In the Chinese province of Guangxi, Asia Pulp & Paper produces high-quality ivory board made of 100% virgin fibers on the BM 1 supplied by Voith. The machine went into operation at the beginning of 2013 and produces since then highest quality board. The production line delivered by Voith is the highest performing board machine for ivory board worldwide, with a wire width of 8,750 mm, a design speed of 1,400 m/min and an annual production capacity of 1,200,000 metric tons.

voith bm1

Taking into account the very high requirements for board quality, Voith delivered the entire production line – from the wet end process to the winder. The Guangxi BM 1 is based on proven components and products that have been successfully used many times. This provides the paper maker with a high level of investment security. With this production line, Voith delivered everything from a single source and thus assumed responsibility for the entire process.

The three-layer former concept with the newly developed DuoFormer D II provides for an optimal dewatering capacity and production speed. In the press section, the triple NipcoFlex press allows the highest dry content and thus low energy use. In addition, an excellent level of smoothness with a closed web run and thus extremely good runability are achieved by this press concept.

The outstanding surface quality and printability of the ivory board produced on the Guangxi BM 1 is essentially determined by pre-calendering of the unprocessed board before the coating machine. The innovative concept with the EcoCal Plus calender combines for the first time worldwide an oil-heated hard nip calender with an external induction heating system and an upstream nozzle moisturizer. The results are significant savings of raw materials. Very good surface quality is achieved by the use of DynaCoat AT coating units.

An EcoSoft Delta calender with two soft nips on the printed side is used before the reel for the first time so as to ensure a very uniform surface quality and improved board gloss. Then the board is wound in a gentle and controlled manner with the Sirius and processed with the VariFlex winder into paper rolls. Also included in Voith’s delivery were the chemical preparation, automation of the entire process and the system engineering.

The Guangxi BM 1 produces high-quality packaging paper which is suitable for all current printing processes such as flexographic, offset or rotogravure in a basis weight range of 180-350 g/m². The primary areas of use for the board are high-quality folded boxes for cosmetics and luxury items for the Asian market.

With Infinity, Voith has developed a completely new generation of endless and seam press fabrics containing a base structure that ensures the fabric will resist compaction during operation. The dewatering performance therefore remains consistently high while maintaining high paper quality.

infin voith

The high-quality base fabric of Infinity is woven in an especially uniform method. Additionally, the laminated structure retains its open volume during the entire running time due to a high level of compressibility and better rebound behaviour in comparison to conventional press fabrics. These characteristics increase the dewatering performance and reduce dirt deposits and fiber loss. Infinity rapidly achieves optimal saturation, so the desired machine speed is quickly reached. The high number of contact points of the base fabric provides for uniform pressure distribution, increasing the dry content and the quality of the paper sheet.

The paper manufacturer has the choice of several designs due to the modular concept of Infinity. Infinity can be tailored to the specific needs of the application to provide immediate benefit to paper machine operation. The new press fabric is also available with seams: the seam loops have an identical loop length, roundness and spacing, which makes the installation of the fabrics faster, simpler and safer.

Paper manufacturers are convinced of BaglessPlus disc filter sectors made of corrugated stainless steel from Voith: Not only does a conversion to the most modern filter technology in the fiber recovery or dewatering process increase capacity and filtrate quality, but it also lowers maintenance costs.

voith blades

Voith has already rebuilt more than 20 disc filters from various manufacturers in stock preparation and in the approach flow system with BaglessPlus disc filter sectors. Paper manufacturers all over the world are thus being assisted in managing sustainable processes.

The BaglessPlus disc filter sectors offer 15 - 20% higher capacity. In addition, the filtrate quality remains high during the entire service life. That is due above all to the stable design of the disc filter sectors. Since a consistent filtrate quality in the super-clear filtrate of up to 25 ppm can be achieved, it is possible to save large amounts of fresh water. BaglessPlus disc filters also impress with their excellent service life of 10 to 20 years. The first Bagless disc filter was put into operation in 1998 and is still in use. That not only saves time for maintenance work, but also reduces costs.

Voith uses products such as BaglessPlus disc filter sectors to rebuild existing machines from different manufacturers. Improved operation is thus achieved for a fraction of the costs involved in a new installation. The conversion to BaglessPlus is possible for most disc filter sizes.

Voith also offers filter bags made of polypropylene for various applications with a special protective fabric. Conventional filter discs with steel fabric are also in use. Sometimes achieving the optimum requires more than a conversion to the most modern disc filter sector technology. With a filtrate valve of the latest generation or a conversion to HiCon disc filter with a production increase of up to 80%, Voith has a large rebuild portfolio available for further optimizing a disc filter.

The OnV FeltView system developed by Voith enables accurate, continuous and especially safe real-time measurement of press felt moisture and permeability. The OnV FeltView system supports paper manufacturers with both routine operation and troubleshooting, as it makes profile and trend information constantly available.

voith felt

OnV FeltView consists of a cross-beam and a carriage fitted with sensors for measuring moisture and permeability. This means that sporadic manual measurements by operating personnel are no longer necessary. The system offers the paper manufacturer significant benefits in respect of cross-profile problems and daily operation of the plant: On the one hand, profile problems can now be identified in the measurement profile at an early stage, allowing appropriate remedial action to be taken. On the other hand, the manufacturer is now able to tailor the felt conditioning process to the actual measured condition of the felt. As a result, the felt can always be operated so as to optimize runability and dewatering, all without risking the health of operating personnel.

