World Bank Sanctions Board's decision relating to a Pöyry subsidiary
The World Bank Sanctions Board has issued a decision imposing a one (1) year sanction on Pöyry Finland Oy, a subsidiary company of Pöyry PLC. The decision means that Pöyry Finland Oy (including its subsidiary companies) cannot participate in World Bank Group financed projects for a period of one (1) year from 30 September 2015. Neither Pöyry PLC nor any other subsidiary companies of Pöyry PLC are affected by this sanction, and remain eligible to participate in World Bank Group financed projects.
The decision relates to a water sector project in Vietnam in 2008, where Pöyry Finland Oy (as successor to Pöyry Environment Oy) was found to have not complied with the Bank's administrative rules. No unlawful conduct by Pöyry Finland Oy or its employees has been identified in this connection.
"We are pleased that this long-running process with the World Bank is now concluded. The decision by the World Bank Sanctions Board is a consequence of conduct by former employees of Pöyry which occurred almost seven (7) years ago. We take all compliance matters extremely seriously and have brought forward significant improvements since that time. Pöyry remains committed to building an effective world-class compliance programme across our whole business. Project management excellence is at the heart of our strategic evolution", says Pöyry's CEO and President, Alexis Fries.
"Pöyry has invested a great deal in creating a pragmatic and effective compliance programme over the years. We work hard to ensure the understanding and implementation of the programme in all our operations", says Pöyry's Chief Compliance Officer, Andrew Hartley.
Every one of our 6000 people, across our 45 countries receives regular Code of Conduct compliance training covering many real life scenarios and how to handle them. Pöyry strives for the highest standards of ethics and integrity in all of its business activities worldwide.

Stora Enso completes the divestments of its Barcelona mill and Komárom plant
Barcelona mill
Stora Enso has completed the divestment announced on 27 July 2015 of its Barcelona mill, which produces recycled-fibre based consumer board, to the private equity fund Quantum. The transaction is in line with Stora Enso’s strategy to focus its consumer board offering on high quality virgin-fibre products.
The total cash consideration for the divestment of the shares is EUR 10 million, subject to customary closing day adjustments. The transaction has no material income statement impact.
Based on the annual figures for 2014, the divestment reduces Stora Enso’s annual sales by EUR 117 million and simultaneously decreases Stora Enso’s annual board production capacity by approximately 195 000 tonnes from the beginning of the fourth quarter 2015 onwards. The transaction does not have material impact on Stora Enso’s operational EBIT and cash flow going forward, and it will improve the operational EBIT and EBITDA margins slightly. The Barcelona mill employs approximately 220 people and was part of Consumer Board division.
Komárom plant
In addition, Stora Enso has completed the divestment announced on 31 August 2015 of its packaging plant in Komárom, Hungary, which produces offset printed micro-flute packaging, to Van Genechten Packaging International S.A.
The total cash consideration for the divestment of the shares is EUR 13 million, subject to customary closing day adjustments. The transaction has no material income statement impact.
Based on the annual figures for 2014, the divestment reduces Stora Enso’s annual sales by EUR 14 million and simultaneously decreases the annual corrugated packaging converting capacity by approximately 15 million m2 from the beginning of the fourth quarter 2015 onwards. The Komarom plant employs approximately 90 people and was part of Packaging Solutions division.

Berghs students package life-saving aid for UNICEF
BillerudKorsnäs and UNICEF have set students at Berghs School of Communication an exciting creative challenge – to package an emotion that inspires more people to support UNICEF in its charity work around the world.
BillerudKorsnäs and Berghs School of Communication have been working together since 2010 with the purpose of encouraging students’ creativity and generating interest in packaging solutions among the designers, communicators and decision makers of tomorrow. The collaboration started out as an annual contest and has now developed into an integral part of the full-time Graphic Design and Account Management programmes at Berghs.
This year’s edition of the contest, PACKCHALLENGE:15, will take place during September and October. Students at Berghs are now facing an exciting creative challenge – how can you best package an emotion that inspires more people to help UNICEF in its charity work around the world?
UNICEF’s mission is to reinforce children’s rights. Its work is financed entirely through voluntary contributions from private individuals and companies. One way of raising funds is to sell what are known as field products, such as vaccines, water purification tablets, school materials and mosquito nets.
The products are sold online and through shops in connection with specific campaigns. In recognition for their contribution, donors receive a gift card that they can then choose to give away as a Christmas or birthday present. The students’ assignment is to come up with a packaging solution that communicates the benefits of giving, how the money is used and encourages support of UNICEF.
The solution will:
- Be simple to understand and easy to buy.
- Give the sense that it contains something tangible.
- Be suitable for different types of shops.
- Feel good to buy and valuable to receive.
- Be relevant throughout the year.
- Be fibre-based to some extent.
- Be cost-effective to produce and distribute.
Innovation and the use of new technology will be rewarded, provided that it adds value and is relevant.
The students are required to present their solutions on 29 October.
“Berghs School of Communication is one of the best communication schools in the world. This partnership is very important as it provides us with a valuable injection of new ideas while giving students insight into the packaging challenges of tomorrow. Supporting UNICEF’s work feels worthwhile and extremely relevant,” says Jimmy Nyström, Business Development Director, BillerudKorsnäs.
“UNICEF has a long history of working in innovative ways where we use new technologies and materials to increase the effectiveness of our field work and reach out to vulnerable children the world over. Our organisation is completely dependent on voluntary contributions, which is why it is equally important for us to find innovative ways to increase donations. PACKCHALLENGE is a fantastic initiative and we’re really looking forward to the results of the students’ work,” says Andreas Eriksson, Director of Communication, UNICEF Sweden.
Berghs School of Communication was named Cannes Future Lions School of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2015.

