The government of Brazil this week released the final retaliation list on U.S. goods in its dispute over U.S. cotton subsidies, and the final list does not include pulp, paper or wood products.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) authorized Brazil to retaliate against the U.S. for non-compliance with its ruling in a dispute on cotton subsidies.  A preliminary retaliation list issued by Brazil’s government last November included several pulp and paper products with a value of about $120 million, which if included on the final list could have been subject to 100 percent tariffs.

“We support free and fair trade and are especially pleased that pulp and paper products were removed from the final retaliation list by the Brazilian government,” said American Forest & Paper (AF&PA) President and CEO Donna Harman.

The Policy and Standards Committee for the FSC Board of Directors has delivered a positive approval decision for one revised FSC regional forest stewardship standard: "Swedish FSC Standard for Forest Certification".

The Policy and Standards Committee approved the report submitted by the Policy and Standards Unit (PSU). The standard is approved as of 24th February 2010.

The standard will come into effect for all forest management certification in Sweden from 1st June 2010.  The intervening 3 month period is in place for Certification Bodies to adapt their systems to the revised standard.  The Certification Bodies are required to inform all of their clients in Sweden that they will be assessed against the revised standard from 1st June 2010.

Certificate holders and new applicants may opt to be audited against the revised standard from the approval date, but all assessments shall be against the revised standard from 1st June 2010.

This revised standard replaces what was the first national standard to be approved in the FSC system back in 1998.  Bringing the standard into line with current FSC requirements has been a major task for FSC Sweden.  Much criticism has been leveled at the old Swedish standard, which was written prior to the introduction of Principle 9 and the concept of High Conservation Value Forest.

The revised standard is now in compliance with current FSC requirements, and is a major achievement for FSC Sweden.  Indicators for Small and Low Intensity Managed Forest have also been developed and are currently being assessed by the FSC Policy and Standards Unit.

The standard is a public document, available on request from the FSC Working Group in Sweden or the FSC Policy and Standards Unit.

Everybody has an idea that matters

Sappi, the global manufacturer of sustainable paper, has been supporting graphic design for the non-profit community for ten years now. Because everybody has an idea that matters, Sappi has decided to open up its "Ideas That Matter" programme to a wider community of engaged citizens. As of today, not only graphic designers (professionals or students) but public and private non-profit organisations can now submit their print campaign(s) or other projects.

Some issues in today's world demand urgent response. This is why individuals or groups can apply at any time during the year. Sappi's Ideas That Matter judging committee will evaluate the applications all year round and award paper grants on an ad hoc basis. Grants in the form of tree planting can also take place, in an area that has suffered forest fire or to offset carbon emissions for example.

To be eligible, print campaigns, projects or CSR programmes must demonstrate an environmental, sustainable and / or humanitarian impact. This can include: reducing carbon emissions, environmental footprints, improving the quality of life of people or promoting prosperity by developing local economies and encouraging sustainability.

Students have in addition the opportunity to enter a separate annual Ideas That Matter competition, within their school's curriculum. The deadline for students' entries is 1st June 2010 with winners announced mid-July.

Manue Gheysen, European Marketing Initiatives Team Leader at Sappi, said: "Sustainability is everyone's concern today and the enhanced Ideas That Matter programme reflects this change in consciousness. Sappi papers are fully sustainable and serve as the ideal medium for initiatives which advocate people's well-being, the planet and prosperity. We much look forward to extending our support to more new and creative ideas, that matter."

Sectors eligible for entries, which apply to the annual student competition and the ongoing submission by professionals, include: agriculture, animals, energy, environment, forestation, healthcare, people, science, water and education.

For all details about the new format of Sappi's Ideas that Matter and how to enter, applicants can visit: www.sappiideasthatmatter.com or contact their local Sappi representative. To find out more about Sappi: www.sappi.com or Sappi on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Improved threading reliability and safety.

William Kenyon have recently supervised a rebuild to the 5th to 6th section rope transfer and 6th section rope system on PM2 at Hollingsworth & Vose in the UK.

The design was implemented to give improved threading reliability. In addition, from a safety perspective, the design also removes the potential for manual intervention in the area during the tail feeding process. Since the installation, H&V has seen a tremendous improvement at the transfer and due to a couple of further minor modifications to existing transfers while on site, the mill has also seen much improved tail threading all the way through the machine.

The installation was trouble free and completed within the necessary timescale. This was in large part due to the close working relationship William Kenyon have built up over the years with the mill's engineering department.

Commented Ken Horton, H&V Operations Manager: "I approached William Kenyon on the basis that they had previously done other work on this particular paper machine. The designer was very meticulous and ensured the operators were happy with the install before he left our site.

"The rebuild to the 5th and 6th section rope transfer was very complicated with many obstacles to consider. The paper now runs through these two sections without any problems. Manual intervention is unnecessary."
