DHL launches new ocean freight links to Africa
DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight specialist within the Deutsche Post DHL group, has established three new ocean freight links to the African continent. Delivery times for Less Than Container Load (LCL) shipments on the three connections between Bremen and Tema (Ghana), Cape Town (South Africa) and Mombasa (Kenya) have dropped from 31 to 25 days, respectively from 33 to 31 days and from 49 to 45 days. This service not only ensures faster transport of goods to Africa up to one week, it also enables CO2-savings of up to 10%.
"Movement of goods between Germany and Africa is on the upswing. We note a growing demand among our customers for transports to these emerging countries. Our LCL services take account of this demand," says Volker Oesau, CEO DHL Global Forwarding Middle Europe.
The world's largest transport network for ocean freight LCL
Companies from the energy, automotive and manufacturing industry in particular benefit in addition to the existing Full Container Load services from the expansion of the LCL network to three important new destinations in Africa. With relatively strong business activities in these countries, there is high demand among companies in these segments for transport solutions for smaller freight shipments.
DHL Global Forwarding is constantly expanding its LCL network, which currently comprises 45,000 international line operations and nearly 2,000,000 cubic meters of consolidated partial loads per year. In the function of a "Non Vessel Operating Common Carrier" (NVOCC) - that is a logistics company operating as an ocean carrier without possessing its own fleet - DHL provides the world's largest transport network for ocean freight LCL with fixed departure and delivery time-tables. As a result, customers are guaranteed full and uninterrupted supply chain management, covering pickup services at source, consolidation and deconsolidation, delivery to the destination, monitoring as well as customs procedures.
SCA acquires hygiene products company in Brazil
SCA is acquiring the Brazilian hygiene products company Pro Descart. Consideration for the deal amounts to SEK 450m on a debt-free basis. The company has annual sales of SEK 360m.
Brazil is the most highly populated country in South America, with 190 million inhabitants and a favourable economic growth. The market for hygiene products has a good growth potential, this applies especially for incontinence care products, having shown double digit growth.
“I am very happy that we are now establishing ourselves in Brazil, which is also of strategic significance,” comments Jan Johansson, President and CEO of SCA. “We have for some time worked on finding the right solution for entering this important emerging market. With this acquisition of Pro Descart, we now have a presence throughout Latin America.”
Pro Descart is a family-owned company focused on incontinence care products, but also sells baby diapers and wet wipes. The company, with approximately 400 employees, has manufacturing in the Sao Paulo area.
“Pro Descart has a number two position in Brazil’s incontinence care market. In view of the fact that SCA is the world leader within incontinence protection with its TENA brand, we have good opportunities to develop our new Brazilian operation,” adds Jan Johansson.
SCA to invest more than SEK 800m in tissue and improved newsprint
SCA will invest SEK 460m in a tissue machine upgrade in the US. A decision has also been made to rebuild a paper machine in Ortviken for the manufacture of improved newsprint, an investment totalling SEK 350m.
To meet demand for premium products in the US market, SCA has decided to invest in an upgrade of an existing tissue machine. The machine today has a capacity of 70,000 annual tons, which will remain unchanged. Production is estimated to commence during late 2012 or early 2013.
A newsprint paper machine in Ortviken, Sundsvall, will be rebuilt to allow production of improved newsprint. The machine’s capacity is currently 245,000 annual tons, which will increase marginally since it is possible to produce higher density paper at the same speed. At the same time, capacity for pulp bleaching and water treatment will increase.
It is estimated that the rebuilt machine in Ortviken will commence operation during the third quarter of 2013.

China Forest Certification Council Joins PEFC
PEFC International has unanimously approved the application of the China Forest Certification Council (CFCC) to join the world's largest forest certification system.
"The Chinese commitment to sustainable forest management and forest certification is to be welcomed," said Ben Gunneberg, PEFC Secretary General. "China is the country with the fastest growing forest area globally, and a dominant player in the global forest products market with a growing domestic timber demand and a competitive export-oriented industry. With the Chinese forest sector embracing forest certification, a major step forward towards mainstreaming sustainable forest management is being made."
China currently has the highest afforestation rate of any country or region in the world, increasing its forest cover from 12% twenty years ago to more than 20% by 2010. With more than 200 million hectares of forest, China is one of the most forested countries globally, and is continuing to implement policy measures to increase the quality and quantity of its forests. The total output of the forest sector is expected to reach 2.26 trillion Chinese Yuan by 2012 and employs close to 60 million people.
"Joining PEFC is an important milestone towards international recognition of the Chinese forest certification system," said Mr Wang Wei, Deputy Director General of the Center of Science and Technology Development, the State Forestry Administration (SFA) of China. "PEFC offers us an important forum to share experiences and knowledge, and may eventually assist us in accessing markets for wood products originating from certified forests."
More than 3.4 million hectares of forests in China are expected to become certified to CFCC in 2011, following an agreement between the Beijing Zhonglin Tianhe Forest Certification Center and the Yichun Forest Authority announced earlier this year.
By joining PEFC, CFCC has fulfilled an important prerequisite for applying for PEFC endorsement, a step that is expected in the near future.
"We have been promoting PEFC certification in China for the past four years through a dedicated Promotions Office, and are looking forward to working closely with CFCC towards international recognition," explained Mr. Gunneberg.

