How can manufacturers significantly improve product quality and process runnability in paper production and converting? This is exactly the question German manufacturer of specialized testing technology, emtec Electronic, addresses at booth 163 at the MIAC 2021 convention in Lucca, Italy from October 13-15.

Leipzig, Germany, 13.09.2021 – After MIAC 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, technicians of paper mills and converting sites worldwide once again get the opportunity to update their professional knowledge and experience the charm of Tuscany for three days at the MIAC Exhibition in Lucca, Italy. Visitors to the convention can visit emtec Electronic at Booth 163 to discover more about emtec’s devices, all of which are self-developed and unique on the market. The assortment includes the device that launched the company, the PDA Penetration Dynamics Analyzer, which measures liquid penetration to predict the gluing, printing, and coating behavior of paper and board.

One of emtec’s most recent devices, the ACA Ash Content Analyzer, will be on display at the event. The ACA allows for a quick and reliable determination of the composition of fillers and fines within a sample without destroying the sample. This process leads to an immense time-saving compared to traditional combustion methods.

In addition, the CAS touch! and FPA touch! will be on location and available for demonstrations. The latter two are improved and more easily portable versions of the original one-of-a-kind testing technology, the Charge Analyzing System and Fiber Potential Analyzer.

Using standard titration techniques, the CAS touch! technology allows technicians to measure the cationic/anionic and acid/base demands of water-based charge systems, easily determine isoelectric and flocculation points of a sample and examine the correlation between pH, titrant demand and streaming potential. The FPA touch! enables the correct dosage of chemically charged additives by providing accurate information regarding the charge of fibers and fillers in a sample based on proven methods of Zeta Potential measurement.

One emtec device not on display due to its size but with video and informational material readily available is the FPO, the Fiber Potential Analyzer Online, which has the added benefit of being connected directly to the process and is so able to constantly monitor the fiber charge, allowing for immediate changes to be made if necessary.

Measuring device manufacturer emtec Electronic is pleased to announce that its TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer is the subject of a recently released TAPPI Technical Information Paper (TIP). The peer-reviewed technical specification document investigates the specialized measuring instrument for tissue paper that is able to simulate the sensory properties of the human hand when touching tissue paper products.

Can a machine accurately imitate the sensory capabilities of the human hand? Is it possible to objectively and reliably determine complex tactile sensations such as the softness, smoothness, or stiffness of tissue products? What conditions are necessary to determine a product’s hand-feel?

2021 08 06 093150A newly released TIP from industry research organization TAPPI endeavors to answer these questions in connection with emtec Electronic’s TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer device. TAPPI TIPs, or Technical Information Papers, are documents containing specific information, such as data, calculations, or product applications, for use in the manufacture, evaluation and description of pulp, paper, and related products. TAPPI TIP 0808-07, titled “Objective Determination of the Haptic Properties of Tissue Products, Technical Information Paper TIP 0808-07 (2021)” covers the theoretical background of haptics, how the TSA device measures the three basic parameters for determining haptic feel, and discusses application possibilities for the paper manufacturing process and quality assurance. 

TIPs are critically peer-reviewed and contain practical and readily usable information for the pulp, tissue, and paper industries, among others. Because of the organization’s well-known research and testing standards, being featured in a TAPPI technical paper is widely considered an important recognition within the industry and marks a milestone for the 25-year-old German machine developing and manufacturing company.

“Since we came out with the TSA in 2006, it’s been our goal to make it a relevant, cost-saving measuring device known throughout the industry,” says emtec founder Giselher Gruener. “Being recognized and published in a TAPPI technical document is an important step in this direction.” 

The Tissue Softness Analyzer provides accurate and consistent results relating to the haptic parameters that determine the human tactile sensation, such as the sensation of softness, of tissue products. The TAPPI TIP includes a methodical investigation of the device’s measuring principles, an exploration of the algorithms used to arrive at a hand-feel, and the required conditions for measuring the haptic parameters, which determine hand-feel of base tissue and finished products, such as facial tissues, napkins, or toilet paper.

In a presentation on day two of the three-day conference, Gruener explains how to use the TSA device, which is able to measure haptic properties of tissues such as softness, smoothness/structure, stiffness, compressibility and “crumple-ability”. Gruener also illustrates how the unique design of the TSA device imitates the sensory perception of the human hand. The TSA, however, is able to differentiate between three different parameters and arrive at a numeric value for a sample’s hand-feel based on softness, smoothness, and stiffness. In addition, Gruener describes current applications for use in production, including R&D, process and product optimization, quality assurance, troubleshooting, and benchmarking. One example includes a newly developed TSA test method for the evaluation of hand sheets, which was developed by industry research partners at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and featured in a study in the online journal Bioresources

In line with this year's theme "Advances in paper and board production," emtec Electronic is presenting the ACA Ash Content Analyzer, TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer, EST 12 as well as the CAS touch! and the FPA touch! at the 29th International Munich Paper Symposium from 18th to the 20th of March.

The ACA, Ash Content Analyzer from emtec Electronic, measures minerals and fillers in paper and board. With this innovative technology, non-destructive measurements within 30 seconds are possible for the first time. The innovative laboratory device replaces the traditional combustion method with the latest X-ray technology and thus enables measurements of the total mineral filler content as well as the percentage of individual filler components in paper and board. The disadvantages of combustion, such as time-consuming test procedures and dependence on the moisture of the sample, are no longer an issue with the ACA Ash Content Analyzer.

2017 03 30 092245The emtec TSATissue Softness Analyzer is a multi-functional measuring device for the objective assessment of softness, roughness and in-plane stiffness of tissue products and calculates the "Handfeel" value adapted to the respective market and product. These individually measured parameters are used for quality control, help in product and process optimization, and can also be used to develop new products. Participants at the trade show can have samples measured and evaluated directly at the booth using the TSA.

The CAS touch! Charge Analyzing System and the FPA touch! Fiber Potential Analyzer will both be presented at Tissue World Miami, too. The CAS touch! measures trash particles in the pulp, which helps to optimize the use of chemicals, to reduce costs and to improve both, product quality and runnability. 

The FPA touch! (Fiber Potential Analyzer) measures the surface charge of the fiber and helps the paper, tissue and corrugated board manufacturers, but also the chemical supplier, to optimize the use of chemicals. As a result, product quality can be improved and runnability and production output can be optimized.

Emtec test equipment enables a very exact evaluation of the relevant paper and board properties

From February 12th to 14th emtec presents its innovative measuring instruments for the pulp, paper and board industry at the ACOTEPAC conference (booth no. 56). The use of these devices enables a more efficient and reliable process and quality control from the wet end to the finished product and helps to achieve the best possible quality at the lowest possible costs.

The easy handling, light weight and small size makes them an ideal partner. What the FPA touch! achieves with high accuracy in the laboratory, its “big brother”, the Fiber Potential Analyzer online FPO achieves directly in the production process, to which it is directly connected. Up to four fully automatic measurements per hour are possible. The results can be provided online, but can also be transferred to the computer system of the mill. The permanent controll allows an immediate reaction, in case it becomes necessary.

Together with our Colombian partner Alberto Marin, from Elof Hansson, our area manager, Daniel Ohndorf, will attend the conference of the Colombian papermakers once again in 2020.
