Unipak Tissue Mill in Lebanon: the professionalism of A.Celli Paper’s Customer Service for a rewinder like new in just four days.
At the beginning of this year, A.Celli Paper concluded an important negotiation with the Paper Making Division of the international Group Indevco for an upgrade of the slitting section of the rewinders present in their tissue plants in North Africa.
Among the interventions scheduled in the two companies part of a world-renowned group: one on the Lebanese plant at Unipak Tissue Mill, and two in Egypt, at Interstate Paper Industries.
In October 2015, a team from A.Celli Paper’s Customer Service department, in collaboration with the mill’s specialized staff, dismantled the slitting unit in just four days of machine downtime and two days of product testing, allowing the customer to resume standard production with no complications or delays, concluding the first of three interventions on the rewinder in Lebanon with excellent results.
“We are very enthusiastic about the professionalism with which the A.Celli Paper technicians handled the intervention at Unipak Tissue Mill, allowing us to quickly resume our normal production regime”, stated the customer, expressing his gratitude and recognition during his visit to Miac, “and we are very pleased with this upgrade that permitted us to once again attain an optimal quality level of the slitting section, improving the performance of the rewinder and consequently of the entire line.”
This latest endeavour confirms how the A.Celli Paper Customer Service department represents one of the flagships of the Lucca company, that in the next few days will – with the experience and expertise that have always distinguished it – be involved in another two interventions on the Egyptian plants scheduled for November. And once again, its efforts are sure to result in a satisfied customer.
UNIPAK Tissue Mill, based in Halat, Lebanon, manufactures virgin and recycled parent jumbo tissue rolls that could be converted to facial tissue, toilet tissue, table napkins and household towels. Established in 1995, UNIPAK Tissue Mill is a member of INDEVCO Paper Making, a division of INDEVCO Group.
INDEVCO Paper Making, a division of INDEVCO Group, operates four manufacturing companies in Lebanon, Egypt, and the U.S., serving tissue converters and corrugated board producers in Africa, Europe, Asia, North and South America. The tissue plants, Interstate Paper Industries in Egypt and Unipak Tissue Mill (UTM) in Lebanon, manufacture 88,000 MT/year of virgin and recycled tissue parent reels. The paper plants, Interstate Paper and United Corrstack in the U.S., manufacture 500,000 MT/year of recycled mediums and kraft linerboards to corrugated converting manufacturers.
$670 billion global packaging industry set for continued growth fuelled by innovation
Pöyry and Stora Enso detail packaging trends at annual Investors Breakfast in London
Executives from Pöyry Management Consulting and Stora Enso detailed the drivers behind a buoyant packaging market that is due to see growth across all materials.
Pöyry Management Consulting selected the Future of Packaging theme for its annual Investors Breakfast held at Stationers’ Hall in London. The packaging sector has enjoyed stable growth for the past two decades, has proven to be largely recession proof, enjoys an optimistic outlook for the years ahead and generates attractive returns on private equity investment.
Jarkko Sairanen, President at Pöyry Management Consulting, said, “Packaging is a $670 billion market and we are seeing positive growth across all packaging materials – this makes it a very exciting and dynamic industry at the moment. This truly global industry is performing well globally – and very well in the Asia Pacific region in particular due to the link between demand and population growth. The other drivers of this vast industry are interlinked and complex but include retail structures and competition, consumer behavior, materials and technology, cost, sustainability and regulation. It is a pleasure to bring together investors and industry figures at our event to discuss these issues in depth.”
Special industry guest Jari Latvanen, Executive Vice President, Head of Consumer Board at Stora Enso, delivered a presentation informed by his FMCG background and understanding of consumer purchasing behavior and trends. He identified the consumers as the key driver for both growth and change, and linked the brand owners and Stora Enso responses to the observed consumer behavior.
Latvanen said, “The future is now. At Stora Enso we believe that everything that’s made with fossil-based material today can be made from a tree tomorrow. There are some exciting innovations taking place in this area such as micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC). With MFC, you can make high-quality packaging that is lighter and more durable from less raw materials. You’ll get more for less, without compromising on quality.
“The demand for more paperboard packaging from consumers is also clear and this technology helps us to do more to match it. We work across the value chain to understand consumers who are increasingly conscious of what goes into their food and how that is packaged and delivered. Brands can no longer ignore this. We need a 360 degree view of the product.”
Sairanen was joined by fellow Pöyry consultants David Powlson and Outi Juntti who added additional perspectives on the forces shaping the future of packaging such as sustainability, and the need for packaging producers to continuously maintain the balance between cost, quality and functionality as well introduce cutting –edge technologies such as RFID.
Managing Director of Pöyry Capital, Cele Moncayo-Quiros analysed packaging as an asset class and covered the financial responses from the public and private equity markets to the growth of packaging. On the private equity side, he explained how some packaging companies were being broken up for IPOs and divestitures and that these investments were generating returns in the range of 30-70% for the private equity funds. Pitfalls of packaging investments and observed M&A packaging mega trends were also outlined.

