dom logoDomtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (TSX: UFS) has announced an investment by Schlumberger in CelluForce, a joint venture between Domtar and FPInnovations that manufactures wood-derived nanocrystalline cellulose (NCCTM). The investment is a collaboration to explore the use of NCC to enhance the productivity of oil and gas wells. Schlumberger is the world's leading supplier of technology, integrated project management and information solutions to the oil and gas industry.

NCC is manufactured using a patented process in the world's first facility of its kind, located at Domtar's pulp mill in Windsor, Quebec. NCC (also referred to as Cellulose Nanocrystals, or CNC) is the primary component that provides structural strength to trees. NCC is a renewable, biodegradable, nontoxic material.

Details of Schlumberger's investment in CelluForce remain confidential.

This investment follows a CDN$4 million grant announced by CelluForce in February 2015 from the government of Canada's sustainable development technology program (Sustainable Development Technology Canada, or SDTC) for similar research and development work.

"Innovation is one of our core values at Domtar, so we are pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with Schlumberger, a recognized technology innovator in hydrocarbon recovery and production," said Patrick Loulou, Domtar's Senior Vice President for Corporate Development and a member of CelluForce's board of directors.

"The Schlumberger investment, coupled with the recent grant from SDTC, creates positive momentum in realizing the benefits of using NCC to improve the efficiency of oil and gas production," said Richard Berry, Chief Technology Officer at CelluForce.

CelluForce, the world leader in the commercial development of NanoCrystalline Cellulose (NCC), also referred to as Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNC), is proud to announce that its Vice President, Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Richard Berry, has been selected as one of Canada’s Clean50 honourees. This award, now in its second year, recognizes the most outstanding leaders in sustainable development and clean capitalism in Canada.

Award recognizes Dr. Berry’s leadership in sustainable development and clean capitalism

Dr. Berry was recognized in the category of Research & Development for his contribution to the development of NCC/CNC, a high-value nanomaterial that can improve the performance of existing products and enable the development of new ones. NCC/CNC can be economically extracted from wood fiber and improves the strength, durability and toughness of products. It can reduce damage caused by wear, abrasion and light, and has antioxidant properties. Abundant, natural, renewable, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable, NCC/CNC is expected to become a major contributor to the green economy in numerous industrial sectors in the coming decades.
‘’It is an honour to receive this recognition for work that has been done by remarkable teams at FPInnovations, Domtar and now CelluForce,” said Dr. Berry. “Being selected by Canada’s Clean50 is a well-deserved honour for Dr. Berry, and we congratulate him on this achievement,” said Jean Moreau, CEO, CelluForce. “Dr. Berry’s initiatives over the past four years have helped to convince industrial and government stakeholders of the huge industrial potential of NCC/CNC, enabling Canada to bring NCC/CNC research from university and industry laboratories into an industrial and commercial reality. This has strengthened Québec and Canada’s position as world leaders in innovation in the forestry industry. We are honored to have Dr. Berry on our team.”
“These exceptional Clean50 honourees have not only succeeded in identifying opportunities for innovation and improvements, they have actually delivered them, in many instances giving their organizations strategic advantages over their competitors, while also delivering a net benefit for the planet,” said Gavin Pitchford, Chief Talent Officer, Delta Management Group, and Founder of Canada’s Clean50 Awards. “Add up the accomplishments of the Clean50—the individuals and organizations they represent—and you see a massive investment in a better way of doing business. All Canadians will reap the benefits.”

Over 500 nominations were received, and the results of the national search will be published in a special supplement by Corporate Knights.

Dr. Richard Berry honoured by award from the Society of Chemical Industry

CelluForce’s , Richard Berry PhD, a leader in the development of NanoCrystalline Cellulose (NCC) is honoured today with the 2012 Doug Purvis Memorial award by the Society of Chemical Industry at the SCI Canada Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Toronto.

Dr. Berry is recognized for his contribution in the industrial development of NanoCrystalline Cellulose, a recyclable, non-toxic and renewable material extracted from trees. ‘’It is an honour to receive this recognition for work that has been done by remarkable teams at FPInnovations, Domtar and now CelluForce’’, says Dr. Berry. While at FP Innovations, he developed significant pulping technology in the elimination of dioxins, high-temperature peroxide bleaching, aldehyde-enhanced bleaching and more recently neutral bleaching.

Dr. Berry’s initiatives in the past four years helped to convince industrial and Government stakeholders of the huge industrial potential of NCC and have allowed Canada to take NCC research in university and industry laboratories to industrial and commercial reality. This has positioned Quebec and Canada as world leaders in the development of this new nanotechnology and emerging industry.

He now has moved to CelluForce – the joint venture of Domtar Inc and FPInnovations, where he is working to ensure the technical and business success of the demonstration plant which has a capacity of 1 tonne per day.

The Purvis Memorial Awards honors Canadians in academia or an industry, based on chemisty, who have significantly strengthened their sector or an institution that industry relies upon. The chemical industry embraces traditional chemical companies focusing on chemical manufacture and distribution, but also industries such as coatings, crop protection, environmental services, food, pharmaceuticals, plastics, synthetic fibres and pulp and paper.

The nanocellulose joint venture of Domtar and FPInnovations will be named CelluForce, the partners announced in early June. Construction of the NCC production facility is underway at Domtar's Windsor, Que., pulp and paper mill, and will be completed in the fourth quarter of this year. The companies expect to be producing NCC in January 2012.

The joint venture, launched last year, will be led by Jean Moreau, a former vice-president finance with Domtar. CelluForce already has about 30 employees, and a headquarters in Montreal.

"The name CelluForce reminds us that one of the main characteristics of the nanocrystalline cellulose is the great strength it provides to the materials to which it is added, but the name also represents the strength of our relationships with our shareholders, our partners and out customers, which is one of the company's core values," explains Moreau.

He notes that the new venture differs from traditional pulp and paper products because the end product will be marketed as a chemical. "The input is pulp, the output is NCC, which is a specialty chemical ingredient."
