UPM and leading design bible Wallpaper* magazine have collaborated on an innovative project for the magazine's August issue. Hailed as its most ambitious issue to date, the magazine has been produced with no less than eight UPM paper grades with 21,000 subscriber generated digital covers on UPM Digi Finesse.

The Wallpaper* Handmade issue features unique designs for furniture, fitting, foodstuffs, fashion and much more. From cover to cover, Wallpaper* Handmade is a complete celebration of craftsmanship. Through working closely UPM, the issue also includes an A5 sketchbook documenting how several of the designs evolved. There is even a paper house to cut out and assemble, courtesy of architect Ryuji Nakamura.

UPM's Head of Magazine Publisher Sales for the UK, Dino Vasiliou, said: "Being offered a creative opportunity with such a renowned magazine is extremely exciting for UPM. This has allowed us to see the whole process rather than just paper supply – a unique experience."

He added: "We're delighted with the finished magazine. The feedback we've received already from the market is really encouraging. Working on such a creative and sometimes challenging project has been extremely rewarding."

Wallpaper* Editorial Director Richard Cook summed up the experience: "The whole ethos of this issue is about handmade qualities, buying something that's lasting and has real provenance. UPM has sold to the State of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources a conservation easement on 187,876 acres (76,000 hectares) of UPM-owned forest land in Northern Minnesota. UPM will receive USD 44 million (approximately EUR 36 million) for the easement and will record a pre-tax capital gain of USD 42 million (approximately EUR 34 million) in the Company's third quarter result.

Under the conservation easement, UPM retains ownership of the land and its Blandin paper mill in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, will continue to use it as a working forest. The easement provides the public with access for recreational purposes such as hunting, fishing, hiking and snowmobiling in perpetuity. UPM's Blandin will continue to manage the forest under its unique Smart Forestry system which is designed to enhance productivity and support economic and environmental sustainability. The land is certified to comply with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

The easement preserves conservation values which protect the recreational, working forest and natural and scenic resources of the affected land. Blandin can satisfy its obligations under the easement by continuing its certification by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will conduct audits for compliance.

"UPM believes in the multiple uses of our forest resources for economic, ecological and public benefit, and our forestry professionals have always managed the land for these varied uses," said Joe Maher, General Manager of UPM Blandin. "This landmark conservation easement in the US shows vision and cooperation, to the benefit of all groups who care about our forest lands. UPM is pleased to be part of it."

UPM Raflatac has opened two new slitting and distribution terminals, in Istanbul, Turkey and Bangalore, India. The new terminals will supply local labelling markets with high-quality film and paper labelstock.

The Bangalore terminal complements UPM Raflatac’s already substantial Southeast Asian and South Asian logistics network, comprising a labelstock factory in Johor, Malaysia and terminals in Jakarta in Indonesia, Bangkok, Thailand and Mumbai, India.

“India is a promising market for us, having the highest growth percentage for labelstock in the Asia-Pacific region,” says Santosh Kumar, Area Sales Director, South Asia, UPM Raflatac. “Through the new facility, our customers especially in South India will receive their orders faster and have a wider range of products at their disposal.”

The Istanbul terminal answers growing demand for UPM Raflatac label materials in Turkey, and is in line with the company’s strategy of gradually expanding its market share in this rapidly growing region.

“High-quality products, a product range that covers a variety of labelling needs and fast, reliable deliveries are the core of our operation,” says Burak Yildirim, Country Manager for UPM Raflatac in Turkey.

The new terminals are an essential facet in UPM Raflatac’s global development programme. During 2007 to 2010, UPM Raflatac has opened new production facilities in the USA and China, a brand new production and logistics centre in Poland, and a new slitting and distribution terminal in Russia.

(UPM, Joroinen, 9 June 2010 at 10:00) – UPM’s tree nursery in Joroinen, Finland, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The tree nursery will keep an open house for visitors between 29 July and 1 August from 10 am to 4 pm daily.

Founded in 1980, UPM's tree nursery annually produces 14 to 15 million spruce seedlings and forest planting material for the company’s own forests and its customers. UPM's tree nursery produces healthy, high-quality tree seedlings suitable for different areas. All plants are of Finnish origin.

The tree nursery employs 30 people specialised in producing tree seedlings. “Modern plant production technologies combined with skilled staff enable the best possible start for a new forest”, says manager Anne Immonen.

“In a good plant, both the stem and the root are of high quality. A healthy plant, successful handling during transportation and storing as well as good soil preparation are all necessary in order to create a productive forest. A careful planting of the tree seedlings is very important”, Immonen points out.

Two thirds of forest regeneration is done by planting tree seedlings. Tree species is chosen based on the soil type. Trees are planted at specific spots within a certain distance from one another. In addition to manual planting done by forest workers mechanical planting is increasingly used.

UPM has invited schoolchildren and other stakeholders to plant trees as part of the company’s annual tree planting day. UPM’s tree planting day, which was organised for the first time last year, takes place on May 21 in most locations. This year, the company organises tree planting day events in Finland, Russia, UK, USA and Uruguay.

At the events, stakeholders are taken to the forest, where they are guided by UPM’s forestry specialists.

