The aim of Sofidel's upgrade project was to increase the production capacity of the tissue production line and to improve the final product quality. Both ANDRITZ’ many years of experience in LC-refining and the very short delivery time of just seven weeks were decisive for Sofidel in placing the order with ANDRITZ. The new machine is the fourth Papillon refiner installed in the Sofidel Group.

The ANDRITZ Papillon cylindrical refiner has been successful on the market for 15 years and has proven its fiber development capability in tissue production lines as well as in specialty paper applications. The proven advantages of the ANDRITZ Papillon refiner concept are:

  • Improved fiber development when compared with conventional refiners
  • Enhanced paper properties and reduced energy consumption for the papermaking process
  • Reduction of over 40% in no-load power consumption compared to similar-sized conventional refiners

The Sofidel Group is one of the world market leaders in the production and conversion of tissue paper for hygienic and domestic use, such as toilet paper, napkins, kitchen paper, facials, and handkerchiefs. From its headquarters in Porcari (Lucca), Italy, Sofidel coordinates the activities of 20 companies located in 13 countries throughout Europe and the United States, which produce more than one million tons of paper per year.

International technology Group ANDRITZ saw a solid development of profitability in the first quarter of 2016 despite slight declines in sales and order intake.

andThe situation on the markets served by ANDRITZ basically has not changed compared to 2015. While unchanged good project and investment activity prevails in the PULP & PAPER business area, several projects in HYDRO and METALS have been stopped temporarily or delayed due to uncertain demand.

Based on the business results achieved in the first quarter of 2016, ANDRITZ expects Group sales for 2016 to decrease slightly compared to 2015. At the same time, however, profitability is expected to remain at a solid level.

The key financial figures developed as follows:

  • Sales amounted to 1,285.6 million euros (MEUR) and were thus lower than the reference figure for the previous year (-8.5% versus Q1 2015: 1,404.3 MEUR). All business areas recorded a decline in sales.
  • Order intake, at 1,247.4 MEUR, reached a satisfactory level, however, it was 12.8% below the reference figure of the previous year (Q1 2015: 1,430.6 MEUR). While the PULP & PAPER business area in particular and also SEPARATION were able to increase order intake compared to Q1 2015, HYDRO and METALS saw a significant decline in order intake.
  • Order backlog as of March 31, 2016 amounted to 7,147.6 MEUR, thus decreasing slightly compared to the end of last year (December 31, 2015: 7,324.2 MEUR).
  • Despite the decline in sales, EBITA increased to 83.9 MEUR (Q1 2015: 73.4 MEUR). This is due to the very positive development in the PULP & PAPER and HYDRO business areas.  Thus, profitability of the Group (EBITA margin) increased to 6.5% (Q1 2015: 5.2%).
  • Net income without non-controlling interests increased to 52.5 MEUR (Q1 2015: 44.0 MEUR).

The new drum pulper processes various recycled fiber materials and is designed for a feed capacity of 120 t/d. It has replaced an existing conventional pulper in order to raise the pulp quality for production of premium tissue products. The scope of supply also included engineering services as well as installation supervision, start-up, and commissioning support.

ISMA 2000 produces its environmentally-friendly tissue papers - sold under the name Ismax – from 100% recycled paper, ranging from mixed and sorted office waste and colored ledger to various card and paper board grades as well as packaging and laminated paper. For these raw materials, the reject content to be removed by the pulper ranges from two to 20 percent. The ANDRITZ FibreFlow drum FFD can flexibly handle this wide range of fiber sources at lowest energy consumption and maximum yield.

With the ANDRITZ FibreFlow drum pulper technology, a variety of cheaper waste paper raw material composites can be used, without compromising the performance of pulping and paper production. The new design of the FibreFlow drum pulper type FFD225 enables a reduction of the installed power for the pulping process as well as paper producers to use raw material mixtures from UBC (used beverage cartons) and polyethene-coated papers to OCC (old corrugated containers) and office waste grades.
