Since the beginning of the year, the Government of India has been producing for the first time large volumes of paper for its rupee banknotes through the Indian Central Bank. For this purpose, Voith supplied two complete production lines to Mysore – Bank Note Paper Mill India (Pvt.) Ltd., in Southern India. The scope of supply included the water mark wire workshop, cotton, stock and broke preparation and two paper machines as well as the entire finishing unit with two rewinders, three cross-cutters and fully automated packaging lines. The two paper machines have an annual capacity of up to 12,000 metric tons of banknote paper for the local market. To house the production facilities new facility were erected adjacent to the banknote printing works. Among other things the new lines will produce the base paper for the new 500 and 2,000 rupee banknotes.

  • Annual production capacity 12,000 metric tons
  • Production of base paper for all denominations, predominantly the new 500 and 2,000 rupee banknotes
  • Order includes transfer of expertise on producing banknote paper

Thanks to the two machines in Mysore, India can now produce in its own country a substantial part of its requirement for around 28,000 metric tons of banknote paper per year. As the customer in Mysore did not have any previous experience in producing banknote paper, the necessary expertise was transferred by Voith through appropriate training and long-term support on site. This included the preparation of the embossing stamps for the watermark, the necessary chemical formulations, as well as the operation of the entire plant, up to the packaging of the banknote sheets. Today the Bank Note Paper Mill India runs the entire system very successfully and completely independent.

The first banknotes produced on the two production lines included the new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes. The Indian government took a long time to announce the issue of the newly designed banknotes. To curtail corruption and the black economy, all old banknotes with a value of more than 100 rupees were declared invalid virtually overnight in November 2016 and a deadline of the end of December was announced for exchanging the old banknotes. At the same time, banks were instructed to issue a limited amount of the new notes which now had comprehensive security features.

PulPaper is the leading international event in the forest industry’s calendar, and will be held at Messukeskus in Helsinki on 29–31 May 2018. The event acts as a global meeting place where visitors can get a comprehensive overview of the latest forestry technology. The previous event attracted visitors from a total of 70 different countries, and exhibitors from 30 countries are expected at PulPaper 2018.

PulPaplogopvm600pxThe event was last held in 2014. Preparations for the 2018 event are now in full swing with regard to both the programme and sales. New technologies and innovations from start-ups will also be on display at the event.

Three other events will also be held at the same time as PulPaper: Wood, a new event in the field of mechanical wood processing; PacTec Helsinki, a packaging industry event; and the brand-new Bioenergy.

In addition to comprehensive coverage of fields in the forest industry, the event programme as a whole also covers the packaging, energy and chemical industries to offer visitors and participating companies a chance to meet actors from many different industries.

“Together, the events form a vast, synergetic programme in which each field supports the others. There is nothing comparable anywhere else in the world, and this new event programme supports integration within the forestry cluster. PulPaper offers a unique opportunity for uniting different fields in the forest industry,” says Messukeskus Sales Team Manager Marcus Bergström, who is in charge of the events.

“PulPaper has received an enthusiastic reception. Almost all of the leading forest companies and equipment suppliers in the forest and packaging industries are attending, and their commitment has also encouraged other companies to reserve their exhibition spaces well ahead of the event,” says Hanna Koskela, Sales Manager.

What does the future of the industry look like?

The event’s theme – Visit tomorrow today – is clearly focused on the future. The programme includes both paid conferences and free lectures. Topics in PulPaper’s conference programme include the circular economy, 3D printing, the bioeconomy, climate change, digitalisation, and the opportunities afforded by the industrial internet. Practical examples from companies bring a concrete aspect to these visions of the future.

Business Forum – a new seminar package targeted at company management – will be held on the opening day. Its speakers will be forefront opinion leaders from both Finland and abroad, and their topics will range from consumer habits to change management, and from innovation to sustainable development.

The exhibition area’s Future Square stage will run a free programme focusing on the opportunities afforded by the bioeconomy and career outlooks for industry students. The programme will also be supplemented with visits to pioneering companies in the industry, such as the new bioproduct mill in Äänekoski.

“Thanks to numerous new investments, the future looks bright for Finnish advancements in the bioforest industry. A lot of new things have been happening in the industry, and new products have come on the market. Expectations are high for the new event programme. PulPaper will have an extremely interesting and diverse conference programme reflecting the positive developments in the industry,” says Antti Lindqvist, CEO of Puunjalostusinsinöörit ry.

