Metso Kappa Q Analyzer to improve fiberline control at Södra Cell's Mörrum mill
Upgrading to Metso Kappa Q technology provides existing users of Metso Kappa Analyzers with both new and faster measurement possibilities.
Södra Cell's Mörrum mill in southern Sweden is currently installing a new Metso Kappa Q analyzer. It will replace one of three analyzers operating on the mill's two fiberlines where Metso's Kappa analyzer technology has been in use since 1994.The new analyzer with 7 sample points in the ECF fiberline will measure pulp lignin content and brightness as well as shive content for improved process optimization and quality control. Start-up of the analyzer on fiberline 2 will be completed during September 2011.
"With 400 delivered, Metso Kappa Analyzers have gained a solid reputation for reliability around the world and this latest repeat order is further proof of our customers' confidence in Metso technology," says Jarmo Koskinen, Business Manager, Metso Pulp Analyzers. "Many of the new features and measurements have been developed with help from mills like Mörrum and it is especially satisfying to see them reaping the rewards of our continuing cooperation."
The Metso Kappa Q utilizes patented sweep technology to measure kappa and brightness with a unique two-point calibration method. The fast and accurate Kappa and brightness measurement provides mill with new possibilities for profitable and sustainable pulp production. The addition of shive analysis has provided a valuable diagnostic tool that helps to produce more uniform pulp and gives the mill precise information of grade differentiation for premium pricing potential.
Mörrum produces 425,000 tonnes per year of hardwood and softwood pulp on two fiberlines. Much of the pulp produced at Södra Cell in Mörrum is exported to paper mills in Europe to manufacture paper which may become magazines, books, tea bags and many other products. The Mörrum mill is also the source of green electricity and district heating used to heat houses in the Karlshamn municipality.

Pallmann achieves global success with wood shredding technologies
Heavy investments in the development of the most modern size reduction and process technologies for the wood processing industry are now paying off with numerous attractive international orders. Customers in Russia, Asia, South America and new European Union countries top the list. Pallmann’s order backlog now stretches into the final quarter of this year.
Pallmann, a family firm that has been operating in Zweibrücken, Germany, for over 100 years, has been consistently strengthening its international presence in the recent past. Now this specialist in size reduction technology is reaping the rewards. Orders have been flooding into its Wood Processing Division, especially from Russia and Asia. The company is now working on several attractive projects and registering a steep growth in sales. The main focus is on complex plants for the production of wood fiber or chips that are used in particle board, medium-density fibreboard (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB) and other wood-based products.
Aside from orders for a variety of individual machines, it is complete projects that are currently driving the steep rise in new orders. In Chile, for example, the Arauco group has ordered two complete timber yard plants with rotary bark strippers and chippers, and including the complete machining technology and grinding robot for its sites in Yangay and Teno. Also being delivered this year will be machining technology and timber yard technology for chipboard production by another customer,Yildiz Entegre in Manisa.
At its site in Mersin, Yildiz Entegre is taking delivery of a 66” refiner, as well as timber yard equipment that includes a drum-type bark stripper and drum chipper. In Mendoza, Argentina, a new particleboard plant operated by Cuyoplacas relies on Pallmann for rotary bark strippers and drum chippers, as well as its entire machining technology.
Another interesting major project for Pallmann is a new MDF plant in Apscheronsk, Russia. This incorporates a large refiner, wood chip washing system and complete timber yard. Delivery of the system is already underway. In the middle of this year, Pallmann also began shipping components of a new MDF line being installed by its Thai customer Rayong.
Back in Europe, Pallmann will deliver the core of a new plant based on two chippers for production of OSB in Radauti, Romania. Another OSB chipping line will be established in Turkey, the first of its type in the country.
Pallmann has taken a giant step ahead of the competition with an order from China: in Baouyuan, it will deliver and put into operation the first-ever OSB plant in Asia. Once again, the customer is relying on innovative machining technology from Zweibrücken.
The Pallmann Group is growing quantitatively and qualitatively in equal measure – not only in the timber industry, but also in its plastics, recycling and processing technology divisions. Regular heavy investments in technology as well as in its international distribution network have led to significant growth in incoming orders and an increase in the average order size. The complexity of the plant and machinery continues to increase. Moreover, the share of international orders is rising sharply, right through to the first-time introduction of new technologies in China and other Asian countries.

