In the last 24 month Voith has already installed 37 of its ProTect systems that enable press felt measurements to be taken safely while the machine is running. Another 32 such systems have been ordered by various customers in Europe and overseas.

logo voithMeasurements of the running press fabrics are absolutely indispensable for efficient paper production. They monitor the condition of the felts and from the data conclusion about irregularities are drawn, so that age-related wear or variations in the felt can be reliably identified during operation. Previously, these measurements could only be done manually. For safety reasons, various paper manufacturers and governments have recently started to prohibit these kinds of manual measurements.

With ProTect, Voith has developed a solution to replace the manual measuring work conducted by service personnel. It consists of a stand-alone self-propelled carriage on fixed cross beams that can accommodate conventional manual measuring devices for safe use outside the felt run. Pro-Tect can be mounted even in very confined spaces. The system features a battery and integrated water tank, so it does not have to be connected to a power or water supply.

Hangzhou Nbond Nonwoven Co., Ltd., in Zhejiang province, China, successfully started up a new flushable wipes production line in April 2015. The new production line is the first one on the Chinese market to utilize the innovative wet-laid spunlacing (WLS) concept of the HydroFormer and AquaJet technology. Only three days after start-up, the operating speed of 200 m/min was reached. “We were completely satisfied by the know-how and experience of Voith and Truetzschler. Thanks to the professional ability and excellent professional dedication of their technicians, the project ran both quickly and smoothly,” said Mr. Zhang Jie, General Manager of Nbond.

2015 10 06 130617

With the combined efforts of Nbond, Voith and Truetzschler, it took only five months to complete plant construction, installation and commissioning. The production line uses wet-laid technology with cellulose fiber as raw material for the production of flushable wipes and is Nbond’s 8th line. With a 3,750 mm wire width and 250 m/min design speed, Nbond produces flushable wipes within a basis weight range of 50 to 80 g/m² and will achieve an annual capacity of up to 15,000 tons. The flushable wipes will have excellent dispersibility and are 100% biodegradable.

Voith supplied a key component, the HydroFormer. The HydroFormer concept builds on Voith’s long expertise in the pulp and paper industry. With HydroFormer technology the suspension is highly diluted, so nonwovens can be produced entirely from cellulose, a renewable raw material. In addition to the HydroFormer, Voith delivered the entire stock preparation, the approach flow system, auxiliaries and onsite service. An entire automation and control package was included as well.

Truetzschler supplied the well-known AquaJet technology, a drum dryer and a winder. The components are based on the longstanding know-how of Truetzschler. They were adapted to the needs of the wet-laid spunlacing process.

This resource-efficient production line will play an important role for Nbond in strengthening its market position in China and even on the global non-woven fabric market.

Hangzhou Nbond Nonwoven Co., Ltd, a member of the Robam Group, was founded in 2007. Nbond has become a world-leading enterprise in the wet-laid nonwoven fabrics industry and produces wet-laid nonwoven fabrics on 8 international advanced production lines. Its product range includes wipes for the electronics industry, top-grade materials for beauty and sanitation industries, electrostatic cleaning jacquards, cleansing cotton rags for domestic use, industrial synthetic leather substrates, products for medical care and sanitary use, and sound insulation products for automobiles.

The Archangelsk Pulp & Paper Mill (APPM), the largest producer of packaging papers in Russia, recently put its BM 1 board machine in Archangelsk back into service following an extensive rebuild by Voith. Voith’s scope of supply included the approach flow system, the headbox and a new top wire. The bottom wire was rebuilt by Voith to meet the new requirements.

2015 09 04 154624

The new approach flow system for the top wire consists of IntegraGuard and MultiScreen screens and the associated pumps. The headbox is a MasterJet Pro. The former section was extensively modernized and a new TopFormer F installed to further improve dewatering and quality.

In addition to the machine rebuild, Voith also undertook the basic engineering and supervised commissioning. The rebuild and assembly took just ten weeks and the warranted parameters for the machine were successfully achieved within three months after startup.

Not only did the rebuild of the wet section of the BM 1 improve board quality: following startup of the new semi-chemical pulp mill – and depending on a few other technical measures – the production capacity of the BM 1 will also be increased in the future.

APPM is owned by Pulp Mill Holding GmbH, an Austrian-German Group headquartered in Vienna. The company produces paper, board and corrugated grades in Russia and Ukraine.

Screening plays a key role in the preparation of recovered paper, as it not only removes coarse contaminants but also small and very fine impurities. Papermakers expect low fiber losses, low energy consumption and effective removal of stickies. The BlueLine product range for stock preparation has been developed to meet these requirements. The latest product from the BlueLine family is the C-bar HerculeX screen basket.

