Tom Bratlie, vice president in charge of corporate communications, has decided to leave Norske Skog. He takes on a similar position with the Norway-based oil and gas company DNO International.

- Tom Bratlie has done a very good job as head of communications and company spokesperson during a challenging period for Norske Skog. I regret his decision to leave but wish him all the best in his new position, says CEO Sven Ombudstvedt.

Bratlie leaves Norske Skog in June. The process to find a new head of communications has begun.

Bratlie joined Norske Skog in 2004 and has been head of corporate communications since 2006.

PEFC Luxembourg and the Slovak Forest Certification Association have revised their forest certification schemes in line with PEFC's requirements of five-yearly revisions of national systems and submitted their application for re-assessment by PEFC.

As part of the process, PEFC seeks comments and feedback from all interested parties to ensure full compliance of the national schemes with PEFC's Sustainability Benchmark during a 60 day global public consultation.

"We require stakeholder engagement throughout the standards development and endorsement processes at both national and international levels", says Ben Gunneberg, PEFC Secretary General. "In-depth involvement of all interested parties ensures that a scheme reflects the best practices and incorporates available knowledge and expertise, and is aligned with their expectations and needs."

PEFC is the only global forest certification scheme that requires and implements regular revisions of all national certification systems, and that subjects all standards to independent evaluations. All comments received during the global public consultation will provide valuable information for the third-party assessor in determining whether the respective national system is in compliance with international requirements.

Please submit your comments directly to the assessor at latest by 31st March 2010.

After installation of a long nip style press in the board machine at Porstendorf, Germany, MultiFlex V3 press felts from Voith Paper were installed for start-up. The decision was thus made to introduce a clothing supplier not previously active in Porstendorf. The concept was customized. In particular, the outstanding service at start-up confirmed to the team in Porstendorf that the right decision had been made in choosing the clothing supplier. Meanwhile the new press has already been running several weeks and in summary it can be said that all technological specifications have been met or surpassed. "Especially noteworthy are the 52% dry content achieved and the width shrinkage which was reduced by more than 10%", observes plant manager Steffen Söll.

The board machine with 2.32 m net width and a speed of 80 m/min produces 40,000 tons of chipboard per year. At the turn of the years 2009/2010, the two previous reversed presses were replaced by a long nip style press for press loads up to 500 kN/m. A straight-through press was positioned at the end of the press section for setting the desired surface characteristics. The goals of the conversion were: improvement of the energy balance, reduction of production disturbances due to vaporization bubbles and improvement of ply bond strength.

The success of MultiFlex V3 is based on Voith Paper's specialty for the challenges in the press section, the well-proven Vector technology. This comprises a tri-axial non-woven base fabric structure that provides elasticity in all three spatial directions for excellent compaction resistance and self-cleaning properties. It also has high active void volume for controlled dewatering and handling large amounts of water. Even pressure distribution leads to more uniform drying whilst the multi-axial structure provides low flow resistance and maintained permeability.

Voith Paper is a division of the Voith Group and the leading partner to and pioneer in the paper industry. Through constant innovations, Voith Paper is optimizing the paper manufacturing process, focusing on developing resource-saving products to reduce the use of energy, water, and fibers.

Voith is setting the standard in the paper, energy, mobility, and service markets. Established on January 1, 1867, Voith currently has 39,000 employees, € 5 billion in sales, and over 280 locations worldwide and is one of the largest family-owned businesses in Europe.

Voith is an official partner in the "Germany - Land of Ideas" initiative.

Caraustar Announces Price Increase

Caraustar Industries, Inc. announced today that it will increase prices by $60 per ton on all uncoated recycled paperboard grades and $45 per ton on coated recycled paperboard grades produced by its mills. The increases are effective with shipments on and after April 5, 2010. Caraustar will also increase prices of tubes and cores and all other uncoated recycled paperboard converted products on the same date. This series of price increase announcements comes shortly following earlier increase announcements.

Greg A. Bartlett, vice president sales and marketing for Caraustar’s Mill Group, stated, “Publication prices for Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) have reached an average of $170 per ton in the middle and eastern United States, up $95 per ton since December publications. Unreliability of supply has forced us to reach out further with higher cost freight lanes and pay significant premiums over publication list prices to secure our recovered fiber needs. Fiber quality has also declined during this period, impacting our yield of our most important raw material.  Prices for all fiber grades have increased significantly.  We understand the impact that this has on our customers; however, we cannot continue to absorb these costs.  We will be vigilant in monitoring this situation and keep our customers informed of changes and challenges in this volatile recovered fiber market.”