Varel successfully puts PM 4 into operation following a major rebuild
For the fourth time in a row, Voith Paper has been entrusted with a very complex project by paper and cardboard mill Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel, Germany. Along with increasing the production capacity and expanding the range of products on the PM 4, the core goals were efficient energy use and environmentally friendly paper production.
The PM 4 was successfully restarted in mid of July after its extensive rebuild. Corrugated media and test liners with a basis weight range of 120 to 220 g/m2 are produced. In the future, up to 50% of its capacity should consist of white test liner. The PM 4 is designed for a net cut working width of 5,100 mm and an annual capacity of 300,000 metric tons.
Due to the raw materials that will now be required, the rebuild included a significant expansion of the stock preparation on three lines for which Voith provided the essential machines. Worth mentioning here is a patented system for the white stock preparation line.
The paper mill received new approach flow systems, the headboxes were renewed, and both fourdriniers were extended. A DuoFormer D hybrid former was installed on the back ply, while the top ply received a DuoShake shaker unit. The dryer was completely renewed and a SpeedSizer film press with contact-free web drying was integrated. In addition, the PM 4 received a soft calender and MasterReel rewinder. A new unwinder for larger full reel spools was installed on the winder.
Furthermore, Voith was responsible for the modernization of the paper machine controls and the OnQ ModuleJet profile control system. The complete contact-free drying as well as roll covers, clothing, and doctor blades were included in the scope.
Varel hopes to achieve significant energy savings after the rebuild. Environmental aspects are of critical importance. Varel wants to manufacture environmentally friendly products as resource-saving as possible. A significant reduction in the CO2 emissions of the entire paper production is the goal.
Together with the PM 5, which was provided by Voith Paper as well and also has a capacity of 300,000 metric tons, Varel can offer the entire range of products processed by the corrugating media industry on a 100% recovered paper basis.

New management for Holmen Paper and Holmen Energi
Holmen is reorganising its management teams in two of the Group's business areas. This will also affect the composition of Group management.
Arne Wallin, head of the Holmen Paper business area, will take up the equivalent role in the Holmen Energi business area. The new head of Holmen Paper will be the business area's current marketing director, Henrik Sjölund.
"Holmen Energi will be focusing on several new areas, including wind power and biofuels. To be successful, we need to strengthen our competence in preparation for the major projects that are in the pipeline. Arne
Wallin has many years of experience of both major investment projects and advanced business negotiations," says Magnus Hall, President and CEO, Holmen.
"With his solid knowledge of the major market challenges faced by the printing paper industry, Henrik Sjölund will be a force to be reckoned with at Holmen Paper. He will also be a welcome addition to Group
management."
Henrik Sjölund will be succeeded as marketing director of Holmen Paper by Nils Ringborg, who is currently responsible for recovered paper purchasing at Holmen Paper and managing director of the part-owned paper recovery company PÅAB.
Brynolf Alexandersson, currently head of Holmen Energi, will be taking on the role of production manager in the same business area.
"Brynolf Alexandersson did an extraordinary job during the first phase of development, but it's now natural for someone else to take the helm," says Magnus Hall.
All changes are applicable as of 15 September.
Avilon Seeks Corporate Restructuring
Avilon Ltd, part of Neo Industrial's Viscose Fibers business has today submitted an application in its local district court for a corporate restructuring. Behind the arrangement is Avilon's currently critical liquidity situation. The restructuring's objective is to secure the company's promising long-term development by ensuring its short-term operating conditions.
Despite facing short term market induced difficulties, Avilon's long-term prospects are promising. Avilon's market situation has changed almost monthly. However, Avilon still has confidence in its long-term outlook. Corporate restructuring is a necessary protective measure against any single creditor's actions endangering the continuation of Avilon's mid-term operations and production.
Avilon's tight liquidity situation is due to the overheating of the viscose fiber market that started last spring and led to an unprecedented, short-term weakening of the fiber market and price. Avilon's Valkeakoski-based factory has been in a temporary shutdown since the end of July, and sales of the existing stock have been less than Avilon hoped.
The United States, main market of Avilon's strategically important product, fire-retardant fiber, suffers from a stagnated construction market. Hence, Avilon's customers' stock levels are currently high. The basic viscose fiber market is, however, already recovering.
- We are now working towards the moment when profitable production can be restarted and we can utilize our achievements thus far: successful startup of the factory, our innovation enabling the use of paper pulp, attaining a good market position on the US fire-retardant fiber market, as well as new product innovations now very close to commercializing, comments Avilon's Managing Director Heikki Hassi.
Avilon's recently launched technology business related negotiations have proceeded well. Possible license sales will have a significant immediate as well as a long-term effect on Avilon's financial situation.