UPM Foundation supports long-term development in Uruguay
The UPM Foundation promotes education and entrepreneurship through joint work with social organisations and local representatives in Uruguay. It annually publishes a report presenting its objectives, operations and latest achievements.
“We are seeking to promote the long-term development and growth of these communities in cooperation with local stakeholders in rural areas. Our work is carried out in collaboration with social organisations, public institutions, departmental and national authorities and other social agencies,” says Magdalena Ibanez, Manager of UPM Foundation.
Established in 2006, the foundation’s mission is to bring together local stakeholders, communities and authorities especially in the fields of education and training in the departments where UPM is active.
“In rural Uruguay, some children finish school as early as age 12, which makes it difficult for them to enter professions that require special training. Through the UPM Foundation, we have been able to extend their schooling and thus improve their employment prospects in the future,” says Ibanez.
Thanks to the UPM Foundation’s work, the remote community of Clara, Tacuarembó, saw its first generation of young people complete their secondary education in December 2014. The aim of this public-private educational programme is to provide high-quality post-primary education throughout the region.
The Integrated Programme for Strengthening Rural Schools being implemented in all rural schools in Río Negro completed its second year in 2014. The programme updates traditional approaches to education, promoting more in-depth research and participation among both teachers and pupils.
The construction of a community orchard in the rural school of Queguayar has increased the variety to food with locally produced vegetables. The orchard also serves as an excellent teaching resource, bringing together families and school to work for their town.
“The UPM Foundation sees community development as starting with the advancement of individual and collective capacities, abilities and skills. The actions we carry out always focus on the long-term effect and the well-being of our reference communities,” states Ibanez.
In addition to its numerous projects, the Foundation last year organized open lectures and community workshops with local representatives, presented its operations in a photo exhibition and organised a visit for community leaders at the UPM Fray Bentos mill.
Altogether over 308,000 people have participated in the UPM Foundation programmes in eight departments and more than 90 communities in Uruguay since it was founded.

UPM Forestal Oriental owns 230,000 hectares of land, of which about 60% is planted with eucalyptus. The rest of the land is protected or used for forestry-related infrastructure, such as cattle grazing and other non-plantation operations. All of UPM’s forest plantations are certified to FSC® and PEFCTM standards.
The Fray Bentos pulp mill started operations in 2007 and remains one of the world’s most modern and efficient pulp mills. Its annual production capacity is 1.3 million tonnes of chemical eucalyptus pulp. Besides pulp, the Fray Bentos mill is a significant biomass-based energy producer, its electricity production accounting for 11% of Uruguay’s total energy production. The mill’s wood raw material comes from sustainably managed local plantations.
In Uruguay, UPM has 550 direct employees and the company indirectly employs around 3,400 people. UPM Uruguay’s value chain creates altogether 6,400 jobs and its contribution to Uruguay’s GDP is approximately 1.3%. www.upm.com/uy

Pöyry awarded permitting engineering assignment by Siberwood for greenfield pulp mill in Russia
LLC Siberwood has awarded Pöyry with the 'Proekt', i.e. permitting engineering assignment for the construction of a new modern integrated pulp mill in the Krasnoyarskiy region in Russia. 'Proekt' is an official stage in the approval process of construction projects in Russia. The assignment shall be completed by April 2016.
The pulp mill will produce northern bleached softwood kraft pulp (NBSK), bleached hardwood kraft pulp (BHKP) and dissolving pulps. The overall capacity will be 900 000 t/year. The mill will be self-sufficient in heat and electrical power. Construction shall be completed by 2019. The Siberwood project has been evaluated as a priority project by the Administration of Krasnoyarsk Region. By using Best Available Technology (BAT) that meets International and Russian Environmental Regulations, the project will contribute to improved living standards for local citizens.
"Our purpose is to realize a greenfield pulp mill project which shall become globally significant and indeed the biggest in Russia. For production of about 1 million tons of finished products, the mill will consume around 5 million m3 of low-grade wood currently unutilized in the region. In this respect, the new pulp mill will provide sanitary effect to the region's forest cluster. In the future, the modern complex shall become a platform for development of satellite biotechnological production facilities", says Sergey Malkov, CEO of LLC Siberwood.
"Pöyry is delighted to participate in such a significant project. With our combination of world class expertise and deep local understanding, we are able to support this very interesting project", says Nicholas Oksanen, Pöyry's President, Industry Business Group.
The value of the order is not disclosed. The order was recognised within the Industry Business Group order stock in Q3/2015.
