Operations in the areas unimpacted by the fire that broke out on May 7 at Valmet’s Rautpohja factory in Jyväskylä, Finland, will start returning back to normal from the beginning of this week (week 21). It is believed that returning the operations back to normal in these areas will take approximately 1-2 weeks. Valmet is also evaluating the potential need to transfer certain operations to alternative locations mostly in Finland.

The fire did not impact the operations in Engineering, Foundry, Service Center and Pilot machine and the operations have continued in these parts without disruptions.

valmet logo rgbThe official investigations by authorities are continuing in a limited factory area. The investigations are expected to be finalized within the coming weeks. The closure of fire-impacted workshop areas for the duration of the investigations is temporarily impacting the work of approximately 120 employees, which is around 5 percent of the total number of employees at the Rautpohja site. The employee impact of the fire has been mitigated with work re-arrangements, paid absence and holidays.

The impact assessment of the fire to the business continuity and customer deliveries is proceeding, and the final outcome will be known once the official investigations have been concluded and the full scale of the incident is clear.

“We are proceeding with our ramp up of operations and continuing to mitigate the business impact and co-operate with authorities in the root-cause investigations. We have been able to already deliver first products to our customers from the Rautpohja factory after the incident and our supplier network is operating normally again,” says Jari Vähäpesola, President, Paper business line, Valmet.

To broaden its offering for tissue machines, Valmet launches a new polyurethane roll cover, Valmet Press Roll Cover PL. The roll cover’s wear-resistant material and adaptive structure are developed to cope with the harsh operating conditions in tissue production, thus leading to longer lifetime of roll cover and energy savings.

Tissue machines represent the most challenging environment for press rolls due to high machine speeds and extreme Yankee cylinder temperatures – placing high demands on the roll covers as well.

“The new Valmet Press Roll Cover PL is a long-lasting polyurethane roll cover especially designed for tissue pressing applications. It complements the existing applications on the market with unique properties that further improve the tissue production line’s efficiency, capacity, and product quality”, says Ulla Kanerva, Global Technology Manager, Roll Covers and Maintenance, Valmet.

Compared to other cover products, Valmet Press Roll Cover PL is available with wider hardness range together with improved mechanical properties, from 5P&J to 50P&J.

Significant cost-saving potential

The adaptive roll cover structure of Valmet Press Roll Cover PL helps to achieve more uniform nip profiles and bulk savings.

“To limit the energy needed for drying the tissue sheet, we usually concentrate on improving the post-press dryness. It reduces the energy demand on the Yankee dryer, which in turn removes bottlenecks in the dryer’s performance and operating costs”, Ulla Kanerva explains.

Valmet Press Roll Cover PL offers the possibility for high open grooved areas and large void volumes, assuring maximal nip dewatering and consistent tissue quality. By selecting optimal roll covers and surface topography with a matching press felt, tissue makers can further improve dewatering.

“To summarize, choosing Valmet Press Roll Cover PL leads to energy savings, better runnability and improved time efficiency in tissue production. On the other hand, the wear-resistant polyurethane material also extends the roll cover change intervals, leading to further cost savings”, Kanerva continues.

Valmet introduces a renewed Valmet DNA Online Condition Monitoring solution, which provides automated anomaly detection technology and connection to both wired and wireless vibration sensors. The solution enables the use of optimal measurements and analysis for each machine, based on their criticality and field conditions.

Condition monitoring is part of the Valmet DNA Automation System, providing machine condition information in the same user interface as the process automation. The single system significantly improves collaboration between operations and maintenance teams.

The new Valmet DNA User Interface is available in a local network or remotely through a secure internet connection. Users can flexibly manage the process and maintenance information from the same system, based on their user rights.

Automated anomaly detection and diagnostics allow users to focus on planning the correct maintenance actions

The renewed system features an automated anomaly detection, which reports the changes in key vibration parameters and provides an early indication of possible machinery fault. Anomaly detection is based on measurement history and therefore preset alarm limits are not needed. The automated diagnostic application identifies fault types and severity based on the measured vibration data. This allows users to focus on planning the correct maintenance actions to improve efficiency and uptime.

The new Valmet DNA Condition Monitoring provides automated anomaly detection technology for wired and wireless measurements. It improves maintenance efficiency by providing early warnings for possible machinery faults. The right vibration monitoring solution for each machine

Valmet provides a wide range of vibration sensors for various machinery. In addition to traditional wired vibration sensors, Valmet now introduces wireless vibration sensors and measurement modules. These can be divided into three categories: wireless piezoelectric accelerometers, wireless Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers, and wireless measurement modules for external sensors.

Wireless piezoelectric vibration sensor WVS-100 offers the same high-quality measurement as traditional wired piezoelectric sensors, capable of measuring even the earliest indications of a developing fault. Wireless MEMS WVS-200 provides a cost-efficient monitoring solution with more limited measurement characteristics. It is a valid option for less-critical machinery or as an alternative for route-based condition monitoring.

Wireless measurement modules WMM-100, WTM-100, and FM4 are designed for connecting external vibration and trigger sensors via cable and transmitting the measurement wirelessly forward. The modules are useful in cases where there is a need to use existing or specific sensor types, but cabling is expensive or impractical.

The renewed Valmet DNA Online Condition Monitoring will be introduced at Teknologia 2022 fair in Helsinki, May 3-5 2022, hall 6, stand 6f50.

LD Celulose S.A, a joint venture between the Austrian company Lenzing and the Brazilian company Dexco, invested about USD 1.3 bn in a 500,000 tonne/year dissolving wood pulp mill in the Triângulo Mineiro region in Brazil. Valmet delivered the key process islands and integrated automation solutions for the mill. The equipment operations and the production ramp-up in the new mill have now successfully started.

Valmet delivered the project with extended scope of supply. Detailed engineering for the project was started in the beginning of 2020 and the installation works at the site in the beginning of 2021.

“Our new mill brings a positive socioeconomic impact throughout the region. The dissolving pulp is a key raw material for manufacturing Lenzing’s wood-based textile and specialty fibers. This mill is among the most productive and energy-efficient mills in the world. We have adopted the most advanced technologies in the mill, not only in the sustainable production process, but also in the solutions that seek to reduce emissions to the environment. We are very happy that despite the outside challenges we have been able to follow our schedule”, states Luís Künzel, CEO of LD Celulose.

“This project is an excellent reference of dissolving pulp technology and our green field pulp mill delivery capability. Almost everything in this project was implemented during the global Covid-19 pandemic. We have been working remotely in engineering, project management and even in factory acceptance test for the automation system. This has required a lot of trust and communications between the Valmet and LD Celulose teams and special attention to planning and scheduling. I’m pleased to see how our teams have reached this important milestone of starting the production at the site”, says Bertel Karlstedt, Business Line President, Pulp and Energy, Valmet.

“The project execution was a success even in such challenging times which demonstrates our capacity and competence to deliver the right quality at the right time.
