Finland's June industrial output soared 14.5 percent compared with a year earlier, boosted by a nearly 31-percent gain in its forestry and paper sector, official data showed Tuesday.

Compared to May, Finland's industrial output jumped 2.1 percent, according to figures from Statistic Finland adjusted for seasonal variations.

In May, the Nordic country saw its industrial production grow 13.2 percent on a year-on-year basis and 1.9 percent compared to April, the agency said, pointing out that "apart from a downswing in February, seasonally adjusted output has been rising since October."

Export-reliant Finland, which was hard-hit by the global financial crisis as demand for its key products -- paper and mobile telephones -- plunged, saw growth in all its main industries in June.

Output rose most in the forestry industry, up 30.9 percent compared to June 2009, and in the metals sector, up 14.5 percent, Statistics Finland said.

The electricity and electronics sectors, including the world's leading mobile phone maker Nokia, meanwhile saw slower growth of just 0.8 percent compared to the same month in 2009, it added.

Finland, which suffered more from the financial crisis than its Scandinavian neighbours, has shown signs of recovery but slipped back into recession in the first quarter, with the latest government estimates foreseeing only modest 1.5-percent growth for all of 2010.

Joint paper conferences in Stockholm 2012

Innventia and KTH Royal Institute of Technology arranges a joint conference for the 8th International Paper and Coating Chemistry Symposium and the International Paper Physics Conference in Stockholm, Sweden, June 10-14, 2012.
The 2012 International Paper and Coating Chemistry Symposium is the eigth in a series of meetings that started in 1988. The symposium will cover the latest developments in the fields of paper chemistry, coating chemistry and nanotechnology for the paper industry.

The 2012 International Paper Physics Conference is the tenth in a series of conferences that started in 1971. The conference will focus on the physical properties of materials and structures from wood fibres, such as paper, board, biocomposites and nanostructured materials. The programme will contain presentations on the latest experimental and theoretical findings as well as on advanced physical simulations.

The two conferences will be arranged together as a way for the paper and coating chemistry and the paper physics communities to interact and to offer the industry an insight into the latest developments in these fields.
Both fundamental and applied contributions are welcomed to these conferences.

Details about the programmes will be made available in the beginning of 2011.

NewPage Corporation today launched OptiLabel HB, a 54 lb high performance general purpose label paper for North American and International pressure sensitive markets.

With a history based in manufacturing papers for the pressure sensitive market, the product development team at NewPage set its sights on developing a new label facestock that maintains a premium appearance, and consistently performs well and in all aspects of production, from pressure sensitive laminating and label printing, to die cutting and high speed label application.

"Our experience in this market provides us with an in-depth understanding of the needs throughout the entire supply chain," said David Diekelman, executive director of sales and business development for specialty papers. "Pressure sensitive converters want stunning label graphics for their brand owner customers, delivered on a North American sourced label paper that meets their stringent quality standards and maximizes operational efficiencies.  OptiLabel HB delivers on all of these key objectives."

This product is manufactured on the No. 3 paper machine, one of three machines, at the NewPage Escanaba, Michigan, mill, a fully integrated pulp and paper manufacturing facility. The state-of-the-art machine was recently converted to manufacture release liner and label facestock papers for the pressure sensitive industry. With a machine trim of 262 inches, the No. 3 paper machine is ideal for serving the unique requirements of the pressure sensitive industry.

OptiLabel HB joins NewPage's other label facestock papers, including Sterling® Ultra C1S, Oxford™ HB, OptiPrime™ Family, OptiTherm™ and UniTherm™. When combined with NewPage's release liner paper offerings, this creates the most comprehensive pressure sensitive paper portfolio in North America.

North American Wood Fiber Review

Attached please find a sample copy of the North American Wood Fiber Review (NAWFR), which we believe you will find helpful in your analysis of relevant developments within the forest industry in North America.

The NAWFR has tracked wood fiber markets in all major regions of the US and Canada for almost 30 years. It is the only publication that covers both the pulpwood and biomass markets in North America. The report includes prices and market commentary for 15 regions on the continent, and is an essential source for anyone that needs to track pulpwood, wood chips and biomass prices in the largest and most dynamic wood fiber market in the world.

Global pulpwood and biomass-market reporting is included in the 50-page publication, the Wood Resource Quarterly. This report, established in 1988, has readers in over 25 countries and tracks sawlog, pulpwood, lumber and pellet prices in key regions around the world. Also included are regular updates with the latest developments in international timber, pulp, lumber and biomass markets.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about our forest products publications.

252 exhibitors from 18 countries presented their products and services on an area of about 8,000 square metres. Despite of the tense economic situation, the exhibitor participation as well as the total stand space declined only of about 12 percent which is less than predicted before. With 36 percent, the number of foreign exhibitors achieved nearly the level of the previous year.

3,114 visitors attended the event on three days. In comparison to 2009, this is a positive growth of 5 percent. The number of foreign visitors remained by over 24 percent.

The lectures programme dealt with current and trend-setting topics offering the opportunity to intensive discussions. The event was completed by the traditional ZELLCHEMING Summer Evening as well as by the VDMA and Finland Reception.

ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2010 underlined again their high status within the pulp and paper industry.

The online exhibitor list on www.zellcheming-expo.de still provides a search for products and contact data of this year’s exhibitors.

Next year’s ZELLCHEMING-Expo, the leading yearly event of the pulp and paper industry in Europe, takes place from 28 to 30 June 2011 in Wiesbaden.

Imerys announces the signing of an agreement with the Brazilian group Vale to acquire its 86.2% stake in the Brazilian company Pará Pigmentos S.A. (PPSA), as well as mining rights in Pará State for a total price of approximately USD 70 million.

Through this operation, Imerys is enhancing its Brazilian resources with a kaolin for paper deposit, a conversion unit and logistic capacities – a pipeline and harbor terminal – located near its Rio Capim Caulim Pigments for Paper industrial activities. This operation will enable the business group to secure its supply of white pigment for global paper and packaging markets and to control its long-term mining costs more effectively.

The acquisition, financed by available resources, was settled on July 26, 2010. It will be consolidated in the Group’s accounts as from August 1, 2010.
