PulPaper, PacTec and Wood&Bioenergy on 29–31 May represent the cornerstones of an international event for the forest industry, including an exhibition and extensive programme. In the event, approximately 500 companies ranging from forest industry giants to small start-up businesses will meet. Throughout the fair, there will also be various programmes in three different seminars and on three stages for information briefings. In total, about 100 experts will take the stage at the event.

The event for forest industry is created round PulPaper, and it has gained also international attention. Almost 130 international companies from over 20 countries are participating in the event. The seminar presenters with the longest journey will come from North America and Japan. The trade fair also expects visitors from various continents. In addition, many representatives from international media will come to the trade fair.

Start-ups help in taking digital leaps and in meeting the challenges of the circular economy

A total of 25 start-up businesses will be present at the trade fair, and all of them have developed solutions to the problems of circular economy and demands posed by digital leaps, to mention but a few. The start-up businesses offer innovations, for example, for recycling bio-ash and using wood as a raw material for various products. In addition, the businesses have developed tools to better utilise industrial internet and knowledge, to support strategic decision-making by means of artificial intelligence, and to exploit augmented reality, i.e. AR, in packaging industry in order to increase customer loyalty.

Information briefings provide a snapshot of the latest innovations in the industry

PulPaper’s exhibition area, Future Square, will offer free information briefings with themes in accordance with the trade fair days. On Tuesday, companies give short presentations about their new products and services. On Wednesday the floor will be given to forest companies, and on Thursday, the programme will be directed to students in the industry.

The forest companies will bring their directors, who will then talk about innovations, responsibility and brand new possibilities for the packaging industry. Timo Heikka, the Director of Biorefinery Unit at Stora Enso, will tell more about Stora Enso’s recent investments. Issues relating to responsibility and circular economy will be covered by Kaija Pehu-Lehtonen, the Senior Vice President of Business Development at Metsä Fibre, as well as Saila Kettunen, the Director of Barrier Board at Kotkamills. Berry Wiersum, the Director of Sappi Europe explains, how innovations are now an integral part of the company’s operations. The programme also includes ideas concerning the future of the packaging industry in terms of new materials and digitalisation.

Pitching for the forest industry innovation contest

On Thursday, the semifinalists of the innovation contest aimed for the university students in the field of forest industry will take the Future Square stage with prepared pitches of their work. The innovation contest is named “Wood U Make It Happen”, and the goal is to select the best ideas with new approaches to the challenges in forest industry, as well as to the most common megatrends, such as population growth and environmental challenges.

Based on the pitches, the jury selects the finalists. The jury includes top experts in the field of bioeconomics, and the chairperson of the jury will be Maija Itkonen, founder of Gold&Green Foods. The first prize is EUR 10,000, second prize EUR 5,000, and the third prize EUR 3,000. The winners will be announced at the end of the year during the centennial celebrations of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.

• The semifinalists in the contest represent a broad representation of various universities throughout Finland and also of many different approaches ranging from services to forest cultivation, as well as materials made from totally varied parts of the wood. This highlights the variety in innovation, and also the inspiring new prospects for using the wood in different ways, says jury chairperson Maija Itkonen.

PulPaper is the leading exhibition and conference event in the forest industry’s calendar. It will be held in Helsinki, Finland on 29–31 May 2018. The forest industry is experiencing a transition period as the environmental impact of the sector is known better than before. The event programme takes this into consideration with a strong environmental perspective.

The umbrella theme of the event is “Visit tomorrow today.” This refers to new innovations and technologies that the forest industry can harness to evolve in the digitalising world, while respecting the environment.

PulPaper will feature a varied seminar programme on all three days of the event. Business Forum is a seminar for company management, focusing on themes ranging from consumer habits to sustainable development and from innovations to changes in management.

PulPaper Conference, targeted at forest industry experts and researchers, will be held from 30 to 31 May. Forty experts, researchers and company representatives from the Nordic countries, Japan, North America, and other parts of the world will speak at the seminar.  The themes include the circular economy, biomass use, climate change, and biorefinery development.

Environmental friendliness as competitive advantage

Environmental standards are often seen as a burden on industry. However, PulPaper approaches this topic through opportunities. As environmental friendliness and responsible production are increasingly guiding the purchasing behaviour of consumers, innovations that cater to consumers’ wishes in terms of ecology, functionality, aesthetics and price level are emerging as competitive advantages for companies.

PulPaper Conference swings the spotlight on many innovations that are revolutionising the whole industry. These include data-based sensors used in pulp industry wastewater treatment, a new catalytic bleaching method and the utilisation of industrial waste as an agricultural fertiliser. In addition, the conference will present a research project that seeks a breakthrough technology for chemical pulp production.

Wooden future of packaging materials

Plastic is the dominant packaging material the world over. Due to its long decomposition period, plastic waste places a great burden on the environment. Almost all fields of industry have started using bioplastic: electronics, agriculture, textiles and healthcare. Wood is envisioned as the renewable raw material of the future, which will be used in both packaging materials and textiles.

PulPaper Conference will present solutions based on renewable wood materials to replace fossil-based materials. The Swedish startup Cellutech will reveal what new materials the company is currently developing from wood. The current development of bioplastics will also be reviewed. The Finnish packaging startup Sulapac will be presented as a business case that provides a great example of ingenious packaging design. Its packaging materials are made from wood and intended for cosmetics products. They turn ecology into a luxury. Sulapac has a competitive edge because it can compete in terms of price with comparable packaging materials made from plastic, and the material can be mass produced with the same equipment as plastic.

PulPaper Conference will also deal with the use of forest biomass and the management of climate change. Speakers will address regulations related to the industry at the EU level and ponder the availability of biomass and related policies.