ANDRITZ to supply equipment for SCAʼs Östrand pulp mill, Sweden
International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order from SCA to supply production technologies and equipment for the extension of SCAʼs Östrand pulp mill in Timrå, Sweden. Start-up is scheduled for the second quarter of 2018. The order is expected to enter into force in the next few weeks.
The scope of supply, with a high manufacturing portion in Sweden, includes wood yard equipment designed for cold climates, with debarking drums and HHQ chippers; a pulp dryer with innovative, energy-saving technologies that substantially reduce the mill’s operating costs, including a boiler exhaust energy recovery system, fine screening, a twin wire dewatering system, sheet dryer, cutter, and two balling lines; a major upgrade of the white liquor plant with new recausticizing machinery and a capacity increase of the existing lime kiln; and extension of the recovery boiler, which was supplied by ANDRITZ in 2006.
The mill expansion is one of the largest industrial investments in Sweden and the largest ever in northern Sweden. SCA Östrand will double its annual production capacity from 430,000 to 900,000 tons and become the largest mill in the world for softwood kraft pulp. About half of the production volume will be used for SCA’s own manufacturing of publication papers and hygiene products, while the remainder will be sold to external tissue producers to meet the growing demand for softwood kraft pulp.

Packaging growth drives up consumption while emerging regions lead growth prospects, according to Smithers Pira
A new report published by Smithers Pira this month examines the market for functional and barrier coatings for paper and board packaging, which is expected to reach over $7.1 billion by 2020.
According to new report The Future of Functional and Barrier Coatings for Paper and Board Packaging to 2020, sustained growth in demand for paper-based packaging materials is stimulating demand for functional and barrier coatings. Total demand is expected to increase from 2.4 million tonnes of material in 2014 to over 3.2 million tonnes by 2020, with the market value growing at 5% annually (in constant 2014 terms) from nearly $5.4 billion to over $7.1 billion over the period.
This will be particularly evident in the emerging markets of Africa, Asia and South/Central America, with the unrest in the Middle East casting a cloud over otherwise good growth in this region as well. Demand in North America will lose some market share to these regions, especially Asia, while Europe should maintain its position in the market over the review period.
“At a macro-economic level, urbanisation, population growth, ageing populations and the growth of the emerging economies are all exerting varying degrees of stimulus on the demand for coatings,” said Stephen Harrod, author of the report.
“Changes in retail infrastructure in the emerging regions are opening up new opportunities for packaging generally and consequently for the coating industry.”
In total, over 30% of all paper-based packaging carries some form of functional or barrier coating, ranging from 100% of liquid packaging board to just 7% of corrugated materials. This rises to more than 45% of food packaging, with a third of beverage packs and a fifth of non-food materials carrying these coatings.
The $5 billion functional and barrier coating industry is turning green, with the need for recyclability being driven at all levels, from legislative and regulatory requirements through to consumer perceptions and pressure groups, and key technological breakthroughs are making their presence felt. In addition, consumer trends such as increasing demand for smaller pack sizes provides a stimulus for the coatings market, as more and smaller packs present a greater surface area for coating than the fewer and larger packs they replace.
Extrusion polymers, which include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (Nylon) and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PETr), show the best prospects and will absorb the lion’s share of the anticipated growth in this market, moving from a 61% share of 2014 volumes to some 63.5% of the projected 2020 market. This will be driven largely by solid growth in demand for liquid packaging board, coupled with strong growth in demand for these coatings from non-food applications, though from a low base.
The Future of Functional and Barrier Coatings for Paper and Board Packaging to 2020 provides an in-depth analysis of the market forces driving growth and offers a comprehensive overview of the industry for raw material suppliers, product managers and engineers, packaging converters and other key personnel in the packaging supply chain.
The Future of Functional and Barrier Coatings for Paper and Board Packaging to 2020 is available for £4,200. For more information, please contact:

Global Forest and Paper Industry Releases Policy Statement on Climate Change
The International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) has just released its statement on climate change ahead of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change meeting (COP21) in Paris, France. The statement presents the contributions of forests and the forest products industry to the mitigation of global climate change and calls on governments to recognize these contributions. The full statement is available at: http://bit.ly/1MPD7ax.
The ICFPA will elaborate on the forest products industry’s efforts at a COP21 side-event – “Assessing transparency and ambition in the land use and forestry sector”, held at the EU Pavilion on December 1 at 2:30 pm. The side-event will be hosted by the ICFPA and the EU Joint Research Centre.
“Forests and the global forest products industry have a key role in helping to mitigate climate change. A low carbon economy has to consider the forest industry as a contributor to climate solutions”, said Marco Mensink, Director General of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). “With this policy statement, we are encouraging national governments to recognize and foster all positive contributions that forests and forest products provide in combating climate change.”
The industry has made significant contributions to mitigate climate change. In addition to greenhouse gas (GHG) removals and stocking carbon in products, ICFPA members have achieved an impressive drop in their GHG emissions intensity: 5 percent since 2010/2011 and 17 percent since the 2004-2005 baseline year, as shown in the ICFPA 2015 Sustainability Progress Report (2013 data).
The statement calls on governments and the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to recognize sustainable forest management and reforestation activities for their contribution to the global climate effort, as well as the recognition of the efforts and achievements of the forest products industry to mitigate climate change, including the carbon neutrality of biomass harvested from sustainably managed forests and the need to provide for market-based mechanisms capable of valuing mitigation actions to incentivize the industry’s potential contribution.
The ICFPA’s statement is the latest in a series of policy statements underwritten by its members associations. All ICFPA policy statements are available at icfpa.org/resource- centre/statements
The ICFPA serves as a forum of global dialogue, co-ordination and co-operation. Together, ICFPA members represent over 90 percent of global paper production and more than half of global wood production. For more information, visit icfpa.org

Resolute Announces Reinstatement of FSC Certification in Ontario
Resolute Forest Products Inc. (NYSE: RFP) (TSX: RFP) has announced the reinstatement of its Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certificate for the Black Spruce/Dog River-Matawin forest in Northwestern Ontario. This reinstatement further confirms Resolute's status as one of the largest holders of FSC forest management certification in Canada and all of North America.
The certificate had been temporarily suspended in January 2014 following an audit by Rainforest Alliance. In keeping with the FSC process, Resolute has since successfully undergone two rigorous audits, which confirmed that the company is in compliance with the FSC standard. A Corrective Action Verification Audit was carried out in June 2015 and a new Annual Surveillance Audit was completed in September 2015. The results of this successful Annual Surveillance Audit were released today by Rainforest Alliance.
"Receiving confirmation that our certificate has been reinstated is welcomed news," said Richard Garneau, Resolute's president and chief executive officer. "This outcome is due in no small part to the diligence of our forestry team in Northwestern Ontario, and to the support of First Nations and a diversity of forest stakeholders, including local communities, unions, and anglers' and hunters' associations, to name a few."
"Our forestry management practices were already in compliance with the legal and regulatory frameworks of Ontario, which are among the most stringent in the world. We now have the confirmation that they also meet the requirements of the FSC standard," added Garneau.
"As we look forward as a company, however, we are concerned with the number of challenging issues currently facing FSC and its membership. These include the adoption of Motion 65, which aims to protect intact forest landscapes and its adaptation to the Canadian specific circumstances; the interpretation of Environment Canada's woodland caribou conservation strategy; the merging of all four Canadian FSC standards into a single one while simultaneously introducing a long list of new indicators; and several other issues. We recognize the considerable efforts of FSC and its membership to address these complex issues and Resolute will continue to actively take part in these efforts. We hope that in doing so, the impact on those whose livelihoods depend on the forest will be taken into consideration in a meaningful way."
Considering the seriousness of the issues, the company is concerned about the viability of FSC certification in the Canadian boreal forest, as are other companies. Until significant progress is made in addressing these matters, Resolute will work to maintain its existing FSC forest management certificates where possible, but will not pursue new certification.
Resolute is committed to sustainable forest management, and 100% of woodlands managed by the company are independently certified to one or more of the three internationally-recognized responsible forest management standards in use in Canada – Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®), Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and FSC.

ANDRITZ receives follow-up order for paper machine rebuild from Cartiere Modesto Cardella, Italy
Following the successful rebuild and start-up of the wet section of the paper machine PM4 in 2010, international technology Group ANDRITZ has received a follow-up order from Cartiere Modesto Cardella to rebuild PM3 in Lucca, Italy. Start-up is scheduled for the end of 2016.
The scope of supply comprises an ANDRITZ PrimeFlow TW two-layer headbox with PrimeProfiler F dilution water control and PrimeForm TW gap former. The PM3 has a design speed of 1,200 m/min and produces fluting, testliner, and corrugated medium with a basis weight range of 80-150 gsm. The raw material is 100% waste paper.
The ANDRITZ design provides innovative, high dewatering performance for the production of corrugated base paper grades with minimum two-sidedness, thus there is as little difference as possible between the surface quality of the wire side and the surface quality of the top side of the paper web. The driving factors for Cartiere Modesto Cardellaʼs rebuild are significant improvements in paper quality and runability.
