After several years of consultation, EU Member States have now adopted criteria for an EU Ecolabel on newsprint paper. UPM has been a key player in negotiations to ensure that the EU Ecolabel could be made available also to its newsprint customers.

“The newsprint criteria give us an excellent opportunity to expand further our already impressive range of EU ecolabelled products. Almost all UPM newsprint papers are expected to fulfill the strict criteria", says Päivi Rissanen, Environmental Director of UPM's Paper Business Group.

The new criteria includes production-related emissions to water and air, the use of energy and chemicals, as well as the requirement for newsprint paper to be composed of a minimum of 70% recycled material and the remaining virgin fibre covered by valid sustainable forest management and chain of custody certificates issued by e.g. FSC or PEFC.

To date almost all UPM copy and graphic papers produced in Europe have been awarded the EU Ecolabel and the company is a clear industry leader with almost 200 paper grades from 15 paper mills approved under the EU Ecolabel scheme. All in all about 8 million tonnes of UPM paper will be able to carry the EU Ecolabel award by end of 2012.

Printed paper products to get their own label

EU Ecolabel criteria for Printed Paper Products were approved in March this year and the final adaptation is expected in the autumn.

“The development of criteria for Printed Products now makes it possible for our customers to fully utilise the logo in their own marketing. They can print the “EU flower” on products such as magazines, books and newspapers which have been printed on EU Ecolabel awarded paper”, explains Rissanen.

The criteria aim to promote the environmental efficiency of de-inkability and recyclability for printed paper products as well as prevention of risks to the environment and to human health related to the use of hazardous substances in printing.

The criteria have been set at levels which ensure that recognition is only given to printed paper products which have a low environmental impact.

UPM recycles all printing paper waste collected at the drupa exhibition in Germany working in close co-operation with Remondis, a leading waste management company.

Printed and unprinted waste paper is collected in containers at drupa and transported to Remondis' baling facility. The bales will be transported to the UPM Hürth mill located close to Düsseldorf, where they will be used as valuable raw material in UPM's paper production.

"At drupa 2012 we will continue our established partnership with Remondis and collect the paper generated during the exhibition. Reusing the valuable wood fibre at our UPM Hürth mill located very close to Düsseldorf makes it possible to minimize also the environmental impacts of transportation. This truly shows one aspect of our Biofore thinking coming to life", says Päivi Rissanen, Environmental Director of UPM Paper Business Group.

Biggest user of recovered paper

Recycling is an essential part of any environmentally-responsible business and core to UPM’s Biofore strategy. With four million tonnes of recovered paper per year, UPM is the world’s largest user of recovered paper in graphic papers. About one third of fibre raw material used in its paper production is recovered paper. UPM's annual consumption of recycled paper would fill the Empire State Building more than three times.

In addition to being the largest user of recovered paper worldwide, UPM seeks to maximise the reuse of recycled materials in all aspects of its business.

To provide sustainable recycling, UPM acts in close partnership with local authorities and industrial partners. UPM delivers efficiency and innovation through long-term working partnerships with logistics and waste management companies, delivering integrated waste management and recycling services to both the public and private sectors.

UPM mills in Hürth (Germany), Chapelle (France), Schwedt (Germany) and Shotton (UK) are all producing paper from 100% recovered paper. Other UPM mills using recovered paper are Augsburg (Germany), Ettringen (Germany), Kaipola (Finland), Schongau (Germany), Plattling (Germany) and Steyrermühl (Austria).

The final round of the “SHOTS Heard Around the World” print simulator-based productivity contest culminates at the drupa exhibition in May.

“Over 150 students from Asia, Europe and North America have been remotely competing at their technical schools and the best students will now meet face-to-face at drupa”, explains Erik Ohls, Senior Adviser from UPM’s Technical Sales.

“The competition is based on solving a series of simulated printing problems in a limited time. The winner will be determined after five 10-minute heats and will be based on who completes the problems to the highest quality and with the lowest production cost.”

Simulation-based training is now the worldwide norm in almost every profession for optimising problem solving skills. UPM has been successfully using printing simulators for several years to train customers and staff to improve their process understanding of printing technology.

The simulators allow the user to see the results of process adjustments on the simulated print copy and the related production cost. UPM works closely with Sinapse Print Simulators, the leader in this field, to implement a unique set of training tools.

The productivity contest encourages the improvement of printing students’ skills globally. The event is co-sponsored by UPM, Printing Industries of America (PIA) and Sinapse.

The final round of this contest will be held on 7th May at 15:00 at the Sinapse Print Stand E64 in Hall 6, close to the UPM stand.

Join us at the SHOTS finals and get a chance to interview the students and to learn more about the unique training programmes.

Donald Duck's Finnish design on UPM paper

UPM has partnered with the Sanoma Magazines Finland to produce a special Design Donald Duck edition as part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme.

What is design today? Donald Duck ponders this fundamental question, which, of course, results in several funny incidents, in a special Donald Duck spring issue. Daily life in Duckburg is seamlessly combined with the history, present day and future of Finnish design in a storyline written by Finnish author and cartoonist Kari Korhonen. New characters that appear in the story alongside the citizens of Duckburg bear a close resemblance to well-known Finnish designers such as Alvar Aalto, Vuokko Nurmesniemi, Stefan Lindfors and Paola Suhonen.