The innovative OnV FeltView technology is already being used successfully by nine tissue manufacturers. The condition of the press felt in tissue production is crucial to the runability of the entire plant as well as for gas and steam consumption. If the felt is in an optimum condition, massive energy savings and maximum productivity levels are possible. With OnV FeltView and a wide range of extra services Voith is helping paper manufacturers to achieve these goals. The OnView information system, which integrates the data from OnV FeltView, facilitates a highly efficient analysis of historical and current felt data.

Top quality from the very start

Every paper manufacturer wishes that its new system will achieve good performance after a successful startup. This happened exactly when Bohui Paper’s BM 3 was commissioned. The board machine’s starting curve and efficiency were very good from the beginning. In addition, the product, a quadruple-coated ivory board, conquered the market within a short time.

bohui

Production on the BM 3 began last year and launched a new chapter in the history of paper and board manufacturer Bohui Paper. Although it is a long-established company from the Chinese province of Shandong, the BM 3 was the first machine going into operation at its Dafeng site in Jiangsu Province, where the company plans to install other board machines. One year after commissioning the paper manufacturer is very contented with the performance of the BM 3 as Huang Ju, Vice President at Bohui Paper, confirms: “After a very fast start-up, we have soon been producing paper of perfect quality. We are very happy to work with Voith, a partner with large technological experience and know-how.”

Proven components, modern technology. With a wire width of 8,750 mm and a total length of 400m, the BM 3 is one of the most efficient board machines ever. It is designed for an annual production of 750,000 metric tons of quadruple-coated ivory board in the basis weight range of 290–340 g/m2. The machine components for the complete production line were supplied by Voith, as were the entire automation technology and the first clothing.

The BM 3 features three Master Jet III-F headboxes and a three-layer wire section with a latest generation DuoFormer D. On the wire section’s intermediate ply a DuoShake ensures optimum fiber orientation and higher strength values. The press section consists of a double felted Tandem NipcoFlex press for a maximum line load of 800 kN/m. A steam blower box is installed upstream of the second nip for moisture cross profile control. An offset press ensures the high surface quality necessary, while surface smoothness is achieved by an EcoCal Hardnip calender with nozzle-type moisturizer and a heated roll with FlexiTherm coil. The coater consists of four DynaCoat AT coating units that use JetFlow free-jet applicators for non-contacting application of the two preliminary coats, the rear and top coats. At the end of the production line a Sirius roller with EcoChange reel changing system rolls up the ivory board for downstream processing by two VariFlex winders.//

Bohui BM 3: Information on the Voith scope of supply

Headbox and wire section. Three MasterJet III-F headboxes with lamella technology: the headbox with dilution water technology in the intermediate ply ensures optimum cross profiles. The wire section is a conventional three layer wire section with a DuoFormer D on the intermediate ply. The DuoFormer D is one of the latest generation formers from Voith designed for very high dewatering performance. In addition, a DuoShake is used on the intermediate ply for optimum fiber orientation and improved strength values.

Press section. The press section consists of a Tandem NipcoFlex press, followed by an offset press for optimum surface quality. Both NipcoFlex presses are double-felted and designed for a maximum line load of 800 kN/m. A steam blower box is installed upstream of the second nip for moisture cross profile control.

Sizing press and dryer section. The pre-dryer section is normally two-tier, with the first three dryer groups single-tier with DuoStabilizers. The SpeedSizer AT can run in SpeedSizer mode and as a conventional sizing press, in which case Voith SizeWings enable higher operating speeds for starch feeding. At the end of the after-dryer section there is an EcoCal Hardnip calender including upstream nozzle-type moisturizers to obtain optimum smoothness in the base paper. To also achieve optimum smoothness at high speeds, very high temperatures are necessary on the heated roll, so it is fitted with an external FlexiTherm coil.

Coating section and finishing. The coater comprises four DynaCoat AT coating units, each with a JetFlow free-jet applicator, which applies the coating color in a contactless fashion less likely to cause damage. The first two coating units apply the preliminary coat, the third applies the rear coat and the fourth the top coat. The coating is dried by means of InfraAir drying, InfraRed dryers, MCB high-performance dryer hoods and an HCB Turn air drying and contactless web turning system.

A curl correcting section with six drying cylinders corrects the paper curl. The final surface treatment is done by the EcoSoft calender. To reel up the high-quality board without damaging it a Sirius roller with EcoChange reel change system was installed (maximum winding diameter 4.4 m). Two VariFlex winders perform the next process stage.

The automation technology comprises

  •     the process control system for stock preparation, the wet end process and the steam, condensate, hood and air systems of the board machine.
  •     the machine-level control for the complete board machine
  •     the entire quality control system with six scanners and
  •     the complete machine monitoring system for monitoring the roll bearings.

Voith’s newly developed Revolution press felt has now been launched into the market for production of board and packaging paper. With the aid of this innovation, paper production is even more efficient.

pfAlong with increased drying performance, Revolution ensures shorter start-up phases, energy savings and consistent quality characteristics over its entire service life. The key innovation of Revolution is its structure, which has a special polymer layer. Revolution can thus control the flow of water before, during and after passage through the nip. For this reason, it dewaters better and contaminates less. The dry content is higher by up to 2% than with a conventional felt. The self-cleaning effect also helps to ensure the performance of the press felt remains the same over its entire service life.

Paper produced with the aid of Revolution has especially good surface characteristics due to the larger contact surface with the paper or board web. It was confirmed in practical testing that this new press felt allows substantially shorter start-up times. From the beginning, the level of nip dewatering is very high. Revolution thus has a positive effect on the energy balance.
