As part of ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2015 UPM showcased the Biofore Concept Car – a truly sustainable innovation. The Biofore Concept Car was on display from 30 June until 2 July 2015 at Messe Frankfurt.

“Forests are no longer just a source of timber, paper and pulp. When we look at the forest we see so much more. We see new biomaterials, biofuels and an endless source for truly sustainable innovations,” says Bernd Eikens, Executive Vice President, UPM Paper ENA.

biofore car

Introducing an ecological dimension into car manufacturing

The Biofore Concept Car demonstrates the use of UPM’s innovative bio-based materials in the automotive industry. The majority of components in the Biofore Concept Car that are traditionally made of plastic are replaced by renewable UPM Formi biocomposite and thermoformable UPM Grada wood material. This leads to a significant improvement of the overall environmental performance of car manufacturing. The Biofore Concept Car was designed and manufactured by students from the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

If a component is manufactured from biocomposite instead of plastic, the carbon footprint can decrease by 60%. Thanks to the lightweight and durable materials, the car weighs 150 kg less than vehicles of a comparable size, which also means reduced fuel consumption.

The car is fuelled by wood-based renewable UPM BioVerno diesel, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. UPM BioVerno is suitable for all diesel engines, including the 1.2 litre low-emission diesel engine featured in the Biofore Concept Car.

Continuous development – also in paper manufacturing

“ZELLCHEMING-Expo is an ideal platform to showcase UPM’s Biofore innovations – be it the Biofore Concept Car, modern biocomposites, biodiesel, biochemicals or just our innovative and sustainable paper portfolio,” explains Bernd Eikens.

By introducing UPM Valor, UPM Impresse and UPM ReCat to the market, UPM created new, high quality printing papers specialised on the needs of magazine publishers and advertisers. All performance papers reduce mailing and delivery costs while being more sustainable which increases the competitiveness of our customers.
The papers are ideal for publications and print products that demand premium quality. Thanks to the efficient use of raw materials these innovative papers have lower impact on the environment making UPM one of the leading manufacturers regarding sustainability.

The extensive paper selection of UPM includes publication and office papers as well as speciality papers for all kinds of end uses. UPM is committed to paper and believes in the coexistence of digital and print media. Paper is a true Biofore product, manufactured from renewable and recyclable materials in sustainably managed mills.

UPM Paper - Your Smart Choice

UPM believes in the future of print and its effective coexistence with digital media. Print does not compete with other media channels, but fits in seamlessly.

Performance papers for competitive print products

upm logoBy introducing UPM Valor, UPM Impresse and UPM ReCat to the market, UPM created new, high quality printing papers specialised on the needs of magazine publishers and advertisers. All performance papers reduce mailing and delivery costs while being more sustainable which increases the competitiveness of our customers. The papers are ideal for publications and print products that demand premium quality.

UPM Valor for example is comparable to reference products regarding quality and its characteristics but up to 15% lighter in basis weight. Thanks to the efficient use of raw materials this innovative paper has lower impact on the environment.

“UPM Valor combines our know-how and high quality materials. We took a great step forward in the advancement of our traditional paper products,” explains Product Portfolio Manager Antti Pokkinen.

Other UPM performance papers also distinguish themselves through the combination of high quality and cost efficiency. Due to using little raw materials as well as the special properties of the papers, the environmental footprint is significantly smaller making UPM one of the leading manufacturers regarding sustainability.

“Our performance papers were developed according to existing demand. Printed publications have to keep up with other media products, thus our customers expect cost-efficient paper deliveries,” says Antti Pokkinen.

Always the perfect match for digital printing

The UPM Digi papers cover the whole range of digital end uses since they are available in a variety of categories that were developed for special requirements and printing technologies. By using UPM Digi papers the advantages of digital printing can be fully exploited. They are available woodfree uncoated (WFU) and woodfree coated (WFC), covering a wide spectrum of basis weights starting from 80 to 350 g/m².

“One of our new UPM Digi papers is UPM Digi Fine jet – a completely new paper quality especially created for high-speed inkjet printing. UPM Digi Fine jet is characterized by a quick absorption and fixation of ink, high surface smoothness and an excellent opacity. It is suitable for advertising materials, inserts, mailings, balance sheets, supplements, reports and other official documents,” states Ansgar Reiners, Product Portfolio Manager.