“With printed Donald Duck the reader can escape to Duckburg” says Aki Hyyppä, the editor in chief for Donald Duck Finland at Sanoma Magazines. “The purpose of reading whether it’s high literature or cartoons, is to create a physical experience, offering a break in our hectic everyday life. The added touch of high quality paper creates a feeling that can’t be compared with anything else. A cartoon collection on the book shelf is a pleasure itself”, he continues.

The special Donald Duck edition has upgraded the standard paper grade to highlight this special version. “High quality UPM Finesse was chosen to create a prestigious first impression for the cover and UPM Star matt to enhance the versatile details of the cartoons inside of the magazine“, explains Eeva-Liisa Heinaro, Sales Director, Magazine Publishers and Printers, Finland.

The Design Donald Duck is published in four languages: Finnish, Swedish, English and German. The limited edition special publication is not available through normal sales channels, but Finnish Donald Duck readers can enjoy the design story as part of the 16/2012 issue in  April.

UPM has renewed its UPM DIGI Color jet paper. During the past two years the printing properties of the paper have been improved and now it is possible to achieve even better printing results with low ink amount. UPM DIGI Color jet was initially launched in May 2010.

UPM DIGI Color jet is a special surface treated paper. It is an ideal surface to display invoice information added with some appealing promotional material - an excellent choice for direct mailing, transpromotional and transactional documents in addition to many other colourful mailing documents and books.

UPM DIGI Color jet is developed for dye based inks and it provides high print density and wide colour gamut. High ink drying speed enables fast print-outs without colour-to-colour bleed.

Excellent product for growing markets

“We see growth potential in this product since nowadays there is more promotional material included in the invoices than before. UPM DIGI Color jet is a very competitive product and fulfills the demanding market requirements. Excellent end result is achieved with low ink usage and this means cost-savings for customers. It has optimized optical properties which guarantee low print-through and enable printing of four colour advertisements,” says Arto Kipinä, Sales Operations Director, UPM Label and Postal papers.

UPM DIGI Color jet has EU Ecolabel and it is FSC® or PEFC™ granted.

UPM has partnered with Monocle – a leading global affairs magazine – to produce the Monocle Helsinki City Survey.

Printed on UPM Fine, the Monocle Helsinki City Survey looks at everything from finance/business and logistics, to design/architecture, fashion, culture, aviation/transport, food/hospitality, retail and tourism. Monocle has produced the survey to provide its readers with engaging insight into Helsinki, the World Design Capital 2012.

Monocle editor–in-chief, Tyler Brûlé says “Helsinki is looking to turn ideas into real change. Key to this is a dynamic generation of doers. In each sector they are challenging the modus operandi. It’s these characters we’ve profiled in this city survey – they are the future of Helsinki”.

UPM papers were chosen for good experience in their high qualities both in terms of reproduction and finishing. Monocle always strives to create a unique tactile experience for their readers and the choice was another step in challenging and surprising the readers’ expectations.

“The criteria started with the ‘snap’ of the paper. In other words, how does it feel between forefinger and thumb and does it feel new within the context of the magazine? In both cases, the answer was a firm yes”, elaborates Tyler Brûlé.

"It is a pleasure to be able to collaborate with a frontrunner such as Monocle for this inspiring Survey. Their in-depth commitment to design and print provides a perfect match to UPM's passion to support the success of paper and print", says Thomas Ehrnrooth, Vice President, Marketing and Communications from UPM's Paper Business Group.

The Helsinki City Survey will be published as part of the May 2012 issue of Monocle with design special. UPM has previously co-operated with Monocle for Monocle Finland Survey 2010.

UPM clarifies the strategy of its Timber and Living business areas and plans to restructure the production operations in Finland. The plan includes a possible closing of the production of Kajaani sawmill and Heinola and Aureskoski further processing plants by the end of 2012. UPM will begin co-determination negotiations with the employees in Kajaani, Aureskoski and Heinola, and later during April-May with the employees in the Finnish staff functions. Altogether 275 employees are included in the negotiations. Sale is an alternative option for closure of the production units.

”The profitability of the sawmills and further processing units located furthest from our integrated mills has been weak for a long time and has not turned permanently profitable despite the earlier restructuring measures. High log price and over capacity in the end-product markets have weakened the situation,” says the President of UPM’s Energy and Pulp Business Group Heikki Vappula.

”Our plan is to continue sawmilling and further processing in Finland in four locations, Pietarsaari (Alholma), Pori (Seikku), Juupajoki (Korkeakoski) and Lappeenranta (Kaukas), which are close to our pulp and paper mills using big volumes of wood. Saw mills and further processing plants operating close to pulp and paper mills have a central role in UPM’s wood sourcing supply chain as their by-products are used in the production of pulp, paper and energy.”

”The Kajaani, Heinola and Aureskoski production units have good foundations to succeed as independent units what makes the sale of the units a considerable alternative,” says Vappula.

As part of the clarification of the Timber business strategy, UPM will assess the operational preconditions and role of the Pestovo saw mill and planing mill in Russia by the end of 2012.

The Aigrefeuille further processing plant in France and the Steyrermühl sawmill in Austria will continue their operations as before and are excluded from the above mentioned plan.

The plans have no effect on UPM’s current customer commitments or other valid contracts.

In the second quarter of 2012, UPM will book impairment charges of approximately EUR 35 million and make a provision for restructuring costs of approximately EUR 10 million.

The strategy development of UPM Timber and Living business areas will proceed in UPM’s internal work groups. Mr Anssi Klinga has been appointed the new head of the businesses, Senior Vice President, UPM Timber and Living Business Area. He has a long experience of international management positions and he most recently held the position of the CEO of Vaahto Group.
