Illustri Festival 2019 will be held in Vicenza from May 18th to June 23rd, with the collaboration of Burgo Group which will present its project Cartaceo#01, Paper: a never-ending material.

After the success of  BookCity  Milano 2018, the illustrations of  Emiliano Ponzi and the storytelling of Gabriella Greison arrive in Vicenza to tell us a story about the paper as an never-ending material, a material with endless possibilities, born form a machine that seems to never end, which throughout human history has taken our dreams and stories and propelled them into the future in a never-ending exchange, transforming over and again into new and different products.

The exhibition inside the  Basilica Palladiana (Sala degli Zavatteri), curated by  Francesco Poroli, reproduces the unfolding  of a leporello, the paper object created by the collaboration between Ponzi and Greison, while the animations curated by Emiliano Ponzi run on a monitor togegher with the reading of the story Paper: a never-ending material.

The opening of all the exhibitions is scheduled for Saturday, May 18th from 10.00 am. The complete program and contents of the exhibitions are available at the following link:

Companies that use natural resources have the duty to ensure the resources come from responsible sources. The Vancouver Declaration is a public promise, with which companies of all sizes and origins are committed to contributing to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals adopted in 2015, while underlining their commitment to a more sustainable forestry chain.

burgo logoThe Declaration was presented during the 2017 FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) General Assembly in Vancouver, Canada, last October; in addition to Burgo, other companies signed in support of the initiative: IKEA, H & M, SIG, Marks & Spencer, Jysk, Mitsubishi Paper Mills and Fuji Xerox. The objective is to attract even more companies involved throughout the supply chain. Given the growing membership rate, this declaration, according to FSC, will have a positive impact on three key areas of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. Obtaining collective enterprise support in the struggle to protect our forests and our planet is a fundamental step in combating climate change and ensuring the protection of ecosystems.

From a social point of view, the role and importance of people in forestry cannot be underestimated; this is why the Vancouver Declaration strengthens the commitment so that all people living in the forest and its surrounding areas are involved in decisions that are of interest to "their" forests. The core of the FSC system is, in fact, the guarantee of the stakeholders’ commitment, democratic decision-making processes and the protection of forest workers.

Companies supporting the Declaration and the new FSC standards contribute concretely in ensuring forest workers worldwide receive a fair salary for the work they do and the protection of people who depend on forests for their sustenance.

Measures taken to protect the environment and people, protect the future of the industry itself.

This collective action and end-to-end collaboration is becoming increasingly strategic.

As Burgo, we signed the Vancouver Declaration because we are fully aware that forest resources are the essential component in paper production and that business continuity depends on long- term access to these raw materials. Without forestry products, we will not be able to serve our customers with products that meet their expectations: functionality, quality, availability, and sustainability. As a result, we recognize the responsibility we have in helping to ensure that forests are managed in a sustainable way and for quite some time now we’ve been actively committed to this undertaking by offering FSC-certified products. We have therefore taken this additional opportunity to offer visible and credible guarantees regarding our commitments to our customers and other stakeholders through shared and global action.

To celebrate such a significant event Burgo made an artbook, Burgo Collection 1997 -2017, curated by Francesco Poroli and printed on Burgo coated paper R4 Next satin. The book will be  featured  on    May 31st, in association with Illustri Festival. Robert Newman, a famous American art director who signed the introductory text, will attend the event which is part of the extensive program of Illustri Festival 2017, the third edition of the two-year festival of illustration; a whole month of meetings, workshops and eight great exhibitions which will animate the most prestigious monuments in the city and will involve more than ninety illustrators.

Burgo Group and the EU Timber Regulation

burgo logoOn March 3rd, 2013 the European Regulation 955/2010 (known as Timber Regulation) entered into application; it applies to timber and all timber products, including paper. The main goal is to ensure the legal origin of all timber and derived products  which are imported and/or traded for the first time within the European Union’s borders.

The Regulation applies to whoever places timber and/or timber products on the European market for the first time (“operators”) and prohibits the introduction and trade of illegally harvested timber; operators will have to exercise a Due Diligence System in order to mitigate the risk of illegally harvested timber products by means of a risk analysis and mitigation  approach.

burgo woodMoreover, the Regulation provides an obligation of traceability for whoever trades within the European market (“traders”), by keeping record of information referred to suppliers and customers  involved.

Burgo Group has created and always applied its own Good Forestry Management Policy, with the selection and responsible evaluation of its suppliers; this assured that the totality of the fibrous raw materials are controlled and traceable, unless certified with FSC® or PEFC chain of custody.

Consequently, in concomitance with the entering into application of the Regulation and in full compliance with it, Burgo as an “operator” brings into action an appropriate due diligence system; at the same time, as a “trader”, it implements an appropriate traceability system, providing all the relevant information and immediately informing all customers accordingly.

mant burgoBurgo Group communicates the suspension of production at Mantova Mill starting February 9th, 2013.

Current production capacity of the plant is 150,000 tons/year of Newsprint.

The decision is due to the unsustainable impact of energy costs in Italy. Additional causes are European Newsprint market overcapacity and raw materials costs.

Burgo Group will evaluate developments of the competitive scenario before taking any decision about the industrial future of the plant.

burgoThe Burgo Group plant in Verzuolo (Cuneo) has obtained its EMASregistration from the Ecolabel and Ecoaudit board of the Italian Department for the Environment.

This is a very important result for this paper mill where the Group was founded more than a century ago.

On October 22nd, 2012, during renewal of the EMAS registration for the Company’s plants in Toscolano Maderno (Brescia) and Mantova, it was decided to extend the same certification to the Verzuolo site; the ruling is valid for all the facilities until April 22nd, 2015.

EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a system that companies and organisations sign up to voluntarily, undertaking to monitor and improve their environmental efficiency, and providing the control authority and local population a tool to assess their environmental impact.

EMAS registration is further confirmation of the Burgo Group’s continued commitment to environmental policies and sustainability. All the environmental data for the plants involved have been included in an official document, the Environmental Statement, which is assessed and endorsed by an authorised independent Inspector.
