SCA- Best carbon reporting in Sweden

SCA has received The New Economy Carbon Leadership Award 2010 for best carbon reporting in Sweden. The award is hosted for the first time by British World News Media magazine “The New Economy”.

Award criteria
The New Economy Carbon Leadership Awards 2010 - SCAThe New Economy Carbon Leadership Award recognizes 39 global companies from 20 countries who have reached highest levels of excellence in carbon reduction and carbon reporting. “The winners are those who have gone far beyond their formal requirement for regulatory and voluntary frameworks. They are fully transparent in their disclosures and have shown best practice when interacting with investors and stakeholders”, explains Nelson Black, Project director for the awards.

With regards to the awards criteria, each criteria was scored up to 100 points. SCA overall score was 470 out of 600 which was one of the highest scores in Scandinavia. The award criteria were:

    * Regulatory risks/opportunities
    * Climate change risks/opportunities
    * CO2 targets
    * GHG accounting methods
    * Level of transparency and good governance
    * Developing technologies or services with a large positive environmental impact

Efficient analysis of data
In an article, Patrik Isaksson, Vice President of Environmental Affairs at SCA, gets to explain the reasons behind the award. “The resource management system (RMS) of SCA plays a crucial role in the company’s ability to make continuous reductions of its CO2 emissions.”

The system is designed in-house and deals with the systematic collection, analysis and presentation of many different sustainability data from SCA’s operations worldwide. The system has been in place since the late 1990s and it is verified each year by a third party.
CO2 targets identified

In addition to that, SCA began a group-wide effort to reduce the CO2 emissions as early as 2001 and in 2008 a quantified CO2 target was formulated.

SCA enters into R&D cooperation

SCA has entered into a long-term cooperation agreement with BioGaia with the aim of developing new health-oriented products. The objective is to combine BioGaia’s expertise in the field of probiotic bacteria and applications technologies with SCA’s distribution network and know-how in the area of hygiene products.

“Probiotic bacteria are microorganisms that confer various types of health benefits. SCA is already active in this area and holds a number of interesting patents. By applying BioGaia’s work methods, we hope to transform these concepts into commercially viable products,” says Ingela Torstensson, head of global research for SCA’s hygiene products.

One example of a research area is the potential of probiotic bacteria to prevent urinary tract infections, which is very common among women suffering from incontinence.

The agreement enables the companies to share know-how in related areas, but from completely different perspectives.

SCA is one of the largest companies in personal care products, with the Libresse and TENA brands. As global market leader for incontinence products, Ingela Torstensson believes that it is particularly relevant for SCA to pursue development beyond the current work boundaries:

“The cooperation is a good example of open innovation, which in this case means that we take ideas from our own company and identify an external environment that offers optimal development potential. It is clear that we have complementary expertise and, given our knowledge of innovation programmes, it would not be surprising if we were to achieve results in entirely unexpected areas.”

BioGaia is listed on the small cap segment of the Nasdaq OMX Nordic Stockholm.

SCA – the world's third-largest hygiene company – inaugurated a personal care plant in Russia. The facility is located in Veniov, in the Tula Region south of Moscow. The investment is valued at approximately EUR 85m and is the first of its kind in local production of personal care products in Russia and the CIS region.

The Veniov personal care plant will manufacture Libero baby diapers and TENA incontinence care products to meet the growing market demand for hygiene products in Russia. The new facility complements the Sovetsk tissue plant, which is located in the same region and was inaugurated in February 2010. Tissue products – sold under the brands Tork and Zewa – are also produced in Svetogorsk, close to St Petersburg.

Jan Johansson, SCA President and CEO, says:
“We expect profitable growth for all of SCA’s hygiene-product categories in Russia and the CIS region. The new Veniov plant brings us closer to our customers, significantly reduces transport volumes and enables us to more rapidly satisfy customer needs. Russia is a market with strong brand preferences, which suits us well.”

In total, SCA employs about 1,100 people in Russia, including approximately 200 in Veniov.

The SCA Tissue plant was operating as normal on Friday after a fire began on the facility's roof at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday 15th June 2010.

Flames from two exhaust fans on the roof could be seen upon arrival at the 1 River St. facility, South Glens Falls Chief Pete Corlew said.

Cindy Stilp, a spokeswoman for SCA Tissue, said Friday the fire began when dust build-up around the exhaust fans ignited.

"It was truthfully a minor fire," Stilp said. "These fans operate at close to 1,000 degrees, and coupled with the fact that the exterior temperatures were so high does create the possibility for fire."

The portion of the roof where the exhaust fans are located is monitored by cameras, Stilp said, and as soon as the fire was spotted by security staff, the plant's employees enacted "standard operating procedures" to extinguish the fire.

Stilp said there was no damage to the building or its machines or wiring, as the fire was contained to the dust deposits.

"We do want to thank the fire department for their professionalism and their response," Stilp said.

There were also no injuries reported, Corlew said.

Fire officials said SCA employees originally fought the blaze before it grew out of their control.

Though Corlew said the cause was initially thought to be an electrical malfunction, Stilp said that was not the case. The dust was ignited only by the heat of the exhaust fans combined with the hot summer weather, she said.

More than a dozen firetrucks responded to fight the fire. Fire departments included South Glens Falls, West Glens Falls, Queensbury, South Queensbury, Hudson Falls, Gansevoort and Wilton.

West Glens Falls Chief Kevin Miner said a large number of firefighters were brought in because the hot and humid night meant they could only battle the blaze for 15 minutes at a time.

SCA is purchasing the Copamex baby diaper business in Mexico and Central America. The purchase price is equivalent to approximately USD 50m on a debt-free basis.

Copamex produces well-known baby diaper brands Dry Kids for the Mexican market and Tessy Babies for consumers in Central America. Sales in the acquired business was approximately USD 60m in 2009. Copamex holds a number three position in baby diapers in Mexico.

“The acquisition will strengthen SCA’s presence in Latin America, and creates a base for expansion of baby diapers in Mexico and Central America”, says CEO and President Jan Johansson.

The acquisition will add to SCA’s current portfolio of hygiene products in the region which now includes feminine care, incontinence care, consumer tissue, away from home tissue products and baby diapers.

The transaction is expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2010, after necessary approvals from relevant authorities

torkSCA has launched a new family of workplace wiper dispensers in Europe. The Tork Performance range includes floorstands, centrefeeds and wall-mounted dispensers with two different colour options.

The Tork Performance dispensers have been designed to improve workflow and cut costs by saving maintenance time and reducing waste and overconsumption, SCA says.

All wall-mounted units and centre-feed dispensers have side-opening panels for easy loading. They can be opened either via a push-button or a key, while tight external seals protect the wipers inside from splashes and contamination.

The top-of-the-range W4 wall-mounted dispenser holds up to 300 clean-cut wipers to minimize time spent reloading, and these are presented one at a time to prevent overconsumption. The new W1 floorstand holds a giant wiper roll that can be changed in seconds via the spring-loaded spindle. The floorstand itself can be moved from one location to another on its sturdy wheels.

"Reducing costs in use and controlling consumption are both vitally important in today's workplace, and these are key areas of focus with Tork Performance," says Mark Riley, Product and Brand Manager for SCA's tissue products in Europe.

Tork Performance dispensers are available in a choice of red/smoke housings for production and engineering environments, and white/turquoise to create a hygienic image for hygiene-critical food, health-care and catering environments. They are made from durable ABS plastic and coated steel and all components are recyclable.