”Tree planting is a concrete way of bringing issues related to forests closer to people. On the tree planting day, we want to emphasize the importance of native tree species, which many species of flora and fauna are dependent on for habitat”, says Timo Lehesvirta, Director, Sustainable Forestry, UPM.

”Tree planting concretely shows how we always have to think of actions related to forestry and forest regeneration in the long term, decades ahead. International environmental questions connected with tree planting include biodiversity, mitigating climate change and soil and flood protection,” Lehesvirta points out.

UPM is committed to carrying out its international biodiversity programme. The goal of UPM’s biodiversity programme is to secure biodiversity as a vital part of sustainable forestry, simultaneously promoting best practices in forestry. The United Nations biodiversity declaration signed by UPM is a natural part of the company’s long-lasting work in developing sustainable forestry practices. This year is the UN’s biodiversity year, and May 22 is UN’s biodiversity day.

UPM has signed a preliminary contract for selling the real estate of its former further processing mill in Parkano, Finland. The premises are to be taken over by a wood processing company to be established by the mill's former local management.

UPM's Timber Business decided in January to centralise its further processing operations to the Aureskoski mill. At the same time the company announced the closure of the Parkano mill locating about 20 kilometres from Aureskoski.

UPM has transferred production from Parkano and Kaukas further processing mills to Aureskoski mill which has become one of the most significant distribution centres in Finland due to the widening product range.

Agreements of relocation to Aureskoski mill have been made with 12 Parkano employees to work in production and engineering duties. Manufacturing in production lines transferred from Parkano will begin in May.

From-job-to-job -programme proceeds in Parkano, Heinola and Lappeenranta

At the same time UPM announced the significant restructuring of the Plywood and Timber business the company started the From-job-to-job programme to alleviate the impacts of the mill closures. The programme includes, in cooperation with authorities and partner companies, active measures to find new jobs and retraining for the employees. UPM has reserved 1.5 million euros to support the participation in retraining and related material and 1 million euros support starting up new enterprises.

Within three months about 310 people from the 650 who were unemployed have found a new job, study place or entered a pension scheme. The new company that will start to operate in the mill premises aims to employ as many as possible of the former UPM employees given notice.

Only two new enterprises have been established within the From-job-to-job programme what is less than expected. UPM is encouraging employees to establish new enterprises by offering start-up support. The support can be applied for until the end of 2011, and the maximum support for an enterprise 20,000 euros. In addition, UPM supports re-employment training of employees who have been given notice.

UPM continues the work to find new business to the former mill premises. There have been over 250 connections to potential companies in the Heinola and Lappenranta regions. Negotiations concerning either renting or selling the mill premises have continued in both places. Any decisions haven't been made yet and negations continue.

UPM's operating profit sales increase by 10%

(UPM, Helsinki, 28 April 2010 at 09:40) – Interim Report for January–March 2010:

• Operating profit excluding special items was EUR 116 million (loss of EUR 78 million)
• Operating cash flow was EUR 209 million (EUR 274 million)
• Positive development in delivery volumes in all businesses – sales grew by 10%

Jussi Pesonen, UPM’s President and CEO, comments on the result of the first quarter of 2010:

"UPM's operating profit improved clearly from the same period last year due to higher delivery volumes across all of our businesses and lower raw material costs. The Uruguayan operations were for the first time reported for a full quarter and contributed positively to the result.

Our first quarter sales increased by 10% from the same period last year. What is especially positive is that despite the clear increase of delivery volumes our fixed costs remained the same. However, our profitability continues to be unsatisfactory and everyday efforts to improve the situation will continue.

In Paper, delivery volumes improved especially in Asia and North America. The Paper business made an operating loss with average paper prices decreasing and fibre costs increasing from the same period last year. However, we succeeded in increasing the prices of fine and speciality papers due to good demand.

The results of Energy and Pulp business areas improved as we were able to take advantage of the good market situation. Also Label business continued the positive development which started last summer.

The Finnish stevedores' strike in March impacted all of our businesses negatively. The estimated direct impact of the strike totals about EUR 20 million affecting the first and second quarters of the year. The strike also had significant indirect impacts and we lost orders.

The volatility of the fibre markets raises concerns. The Finnish wood market was inactive at the beginning of the year. If the situation continues, it will first affect our Timber and Plywood businesses.

The recovery of advertising in print media is slow. Increased investment activity has not yet started to fully impact our businesses. However, paper demand in Europe is forecast to recover from 2009 and our paper deliveries are expected to be higher than last year. A similar development is taking place also in our other businesses.

We seem to have passed the bottom of demand and price cycle in our businesses. Therefore we expect the operating profit for 2010 to improve clearly from last year. However, variable costs are expected to increase by about 2% from last year", says Pesonen.

UPM Kymi pulp mill hit by strike

upmlogoPaper workers at the UPM Kymi paper and pulp mill in Finland started a strike today at 6 am. The reason for the strike is a dispute concerning the amount of lay offs announced at the mill last Friday. The strike has been announced to last until 3 May 2010 but the parties will continue negotiations. Estimated daily production and sales loss for paper is approximately 2,400 tonnes and for pulp approximately 1,600 tonnes.
