NASH vacuum pumps for the PM 7 in Dunaujvaros
Gardner Denver Nash Germany supplied the complete vacuum system for dewatering in the forming and press sections of the new PM7 paper machine in Dunaujvaros. This technology has already proven itself in every other paper machine within the Hamburger Group, with robustness, efficiency and flexibility that guarantee the highest operational reliability.
On the new PM7 in Dunaujvaros, nine NASH 2BE3 vacuum pumps are used. Each pump is driven by a motor equipped with a frequency converter, allowing the rotational speed to be set to exactly suit the actual process conditions. This causes the vacuum pressure to adapt to process conditions as well. Additionally, three centrifugal fans for the low-vacuum scavenge points in the forming section have been included. As a result, the vacuum system provides the greatest flexibility at optimum efficiency.
For the plant operator, the advantages of a NASH liquid ring vacuum system were obvious:
- An extremely robust system: overload safe and resistant to process failures
- Very high overall efficiency, particularly in conjunction with optimum control
- Optimum felt dewatering through the volumetric operating principle of the liquid ring vacuum pump - the scavenge pressure adjusts automatically to suit the felt permeability
- Scavenge-side liquid carry-over with low fiber content is not a problem for the NASH pumps
- Rotation speed control offers the potential of high energy savings
- Low specific power requirements
- Low noise emissions due to low peripheral speeds of the vacuum pump
- Future system adaptation, without influencing other scavenge points, is easily done by changing the rotation speed of individual vacuum pumps
- High operational safety, even if individual vacuum pumps are deactivated
- Very low service and maintenance costs
Confidence in more than 100 years of know-how accumulated by the market leader in the paper industry
With the decision to use NASH vacuum pumps, the plant operator also made a decision for an innovative, environmentally friendly and economical attractive solution.

European paper industry calls for wood supply in line with EU policies
“Use of wood must have the same criteria of sustainability and efficiency whether it is used for paper manufacturing, furniture or energy,” stated Teresa Presas, CEPI Managing Director, at the Forest Protection Conference of the EU Presidency in Spain that closed today. “Forest protection, including biodiversity, must take into account on the one hand a EU raw material policy and external economic policy, and, on the other hand, environmental policy and energy policy,” she concluded.
When assessing environmentally harmful subsidies, the financial support to the use of biomass for renewable energy must be analysed in the light of its energy efficiency and the sustainability of its production and procurement. Wood for manufacturing is crossing the oceans into Europe because European wood is being burnt for energy.
CEPI – the Confederation of European Paper Industries - is very keen in contributing to a dialogue where all these complex aspects would be clearly laid out. Positive things are happening in the sector, but the industry needs clarity and consistency, it needs reconciling different policies related to forests and wood.
Already in 2007, a McKinsey study revealed that the implementation of the 20% target for renewable energy in 2020 will potentially generate a gap of wood supply of 200 - 250 million cubic meters. This is equivalent to the annual amount of wood needed for the whole European paper and wood working industries.
At this very day wood and paper mills had to stop production for lack of raw material, mainly due to absence of EU action on raw materials or conflicting policies. The future of the European paper chain is at risk.
The Green Paper on forest protection recently published by the European Commission and presented at the conference states clearly the need to optimise a sustainable wood supply, and proposes the development of new internal sources of wood. Making more wood available in a sustainable way is the only way to ensure there is enough raw material to keep industry running. The European paper industry is an expert in sourcing wood responsibly and in a sustainable manner.
Europe is expecting the EU2020 strategy as the direction for the next 10 years. The way forward must use an integrated approach of different policies and different needs, in order to secure our raw materials and to take Europe into a smart, sustainable, and inclusive economy.

Judge dismisses Newfoundland's claims against AbitibiBowater
Newfoundland and Labrador's environmental claims against insolvent AbitibiBowater Inc. have been stayed by a Quebec judge, removing a likely hurdle to the company's restructuring process.
The claims, which would have required AbitibiBowater to clean up five sites that it owns or once owned, could have cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Newfoundland wanted them treated like claims from other creditors under the Company Creditors Arrangement Act and therefore eligible for available money.
In dismissing Newfoundland and Labrador's motion, Quebec Superior Court Justice Clement Gascon urged both sides to find "an appropriate forum" in which to settle their differences. The company has been under creditor protection since last April.