For dry toner applications UPM offers a diverse selection of coated papers, UPM Finesse for example, which can be used for photo books and other high quality products. The product range for woodfree uncoated and recycling papers was expanded by the products of the Digi Fine series.

UPM delivers numerous converting options for the UPM Digi papers, such as a special cutter which guarantees the highest angular and cutting accuracy in various format sizes.

Sustainability – a basis for business success

Publishers, printing houses and advertisers focus on reliable, safe and sustainable products. This includes printed materials. Consumers and readers are highly interested in environmental issues and actively seek for information. Paper is the best example of a Biofore product: It is manufactured using renewable raw materials and therefore sustainable by nature.

UPM will invest EUR 50 million in its Kaukas pulp mill in Lappeenranta, Finland, to further strengthen the mill’s efficiency, competitiveness and optimisation.

2015 06 16 233219

The investment will go towards modernising both pulp drying machines and installing a new baling line. Assembly will take place during a planned shutdown in autumn 2016 and start-up is scheduled for the end of 2016. The investment will benefit the entire Kaukas biorefining mill integrate through increased resource efficiency and operational flexibility.

“Over the past two years we have made focused investments improving the production efficiency of our Pietarsaari, Kymi and Fray Bentos pulp mills. When all the projects are completed, our pulp production capacity will have increased by 10% from 3.3 million tonnes since 2013. The Kaukas investment is yet another example of well-targeted good return investments,” says Anssi Klinga, Senior Vice President, UPM Pulp.

“Our biggest investment is the EUR 160 million expansion of the Kymi mill, which is proceeding well and will be completed in the autumn. The expansion will increase the mill’s production capacity by 170,000 tonnes of bleached softwood and hardwood pulp,” says Klinga.

These investments in the Kymi and Kaukas mills will complete UPM’s strategic decoupling of its pulp and paper businesses. This will enable higher efficiency and separate optimisation of pulp and paper production, while simultaneously maintaining internal synergies at the mills.

The rest of the land is protected or used for forestry-related infrastructure, cattle grazing and other non-plantation operations. All of UPM's forest plantations are certified to FSC® and PEFCTM standards.

Sustainable forestry is one of UPM’s key environmental responsibility areas, and biodiversity is one of the main environmental drivers in the advancement of sustainable forest management practices. Promoting biodiversity is part of everyday forestry and wood sourcing operations as defined in the company’s unique Global Biodiversity Programme.

In Uruguay, UPM’s biodiversity projects include a conservation programme for Yatay palm trees growing on UPM Forestal Oriental's land and a programme to manage native grasslands with the goal of conserving the Capuchino bird. Moreover, as an active member in the New Generation Plantations project initiated by the WWF, UPM will again co-host the second Uruguayan study tour in November this year.

The Fray Bentos pulp mill started operations in 2007 and remains one of the world’s most modern and efficient pulp mills. Its annual production capacity is 1.3 million tonnes of chemical eucalyptus pulp. Besides pulp, the Fray Bentos mill is a significant biomass-based energy producer, its electricity production accounting for 11% of Uruguay’s total energy production. The mill’s wood raw material comes from sustainably managed local plantations.

In Uruguay, UPM has 550 direct employees and it indirectly employs around 3,400 people. UPM Uruguay’s value chain creates altogether 6,400 jobs and its contribution to Uruguay’s GDP is approximately 1.3%.

WWF’s Check-your-paper (CYP) tool is a public database for pulp and paper products with high environmental standards. The CYP method focuses on a limited number of environmental parameters including how well forests supplying fibre are managed, use of recycled fibre, fossil CO2 emissions, waste going to landfills and water pollution from mills.

2015 06 05 131632

UPM has been part of CYP since the very beginning and one of the first companies to rate papers in the tool. The used method is simple but not simplistic and has been developed and fine-tuned by WWF since 2007, in cooperation with scientists, paper buyers, producers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Today, UPM has 23 paper product groups rated in the CYP tool. All of them are third-party verified. The results vary from good to excellent, the majority being very good or excellent.

