade policy review. In relation to this, the EU Commission will propose in June this year a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), to protect a number of energy-intensive industries from the risk of carbon leakage i.e. businesses transferring production to other countries with laxer emission constraints due to the costs related to climate policies in Europe. If this carbon leakage materialises, there will be no reduction in global emissions, and this will frustrate the efforts of the EU and its industries to meet the global climate objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Climate change mitigation targets can only be achieved if all countries - EU and non-EU - contribute to it. The same burdens placed on EU manufacturing must apply equally to goods imported for consumption in the EU.

Finally, we call for this trade policy review to positively impact the revamped EU industrial policy. An ambitious EU industrial policy should contribute to the consolidation and resilience of the EU strategic value chains and ecosystems and the strengthening of the EU as a trading power.

Balanced climate, energy and raw materials policies, supported by an ambitious trade strategy, are essential for competitiveness, sustainable growth and employment, supporting innovation and investment by industries.

Oji Fibre Solutions selects ABB to install automation and winder systems to improve operator safety at Penrose Mill in Auckland

Oji Fibre Solutions, a leading producer of market pulp, paperboard and fiber-based packaging, has appointed ABB to supply a specially-designed winder safety system – the first of its kind in New Zealand – as well as a winder drive control system and DCS880 drives. With the mill’s existing winder equipment installed more than 30 years ago, the upgrade will help Oji Fibre ensure safe and efficient future operations, in line with recently updated safety requirements* .

The new system features a range of winder safety improvement steps and devices including mechanical guarding (perimeter personnel access control via a retractable fence that keeps operators away from the danger zone), electrical controls (power interlocks), hydraulic controls (with redundancy), optical (safety light curtains) and safe speed monitoring. The creation of safety zones allows operation in one zone to continue when another zone is infringed, improving uptime at the mill.

2021 02 18 101250The automation of manual tasks – such as hands-free threading, set change with automatic sheet cut off, automatic gluing or auto-measuring slitters - also reduces the risk of injury and failure by eliminating hands-on tasks. All of these automatic upgrades both increase winder throughput and remove the operator from exposure to potential hazards. The improved features are all supported by a new operator control panel with safety programmable logic controller (PLC) and new human-machine interface (HMI).

Penrose Mill, which has an annual output of more than 85,000 tons of containerboard liner uses recycled sources collected by Oji Fibre’s Fullcircle recycling service. Finished products are supplied mainly to the New Zealand, Australian and Asian markets.

“Our focus was to supply the equipment while simultaneously designing a safety system that would allow Oji Fibre to operate effectively to safely meet its customer requirements,” said Shane Archer, Local Division Manager, Process Industries, ABB New Zealand.

“These measures also had to be benchmarked against national and international standards. We are proud to have redesigned and rebuilt Oji Fibre’s safety system in line with New Zealand’s latest requirements, making operations safer, more intelligent and more productive.”

The investment with ABB will further future-proof the Oji Fibre site, which has taken steps to diversify its packaging portfolio in recent years. ABB will also complete all factory acceptance tests and commissioning remotely.

Kotkamills is a forest products company based in Kotka, Finland. The company specializes in consumer boards, laminating paper, and sawn products – and is an innovative pioneer in introducing new technologies. Kotkamills actively accelerates the adoption of plastic-free options in convenience packaging. The Sense condition monitoring system has been employed at Kotkamills from July 2019, ever since the first stages of the solution.

The system monitors the condition of the pumps in the pulp production line. The system monitors the condition of the pumps in the pulp production line.

The challenge

Kotkamills was one of the first customers to use Sulzer Sense in their process after it was launched in 2019. The system monitors the condition of five process pumps and one medium-consistency (MC) pump in the pulp production line.

The system consists of one gateway designed for industrial conditions, located in the process area, and six sensors installed in the bearings of the monitored equipment. The devices are battery-powered and operate in a wireless mesh network.

Sulzer Sense measures vibration and temperature every 30 minutes. The gateway is connected to the Internet / Sulzer’s cloud service via a cellular connection. The monitored devices are within a radius of about 10 meters from each other. This allows for an excellent network and the use of a single gateway.

The solution

The sensors are installed in the bearings of the monitored pumps. The sensors are installed in the bearings of the monitored pumps. The commissioning of the condition monitoring system was quick, easy and effortless and did not require special skills from the installer. The mobile app provided by Sulzer for the deployment of the system is unambiguous and easy to use.

The Sulzer Sense monitoring device measures machine vibrations and temperature to detect possible imbalance, misalignment, looseness, and bearing wear. It helps to identify changes in equipment condition parameters and indicates potential faults at an early stage, thus supporting predictive maintenance.

The cloud service provides the customer with easy access to device information. Through the cloud service, the customer can monitor the condition of the devices and view hardware trend information anywhere and anytime.

Customer benefit

  • In addition to the advantages of continuous monitoring, one of the most significant benefits to the customer is access to detailed equipment information such as spare parts lists and product documentation through the service. For maintenance and repair work, there is no need to look in the archive for instructions and drawings.
  • Sulzer Sense is suitable for all pumps, agitators, mixers and motors regardless of the type or brand in all industries.

"The system has worked reliably, and the measurement results are in line with our own reference measurements." Harri Carling, Supervisor, Condition Monitoring and Reliability at Kotkamills.
