An extensive maintenance shutdown is in progress at UPM's Fray Bentos pulp mill. The preparations for the shutdown started already on 13 October 2010. The mill is to be restarted as previously estimated on 10 November 2010. The shutdown was scheduled in mutual understanding with the Uruguayan environmental authority DINAMA.

In addition to normal annual maintenance works the super heaters in the recovery boiler will be replaced. During the maintenance period, 800-1,000 additional workers will be working onsite. This is the most extensive maintenance since the start of the mill on 10 November 2007.

For further information please contact
Mr Matías Martínez, Communication Manager, UPM Uruguay, +598 456 20100

UPM's Fray Bentos Pulp Mill is located on the bank of the River Uruguay 4 kilometres east of the city of Fray Bentos, in Uruguay. The mill's annual production capacity is about 1.1 million tonnes of bleached eucalyptus pulp, which is suitable for manufacturing fine and magazine papers, carton and tissue paper. The mill started its operation in November 2007 and is among the most modern ones in the world. Designed with the latest technologies available, the mill operates in compliance with the strictest standards set by the European Union and Uruguayan legislation.

UPM has started testing the new Finnish FSC standard in company forests. With this testing the company wants to fully assess the costs and functionality of the indicators of the new Finnish FSC standard approved by the Finnish FSC association on 8 October, 2010. The testing covers the financial, ecological and social impacts of the indicators. FSC forest certification will be in the future also one of the forest service products offered by UPM to private forest owners.

Even if FSC is commonly in use in many countries, where forestry has an important role, in Finland there has been no such national standard which would have been widely used by forest owners. Forest industry, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders in Finland have been long in dialogue to find common understanding regarding the national FSC standard. These discussions have been focussed on consolidating financially viable forestry, the environmental aspects and the rights of Sámi people. UPM has participated in these discussions actively as one of the forest industry representatives. All key environmental organisations have participated in this process.

The new national FSC standard to be applied in Finland will become effective only after it has been approved by the Board of Directors of international FSC, probably from the beginning of year 2011.

The results of UPM's own testing are expected to be ready by the end of this year. Based on the results UPM will decide whether it will apply for FSC certification in its own forests in Finland.

UPM has for years offered different nature services to forest owners, who want to emphasise the different values of their forest i.e. promote game stock landscape or nature values. FSC forest certification will be in the future also one of the forest service products offered by UPM to private forest owners.

UPM regards forest certification as an excellent tool to promote sustainable forestry in these circumstances that only 10% of world's forests are certified. UPM seeks to promote all credible forest certification schemes including international PEFC and FSC. All UPM forests are certified. In Finland this comes under PEFC certification and in the UK PEFC and FSC certification (UK Woodland Assurance Standard). In Uruguay UPM plantations are FSC certified. In the UK UPM has experience as the leader of the biggest FSC and PEFC certification group.

The Association of Finnish Foresters and Nordea Bank have awarded the Finnish TV programme "Green Gold" as the Forest Act of the Year. TV channel MTV3, TV production company Intervisio and UPM, who are all involved in the making of the program, received the award today.

"The TV programme "Vihreä Kulta" has familiarized the viewers with subjects related to forests such as forest use and forestry in a versatile and practical manner. This can be seen in the subjects covered as well as in the experts who have appeared in the programme. The programme has in a short time managed to reach both forest owners and others interested in forest-related issues with its factual but entertaining approach," says Tuula Jusko, chairman for the Association of Finnish Foresters.

The purpose of the Forest Act of the Year, initiated by the Association of Finnish Foresters, is to annually award an open-minded and outstanding act which promotes forestry and knowledge on Finnish forests. The award was given for the first time in 1995.

"We highly appreciate this award as it is assessed by professionals", comments Aili Piironen, Director, Communications, Forest and Timber Business Area, UPM.

The fourth season episodes of “Green Gold” now airing take the viewers to forests and outside of forests when presenting the different products originating from forests. The programme also features celebrities, nature-related topics as well as different forest-related professions. The programme has its own Facebook pages and a web page dedicated to the programme, where viewers are encouraged with help of experts’ blogs to discuss topics presented in the programme.

UPM papers part of the winning formula

The WAN-IFRA International Newspaper Color Quality Club membership winners for the years 2010-2012 have been chosen.

According to the global organisation of the world's newspapers and news publishers 109 different titles achieved the membership this time. Out of these the 109 titles 31 were printed on UPM paper. This makes UPM the largest paper supplier in the competition.

Altogether 162 titles were competing for the membership. During the four months evaluation period the successful newspaper titles demonstrated their capacity to produce quality print products in accordance with the demanding ISO standards. Membership requires reliably reproduced colour images and advertisement contents consistently, worldwide, and with the intended colour effect.

According to WAN-IFRA the International Color Quality Club quality initiative helps ensure that the reader receives an attractive, high-quality product and the advertiser an outstanding advertising carrier. Paper plays a significant role in the newspaper quality and is also an important factor influencing the character of the newspaper. UPM encourages interactive communication with its customers and partners in order to enable best quality printed products.

"UPM wants to congratulate all winners, and is especially proud to be the supplier of so many successful titles," says Erik Ohls, Director, Technical Sales at UPM Paper Business Group.

The award ceremony will take place at IFRA Expo 2010 in Hamburg in October. List of the winning titles printed on UPM paper is enclosed.

UPM's Timber business will curtail its production in Finland during the fourth quarter of 2010. Demand for sawn timber has decreased and due to the seasonal changes demand is estimated to further slow down towards the end of the year. Also high wood price in Finland has weakened the business' cost competitiveness in the markets.

The production curtailments in Timber business and possible temporary lay-offs are to be carried out according to mill-specific plans. UPM Timber has curtailed its production also during the first half of 2010, and has closed down a sawmill in Heinola and a further processing mill in Parkano during the early 2010.

For further information please contact:
Mr Arto Halonen, Senior Vice President, UPM Timber, tel. +358 40 823 2877

UPM Timber manufactures green products for sustainable and advanced building applications. Our annual production capacity is 2.3 million cubic metres of sawn timber. UPM Timber's 12 production units are located in Finland, France, Austria and Russia. UPM Timber employs 1,200 people of which 800 in Finland.

UPM Shotton paper mill have struck a long term deal with waste management company, PHS Special Contracts, part of PHS Wastetech, to reprocess all of its rejected material into valuable products.

The paper mill already recycles 650,000 tonnes of recovered paper per year in its newsprint manufacturing process, combusts deinking residues to make energy and reuses the ash from the combustion process.

The last piece in the jigsaw can now be diverted from landfill. Mixed waste materials from UPM Shotton's pulping process will be cleaned and reprocessed to make recycled plastic products such as railway sleepers, furniture and high quality plastic board. Other materials sent to PHS which cannot be processed on their site, such as tin and aluminium will be sent to other reprocessors.

Mr Andrew Bronnert, Head of Energy & Utilities at UPM Shotton, said: "We are delighted to have found an innovative solution through PHS Allclear for this most difficult of waste materials. We are now really heading towards zero waste from the site"

Mr Patrick Wadey, Head of PHS Special Contracts, said "We are proud to be able to offer this solution to UPM. The reject waste stream is the key to achieving zero waste to landfill for the recovered paper sector and we are privileged to be in a position to offer a sustainable alternative to the industry."

Mr David Ingham, General Manager of UPM Shotton added: "This strategic agreement has enabled us to meet our vision as the frontrunner in creating value from renewable and recyclable materials."

In January 2010 UPM Shotton announced the construction of a Materials Recovery Facility on site to separate mixed recyclable materials from kerbside collections to a recovered paper suitable for newsprint manufacture.