Paper in three shades - choice of selection an advantage in the Arctic Volume Range
Graphic design often requires both finesse and surprise. Small details, such as a paper surface and the shade of the paper, can make a huge difference.
Shade, volume and dimension are cornerstones in the new campaign for the Arctic Volume Range - Explore the Volume, where photographer Vincent Skoglund and set designer Tobias Allansson have played with scale, form and perspective in new and unexpected ways.
The fifth colour
The shade of the paper is an important characteristic to take into consideration in choosing paper. What do you want to achieve? Is it the best possible printing quality, colour reproduction, contrast or good readability and a feeling of exclusivity? In three playful motifs, the paper choice and design of the campaign varies in order to show the different possibilities that are offered with the Arctic Volume Range.
- "Different shades provide different printing results and colour temperatures, which contribute to the last, important finishing touches or the feeling you want to convey," says Annika Andréasson, project manager at Arctic Paper's marketing department.
Ingenious team behind the campaign
Vincent Skoglund is known for his unexpected details within fashion and product photography. Sports products are a speciality. In his photos, the commonplace is mixed with extreme sports – here, a snowboard hangs on a clothesline while the piste is cleared with a vacuum cleaner. Tobias Allansson is often responsible for ingenious concepts, which have been successfully used by Burton and Adidas.
In the new campaign for the Arctic Volume Range, the details are well-known, but the perspectives distorted. The sewing needle is gigantic while the garment is tiny...or?
Swedish cookies on Arctic Volume Ivory
Someone who has recently used Arctic Volume Ivory is Susanne Reali, assistant publisher at the publishing company Max Ström. The book is called Swedish cookies and has become very popular. Recipe books should have a long lifetime since they are often passed down from generation to generation. In addition, it is important that the photographs are inspiring and do the recipes justice.
- "Together with our designer, we put a lot of thought into the paper choice. She wanted to see an uncoated paper to see the feeling it conveyed. I preferred coated paper where the photographs could be shown more distinctly. In the end we agreed on Arctic Volume Ivory, which we felt combined both the feeling and printing characteristics. It has a wonderful paper feeling and also a shade that we liked, a tone that adds a little warmth to the photos," says Susanne Reali.
NewPage Releases 2010 Sustainable Development Report
Report Highlights Include Responsible Forestry and Renewable Energy Initiatives
NewPage Corporation, the leading producer of printing and specialty papers in North America, announced today the release of its 2010 Sustainable Development Report titled Big + Little.
"As a pulp and paper producer, we strive to make sustainable practices -- big and little -- a part of everything we do at NewPage from responsibly managing and sourcing natural resources; to operating cost-effectively utilizing best practices; to producing dependable products that are transported efficiently; to collaborating with our customers to improve and grow our businesses; to giving back to the communities in which we operate," said George F. Martin, president and chief executive officer for NewPage. "The report title, Big + Little, emphasizes that the path to sustainability at NewPage is not just one of big, global programs or small, individual actions day in and day out, but one that encompasses both. Taken together, these ongoing actions and steps shape who we are at NewPage, as we work together for a more sustainable future."
NewPage annually produces a sustainable development report to illustrate to its stakeholders what the company is doing to drive and measure its progress in preserving human, natural and financial resources for the future. The company focuses on five key areas of sustainability:
- Responsible Sourcing of Raw Materials
- Efficient and Sustainable Manufacturing
- Responsible and Safe Products
- Healthy, Safe and Engaged Employees
- Strong, Viable Communities
The 2010 report highlights the following achievements for each of these key areas:
- All wood-based fiber, the largest component of our products, continues to be sourced from responsibly managed forests in North America. Forty-nine percent of the fiber NewPage used came from certified and recycled sources and we continued to support several initiatives to increase the amount of certified forest acreage in our wood procurement regions. Additionally, NewPage continued to work to promote responsible management of forests globally through initiatives such as Project POTICO (Palm Oil, Timber, Carbon Offsets) with the World Resources Institute (WRI) to combat illegal logging and preserve virgin rainforests in Indonesia by diverting new palm oil plantations to degraded lands.
- Fifty-one percent of the energy used in 2010 was produced from biomass fuels; a renewable energy source primarily derived from the company's manufacturing byproducts. NewPage is actively researching and supporting new ways to generate renewable energy through a number of partnership projects such as a biorefinery in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; a wind farm in Mineral County, West Virginia and a biomass cogeneration facility in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia.
- Approximately 70 percent of the ingredients used to manufacture our products come from renewable resources such as wood fiber, recycled fiber and starch. In 2010, products containing recycled fiber accounted for 16 percent of total sales, and chain-of-custody certified fiber accounted for 26 percent of total sales.
- NewPage continued to invest in its employees through safety, training and health and wellness programs. Capital of $68 million was invested in 2010 to make improvements in areas such as safety, equipment reliability and product quality.
- Nearly $1 million was contributed to charitable organizations and nonprofit strategic partnerships in 2010. In addition, employees donated countless hours to volunteer programs in their own communities.
"We are very proud of what we have achieved thus far and continue to challenge ourselves to improve our environment through research, technology and strategic partnerships," added Martin.
