Valmet will supply OptiConcept M containerboard making line with automation solutions and a winder for GS Paperboard & Packaging (GSPP) Sdn., Bhd. in Selangor, Malaysia. With the new production line PM 3, GSPP will produce high-quality testliner and fluting grades as well as strengthen its position in the Malaysian market. The start-up of PM 3 is scheduled for 2021. 

The order is included in Valmet's first quarter of 2019 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The total value of order of this type is typically around EUR 60-70 million.

Technical details about the delivery

Valmet's delivery will include equipment for stock preparation system with broke and approach flow systems. The delivery for the new high-capacity containerboard machine will include an OptiConcept M containerboard machine, which is already the 26th OptiConcept M line sold globally. The delivery consists of a complete machine from headbox to reel followed by an OptiWin Drum two-drum winder with transfer rails. The delivery will also include an OptiAir Hood high humidity hood, OptiAir Recovery heat recovery with other related air and ventilation systems, a surface starch preparation system and supply system for sizer as well as Valmet Paper Machine Clothing package for start-up. The automation delivery includes Valmet DNA Automation System for process and machine controls and Valmet IQ Quality Management Solution.  

The 7,250-mm wide (wire) containerboard machine will produce fluting and testliner grades with a design basis weight range of 70-180 g/m2. The design speed of the machine will be 1,200 m/min and the design daily capacity 1,445 tonnes.

Valmet has extended the cooperation with Endress+Hauser by signing a distributor agreement for wastewater automation. Valmet's target is to strengthen and expand its wastewater business in Norway and help the wastewater industry to improve and optimize its processes.

Valmet announced the acquisition of GL&V, a global provider of technology and services to the pulp and paper industry, by press release on February 26, 2019. Following the acquisition, Valmet revises upwards its net sales guidance for 2019. The new guidance is subject to the completion of the acquisition, which is estimated to take place on April 1, 2019 at the earliest.

Valmet has on February 26, 2019 entered into an agreement to acquire North American-based GL&V, a global provider of technologies and services to the pulp and paper industry. The enterprise value of the acquisition is approximately EUR 113 million on a cash and debt free basis subject to ordinary post-closing adjustments. The acquisition is estimated to be completed at the earliest on April 1, 2019.

The net sales of the acquired operations were approximately EUR 160 million and the EBITA margin was around 11 percent in calendar year 2018. The acquired operations employ about 630 people of whom approximately 65 percent are in North America and the rest mainly in Europe, South America and India.

GL&V's washing, oxygen delignification and bleaching operations with Compact Press®, pumps and mixers technology for chemical pulping as well as the related Product Center in Karlstad Sweden are not included in the transaction scope.

Valmet takes key steps to continue the reshaping of its internal Information Technology (IT) services aimed at shifting focus towards planning, building and deploying new IT-enabled, value-adding capabilities and supporting businesses. The set of actions to be taken include a business transfer agreement signed with Capgemini.

valmet logoUnder the agreement Valmet IT's application development and maintenance services, including application maintenance and support services, application development services and platform management services, will be moved from Valmet and its current partners to Capgemini.

The transfer agreement concerns a total of 38 current Valmet IT employees in Finland, Sweden and Portugal. Today, Valmet IT employs about 150 IT professionals. Employees in scope will be offered to transfer to Capgemini with similar terms. The transfer is targeted to become effective on March 1 and the full transfer project is to be closed by the end of July 2019.

The transfer together with connected organizational changes and other initiatives will enable Valmet IT to clearly shift its focus from running existing IT services towards creating and deploying new IT-enabled services and products. These can, for example, be related to Industrial Internet, product lifecycle management (PLM) and field service capabilities. In addition, the transfer of IT application development and maintenance services will further enhance Valmet's IT services and supplier management.

Valmet will supply a Valmet IQ Quality Control System, a related reporting system and a recently launched Valmet DNA IQ Dashboard to Papelera del Principado, S.A.'s (Paprinsa) cartonboard machine in Spain. The systems will improve machine runnability and the overall quality of the end-product.

The order is included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2018 orders received. Typically, the value of these kinds of automation system deliveries is below EUR one million.

Valmet will supply an automation system update and expansion for Gasum's project at the Metsä Tissue Mänttä mill in Finland. As part of the project, the mill will replace liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with Gasum's low-emission liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the burners of the drying processes on its tissue machines.

The order is included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2018 orders received. The system renewal will be delivered in June 2019.

Valmet's automation system will be used to control the burners of the drying processes and manage a gas terminal that will be connected to Valmet's data collection application. The delivery will standardize and optimize the tissue drying process and quality management.

The delivery also includes DNA software updates and expansions in the process air systems and drying power control systems of the tissue machines.

Gasum will carry out the modifications needed for the fuel switch as well as all equipment installation.

Valmet has received an order for the new magnesium oxide (MgO) no 3 brown stock washing and screening line for the Sappi Saiccor mill in South Africa. The delivery is part of the Vulindlela Project which targets to reduce the Saiccor mill's air emissions and effluents, and to increase its total production from 783,000 ADt/a to 890,000 ADt/a. The capacity of the new MgO no 3 brown stock and screening line will be 720 ADt/d.

The order is included in Valmet's third quarter of 2018 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. An order with this scope of supply is usually valued in the range of EUR 5-10 million. The new line is scheduled to start up in June 2020.

The agreement is a continuation to the long-term successful cooperation of Sappi and Valmet. Valmet has earlier delivered key processes to other Sappi mills in South Africa.

Valmet and Mercer Group have signed an agreement for on-line performance monitoring for nine Valmet TwinRoll wash presses at the Mercer Stendal mill in Germany. The agreement is valid for one year, with the option of being extended. During this period, Valmet and Mercer will co-operate to further develop fleet management with respect to predictive maintenance and reliability.

The order is included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2018 orders received and constitutes an important step in promoting Valmet's Industrial Internet offering for the chemical pulping business.

valmet logoThe on-line system monitors individual functions of the wash presses by performing advanced data analysis, which generates status reports displayed on dashboards. If any of the monitored functions goes outside the operating limits, an event is triggered and recorded, which enables issues to be predicted and corrected rapidly.

"This will allow the Stendal mill to monitor performance, which will hopefully result in more uptime as well as savings on chemicals," says Dr. Gerhard Wulf, Technical Manager at Mercer Stendal.

"The pilot project has been running at the Stendal mill with a core team of experts from both the customers' side and Valmet. The sharing of knowledge and innovative ideas have been the driving forces for implementation.