2015 08 27 084127

The IntegraScreen and IntegraGuard from Voith are two screening machines for stock preparation and the approach flow system. In combination with rotors and screen baskets, they are adapted to the specific requirements of paper manufacturing.

IntegraScreen: a screening machine concept turned on its head
IntegraScreen is the screening machine for various applications in the stock preparation. With its development of IntegraScreen, Voith has literally turned its screening machine concept upside down: It differs from its predecessors since the intake for the suspension is at the bottom and the outlet for the rejects is at the top. For the first time in this solution, the light contaminants are separated along with the reject via the same pipe. The advantages are obvious: there is no need for additional piping, instrumentation, pumps and valves. A cone in the machine optimizes the flow on the accept side and ensures uniform pressure conditions over the screen basket. This evens out the screen passing velocity and as a result improves the efficiency of contaminant separation.

IntegraGuard: high-quality protection in the approach flow system
IntegraGuard is the screening machine for the approach flow system, where it is particularly important to prevent pulsations, deposits and stringings because they can cause sheet breaks. This is why the IntegraGuard housing is designed to achieve a homogeneous screen passing velocity. The new head piece improves the flow profile in the machine and allows to reduce the rotor speed while maintaining the rotor’s efficiency.

C-bar HerculeX: Hybrid technology makes for a strong screen basket
The C-bar technology used in screen baskets to achieve effective screening with fine slot geometries was first launched on the market by Voith more than 25 years ago and has been constantly refined and improved ever since. The new C-bar HerculeX is regarded as the strongest screen basket on the market to date and can withstand very high loads. It is made of wear-resistant material and is suitable for various applications in pre-screening and fine screening, fractionation, broke and thick stock screening and also in the approach flow system. C-bar HerculeX has very large open screening areas and a special bar geometry. The new screen basket can be tailored to the respective screening requirements and production conditions by varying the widths, slot widths and angles of the bars.

Its exceptionally high stability and strength are thanks to its patented hybrid technology, a reworking of Voith’s clamping technology. An individually customizable chrome layer provides wear protection. The screen basket can be used in all Voith and third party screening machines and is suitable for all paper grades. The best screening results are achieved in combination with a Voith rotor.

MultiFoil rotor and EclipseRotor Voith offers various rotors for its screening equipment, most notably the EclipseRotor and the MultiFoil rotor. The EclipseRotor was developed specifically for screening applications with a high level of contaminants. It is suitable for energy-efficient use in stock preparation and pulp screening and can be installed in Voith screening equipment and in centrifugal pressure screens from other manufacturers. Thanks to its flat but effective foil geometry, the EclipseRotor generates strong suction and achieves a very high stock throughput with very low energy consumption for pulp consistencies up to 5%.

Voith’s MultiFoil rotor was developed for use in the stock preparation and approach flow systems. Its special foil geometry prevents stringings and undesirable pulsations. Optimum suction impulses and a uniform flow profile combined with a low rotor speed help to make the screening process gentle and energy-saving. The MultiFoil rotor can be installed in the two Voith screens, in all vertical screens and in the machines of other manufacturers for centrifugal pressure screens.

Low costs for inventory and maintenance. The screening machines, screen baskets and rotors from the BlueLine product range are easy to operate and easy to maintain. Their spare and wear parts are standardized, allowing life cycle costs to be optimized.

DS Smith, an Italian market leader in containerboard production, has reduced maintenance costs and increased its paper quality and machine productivity thanks to the OnQ Profilmatic control system and OnQ ModuleJet headbox actuators from Voith.

2015 08 11 105517

The company's mill in Lucca, Italy, was experiencing inconsistent paper profiles and wrinkles due to the former actuator control of the existing control system of its PM 2. Voith recommended the OnQ Profilmatic cross profile control software, which is part of its modular and flexible Voith ComCore platform to optimize the shape of the profiles.

“Our existing system was obsolete. The actuator delivery time was a problem and we were spending too much on maintenance," said Stefano Andreotti, Technical and Technology Manager at DS Smith.

"Our production engineers are now very happy with Voith's OnQ Profilmatic. The system automates a process that before was entirely manual. Wrinkles have been reduced, and we are pleased with the deviation of the profiles,” said Andreotti.

The OnQ Profilmatic has the ability to determine the portion of random noise in the measurements. Continuous, dynamic profile mapping allows exact local mapping of the actuator control zones to the measurements and leads to better paper quality.

A major part of the Voith ComCore platform is the OnView information system, which makes all the details of the papermaking process available for analysis. This is the key to continued performance improvements for the machine. With this powerful toolset Voith accompanies DS Smith to achieve further efficiencies on the PM 2.
