SCA comments on reports in Swedish media regarding the joint venture Productos Familia S.A.
The Colombian competition authority is conducting an anti-trust inquiry that includes the company Productos Familia S.A. The company is listed on the Colombian Stock Exchange. SCA owns 50% of Productos Familia S.A.
“Free and undistorted competition is an important cornerstone in every society and for every business operation. We take a very serious view of all cases in which our business is called into question. In this particular area, SCA has a comprehensive, ongoing program for training employees and ensuring adherence to competition rules,” says Kersti Strandqvist, Senior Vice President, Corporate Sustainability, SCA.
SCA conducts operations in more than 100 countries and, in many cases, holds leading market positions. It is natural that SCA, similar to other major international companies, is the subject of investigations by such institutions as competition authorities in various contexts and for various reasons.
At present, competition authorities are reviewing the joint venture Familia’s operations in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, as well as SCA’s wholly owned businesses in Chile, Spain, Poland and Hungary. In all instances, SCA and/or joint ventures is/are cooperating with the authorities and providing the requested information. SCA has assessed that the ongoing inquiries will not have a material financial impact.

SCA and CEO Magnus Groth inaugurate first production facility in India
SCA, a leading global hygiene and forest products company, has inaugurated its first manufacturing facility for personal care and tissue products in India. SCA has been active in the Indian market since late 2013.
The facility, which produces baby diapers and tissue for the Indian market, is located in Pune in the central Indian state of Maharastra. Baby diapers are sold under the Libero brand and tissue under the global leading Tork brand.
“The low penetration of hygiene products and the large population in India provide the potential for future growth. The plant in Pune will enable us to further leverage the growth potential in India. The investment is in line with our strategy of strengthening SCA’s presence in emerging markets. Meeting customers and employees and understanding the markets we operate in is very important to me, why this trip, my first as President and CEO of SCA, means a great deal to me,” says Magnus Groth, President and CEO of SCA.
As previously announced, SCA has invested SEK150m in the plant in India.
“The team in India has done a very good job and last year they launched our biggest information and educational campaign ever. In 2014, we reached 2,300 doctors, 5,000 hospitals and clinics and 1.2 million mothers and babies, providing them with parental guidance. We also communicated the importance of good hand hygiene to more than eight million people,” says Magnus Groth.
“SCA has shown deep commitment and has invested time and effort to understand the Indian market and consumer needs as we enter a new phase. With this new production facility, SCA underlines its long-term strategy for our business in India,” says Cecilia Edebo, Managing Director of SCA in India.

In connection to a Board meeting held on Tuesday 10th Feb 2015, it is announced that Jan Johansson will step down as President and CEO of SCA.
The last months I have spent a large part of my time on the ongoing audits related to SCA. As President and CEO, it has been very stimulating to lead SCA’s journey of change since 2007, Jan Johansson concludes.
SCA’s Board writes in a joint announcement:
The Board regrets, but understands and respects that Jan Johansson cannot effectively lead SCA under the current conditions. The Board would like to emphasize that there is no new information related to the ongoing audits. The Board has continued great confidence in Jan Johansson.
As President and CEO, Jan Johansson has in a very competent and value creating way led SCA during an important and successful journey of change for growth and innovation. Now we have a platform for global expansion. The Board would like to extend their warmest thanks for his valuable contributions as President and CEO.

Andreas Fall Awarded 2015 Alf de Ruvo Scholarship
The 2015 Alf de Ruvo scholarship, worth SEK 500,000, has been awarded to Dr. Andreas Fall for his comprehensive mapping of colloid chemistry interactions in nanocellulose systems, which may contribute to the development of entirely new materials.
The Alf de Ruvo Memorial Foundation awards scholarships to researchers within the sphere of cellulose-fibre-based materials. The amount of each scholarship is SEK 500,000. The foundation was formed in 2000 with funds donated in memory of Alf de Ruvo (1938–2000), Licentiate of Engineering and Executive Vice President of SCA.
Through experiments, the 2015 Alf de Ruvo scholarship winner Andreas Fall has shown which factors that control the surface potential of nanoscale cellulose, and how, by controlling the surface potential, the cellulose nanofibrils can be oriented, so strong continuous fibres can be produced. Andreas has also managed to produce fibril reinforced composites of polymethylmethacrylate by checking the gel formation of nanoscale cellulose.
This work has deepened our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that will contribute to the development of entirely new material types such as foams, composites and reconstituted cellulose fibres based on nanocellulose.
“My vision is to in future work be able to orient and modify fibrils so that they may be used in, for example, oriented water-absorbing foams, batteries, super strong composites or ultra-capacitors”, says Andreas.
Andreas Fall currently works at the Environmental and Material Chemistry Department at Stockholm University. His new task is to utilize his colloidal knowledge to develop lightweight and mechanically robust porous materials based on cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) with improved fire retardency. A potential application is thermal isolation, for example in house walls and in electronic components. A suitable research environment for Andreas’ continued work is with Professor Christopher Weder at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, which this scholarship makes possible.
Andreas Fall was born in Västerås, Sweden, 1981. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Biotechnology from Chalmers University of Technology, and achieved his Ph.D. in Fibre and Polymer Science 2014 from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), where Professor Lars Wågberg was his main supervisor.
The scholarship was awarded today at a ceremony in Stockholm in conjunction with the Ekman Days conference sponsored by the Swedish Association of Pulp and Paper Engineers.
About Alf de Ruvo
Alf de Ruvo (1938-2000) was well-known and respected within the forest and paper industry. He held several leading positions, including Deputy CEO of SCA. He was also the Chairperson of FPIRC the Forest Products Industrial Research College at KTH. He carried out broad research within the field of cellulose fibre-based materials and contributed to the development of world class technical paper research. Within the packaging field he worked with the mechanical properties of paper and their importance for conversion and final use.
The Alf de Ruvo’s Memorial Foundation was established in 2000 with funds donated in his memory. Its purpose is to support forestry industry education and research activities that benefit technical and scientific progress within the industry.
The scholarships are appointed by the members of the Board of the Foundation in consultation with a research council. There is no application process.