"UPM has shown the importance it gives to transparency and environmental performance by publicly disclosing the environmental impact of several of its uncoated and coated papers on WWF’s Check Your Paper. WWF invites pulp and paper producers to join WWF Environmental Paper Award 2016 by listing their papers on CYP," states Emmanuelle Neyroumande, Manager, Forest Product Consumption & Footprint, WWF International.

UPM’s customers are increasingly interested in sustainability of papers. UPM offers product declarations and environmental data, like Paper Profiles, for all products as a tool to provide customers with information on the sustainability of products and the supply chain.

“We promote transparency in our activities and consider WWF’s Check-your-Paper as one good way to increase it. The tool helps customers to identify the most environmentally sound paper products. We have cooperated with WWF to develop the tool and this work continues.” says Päivi Rissanen, Director, Environment and Responsibility, UPM Paper ENA.

upm logoUPM has significantly reduced work-related accidents with a three year program called “Step Change in Safety 2012–2014”. UPM’s lost time accident frequency* (LTAF) has decreased by 70% from 15.2 in 2012 to 4.4 in 2014.

The Step Change in Safety 2012–2014 initiative engaged all UPM employees in a joint mission to improve the company’s safety culture and safety performance. The pervasive program renewed the foundations of safety work by shifting focus to preventative measures, such as proactive risk identification and management. Strong management commitment and active participation of employees and contractors have been the keys to success.

As a result, UPM’s global LTAF decreased by a total of 70% from 15.2 in the beginning of 2012 to 4.4 by the end of 2014. The total number of lost time accidents globally decreased from over 550 in 2011 to 155 in 2014.

“We have achieved excellent results and they clearly show that a new safety culture has been adopted throughout the company. All UPMers have contributed to the result and we can all be proud of the achievement,” says Jussi Pesonen, CEO of UPM.

One cornerstone for safety work are UPM safety standards, which were put in place during the Step Change in Safety initiative. The standards define the minimum requirements for safety performance and operations, and they are common to all UPM units around the world. For the next three years, the focus will be in perfecting the local implementation practices.

“The great results from our safety initiative have encouraged us to raise the bar even further. Our first goal was to get our LTAF below 5. Next we are aiming to go below 3,” Jussi Pesonen continues.

Careful induction and job specific safety training play important roles in identifying risks and consequently preventing accidents.

Employees' risk awareness is continuously improved by organising safety training, sharing information on near-miss situations and encouraging employees to report all hazardous situations and safety deficiencies.

In 2015 UPM launches a practice in which all UPM employees will be provided a regular refresher safety training to make sure that all the latest information and practices is in use.

You can read more about UPM safety induction from the UPM Viewpoint blog including UPM’s new safety induction video “STOP”.

upm logoUPM Kymi celebrated the topping out ceremony for its pulp mill production expansion project, KYMI700: the new pulp drying machine, debarking plant and modernisation of the softwood fibre line. A total of around 200 participants are invited in the celebrations including those working on the project and guests.

UPM invests € 160 million into the Kymi pulp mill to strengthen its position in the growing end use sectors of the global pulp market, namely tissue, speciality papers and packaging board. Following this investment, Kymi’s annual pulp production capacity will increase by 170,000 tonnes to 700,000 tonnes of bleached northern softwood and birch pulp.

The investment at Kymi mill will comprise a new pulp drying machine, modernisation of the softwood fibre line, a new debarking plant as well as improvements in the energy balance of the Kymi integrate consisting of pulp and paper mills.

Construction progressing well alongside normal production

The construction work that began in June is on schedule. At the moment, around 150 people are working in different project sites. The current and initial jobs are, among others, laying foundations, steel construction installation, painting, tank and pulp tower installations, as well as demolition work at the softwood fibre line. Machine installation will take place in January. The most significant construction contracts have been given to businesses located in the northern part of the Kymenlaakso region.

"The biggest challenge has been the pulp drying machine. The demolition of the old machine hall, including land construction work and implosions, has been successful, while paper production has been ongoing in the same location.
