emtec Electronic at RosUpack 2015

Innovative Tools to Optimize Production and Converting Processes

emtec Electronic looks back to a successful exhibition week at the RosUpack 2015

The company emtec Electronic GmbH attended the Russian „RosUpack 2015“ in June in Moscow. In the red emtec corner in hall 2 of the exhibition, visitors were able to talk to specialists from emtec in Germany and from the representative company Sigma Micron in Russia. In particular, producers and converters of paper and board as well as suppliers of chemicals, glue, coating color, printing ink, but also institutes can indeed be very well supported by the emtec measuring instruments.

2015 06 26 094945

In the converting process of paper and board sometimes problems occur in the gluing, coating and printing process, but the reason is unclear, as the specifications are according to standard testing instruments. Nobody knows if it is due to the quality of the paper or the glue, coating color or printing ink.

The company emtec developed a method to find out the reason. In Moscow one of the solutions was presented - the EST12 Surface & Sizing Tester. In order to predict the interaction between paper or board and the liquid during coating, printing and gluing, the device characterizes the surface parameters of paper and board, which are relevant for the converting process, in the process-relevant time. Its application leads to the optimization of the production and converting processes and therefore to reducing the costs and achieving respectively improving the quality of the product.

Problems in the quality of the finished product can also be caused by non-optimal process control in the wet end area of paper and board production. emtec Electronic has presented two essential measuring devices for the optimization of wet end area: the CAS Charge Analyzing System for determining the particle charge and the FPA Fiber Potential Analyzer for measuring the Zeta Potential of fibers in the suspension. Both help to guarantee and improve the targeted properties of finished products and to reduce the consumption of chemicals.

poyFinnpulp Oy has awarded Pöyry with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) assignment for a planned pulp mill project in Kuopio, Finland. The assessment program includes Finnpulp Oy's plans on the various implementation alternatives for the mill project and a plan on the environmental impacts to be assessed. In addition to the construction and operation of the pulp mill itself, the assessment procedure will cover the essential auxiliary activities required by the mill such as road and rail connections and the power transmission network.

Finnpulp Oy is planning to realise the world's largest softwood pulp mill investment in Kuopio, Finland. The total amount of the investment is EUR 1.4 billion. The basis for all Finnpulp operations is to become the most efficient and modern producer of softwood pulp in the world. Producing market pulp, the mill is scheduled to start operation by the end of 2019.

The annual production capacity of this pulp mill, designed specifically to produce raw materials for the tissue and packaging board industries, is 1.2 million tons. In addition, it will produce bioelectricity and wood-based biochemicals such as tall oil and turpentine. It is estimated that the mill will use about 6.7 million cubic meters of wood raw material per year.

"It was easy and smooth to continue the EIA with Pöyry after the prefeasibility study of the pulp mill. At Pöyry the industrial and environmental knowledge is combined in a way that suits Finnpulp's requirements", says Timo Piilonen, Project Director of Finnpulp.

"The traditional pulp & paper industry is in transition towards a bio-based product business. As the world's leading pulp and paper engineering consultancy, we are proud to support our clients in this transition towards more sustainable solutions. Pöyry is honored to be able to support Finnpulp in the development of this remarkable project", says Nicholas Oksanen, President, Industry Business Group.

The value of the order is not disclosed. The order was recognised within the Industry Business Group order stock in Q2/2015.

Stable and productive was the performance of the Voith supplied Liansheng BM 8 board machine during the first year at Fujian Liansheng Paper Industry Co., Ltd. in Zhangzhou, Fujian province, China. Convinced by the performance of the Liansheng BM 8, the Vice General Manager of Fujian Liansheng Paper Industry, Xue Rongjun, said, “Voith’s vast technological experience, high system efficiency and low operating costs are quite attractive.”

2015 06 25 104530

The remarkably smooth cooperation between Voith and Fujian Liansheng Paper Industry resulted in planned daily production being reached less than two months after start-up. Furthermore, daily production has continued to exceed expectations.

With a 7,300 mm wire width and 1,100 m/min design speed, the Liansheng BM 8 produces White Lined Chipboard in a basis weight range of 200 to 450 g/m² and coated White Top Testliner from 175 to 200 g/m². The yearly production will reach 700,000 tons.

With the advantage of Voith’s DF Coat curtain coating technology, which allows that virgin fibers can be replaced by secondary fibers for the coating layer, the BM 8 can produce board and packaging paper grades from 100% secondary fibers. This will help to achieve Fujian Liansheng Industry’s aims for recycling, resource conservation and sustainable development. At the same time, Voith has improved production properties so that whiteness and optical properties can be optimized as required with a much smoother surface.

Voith also delivered an automation package including the Machine Control System (MCS) and the Quality Control System (QCS). Also included in the scope of supply after start-up were fabrics, services for training, and technological support.

The Fujian Liansheng Paper Industry Co., Ltd. was founded in 2005 and is located in Fujian, China. The paper manufacturer produces 2,000,000 tons of board and different paper grades annually for the Chinese market.

UPM Paper - Your Smart Choice

UPM believes in the future of print and its effective coexistence with digital media. Print does not compete with other media channels, but fits in seamlessly.

Performance papers for competitive print products

upm logoBy introducing UPM Valor, UPM Impresse and UPM ReCat to the market, UPM created new, high quality printing papers specialised on the needs of magazine publishers and advertisers. All performance papers reduce mailing and delivery costs while being more sustainable which increases the competitiveness of our customers. The papers are ideal for publications and print products that demand premium quality.

UPM Valor for example is comparable to reference products regarding quality and its characteristics but up to 15% lighter in basis weight. Thanks to the efficient use of raw materials this innovative paper has lower impact on the environment.

“UPM Valor combines our know-how and high quality materials. We took a great step forward in the advancement of our traditional paper products,” explains Product Portfolio Manager Antti Pokkinen.

Other UPM performance papers also distinguish themselves through the combination of high quality and cost efficiency. Due to using little raw materials as well as the special properties of the papers, the environmental footprint is significantly smaller making UPM one of the leading manufacturers regarding sustainability.

“Our performance papers were developed according to existing demand. Printed publications have to keep up with other media products, thus our customers expect cost-efficient paper deliveries,” says Antti Pokkinen.

Always the perfect match for digital printing

The UPM Digi papers cover the whole range of digital end uses since they are available in a variety of categories that were developed for special requirements and printing technologies. By using UPM Digi papers the advantages of digital printing can be fully exploited. They are available woodfree uncoated (WFU) and woodfree coated (WFC), covering a wide spectrum of basis weights starting from 80 to 350 g/m².

“One of our new UPM Digi papers is UPM Digi Fine jet – a completely new paper quality especially created for high-speed inkjet printing. UPM Digi Fine jet is characterized by a quick absorption and fixation of ink, high surface smoothness and an excellent opacity. It is suitable for advertising materials, inserts, mailings, balance sheets, supplements, reports and other official documents,” states Ansgar Reiners, Product Portfolio Manager.

For dry toner applications UPM offers a diverse selection of coated papers, UPM Finesse for example, which can be used for photo books and other high quality products. The product range for woodfree uncoated and recycling papers was expanded by the products of the Digi Fine series.

UPM delivers numerous converting options for the UPM Digi papers, such as a special cutter which guarantees the highest angular and cutting accuracy in various format sizes.

Sustainability – a basis for business success

Publishers, printing houses and advertisers focus on reliable, safe and sustainable products. This includes printed materials.