3D printing of biomaterials

The 3D Printing of Biomaterials seminar will also be held at PulPaper. When it comes to printing materials, the development of biomaterials opens up plenty of opportunities for new value-added uses of cellulose. 3D printing of biomaterials provides companies with a way to make cost-efficient customised products that save on materials and are environmentally sustainable. The seminar will present promising examples of cellulose-based insulation materials, for example.

Facts and figures

Forest industry products account for about 20 per cent of Finnish exports, and the industry is important to the country’s success. The forest industry is a major employer, particularly in rural regions – it employs about 41,000 people directly and around 140,000 indirectly. Finland has 49 paper and pulp mills, and more than 200 industrial sawmills, panel factories and other companies manufacturing wood products. The current products will serve as the basis of business in the years ahead, too, as next-generation paper, packaging and wood products are developed continuously. In addition, new bioeconomy products and business functions are being developed alongside the current products. The bioeconomy will create new companies, jobs and prosperity.

Next spring, PulPaper will bring the world’s best experts together in Helsinki to explore digitalisation, biorefinery development and breakthrough innovations. The seminars will feature top international speakers from Japan, North America and other parts of the world, as well as renowned Finnish business leaders and researchers. PulPaper 2018 will be held at Messukeskus Helsinki, Expo and Convention Centre from 29 to 31 May.

The theme of the event is “Visit tomorrow today.” This refers to new innovations and technologies that the forest industry can harness to evolve in the digitalising world. During the event, the two-day Pulpaper Conference will be held from 30 to 31 May. More than 40 Finnish and international experts, researchers and company representatives are scheduled to give presentations at this top seminar. The conference will consist of keynote speeches for all participants and a selection of themed conference programmes.

The first keynote speaker will be Maria Strömme, Professor of Nanotechnology at Uppsala University, who will envision innovative products of the future. The second keynote speech will be given by Ilkka Hämälä, the next President and CEO of Metsä Group. He will describe how the new bioproduct mill in Äänekoski integrates the traditional pulp industry with the manufacture of new bioproducts.

After these keynote speeches, which are intended for everyone, attendees can choose from a range of interesting themed conference programmes that will be held concurrently. The themes include breakthrough innovations in the industry, biorefinery development, changes in consumer behaviour and the opportunities ushered in by digitalisation. Researchers will present current research results and company representatives will tell about how innovations are harnessed in business operations.

Innovations yield high performance and productivity

One of the themed seminars will revolve around innovations: what are the big innovations that are revolutionising the industry and how are they utilised? Heiner Grussenmeyer, Director, Group R&D of Stora Enso, will present a research project seeking breakthrough technology for the manufacture of chemical pulp. Professor Tapani Vuorinen from Aalto University will tell about a new catalytic bleaching method that is currently under development and has the potential to yield substantial cost-savings.

- Domestic innovations improve the image of Finnish companies and their opportunities to thrive in international competition. Finland has long had a strong position in the development of pulp manufacturing technology. If it proves to be successful, catalytic bleaching can significantly reduce the capital and operating costs of the bleaching process through a manyfold increase in chemical reaction efficiency in bleaching. Pulp industry suppliers will also benefit from this development, enabling them to respond to the needs of their customers better, says Tapani Vuorinen, Professor of Wood Chemistry at Aalto University.

Another overarching theme related to innovations is the development of new biorefinery concepts. Professor Lew Cristopher from Lakehead University will analyse the opportunities companies can reap from switching over to new biorefinery concepts.  Olli Dahl, Professor of Environmental Technology within Process Industry at Aalto University, will assess the business opportunities of the new biorefinery planned for Kemijärvi, and Gisle Løhre Johansen, SVP, Business Development and R&D at the Norwegian company Borregaard will present the operations of a Norwegian mill operating under this principle.

Changes in customer behaviour and digitalisation

Digitalisation and its impacts on industry will comprise one of the seminar themes. Danish futurist Rolf Ask Clausen will analyse how digitalisation and technological development change the business models of companies. Petri Vasara from Pöyry’s BioFutures unit will evaluate how digitalisation impacts on companies in the forest industry. Real-life examples of companies illustrating this theme are found in the packaging industry and media.

Digitalisation and innovations will also be showcased at stands presenting the latest practical applications to customers. Pöyry’s stand will present the new business opportunities ushered in by digitalisation and new innovations over the entire value chain.

Two presentations will delve even deeper into the theme of digitalisation. Janne Öhman, CEO of Siemens, will present a forest industry digitalisation project being carried out with VTT, and Satu Kiiskinen, EVP, Industrial and Consumer Services at Tieto Corporation, will discuss the possibilities of the use of big data and industrial Internet in the forest industry.

PulPaper is the leading international event in the forest industry’s calendar, and will be held at Messukeskus in Helsinki on 29–31 May 2018. The event acts as a global meeting place where visitors can get a comprehensive overview of the latest forestry technology. The previous event attracted visitors from a total of 70 different countries, and exhibitors from 30 countries are expected at PulPaper 2018.

The event was last held in 2014. Preparations for the 2018 event are now in full swing with regard to both the programme and sales. New technologies and innovations from start-ups will also be on display at the event. 

Three other events will also be held at the same time as PulPaper: Wood, a new event in the field of mechanical wood processing; PacTec Helsinki, a packaging industry event; and the brand-new Bioenergy.

Business Forum – a new seminar package targeted at company management – will be held on the opening day. The exhibition area’s Future Square stage will run a free programme focusing on the opportunities afforded by the bioeconomy and career outlooks for industry students.