The forest, packaging, energy and chemical industry events PulPaper, Wood, PacTec Helsinki and Bioenergy will be held at Messukeskus in Helsinki on 29–31 May 2018.

Two Sides, the global initiative to promote the sustainability of print and paper, reports a 61% success rate in removing misleading environmental claims made by some of the world’s largest corporations as they seek to replace paper-based communications with lower cost electronic alternatives.

Two Sides research into more than 600 of the world’s leading corporations, including banks, utilities, telecoms and insurance providers, has shown that a total of 460 of those companies have been using misleading and unsubstantiated environmental statements, despite specific advertising legislation to protect consumers in many countries. To date, 278 of those companies have removed such statements as a result of ongoing engagement by Two Sides.

logo twisides“We’re really pleased that Two Sides is having such a significant effect on some of the world’s largest and most influential organizations. But there is no room for complacency, and there is still a great deal of work to do with the remaining companies that continue to mislead their customers,” says Martyn Eustace, Chairman of Two Sides UK.

Internationally, Two Sides teams are continuing to tackle greenwash in their respective countries, and this has yielded positive results.

North America

Phil Riebel, President of Two Sides North America, comments: “Over 88 major corporations, including many of the Fortune 500, have now changed or removed misleading environmental claims about print and paper to comply with country-specific environmental marketing guidelines. Our discussions with Chief Marketing Officers, Chief Sustainability Officers and others, have been very productive and we are pleased with the collaboration of North America’s leading organizations. Thanks to an overall better understanding of the unique sustainable features of paper products, “go green - go paperless” and “save a tree” claims are gradually disappearing from the marketplace.”

Australia & New Zealand

Kellie Northwood, Executive Director, Two Sides Australia and New Zealand, comments, “It is our responsibility as an industry, but also as part of broader environmental education, to challenge misinformation about the impact of communication channels. Greenwashing is a threat to our industry and we work very hard to ensure companies making the wrong claims correct their communications. Of the companies we have contacted in Australia, 73% have altered their anti-print messaging, and the remaining we continue to engage with.”

Brazil

“This year Two Sides Brazil has chosen the fight against greenwashing as a number one priority,” says Fabio Arruda Mortara, Country Manager for Two Sides in Brazil. “Reaching an agreement with the public sector, towards the withdrawal of several instances of misleading content on websites or public declarations, was probably our best achievement in 2017. Brazil has just become the second largest pulp producer in the world, showing the importance for widespread environmental education in such a large country. Everyone in the world has the right to know that print and paper are not hostile to the environment and add immense value to our civilization.”

South Africa

Deon Joubert, Executive Director, Two Sides South Africa, adds: “We continue to engage with corporates and government institutions regarding their environmental messaging to their customers and citizens. There remains a concern that conventional wisdom linking the use of paper to the destruction of forests remains prevalent and unchallenged. Not only are plantation trees grown to be harvested, just like any crop, these plantations provide commercial and surprisingly good environmental benefits to our world.  In addition, in a recent Toluna research project conducted in South Africa, 92% of consumers want to be able to choose how they receive communication from corporations and government.”

Colombia

“During the first year of the campaign, we collaborated with the Government to remove any mention of ‘zero paper’ from their National Development Plan for the next four years,” says Isabel Riveros, Executive Director, Two Sides in Colombia. “However, the challenge continues. We must contact every company that is using greenwash, and make them understand that the process of paper production can be a sustainable one.”

France

“Our research shows clearly that consumer’s perception on the sustainability of print and paper is negatively influenced by marketing of digitalisation,” says Hadrien Cottin, Two Sides France. “We will continue to engage organizations with the facts how paper based communications are a sustainable choice.”

UK

Jonathan Tame, Country Manager, Two Sides UK, adds, “We have an active campaign to research and remove greenwash in the UK, with a very encouraging response. 83% of all companies we have engaged have agreed to remove misleading messages, and in many cases, we have helped organizations amend their marketing communication guidelines.”

Martyn Eustace concludes: “Consumers should not be misled and encouraged to go ‘paperless’ through the use of misleading ‘green’ marketing. The environmental and social benefits of paper are being overlooked by these false and damaging messages. Based on our consumer surveys, the majority of consumers recognize that paper is a renewable and recyclable product that, if responsibly produced and used, can be a sustainable way to communicate – while also providing real benefits of tangibility, authenticity and authority that can be lacking in electronic communications. Forests are a precious and growing resource, and the forest and paper industries are some of their most important guardians.”

About Two Sides
